The Fulbright Commission is delighted to announce a new partnership with the British Schools and Universities Foundation, Inc. (BSUF). The new award will be made to a British recipient of a Fulbright Postgraduate award who demonstrates a commitment to the wider community and who has the potential to make a significant contribution to society. The award is not limited to particular disciplines and can be made for students across the academic spectrum, although students seeking professional degrees – MBA’s, JD’s and MD’s – will not be considered. Preference will be given to a candidate whose chosen academic programme is not readily available in the UK.

There is no separate application process for this award. The Fulbright Commission will submit the names of appropriate candidates for BSUF to consider. The BSUF funds will complement those awarded by the US-UK Fulbright Commission up to the maximum of £20,000.

About BSUF - The British Schools and Universities Foundation, Inc. was founded in 1961 and has been approved as a tax-exempt charitable organization by both the Internal Revenue Service and the State of New York. BSUF makes grants to public, private, sectarian and non-sectarian schools, colleges, universities and other educational, scientific and literary organisations in the British Commonwealth of Nations and has been awarding scholarships since 1967. Offered to outstanding foreign students for PhD study at U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering. Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State, the Science and Technology Awards have been designed to be among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology. Recipients will be chosen following a rigorous, multi-tiered, merit-based selection process consisting of in-country competition and review, field and discipline merit review by top-level U.S. academic leaders, and nomination by a blue ribbon Advisory Panel. Final selection is made by the Presidentially-appointed Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB). Placement of students will be handled by the Institute of
International Education (IIE).

Eligible fields include: aeronautics and astronomics/aeronautical engineering, astronomy/planetary sciences, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer sciences/engineering, energy, engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum), environmental science/engineering, geology/earth and atmospheric sciences, information sciences/engineering, materials science/engineering, mathematics, neuroscience/brain and cognitive sciences, oceanography, and physics.

Offered for MBA study at Harvard Business School. The award covers tuition fees for the first year of study only.
Applicants for this scholarship can apply for admission to Harvard Business School in the November or January admissions round. After interview with the Fulbright Commission, a shortlist of names will be forwarded to BFHBS and a further interview will be required with the Trustees.

The British Friends of Harvard Business School was set up as a registered charity in 1990 with the specific objective of helping British students to attend the MBA programme of the Harvard Business School. Applicants earning less than £40,000 per year will be given preference, but this should not deter others from applying.

This award covers one year of tuition fees only. Loans to cover board and lodging are available from HBS. In certain cases the Fulbright Commission may decide to offer a stipend in addition.

[UK] Fulbright Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) Fellowships

[UK] Fulbright Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) Fellowships

Fulbright NICS Research Fellowships of $25,000 (covering travel, accommodation, general living costs and associated research fees) are granted to senior civil servants in Northern Ireland to pursue research for between three and six months, affiliated with a relevant US institution. Given the relatively short nature of the programme, proposals should focus on research and assessing best practice rather than gaining a qualification. Expenditure must be accounted for through the production of receipts upon return to the UK.

The award may begin at any time between 1 August 2008 and 30 April 2009.

On return to the UK, each fellow will be required to submit a report on their findings to the Fulbright Commission and their Permanent Secretary, and may be asked to give a formal presentation to colleagues within the Northern Ireland Civil Service.

Deadline

The deadline for application for Fulbright NICS Research Fellowship for academic year 2008/09 is Tuesday, 1 April 2008. (The application form can be found at the bottom of this page.)

Selection Criteria

• Fulbright awards are offered to UK citizens (regardless of where they currently reside) only. Non-UK citizens are required to apply through the Commission in their country of citizenship. Dual UK citizens must apply in the country in which they currently reside; if not resident in either country then applications must be made through the Commission in the country in which they have resided the longest period of time.

• Candidates holding, or entitled to hold, American citizenship including those with dual US-UK citizenship are not eligible to apply.

• Open to Northern Ireland Civil Servants of grade 7/A or above.

• Letters of invitation from US institution(s) should be included with the application where possible.

• Applications must be endorsed by candidates' Permanent Secretary.

• Two references must accompany the application to be considered complete. One should come from within the Civil Service, and the other from outside the Civil Service.

PLEASE NOTE: The Fulbright Commission is unable to comment or provide any feedback on individual applications or the reason for their refusal.

Restrictions

• Accommodation on campus may be sought with the assistance of the Fulbright Commission and its partner organisations in the US, but is not guaranteed.

• Three years must elapse from the date of return from the US before an applicant may be considered eligible for another Fulbright grant.

Visas

Successful applicants will be issued with a J-1 visa with the assistance of the Fulbright Commission. This is the only type of visa that Fulbright scholars may use to enter the United States of America. The present rules governing the J-1 visa impose certain restrictions upon recipients of a United States government grant under an exchange visitor programme. Fulbright scholarships are a part of this programme. Candidates should note that on completion of their study programme, they will be required to return to their home country for a cumulative total of two years to be eligible to apply for an immigrant or temporary worker's visa or for permanent residence in the United States. Tourist travel to the United States is not affected by this rule.

The Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Affairs (BCIS) of the United States grants separate visas for spouses, children and co-habiting partners of J-1 exchange visitors. For information please visit the US Embassy website.

Applicants that choose to take family members along to the United States during the term of the Fellowship understand that their maintenance will not be the responsibility of the Fulbright Commission.

Fulbright NICS Fellowships are given for a maximum of 6 months.

Selection Procedure

A committee of experts in this field will review all applications submitted by the closing date. The committee reserves to itself the right to determine the validity of all applications and not give reasons for its conclusions.

The offer of a Fulbright Award is conditional upon the formal approval of the J William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) in Washington DC. This approval can take several weeks to obtain.

[Australia] AutoCRC Research Scholarship Safe and Reliable Integration and Deployment Architectures for Automotive Software Systems

Research topic:
In modern automotive systems, the use of sensor networks, ECUs (Electronic Control Units) and software components presents opportunities for building innovative, cost-effective and flexible design solutions. However, the introduction of such software-controlled systems in the safety-critical areas of a car design must be carefully considered. The integration of software components and its implications, i.e. interaction, interoperation and sharing of resources, raise serious safety concerns, which include the possibility of common cause failure and unpredicted dependent failure of critical functions caused by malfunction of noncritical functions.

Further difficulties are caused by the increasing scale and complexity of automotive systems, which may contain up to one hundred sensors and
ECUs as well as hundreds of software components. Within this general research area, the proposed postgraduate research project aims to
identify and develop safe and reliable software integration and deployment architectures, where these architectures map software components/functionalities to available ECUs and govern/coordinate their interaction and interoperation.

Supervisors of the project are Prof Jun Han, Dr Lars Grunske, and Dr Antony Tang.

We are interested in a PhD student who has a very string academic record with background in one or more of the following areas:

* component-based software engineering (in the areas of embedded systems, robotics, etc. )
* software architectures and architecture evaluation
* multi-objective optimisation in software engineering
* formal methods in system design
* software and systems engineering for safety and mission-critical systems
* Communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are also required.

The scholarship carries a value of AUS$28,000 p.a., with fee exemption for both Australian and international students. Additional project
support is also available for the student to carry out the research.

China-Canada Scholars' Exchange Programme (2008-2009)

Under the auspices of China-Canada Scholars' Exchange Program with China Scholarship Council acting as the executing agency, and in partnership with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), a number of awards are offered to Canadian academics and students who wish to study and/or do research in subject areas related to China.

Applications for the 2008/2009 awards are now being accepted. All materials must be received by the Education Office of the Chinese Embassy in Canada before March 20, 2008.

Criteria for Eligibility

Applicants should be faculty members at Canadian Universities or students who have a bachelor's degree or are enrolled in a graduate program.

Criteria for Selection

Academic merit of the candidate and the proposed research plan will be the foremost considerations in the choice of recipients.

Preference will be given to those candidates whose research is related to the study of China, however applicants may also undertake studies in any of the fields approved by a Chinese university.

Applicants should have a certain level of Chinese language proficiency in both speaking and writing. However, French or English speaking candidates may be selected as long as their Chinese host universities are willing to accept them.

Duration of the Award

The award will be for a period of no less than 4 months and no more than 12 months from the date of arrival in China.

The Chinese school year starts in September, and ends in early July, with a winter vacation of about weeks in January or February.

It is understood that the recipients of the awards will return to Canada upon completion of their program.

Value of the Award

The scholarship consists of: (1) basic living allowance; (2) payment of tuition fees; (3) on-campus accommodation; (4) medical insurance; and (5) teaching and research material.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada will cover only the cost of return transportation for the award recipient(s) via the most cost-effective route between their previously decided upon point of origin and the final destination in the People's Republic of China, as determined by DFAIT. DFAIT will accept responsibility only for travel arrangements made by its agents, and any cost of travel beyond that will be the personal responsibility of the Canadian award recipient(s).
Accommodation and measl will be provided by the Chinese Ministry of Education for any stopovers at Beijing/Shanghai.

Application Procedure

Applicants should submit five (5) copies of each of the following:

1. a completed application form (obtained from the Education Office of the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa or downloaded from its website Click to download ); For the "Preferences of Institutions of Higher Learning in China," choose only the Chinese universities which can accept international students on Chinese Government Scholarships http://www.csc.edu.cn/en/readarticle/readarticle.asp?articleid=580;
2. a detailed study or research proposal indicating objectives, duration of the proposed stay, methodologies, etc.;
3. two letters of reference from university professors or other academic personnel;
4. academic transcripts (college level and above);
5. a copy of the degree (If the degree is temporarily not awarded at the time of application, a letter verifying the graduation time by the dean (or supervisor) of the department is required.).

In the field of fine arts (painting, graphic arts, sculpture and photography), applicants must submit six pieces of original work, presented in coloured pictures or recorded in a CD, clearly identified.

In the field of music, applicants must provide a standard cassette tape or CD no longer than thirty minutes in duration. It should include clearly identified samples of different musical styles performed or conducted by the applicant him/herself.

Selection

The Chinese Embassy in Canada will officially notify all Canadian applicants no later than August 1, 2008. Admission notice by a Chinese university along with other materials relating to visa and travel to China will also be sent to successful candidates.

Scholarship recipients must enrol at their host universities for the periods approved by the China Scholarship Council. Requests for deferred registration are accepted. Awards holders are not allowed to extend their awards in China.

Reports

The scholarship recipient shall submit a report to the Chinese Embassy in Canada concerning his/her research or language learning in China within two months upon the completion of scholarship coverage. The host university is also expected to evaluate the recipient's performance on campus.

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) is a bilateral program within the Australian Scholarships initiative.

Australian Development Scholarships are a highly-valued form of development cooperation that aims to contribute to the long term development needs of Australia's partner countries to promote growth and stability.

They provide opportunities for people from developing countries to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study in Australia.

Fields of study are targeted to address agreed priority human resource and development needs of recipient countries, in line with Australia's bilateral aid program.

Australian Development Scholarships equips scholars with the skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country through obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian higher education institutions and technical colleges.

Scholarship holders are required to return to their country of citizenship for two years after they have completed their studies to contribute to the development of their country.

Up to 1000 Australian Development Scholarships are awarded each year across 31 countries with scholarships awarded equally between men and women.

Categories of Australian Development Scholarships

There are two categories of Australian Development Scholarships:

Public sector: Applicants are public sector employees who are nominated by their governments for an Australian Development Scholarships award through a competitive selection process. Applicants are required to return to their role in the public service at the completion of their award in order to strengthen public service capacity in their home country.

Open/equity: Applicants do not need to be nominated by their government or employer. Anyone who meets the selection criteria may apply under this category. Applicants are required to return to their country of citizenship after the completion of their award to contribute to the development of the identified priority sector in their country.

Scholarship benefits

Australian Development Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian education institution, including any preparatory training. The following benefits generally apply:

Return air travel - Payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route. A reunion airfare may also be available to eligible students.
Contribution to initial visa expenses
Establishment allowance - A once only payment of A$5,000 as a contribution towards expenses such as rental bonds, text books, study materials, additional medical insurance, home contents insurance, excess baggage upon return home etc.
Full tuition fees
Contribution to living expenses - a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by AusAID. For all students who have received an Offer to start in Semester 1, 2007 the stipend is A$19,616 per annum (or $751.10 per fortnight).
Introductory Academic Program (IAP) - A compulsory 4-6 week program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on life and study in Australia. See information on IAPs below.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only) - provided to cover the student's basic medical costs.
Pre-course English fees - if deemed necessary may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training.
Supplementary Academic Support (Tutorial Assistance) - May be available when essential to improving the student's performance to ensure their academic success
Fieldwork (for research students only) - May be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

Eligibility

Applicants for Australian Development Scholarships must satisfy both the general eligibility criteria and specific criteria established for each country . Applicants will also need to satisfy all requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

General eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

be a citizen of an ADS participating country [see below]
not hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status (unless you are applying as a citizen of the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau)
not married to/or a defacto of, or engaged to, a person who holds or is eligible to hold an Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status
not hold or have held an Australian government funded scholarship in the preceding 12 months at the time of application

Since its inception in 1942, the Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) has been committed to helping Air Force members and their families realize their academic goals. In recent years, the Society's emphasis has been on direct funding of new initiatives that provide greater value to Air Force families.

The centerpiece of the Society's education initiatives is the General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program which provides $2000 grants to selected sons and daughters of active duty, Title 10 AGR/Reserve, Title 32 AGR performing full-time active duty, retired, retired reserve and deceased Air Force members; spouses (stateside) of active duty members and Title 10 AGR/Reservists; and surviving spouses of deceased personnel for their undergraduate studies. The value and success of this program, is demonstrated in the 81,787 grants disbursed since the first awards were made for the 1988-1989 academic year.

This grant program remains competitive in its need-based selection criteria, uniquely tailored to recognize the proper weighing of family income and education cost factors, and is administered by ACT Recognition Program Services. The future of our economy and quality of life depend upon the preparation of a diverse cadre of leaders who can help build a stronger society. These potential leaders, especially those drawn from groups that have traditionally and historically been denied access to higher education, require the necessary support and opportunities to earn and complete a college education.

The Gates Millennium Scholars

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding, low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives*, Asian Pacific Islander American**, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline they choose. Continuing Gates Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence by providing thousands of outstanding students, who have significant financial need, the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The Gates Millenium Scholars scholarship was funded by a historic grant of more than 1 billion dollars to the United Negro College Fund, still the largest single gift to any scholarship organization. One of the most unique aspects of the GMS program is the partnership and collective efforts of the four partner organizations providing services to the Gates Scholars. Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation, living expenses and annual flights to and from London.
Eligibility: You must be a citizen of the Gambia and hold an offer for the full-time BSc Honours Biomedical Sciences.
Criteria: Academic excellence, development potential and financial need. You must make a case as to how the skills and knowledge acquired on the course will be helpful to the development of the Gambia. You must also commit to return to the Gambia on completion of the course.

Information: The Illinois Saint Andrew Society is pleased to sponsor this scholarship program which honors the late R. Harper Brown: Society governor, 1996 Clansman of the Year, co-chair of the Kith & Kin Campaign and former chairman of the development committee.

Value: The purpose of the Scholarship Fund is to assist in defraying the cost of an American (US) college student’s study at a university in Scotland.

Eligibility: Will be:

* at least a graduating senior in high school with an acceptance and intention to attend university in Scotland or a student in an accredited American (US) college or university looking for a study abroad experience

* an ISAS member, or the child or grandchild of a member

GUIDELINES

A. The Foundation will award scholarships to full time students at the 15 pre-selected four-year California colleges or universities who have
- demonstrated an interest in public service
- outstanding leadership potential
- developed and can demonstrate effective communication skills
- the desire to 'make a difference' in local, regional, international or national communities.
- one year remaining until graduation
- a GPA in the upper 1/3 of his or her class

B. The Strauss Foundation will award at least 14 $10,000 scholarships each year, which will be used to pay for some of the costs of the public service project as well as for tuition, fees, books, room and board. Recipients are eligible for one year of scholarship support to be used in their Senior year.

C. The Foundation invites the President or Chancellor or their designee of each eligible 4 year California institution to nominate 3 students* -- 14 or more scholarship recipients will be chosen each year with special preference from each of the following institutions:

* The Board of Trustees specifically requests that each university or college submit a total of three nominations. If an institution submits fewer than three nominations the Foundation maintains the right to omit an award to that institution.

A CAREER IN PUBLIC SERVICE

The Foundation defines public service as work, whether paid or as a volunteer, in government at any level; in organizations serving the public interest; in national, international, regional or local health organizations; and in service-oriented non-profit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help disadvantaged persons or protect the environment.

Fields of study which can lead to public service include (but are not limited to) the sciences, both biological and physical, engineering, technology, agriculture, environmental management, economics, political science, and the other social sciences, English, history, and the other liberal arts and humanities, public health, public administration, government and education.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

A. Maintain satisfactory academic performance (upper 1/3 of his/her class).

B. Carry out their public service project; project funds will be available by June 1, and projects should be "completed" by the following April 15. (That is, the proposed project should be carried out by April 15 so it can be presented and discussed later that month at the all-day Spring meeting. Because we prize projects that are sustainable indefinitely, a project shouldn't actually be completed by April 15, but merely marking its first year then.)

C. Send a bimonthly update to the Foundation, on the status of their project. Updates will be due September 15, November 1, January 15, and March 1.

D. Attend a meeting* for all Strauss Scholarship recipients in the spring of the senior year to make a presentation about the project: how it went, what was learned, etc. (Expenses for travel will be paid by the Foundation and will include airfare, where appropriate, and/or mileage reimbursement.) * This mandatory all-day meeting is a crucial component of the scholarship process.

E. Submit a written assessment of the project by email to the Foundation two days prior to the Mandatory Spring Meeting in April. This summary should be limited to 2 pages typed and double spaced.

F. Disbursement of the final $2,000 of the $10,000 award will be made upon completion of all five of the above listed responsibilities.

G. In addition to the above it is strongly recommended that all scholars plan to attend one of the Foundation's Regional Meetings that will be held in November.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The Foundation may withhold or terminate a scholarship due to unsatisfactory academic performance. Scholars may request postponement of their awards because of ill health or other mitigating circumstances.
