“If the drinks ain’t free I’m not coming!” should be tattooed across my forehead. So many vernissages and openings in this city — I guess at some point you just have to go by certain criteria. There are good exhibitions and bad, but usually I don’t see a lot of the works because the crowds are in my way. So at least I’ll try to be upfront about it: I’m not here to look at art. I’m here to pretend to look at art so I can sip on my free Mate-X and have an excuse to hang around and meet my friends. We usually end up people watching on the sidewalks and from there on, make our way through the weekend.

With all that said, I was thoroughly impressed by the exhibition at the Kunsthaus Bethanien last night. Berlin.Status 2, the name of the collective exhibition, has plenty of great works to offer. Despite the crowds and my super ignorant art-approach, I was genuinely taken by our fellow contemporary Berliner artists. The concept of the exhibition is quite unique and really bundles the perspective of a whole generation. From the official texts:

It has been a little over a year since the first Berlin.Status [1] — a period in which a lot happens in Berlin. Berlin.Status [1] focused on artists living in Berlin who were born from 1973–1980. The second volume Berlin.Status [2] now follows, featuring artists born from 1978–1984.

Berlin.Status [2] is dedicated to tomorrow: presenting works by more than 50 artists it permits a look ahead to the potentials of the youngest generation of artists, although they made quite clear even during preparations for the exhibition that there would be no big bang after which everything would be different. Nonetheless, there is a broad spectrum of interventionist thinking and image-manipulating approaches, including video art, painting, non-figurative objects and a leaning towards low-budget materials that is so typical of Berlin: all this draws a firm line under the myth that Berlin would have no chance without high profile art fairs. Changes don’t come about where games are played with image-building bricks for the creative industries, but in those places where meaningful questions are raised.

This is a really warmhearted recommendation to anyone who has a bit of time on their hands and doesn’t care for crowds, music and drinks (free or not): really go and see the exhibition. It’ll run til the 16th of June.

Anish Kapoor is one of the most important of the world’s contemporary artists. Since his first sculptures – simple forms with paint pigments spread out on the floor – Kapoor has developed a multi-faceted oeuvre using various materials, such as stone, steel, glass, wax, PVC skins and high-tech material. In his objects, sculptures and installations the boundaries between painting and sculpture become blurred. For his first major exhibition in Berlin he will use the whole of the ground floor of the Martin-Gropius-Bau, including the magnificent atrium. Some of the works will have been specially designed for this venue. The show, comprising about 70 works, will provide a survey of the abstract poetic work of this winner of the Turner Prize from 1982 to the present.
