Microsoft is rolling new features for everyone in OneNote for Windows 10.

There are some great features rolled out by Microsft for fans of their OneNote note taking application, as tweeted by William Devereux on Wednesday.

For the more technically minded among us, the version number is 16.0.10325.20049 and you should get it soon on auto-update if you do not have it already.

There are different feature sets for insider and on-insiders. Non-insiders will see:

You can now pin a “New Page” tile to the Start menu for quicker access.

A new transparent version of OneNote’s Live Tile

Online Video button on the Ribbon’s Insert tab makes it easy to embed videos.

Paste options now let you decide whether to keep source formatting, merge formatting, or just keep the text.

Insiders will see a much longer list of new features:

Option to include source links when you paste. Cut, copy, and paste also now appear on the Ribbon.

Some Insiders may see the simplified Ribbon Microsoft announced last month.

New table options let you hide borders, quickly select a range of cells, and choose whether to include the heading when sorting.

Symbol gallery added to the Ribbon.

Two new eraser sizes are now available from the Draw interface.

Microsoft Translator is now integrated with OneNote, available from the View tab.

To get all the features, install the latest version of OneNote from the Microsoft Store now. If you don’t see the update right away, it’s likely still rolling out and will be available soon.

For all the LogMeIn users out here I spotted some potential Malware via my inbox yesterday and thought I will let you know.

LogMeIn Notification - Malware

I received a notification from LogMeIn (do-not-reply@logmein.com) stating LogMeIn Account Notification – Account locked. Since I do not have a LogMeIn account on this email address I was immediately suspicious and decided to investigate further.

The e-mail address looks authentic but could have been spoofed (Later confirmed by many Anti Virus providers). Next I investigated the clickable links on the e-mail. The text displayed seemed shows a “secure.logmein.com” address, but if you hover the mouse over the link (to reveal the actual link), it is linking to another site. In my case (barbeauvitresdautos.com/Scripts/logmein_unlock_form.zip).

At this point it is immediately clear that this is a malware e-mail and that I should not click the link.

According to MXlab, an e-mail security company, the virus has the following attack pattern.

The malicious URL downloads a ZIP file with the name logmein_unlock_form.zip that contains the 260 kB large file logmein_unlock_form.pif.

The trojan is known as Trojan.Win32.Agent.AMN (A), a variant of Win32/Kryptik.ASTO, Trojan-Spy:W32/Zbot.BBHD, UDS:DangerousObject.Multi.Generic, Trojan.Zbot or Troj/Agent-AANP.

The following process will be created:

umgio.exe

The following Host Name was requested from a host database: 192.5.5.241.

Several Windows registry changes will be executed and the trojan can establish connection with the domein 249a2efd08167c5c.com on port 80.

Here are some easy steps to protect your PC/MAC from being infected by virus like this.

Invest in decent anti-virus/spam scanning software. Speak to an expert if you are not sure which one to get.

When you do not expect an e-mail be suspicious and contact your provider or the sender of the e-mail to check its validity of the source before clicking on any links.

If you are infected, act immediately. The longer you wait the bigger your potential issues might be.

About Delegate Access

Beyond merely sharing Outlook folders, Delegate Access enables you to grant additional permissions, such as allowing a delegate the ability to create e-mail messages or respond to meeting requests on your behalf.

Notes: You and the delegate must use the same version of Outlook.

As the person granting permission, you determine the level of access that the delegate has to your folders. You can grant a delegate permission to read items in your folders or to read, create, change, and delete items. By default, when you add a delegate, the delegate has full access to your Calendar and Tasks folders. The delegate can also respond to meeting requests on your behalf.

Turn on Delegate Access

A delegate automatically receives Send on Behalf permissions. By default, the delegate can read only the meeting requests and responses sent to the manager. The delegate does not have access to read any other messages in your Inbox.

Click the File tab.

Click Account Settings, and then click Delegate Access.

Click Add.

Type the name of the person whom you want to designate as your delegate, or search for and then click the name in the search results list.

Note: The delegate must be a person in your organization’s Exchange Global Address List.

Click Add, and then click OK.

In the Delegate Permissions dialog box, you can accept the default permission settings or select custom access levels for Exchange folders.

If a delegate needs permission to work only with meeting requests and responses, the default permission settings, including Delegate receives copies of meeting-related messages sent to me, are sufficient. You can leave the Inbox permission setting at None. Meeting requests and responses will go directly to the delegate’s Inbox.

Note: By default, the delegate is granted Editor (can read, create, and modify items) permission to your Calendar folder. When the delegate responds to a meeting on your behalf, it is automatically added to your Calendar folder.

To send a message to notify the delegate of the changed permissions, select the Automatically send a message to delegate summarizing these permissions check box.

If you want, select the Delegate can see my private items check box.

Important: This is a global setting that affects all of your Exchange folders, including all Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes, and Journal folders. You cannot allow access to private items in only one folder.

Click OK.

Note: Messages sent with Send on Behalf permissions include both the delegate’s and manager’s names next to From. When a message is sent with Send As permissions, only the manager’s name appears.

Change permissions for your delegate

Click the File tab.

Click Account Settings, and then click Delegate Access.

Click the name of the delegate for whom you want to change permissions, and then click Permissions.

Note: If you want to remove all Delegate Access permissions, do not click Permissions but instead click Remove and skip the remainder of these steps.

Change the permissions for any Outlook folder that the delegate has access to.

To send a message to notify the delegate of the changed permissions, select the Automatically send a message to delegate summarizing these permissions check box.

Note: If you want copies of meeting requests and responses that you receive to be sent to a delegate, make sure the delegate is assigned Editor (can read, create, and modify items) permission to your Calendar folder, and then select the Delegate receives copies of meeting-related messages sent to me check box.

Change delegate access to private items

If you have assigned permissions to a delegate so that he or she can access your Outlook folders, you can hide personal information in appointments, meetings, tasks, and contacts. Open each personal item, and on the Calendar Tools tab, in the Tags group, click Private.

If you want to give a delegate access to see your private items, do the following:

Click the File tab.

Click Account Settings, and then click Delegate Access.

Click the name of the delegate for whom you want to change access to your private appointments, and then click Permissions.

Select the Delegate can see my private items check box.

Important: You should not rely on the Private feature to prevent other people from accessing the details of your appointments, contacts, or tasks. To make sure that other people cannot read the items that you marked as private, do not grant them Reviewer (can read items) permission to your Calendar, Contacts, or Tasks folder.

Microsoft announced this week that they are replacing their long running Hotmail service with Outlook.com. Don’t stress if you have a Hotmail account. It will not disappear. They are changing the service only and will phase out the Hotmail interface in favour of a new (more touch orientated) Outlook.com interface.

What does this mean for all of us using Hotmail accounts today?

You can now log on to the completely new, feature filled new webmail service from Microsoft with your Hotmail account details. You can also have e-mail aliases.

Why create an alias? Some people like to use multiple addresses for different things. For example, you might use one address for a job search and a different one for online shopping. That way, messages sent to those addresses can be kept in a separate folder.

New features we like.

Outlook.com connecting Social Media interface

Although you this was available in the Hotmail (live.com) accounts, the have made it super simple to connect your social networking accounts to your outlook.com account. This imports all your friends\connections into your People (contacts section). This means we don’t have to log into any of these services to find an e-mail address, telephone number. If you are synchronizing the service with your smart-phone it will also push and pull your contacts into the People section and you can have all your contacts in one place. Services supported today include Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Flickr. We are sure they will add more in the coming months.

This is clearly Microsoft’s way of providing a hub where you can view and manage all your social media accounts. We believe they are on the right track here, although many have tried this and failed.

As mentioned above we love the alias feature, which means not having to log into multiple accounts to see e-mails in separate accounts.

It can also sync with your Facebook and Twitter accounts to grab photos, so everything’s always up to date and you don’t have to input it all yourself.

The “Quick Actions” feature, that shows you actions like reply or delete when you hover over a message—and you can customize which actions show up (of course, keyboard shortcuts would still be faster).

The interface

Outlook.com inline email reply

They have stepped up their game (compared to Gmail) by changing the interface to a Metro (Windows 8) look, designed for touch. They have also brought the in-line reply view to replying to e-mails as seen in the Outlook 2013 Preview. This is definitely one of our favourite features. You can very quickly create labels for organising your messages and they have some nifty keyboard shortcuts built in if you want to add some more skills to your muscle memory.

The People (contacts) view is a stunning interface for showing contacts (Hotmail, Twitter, Facebook, Messenger, etc.) and providing you quick links to their profiles on social media. We have seen this in the Windows 8 metro People App and love it.

The Calendar and Skydrive interfaces are still in the old Hotmail “style”, but we expect them to update that soon. to the flatter Metro look.

Conclusion

Outlook.com is now in beta, but this should not deter you from signing up (or signing in with your Hotmail) account and getting your outlook.com address.

Outlook.com People view

We like the direction this is moving in. It’s cleaner, more intuitive and save us time by providing a central hub for communications. We realise that this has been tried before (thinking back to Google Wave, etc.) but only time will tell if consumers will make the effort to change. A change that we believe is worth it.

Have you recently upgraded to Microsoft Office 2007/2010 and struggling to find the commands in the menu’s that you have become used to use over the years. You are not alone.

Here at Finc IT we regularly face the frustration of users regarding the Microsoft Office ribbon interface and how the menu’s have changed.

The bad news is that we will have to get used to this. With Windows 7 and especially Windows 8 (due for release late 2012) desktop apps, the integration of the “dreaded” ribbon is becoming a standard feature for all Microsoft applications.

The good news is, change is never easy, but this one is definitely for the good. After using the system for over 4 years now we have found that it is not only easier, but more efficient to use the ribbon that having to click 3 of 4 times to get to a menu option.

Microsoft also provides extensive help with finding the Office 2003 menu options here. Our favourite is the interactive guides where you can click the menu option in the 2003 version and it shows you where it is in the 2007/2010 version. You can also get a printable list of Microsoft Office 2010 commands and buttons.

If you are rolling out new versions of Microsoft Office for a company or a group of users you can download and install the Office 2010 interactive menu to ribbon guides locally on every PC. These migration guides provided by Microsoft might also be a helpful handout to your users.

If you are still using Microsoft Office 2003 and wish to look into upgrading. Complete our Callback Request form and we will help you map your future with the Microsoft Office packages.

About Finc IT Services Limited

Finc IT Services Limited was founded in 2006 by

While providing a complete IT service solutions for SME’s, Pierre found that the way IT services is viewed as a value adding service was extremely disappointing, despite the high investment level. He found MSP’s (Managed Service Providers) lack of attention to detail was just not good enough and the client always felt out of pocket. From the burning desire to bring all types IT services under one roof and create a coherent IT infrastructure and service, Finc IT was born.

At Finc IT we specialise in implementing and supporting IT systems and hardware in startups and SME’s. We tailor, install and provide support services for a variety of networks, in a number of different environments, to meet our clients every need. We focus on helping managers in growing companies, and understand the dilemmas they face and the speed at which real results are needed. Capability is often restrained by inefficient IT and business systems, placing a great strain on growth companies. In addition, many smaller organisations cannot afford the expertise that large companies have access to.

Our target is not to be ‘good’ at what we do, but to be excellent and always leave our client with a smile on their face.

It seems that I sign up to 101 online services a week. Some useful, some not. There is never a good way to know unless you actually try them out. I remember being invited to opening a Facebook account 10 minutes after receiving an invite. This was useful as I still use the account today, but there are hundreds of services I signed up to and never used since.

Web services lure us in with “Try it out for Free” offers and promises of changing our lives forever. Understandably they do not always make it easy for us to close our accounts and remove our data from their databases. Always ready to put their re-activation sales teams onto us. Finding the delete account option is sometimes cumbersome and we need to delve or into help documentation or email support.

Not any more. AccountKiller is is a service that helps you to quickly kill an online account. Just go yo their home page and type in the service you wish to remove and follow the instructions.

AccountKiller uses a colour coding system to rate each service’s “ease of use”:

On a white-listed site, it should be easy to automatically delete your account. Perhaps with a couple of clicks, using a deletion link.
A black-listed site indicates it’s probably impossible or highly difficult to get rid of your account. In some cases we hand you an email address so you can contact the site anyway. Otherwise, you may visit the site and search for contact information, and ask them for account removal.
Finally, the grey-listed sites are somewhere in between. It may cost your some irritation or effort – but it should be possible to terminate your account. This is the case when you need to send a mail to the site, send a message using a webform or even ring them.
