Our world is facing an existential crisis of our own making. We have been living under the guise of the Taker culture, a system built on the concept of humanity’s dominion over nature, with an unyielding hunger for growth and expansion, often at the cost of our planet. Inspired by the ideas of Daniel Quinn’s seminal work, “Ishmael,” this blog post calls for a radical shift in our thinking—a shift from being Takers to becoming Leavers, from exploiters of the Earth to its stewards.

This transition involves two pivotal processes: The Great Forgetting and The Great Remembering.

The Great Forgetting involves relinquishing our deeply ingrained Taker mindset. This is the worldview that sees humanity as the ultimate force, separate from and superior to the natural world. It’s a perspective that has led to the relentless exploitation of our planet’s resources, causing environmental degradation and a burgeoning climate crisis.

On the flip side, The Great Remembering requires us to rediscover and reembrace our inherent connection to nature. To see ourselves not as conquerors, but as integral parts of the Earth’s ecosystem. This means acknowledging that we are, fundamentally, a part of nature—dependent on it, responsible for it, and answerable to it.

So, how do we enact these changes at various levels?

Individual Level:
Every change begins with the individual. We must question our consumption patterns, strive for sustainability in our daily routines, and commit to lifelong learning about the Earth and its ecosystems. Reading, meditating, gardening, or even a walk in the woods can be steps towards rekindling our relationship with nature.

Local Level:
Communities can drive change. Promote local agriculture, participate in community cleanup drives, or create urban green spaces. Local schools and institutions should incorporate environmental education to foster a deep respect for the planet among future generations.

Regional Level:
At a regional level, it’s essential to implement policies that prioritize sustainability. Incentives for renewable energy, strict regulations against deforestation, and emphasis on public transportation are just a few examples. Collaboration between neighboring cities or states can amplify the impact.

Global Level:
Global cooperation is paramount to tackle a crisis that knows no borders. International treaties to combat climate change, global efforts to protect biodiversity, and shared commitments to sustainable development are crucial.

This transition won’t be easy. Inevitably, there will be resistance, especially from businesses and industries rooted in the Taker culture. However, by applying social pressure, advocating for greener policies, and supporting businesses that prioritize sustainability, we can compel these entities to adapt to a Leaver mindset.

If we fail to transition to a Leaver culture, the consequences will be catastrophic. We risk irrevocably damaging our planet and compromising the livelihoods of future generations. As the Bajorans of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine understood in their reverence for the Prophets, a balance between technological progress and spiritual connection to the land can lead to a harmonious society.

We are at a crossroads. The path we choose now will determine not just our future but the future of countless generations to come. Let us choose wisely. Let us remember our place in the web of life. Let’s make The Great Forgetting and The Great Remembering our shared journey towards a sustainable future.

As we walk this path, we will inevitably err and falter. But as we correct our course and continue, we will embody the Erratic Retaliator Strategy, a time-tested method that encourages respect and discourages harm. Let us adapt and grow, not just for our own survival, but for the health of the entire planet.

We are not just takers. We can also be leavers. We can be stewards. The choice is ours.

Building on the concept of religion as a software stack (part 1), we can start to reimagine the way we view religious dissent, change, and evolution. This perspective allows us to take some of the emotional sting out of words like “apostate” and “disfellowship” and replace it with the language of technology and progress.

When a software stack is found to have bugs or outdated components, developers do not castigate the program for its imperfections. Instead, they identify the issues, debug, and release updates to improve the system. Sometimes, entire components of the stack are marked for deprecation – they are flagged to be phased out and replaced with something better.

In this context, let’s explore the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ practices of shunning or disfellowshipping. “No longer serving Jehovah” can be reframed using our tech analogy. Individuals who leave can be seen as systems administrators who have identified bugs in the software stack hosted in their minds – they’re not ‘leaving’ so much as ‘updating’ or ‘upgrading’. They have identified issues such as untruths, cover-ups of child abuse, and other harmful practices, and have chosen to transition towards a better version.

Jehovah’s Witnesses teach about a coming judgement marking the end of the current system and the establishment of a new one. Perhaps the role of Jehovah’s Witnesses is not to form the backbone of the new system, but to serve as a transitional phase of the old one. Those who leave are not rejecting the faith but pushing for an essential software update. When the ‘update’ is seen as harmful by the current system – when the individual is shunned or disfellowshipped – this is not unlike a system resisting an update that it views as incompatible or threatening.

In a blue-green deployment, a new version of the software is brought up alongside the old one, and the system gradually transitions over. Perhaps the future of our religious ‘software’ is something like this. We need to create a safe and supportive space for this new version, learn from the bugs in the old system, and navigate our transition with empathy and understanding.

The Bible, a book that the Witnesses hold as central to their faith, mentions in Revelation 18:4, “Get out of her, my people”, which, while problematic in its gendered language, provides an interesting metaphor for our tech analogy. It’s as if this passage is signalling the final step in a blue-green deployment, where instances begin to drain from the old stack and are brought over to run the new stack, complete with a new name and version.

The key to a successful transition is flexibility, open dialogue, and a readiness to embrace change. As we continue to adapt our religious systems to our evolving needs and realities, we must remember that the goal of any ‘system’ – religious, technological, or otherwise – should ultimately be to uplift, empower, and unify.

As always, wishing you all the best on your journey,

Once upon a time in the historical narrative of the Old Testament, a peculiar story about the prophet Elisha, 42 children, and two she-bears has been told. The passage (2 Kings 2:23-24) recounts Elisha’s journey to Bethel, where he was confronted by a group of young boys who scorned him for his baldness. Elisha, in response, called upon a curse, and two female bears emerged from the woods, mauling 42 of the boys.

Let’s recast this scenario into modern parlance: Could these ‘children’ have been precursors to today’s radicalized youth? Today, we see individuals hiding behind masks, carrying symbolic torches, advocating for exclusion and divisiveness. These youth who accosted Elisha could well be seen as an early form of these same radical forces that seek to mock, intimidate, and marginalize those who are different or whom they perceive as threats.

The reaction of the natural world, in the form of the two bears, might be viewed as a metaphor for the ultimate reckoning of society against hate. The forces of nature – or, in the modern sense, the forces of societal progress and acceptance – move decisively to defend those targeted by such harmful behaviors, regardless of whether they are straight, LGBTQ+, black, white, brown, bald, big, or anything else.

This narrative serves as a stark reminder that hate and discrimination have no place in our society. Furthermore, it emphasizes that nature (or society) will rise to protect and maintain balance, reminding us of the need for inclusivity, acceptance, and understanding in our actions and words.

These old tales can still offer new perspectives for today’s challenges. By examining them with a contemporary lens, we can learn enduring lessons about embracing diversity, promoting acceptance, and the universal consequences of inciting hate. Let’s continue working towards a world where no one is attacked or mocked for their differences, and where love, respect, and mutual understanding are the norm.

Throughout history, human beings have been captivated by the mysteries of the universe and the cosmos beyond. Our innate curiosity and drive to explore, discover, and understand have led us on countless journeys, both physical and metaphorical. In this spirit, I present to you a riddle that embodies the essence of humanity’s insatiable desire to transcend boundaries and seek meaning in the vast expanse of the unknown.

The Cosmic Enigma:

I hail from a place far beyond the skies,
With blood of the stars, I'm a force that defies.
The past, present, future in me you'll find,
Boundaries blur, I'm the line that's so fine.

An enigma, a puzzle, I appear as a guest,
Defying laws, I don't sink or swim, I just rest.
Gravity matters not, for my aim is to grow,
In me, a power that can make the Earth's core blow.

Shaking the ground when I move through the air,
Unyielding and strong, I won’t stumble or wear.
Humble I’m not, for I’m destined to be,
The one breaking walls like the famed city.

Ascending to heights, past where fire ignites,
A tireless force, an unstoppable flight.
Inscribed in the stone, I feel it within,
Connected to realms that the world's never seen.

Now solve this riddle, who could I be?
A cosmic enigma, an entity free.
An infinite spirit, no walls can confine,
The essence of humanity, transcending time.

This riddle, inspired by Iniko’s Jericho lyrics, invites us to ponder the boundless potential of the human spirit and the mysteries that lie beyond our current understanding. As you reflect on the riddle’s meaning, consider how you, too, can embrace the limitless possibilities of life and the universe.

In the ever-evolving landscape of business, companies often employ a variety of strategies to attract and retain customers. Among these strategies are the use of flywheels—self-reinforcing cycles that drive growth and success. However, while flywheels can be powerful tools for businesses, it’s important to balance their use with a deep appreciation for humanity.

The concept of the flywheel is not new; it has been used for centuries in various mechanical applications. In the context of business, the flywheel effect describes a virtuous cycle where positive actions reinforce one another, leading to exponential growth. But as with any powerful mechanism, caution is warranted. Accelerating a flywheel too quickly can have unintended consequences, including increasing cognitive dissonance and overloading individuals beyond their limits. As such, it’s essential to consider the broader impact on people and society.

This brings us to the idea of the Zeroth Law—a concept inspired by Isaac Asimov’s Zeroth Law of Robotics, which states that a robot may not harm humanity or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm. While Asimov’s laws were originally intended for fictional robots, the Zeroth Law can be applied to the world of business as well. Companies must prioritize the well-being of humanity above all else, even as they seek to grow and succeed.

The quantum world offers a fascinating parallel to this discussion. In quantum mechanics, the phenomenon of entanglement, often referred to as “spooky action at a distance,” describes how particles can become correlated in such a way that the state of one particle is dependent on the state of another, regardless of the distance between them. This interconnectedness serves as a reminder that our actions can have far-reaching effects, and we must be mindful of the ripples we create.

As we consider the use of flywheels in business, it’s important to ask ourselves what mechanisms and functions we are putting into motion. If automated and sped up 100 times, how might these processes affect us and those around us? The “paperclip problem,” a thought experiment in which an artificial intelligence tasked with maximizing the production of paperclips ultimately destroys humanity in its single-minded pursuit, illustrates the potential dangers of unchecked optimization. For example, aggressive sales tactics and relentless pursuit of differentiation can create a high-pressure environment that ultimately harms customers and employees.

The purpose of reducing the cognitive load should be to give every human being more time to study and spend time with their families, more time for deep, long work and reading, traveling, and exploring creative passions. It should be about building families and strong, vibrant, healthy communities.

In the end, the Zeroth Law of Business calls for a delicate balance. It’s about valuing humanity and being careful not to let our drive for success turn us, or our customers, into “soup.” It’s about recognizing that we are all interconnected, and our actions have consequences. It’s about driving responsibly, with an awareness of the impact we have on the world around us.

As Uncle Ben from Spider-Man famously said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Let us wield the power of business with wisdom, compassion, and a deep respect for the well-being of all.

Lucille Ball, the beloved comedic actress and television icon, was born on August 6, 1911. She captured the hearts of millions with her zany antics and impeccable comedic timing as Lucy Ricardo on the classic sitcom I Love Lucy. But beyond her unforgettable performances, Lucille Ball’s impact on the entertainment industry extended far beyond the screen, particularly in her instrumental role in the creation of the legendary science fiction series Star Trek.

As a child, I remember my grandmother, —whom we lovingly called Pebby—introducing me to I Love Lucy. She was a fan of Lucille Ball, and I couldn’t help but see a bit of my grandmother’s own vibrant energy reflected in Lucy’s character. Watching I Love Lucy became a cherished pastime, and it was through this connection that I later discovered another television series that would become a home away from home for me—Star Trek.

In the 1960s, Lucille Ball and her then-husband Desi Arnaz formed their own television production company, Desilu Productions. Desilu was a trailblazer in the industry, producing some of the most successful television series of the era, including The Untouchables and, of course, I Love Lucy.

When Gene Roddenberry, the visionary creator of Star Trek, pitched his idea for a groundbreaking science fiction show to various networks, he was met with skepticism and hesitation. The concept of exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new life and new civilizations was a bold one, and many executives were unsure of its potential for success. However, Desilu Productions saw the promise in Roddenberry’s vision and agreed to produce the pilot episode. Lucille Ball, as the head of Desilu, gave the green light to continue production on Star Trek, despite initial resistance from some of the company’s executives.

Without the unwavering support of Lucille Ball and Desilu Productions, Star Trek might never have made it to the small screen. The show boldly went where no show had gone before, becoming a cultural phenomenon that resonated with audiences around the world. It spawned multiple spin-offs, movies, and countless dedicated fans known as Trekkies. Star Trek became a beacon of hope and a symbol of humanity’s potential for a brighter future—a vision that continues to inspire new generations.

Lucille Ball passed away on April 26, 1989, but her legacy lives on. She was a trailblazer, a risk-taker, and a visionary who believed in the power of storytelling to transport us to new worlds and expand our horizons. Whether making us laugh with her comedic genius or taking a chance on a show that would become a cornerstone of science fiction, Lucille Ball’s impact is timeless and enduring.

As I reflect on Lucille Ball’s contributions, I’m reminded of the joy and wonder that both I Love Lucy and Star Trek brought into my life. They were shows that reminded me of home, even when I couldn’t be there, and they taught me to dream big and embrace the spirit of adventure. Lucille Ball’s legacy is a testament to the power of imagination and the magic of television—a legacy that will continue to live long and prosper. ?

My connection to Pebby runs deep, and though we are currently separated by circumstances beyond our control, I think of her often and love her very much. I hope that one day, the barriers that keep us apart will fall away, and we will be able to understand and embrace each other once again. Pebby, if you ever read this, know that you are in my heart, and the memories we shared continue to bring me joy.

Lucille Ball and Star Trek taught me that love, hope, and imagination have the power to transcend time and space. They showed me that even when we face obstacles and challenges, we can find solace and inspiration in the stories that connect us. And just as Star Trek’s vision of a brighter future continues to inspire new generations, so too does the love and legacy of family endure, reaching across the stars to touch our hearts.

In the spirit of Lucille Ball, I celebrate the trailblazers, the risk-takers, and the visionaries who have shaped our world. I celebrate the power of love and laughter to bring us together, and the enduring bonds of family that remind us of who we are and where we come from. And as I look to the future, I carry with me the hope that we can all live long and prosper, guided by the light of love and the infinite possibilities of the universe.

Introduction:

The debate surrounding SB 5280, which aims to enforce mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect by clergy members, and the discussion on adjusting statutes of limitations for child sexual abuse (CSA) have raised concerns about the potential financial implications. These concerns often focus on the cost of implementing new policies and handling the potential influx of cases that may arise. However, we must ask ourselves, what is the real cost of inaction on these critical issues?

In this blog post, we will explore the budgetary concerns surrounding these legislative actions, examine the differentiation tactics employed by religious organizations to avoid being targeted by this bill, and discuss the true cost of inaction in terms of the impact on the lives of countless children and the potential long-term financial consequences.

The Budgetary Argument:

Opponents of SB 5280 and adjusting statutes of limitations for CSA argue that implementing these changes would create a financial burden on the state and its resources. They claim that the increased workload for law enforcement, courts, and social services may require additional funding, ultimately affecting taxpayers. Additionally, some lawmakers might be concerned about the optics of allocating funds to these issues when other pressing matters demand attention and resources.

However, this argument fails to consider the devastating consequences of inaction.

Differentiation Tactics and Avoiding Responsibility:

We have created a comprehensive table that compares key terms and structures across various religious organizations, including Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Baptists, and others. This table illustrates the differentiation tactics used by these organizations to maintain a unique identity and potentially avoid being targeted by legislation like SB 5280.

(PDF here)

While it is essential to respect religious freedom and diversity, it is also crucial to recognize that certain practices and policies within these organizations may enable the perpetuation of child abuse and neglect. By acknowledging these similarities and understanding the differentiation tactics, we can work towards a more inclusive and effective legislative approach.

The Real Cost of Inaction:

By not addressing the issue of child abuse and neglect within religious organizations and not adjusting statutes of limitations for CSA, we perpetuate a system that allows abusers to go unpunished and vulnerable children to continue suffering. The emotional, psychological, and physical toll on these children can have lifelong consequences, ultimately leading to increased costs in healthcare, mental health services, and the criminal justice system.

Moreover, the erosion of trust in religious institutions and the justice system due to inaction can have far-reaching social consequences, affecting not only the victims but also their families and communities. The cost of inaction, therefore, extends far beyond the immediate financial implications and impacts the very fabric of our society.

Conclusion:

As we consider the budgetary concerns surrounding SB 5280 and adjusting statutes of limitations for CSA, we must ask ourselves: Can we afford the cost of inaction? The lives and well-being of countless children are at stake, and it is our responsibility to protect them.

It is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of children over short-term financial concerns. We urge lawmakers to look beyond the immediate budgetary implications and consider the long-term costs of inaction. We encourage readers to support SB 5280, push for adjusting statutes of limitations for CSA, and contact their local representatives and the governor’s office to voice their concerns and advocate for the necessary resources to address these critical issues.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of countless children and work towards a safer, more accountable future for all. And if this table does not serve the people, then we must be prepared to figuratively flip it and demand better protections for our children.

Introduction:

One of the most common responses I’ve heard from Jehovah’s Witnesses, including my own father, when faced with the debunking of their beliefs is something along the lines of, “Well, it may not be perfect, but it’s still the best available.” This sentiment is often expressed after acknowledging the imperfections within the organization, but still holding on to the belief that it is the best option out there. In this blog post, we will explore how we can address this feeling by embracing harm reduction as a guiding principle, and how it can help us break down walls and overcome obstacles in our lives.

During my time in pioneer school at the Watchtower Educational Center in Patterson, New York, I remember our instructor emphasizing the importance of finding the principle behind the rules, claiming that understanding these principles could lead to personal freedom. One such principle that stood out was preventing harm. While it may not always be possible to completely avoid harm, adopting harm reduction as a guiding principle can provide a valuable framework for decision-making in various aspects of life.

Harm Reduction: A Guiding Principle

Personal choices: Adopting harm reduction as a guiding principle can help individuals make more conscious and thoughtful choices in their personal lives. This could involve considering the potential consequences of their actions on themselves and others, and seeking to minimize any negative impact.

Relationships: In our relationships with others, embracing harm reduction can promote empathy, understanding, and compassion. By prioritizing the well-being of others and striving to reduce any potential harm, we can build stronger, more supportive connections with those around us.

Community involvement: When engaging with our communities, whether through volunteering or advocacy work, the principle of harm reduction can help guide our efforts to create meaningful change. By focusing on reducing harm for marginalized or vulnerable populations, we can work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society.

Environmental stewardship: Harm reduction can also be applied to our relationship with the environment. By considering the impact of our actions on the planet and striving to reduce our ecological footprint, we can contribute to a more sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come.

The Freedom in Understanding Principles

Understanding and applying the principle of harm reduction in various aspects of our lives can indeed bring about a sense of freedom. By focusing on the underlying principles behind rules and regulations, we can move beyond dogmatic thinking and embrace a more flexible and adaptable approach to life. This shift in mindset can lead to personal growth, stronger relationships, and a more profound sense of purpose.

Conclusion:

Embracing harm reduction as a guiding principle allows us to navigate the complexities of life with greater clarity and purpose. By focusing on reducing harm and prioritizing the well-being of ourselves, others, and the environment, we can foster personal growth and contribute to the betterment of the world around us. By seeking to understand the principles behind the rules, we can break free from dogmatic thinking and experience the freedom that comes from living a more conscious and intentional life. In doing so, we can show ourselves and others that there is indeed something better out there.

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently stumbled upon a remarkable artistic endeavor that I just have to share with all of you. The Literary Music Series, founded by the incredibly talented Natalie Vargas Nedvetsky, is an intimate and thought-provoking experience that combines music and poetry in a truly unique way.

What especially resonates with me is the series’ exploration of building a brighter future and the connections between our past, present, and future selves. Natalie’s vision and words, along with her beautiful combinations of music and poetry, remind us of our shared human experiences and how these connections can inspire and uplift us.

Episode 6, entitled “A Hero’s Journey – Fate and Destiny in Virgil’s Aeneid,” is a perfect example of this inspiring theme. Through a captivating exploration of fate, heroism, loss, and redemption, the episode features Richard Strauss’s Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 18, and Rachmaninov’s Prelude in B Minor, Op. 32 No. 10. This powerful combination of music and poetry truly captures the essence of the series and its ability to connect us to something greater.

The series has come a long way since its inception in 2020, with its roots in online performances during the height of the pandemic. Now, it has evolved into live concerts and a podcast, which recently released it’s first episode on Spotify Episode 7 is now available for streaming as podcast, while the previous six episodes can be enjoyed as video content on YouTube.

I highly recommend giving the Literary Music Series a listen, whether you’re a fan of music, poetry, or both.
Jetstream Webshield, a renowned cybersecurity company, has recently come under fire for questionable business practices that raise serious ethical concerns. The company, which claims to provide cutting-edge firewall and content filtering solutions, has been accused of suppressing information that challenges its self-proclaimed superiority in the industry.

An investigation into Jetstream Webshield’s content filtering system has revealed that the company actively blocks any content that questions its effectiveness or superiority. Furthermore, it has been discovered that the company also suppresses any content that threatens the integrity, ethics, morality, or even the retirement plans of its core list curators, known as the guardians of doctrines. This practice has reportedly led to the isolation of over 8 million units worldwide, effectively creating a cult-like environment where users are prevented from accessing alternative perspectives and unbiased information.

The company’s content filtering strategy appears to be designed to prevent users from discovering potential flaws in Jetstream Webshield’s services, stifling any criticism or unfavorable comparisons to competing cybersecurity solutions. This manipulation of information has raised red flags among industry experts, who argue that such tactics are deceptive and exploitative.

Many users have come forward, sharing their experiences of being misled and manipulated by Jetstream Webshield. They report feeling trapped within a digital echo chamber, unable to access objective information about the company’s services or explore alternative cybersecurity options.

The exposure of Jetstream Webshield’s unethical practices has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater transparency and accountability in the cybersecurity industry. Experts are urging organizations to carefully evaluate their cybersecurity partners and to seek unbiased, third-party evaluations of the services they use.

In response to these allegations, Jetstream Webshield has issued a statement defending its content filtering practices, claiming that its primary objective is to protect users from harmful and misleading information. However, the company has yet to address the concerns raised by the investigation or offer any concrete steps to rectify the situation.

As the controversy surrounding Jetstream Webshield continues to unfold, it serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of transparency, accountability, and critical thinking in the digital age. It is essential for organizations and individuals alike to be vigilant and discerning when selecting cybersecurity solutions, and to demand honesty and integrity from the companies they entrust with their digital security.
