Who’s Hiring in Iowa?

• Clipper Windpower -  Iowa is fairly flat, with only some 1,200 feet between it’s highest and lowest points.  It’s also got lots of open fields.  That gives the wind plenty of time to build momentum close to the ground and tt turns out that Iowa is the number two wind producer in the nation.   They also have a government that’s been open to green energy.  That must have promted Clipper Windpower to (from the fashionably green California) to build turbines in Cedar Rapids.  There were a few jobs open here when this was written, and there’s a good chance there will be more added soon.  The Here’s their career page.
• Pella - While not directly a green energy company, the windows and doors they produce have won Pella the Sustained Excellence award as part of the ENERGY STAR® program.  This company has some 10,000 employees, but is based in the rather small town of – you guessed it, Pella, Iowa.  It kind of reminds me of Clearwater Creek, based in northern Idaho, combining the stability of a larger company in a small town.  Check out their career page to see what positions they are hiring for now.
• Principal Financial Group – This Des Moines based financial services company is pretty well known and it’s easy to see why.  They have over 10,000 employees and make billions in revenue every year.  They do a variety of investing and banking services and were started as Banker’s Life way back in 1879.  They’ve rated rather well as one of the best places to work as well.  Here’s their career page.

Who’s Hiring In Indiana?

• Eli Lilly -  This Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical company is the tenth largest in the world and over 130 years old.  They make commonly known drugs such as Cymbalta for depression, Humalog for diabetes and Cialis for, um, you know.  As you probably already know, health care related industries are hiring now and Eli Lilly is no exception with over 50 openings listed in Indiana at the time this was wriltten.   Here’s the career page.
• Batesville Casket – You read that right.  This company is over 100 years old and has over 3,000 employees.  They even made the caskets that James Brown and Michael Jackson are buried in.  If you’ll pardon the pun, this Batesville-based coffin maker is anything but dead. A quick check shows many positions open in Indiana at the time of writing, so check the career page for what’s open now.
• Cummins - I’ve got one word for you: engines.  Cummins makes diesel and natural gas engines, and all the things that go with them, including servicing them.  They have worldwide operations, but are based in Columbus, Indiana.  If you’ve got a mind for motors, check out their career page and see what positions they are hiring for now.
• Conseco – This Carmel-based insurance company has seen a few changes over the years, starting as Security Life of Indiana and then going through chapter 11 back in 2002.  They emerged from that and seem to be doing rather well, as they are hiring for several positions at the time of this writing.  Here’s the career page.

Who’s Hiring in Illinois?

• Harpo — What’s Harpo?  It’s not just what you get when you spell Oprah backwards, it’s the general name for Oprah Winfrey’s many business ventures.  Oprah tapes her show in Chicago, so many of the jobs are available in Illinois, but there are also opportunities in California and New York.  Here’s the job page.
• Allstate - This Northbrook, IL based insurance company has over a dozen lines of insurance.  With over 70,000 employees, they are part of the Fortune 100 and have many opportunities in Illinois and beyond.  There are over 50 positions available in Northbrook alone at the time of this writing.  Here’s the link to the career page.
• Fannie May – There’s no sweeter career than working for a company that makes chocolates.  Fannie May has been satisfying our sweet tooth for over eight decades and is based in Chicago.  To find out how you can get involved, check out their career page and send them a resume.
• Abbott Laboratories – Here’s another big, established company that’s hiring right now.  This Abbott Park, Illinois company has many locations around the world and over 70,000 employees total.  A quick search shows over 100 openings in Illinois alone at the time of this writing.  Abbott has been a pioneer in health care, developing the first HIV screening test, treatments for arthritis and many other diseases.   They have a variety of needs, from researchers to marketers.  Check the career page for more information.
• John Deere – On the opposite side of the state from Chicago is the small town of Moline, which is the home to John Deere, a multi-billion dollar company with over 50,000 employees worldwide.  It was founded way back in 1837 and made steel plows, but now make a wide variety of agricultural equipment and even ATVs.  Check out their career page to see what they are hiring for now.

Who’s Hiring in Idaho?

• Micron — When one thinks of “Idaho chips” the first thing that comes to mind is potato, not silicon.  But Micron has been producing computer memory chips for a while now and needs talented employees to keep things going.  A quick check of their North America jobs page had over 50 openings in Idaho. They are based in Bosie, Idaho.
• Coldwater Creek — This Sandpoint, Idaho clothing marketer has about 300 stores in addition to its online and catalog sales.  They offer a rural location for a company that size, up in northern idaho, just a short way from the Canadian border.  So if you’re looking for quality employment and the great outdoors, this might be for you.  For the career page, go to their home page and click “Careers at Coldwater Creek” for more details.   As of this writing, they have positions open in Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene.
• Idahoan — This Lewisville, Idaho food producer has a variety of (you guessed it) potato products for consumers and food service companies.  To find positions, go to their contact page and send in your resume.  They don’t currently have a careers page to list open positions.
• Idaho Power — As is the case with most states, utilities are a major employer in Idaho.  In this case, you can work for Idaho Power and not worry about burning a lot of coal or deal with nuclear power plants.  That’s because Idaho Power draws it’s current primarily from 17 hydroelectric facilities.  They are based in Boise. Who’s Hiring in Hawaii?

• Bank of Hawaii — Known as the nickname “Bankoh”, this institution started over 100 years ago and has remained stable in spite of the recession, being named the top performing bank among banks with assets of over $3 billion in 2009 by the ABA Banking Journal.  The neat thing is, they not only have positions open in Hawaii, they also are hiring for American Samoa, Guam, Palau, Saipan. • Outrigger Hotels and Resorts — Do you know something about the culture(s) in which you live and work, have a strong sense of place, and are willing to share your knowledge and experiences openly?  Then according Ohana Hotels and Resorts career page, you just might have a future with them.  There’s plenty to do as they have or are building some twelve thousand rooms on forty seven different properties.
  
• Convergence CT — It’s not all about the resorts in Hawaii.  There’s some serious Information Technology and medicine going on as well.  Convergence CT performs all kinds of secure data storage and analysis for the medical and pharmacutical industry.  See their careers page for current openings.
• Hilo Hattie — Normally the tendency is to focus on major, but locally headquartered companies for the “who’s hiring” series. That leads to some very stable, but predicable list of technology, retail and medical/pharmaceutical corporate headquarters. Hilo Hattie is local to Hawaii and was just too much fun to pass up.  This retailer of everything Hawaiian from clothes to novelties, and they are opening up an online store in 2009.  They don’t have a career page, but check out the home page and look around.  You’re likely to find what positions they are hiring for by contacting them directly.

Who’s Hiring in Delaware?

• DuPont — Formally known as E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, this Wilmington, Delaware company is a global giant in the chemical industry, with over thirty billion dollars in revenues in 2008.  A company that big has a variety of positions.  As an example, they are currently looking for a valet and a PhD researcher who specializes in photovoltaics.  Check the careers page to see if there is a match for you.
• PNC Global Investment Servicing – Here’s another company based in Wilmington that handles the transactions and accounting that take place behind the scenes with investments (at least that’s the best description you’re this blog can muster).  It is owned by PNC but maintains it’s own headquarters.  It also looks like they are hiring as of the time of this writing.  See their careers page for details.
• QPS Pharmacutical Service – This Newark, Delaware based company provides bioanalysis, and pharmacutical related services.  Like DuPont, they are hiring PhD-level workers, but also currently have a business development position open.  Check their careers page for more.
• AstraZeneca US – This is the US portion of the Swedish-based pharmaceutical AstraZeneca and is based in Wilmington.  You may have seen their commercials for medicines like Crestor, Nexium or Prilosec on television.  There’s a lot that goes behind the development and production of a new medicine, so there are bound to be jobs across the board there.  Here’s their career page.

• ESPN — Over 30 years ago a small cable station launched in Bristol, Connecticut with a mix of whatever sports they could air – Australian rules football, pro slow pitch softball and pro wrestling.  Now it’s the home of Monday Night Football, and airs a variety of other major sports on multiple channels, produces a print magazine and is part of the vast Disney empire.  ESPN estimates that nearly 100 million people watch or read some form of ESPN branded coverage every week.  All that sports coverage means jobs.  There’s over 30 openings in Bristol alone as of this writing. • The Hartford — The Hartford Financial Services Group is based in (you guessed it) Hartford, Connecticut.  They’ve been around for nearly 200 years and have offices around the world.  The provide a variety of insurance benefits and investment services.  According to my search from their careers page, I found 82 jobs available in Connecticut, with most of them in Hartford.
• Xerox — This Norwalk, Connecticut revolutionized the office by introducing the first “xerographic” photocopier and left carbon paper to fate of the dinosaur.  They were so popular that at one point they had to fight to keep their trade mark on the name Xerox because people kept using it interchangeably with “photocopy” the way people use Google for “internet search” now.  They’ve had to adapt in the internet age, but are still going.  Check their career page to see what jobs they have now.
• Chemtura – Now for a company you might not have heard of.  This Middlebury, Connecticut company produces specialty chemicals for a variety of industries and employs over five thousand people.  The bulk of their openings and the time of this writing are in Connecticut, so check their career page and see what they have to offer.

Who’s Hiring in Colorado?

• Dish Network — You’ve probably heard of this Englewood, Colorado based company, or use it’s satellite TV service in your home.  They have grown tremendously as one of the big competitors to cable TV in the past quarter century and that apparently means plenty of jobs.  They had over 200 positions open in Colorado alone at the time of this writing.  Check their careers page for current positions.
• Great-West — This insurance and retirement company is based in Greenwood Village, Colorado, did about $2 billion in business in 2008 and has about 3,000 employees.  They are currently hiring business analysts, IT help and retirement educators in Colorado.  They’ve also been around for some 100 years, which says something about their stability.  Check their careers page for what positions they are hiring for now.
• Lockheed Martin — Northrup Grumman was covered in our Who’s Hiring in California? segment, so it’s only fair for Lockheed Martin to get a chance here.  Besides that, our search turned up over 200 jobs for this giant space and defense contractor in Colorado alone.  Keep in mind that many of the positions call for a secret clearance from the US government due to the nature of the work, but there are those that don’t and some may offer a path to clearance for the right candidates.  Here’s the career page.
• First Data — As the name implies, if you’ve got data, they can handle it, especially if you’re looking to conduct a secure electronic transaction.  The company is based in Georgia, but has many jobs in Colorado right now that need skilled labor and offer good salaries and benefits.  Check the career page for what’s going on now.

Who’s Hiring in California?

• Google — It’s hard to believe this huge Mountain View company was just a small internet start up just over 10 years ago, trying to take on the well-established Yahoo.  Now it’s the clear leader in internet search, raking in huge amounts of money on those little “sponsored links” that appear alongside it’s regular results and in websites all over the internet.  When they aren’t busy doing that, they are developing a variety of products to expand their empire.  The good news is that their hiring hasn’t slowed down, even in a recession.  As you might expect, they are hiring software developers, but according to their career pages, they are hiring in advertising, finance, legal and more.
• Northrup Grumman – This Los Angeles based company is one of the leading defense contractors in the US and employs over 100,000 people.  They naturally hire people in technology and IT, which is natural as it’s one of the industries hiring now, but they also need all kinds of specialties to keep a company that big going.  Take a look at their careers page to see what they have open now.
• Gap, Inc. — The Gap is a well-known clothing retailer, but did you know that their brand line includes Bananna Republic, Old Navy, Piperline and Athleta?  That gives them a broad reach and the need for quality employees in spite of an economy that’s struggling.  The corporate offices are in San Francisco and they currently have 30 openings at their corporate offices alone, with many more in their retail stores in California and beyond.  Check their careers page for more details.
• Pacific Gas and Electric – Utilities are always big employers and this is even a bigger deal in a large state like California.  PG&E claims to provide power to 1 in 20 homes in the US and serves the northern 2/3rd of the state (see Southern California Edison if SoCal is more your thing).  They hire for a wide variety of positions, so check PG&E’s career page for details.

Who’s Hiring in Arkansas?

• Walmart — As Financial Reflections has outlined states in it’s “Who’s Hiring” series, if could list Walmart for each state as they are one of the biggest (if not the biggest) single employer in almost every state.  But Bentonville is where Walmart calls home.  With it’s corporate offices there, there is a good source of jobs.  A quick check on the corporate site shows some 160 jobs open at the time of this writing in Bentonville alone.  Strangely enough, their corporate search page is only supported in certain browsers, and not Firefox.  It worked fine for me in Internet Explorer 8.
• Tyson Foods — Based in Springdale, While Walmart is the worlds largest retailer, Tyson claims to be the world’s biggest provider of chicken, pork and beef products.  A company that large is bound to have some openings in a variety of fields.  Don’t believe it?  Right now they are looking for a part-time chaplain, which is a first for any company I’ve seen so far. • JB Hunt — You’ve likely seen one of JB Hunts’ trucks on the road.  They are one of the largest trucking companies around and according to Wikipedia have about 16,500 employees.  While they hire plenty of truckers, don’t worry if driving isn’t your thing, because they have their corporate offices in Lowell, Arkansas, so there are a variety of jobs open.  Check the jobs page for more information.
• Baptist Health — With health care reported to be 1/6th of the US economy, you know a health care provider is going to be on the list in just about every state.  That’s good because it’s one of the industries that are hiring right now.  Baptist Health is a big employer in the state.  Check their site for details.

It’s always great to look at individual states and see what they have to offer. Arkansas hasn’t failed to impress with many large employers and a big variety of jobs.
