It was on Vintage, the New York-only wine store in SoHo, where I was working at the time, and it included a photo and a short mention of me. That was my first entry into the wine profession — conducting tastings from behind the counter at the retailer — and it led me to my familiarity with wines from the North and South Forks.
The cast iron chicken is undoubtedly the signature dish at Vinegar Hill House. This succulent half-chicken is served in a sizzling hot cast iron skillet. Cooked with butter, shallots and sherry vinegar in a wood-fired oven — the secret to its deliciousness — the white and dark meat are juicy, the skin thin and crisp, and the sauce so flavorful that you’ll want to drink it. While the menu changes seasonally, the cast iron chicken is a mainstay. And for good reason, it embodies the philosophy, ambiance and cuisine of Vinegar Hill House: wholesome, warm and comforting.

Under each piece of nigirizushi in this Japanese birthday card, there’s a message that pertains to the type of sushi (shrimp is ebi, squid is ika, etc.). Even the soy sauce dish has a hidden message, though it got cut off from this photo. Just adorable! And oh-so-Japanese! Thank you so much, Nakayama-san! I am very touched.

Each year, I receive fewer and fewer cards, as we become more and more immersed in the digital age. But every year around this time, I can count on my friend, Nakayama-san, to send me some super cute and funny birthday card from Japan. I just received this sushi birthday card the other day. It totally puts a smile on my face, not only because I love sushi, but the hidden messages are an even greater treat! (See next image!)

No, the chef is not eyeing that last piece of chocolate Guinness cake, but he’s looking at me taking this picture. I’ve made that cake myself many times from the New York Times recipe but it’s never tasted as good as Vinegar Hill House’s. (Email me if you want the recipe!) You can also see their famous wood-burning oven in the background that is to commend for so many of their deliciously comforting dishes.
