Jesus is approached by a mother who is in a desperate situation. She needs something in her life.

In the midst of it all Joseph remained patient and kept his testimony intact. He did not see himself as a victim, but as a victor waiting for his liberty! Through it all, he refused to be a victim. (Gen. 39:23) I want us to see Joseph in his prison. His experiences there have some much needed lessons for the people of the Lord. (Jn 16:33) (Heb. 13:5)

Intro: Today, we celebrate the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Today, we celebrate the greatest event on the Christian calendar. I am glad Jesus was born. I praise God for the life He lived. But I rejoice that He rose again from the dead. If He had not come out of that grave, we would still be lost and in our sins. (Eph. 2:1&12)
After the death of Jesus were a hopeless time for His disciples. Many of His followers watched Him die a horrible death. It was over. He was dead. He was gone. It was a time of hopelessness, of shattered dreams, of broken hearts.

Intro: The scene is the throne of God. Time has ceased to exist; it is now eternity. The saints of all ages have gathered to see Jesus. There we read of the mighty throne where great bursts of light flash forth from God. John said it was more dazzling than a glittering diamond or a shining ruby. There a curved rainbow encircled his throne. (Rev.4:8) (Rev. 4:11 KJV) (Rev. 5:1-4, LB) The scroll in the hand of God is the great volume of judgment about to fall upon planet earth during the Tribulation Period. No mortal can touch the book, nor can the angels. (Rev.5:5, LB) Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah! As He takes the scroll from the Father, all of heaven erupts with a new song. (Rev.5:9,10; LB) (Rev.5:12, LB) These eyes of mine will one day behold it all! I shall see Him as He truly is!

As Moses climbed the mountain of leading God’s people, he became discouraged because of the burdens he had been called upon to bear. As a result, he came to the place where he just wanted to throw in the towel and quit.
This passage gives us insight into why this event occurred in the life of Moses. Hopefully, it also teaches us some truths we need when we fight the battles of discouragement day by day.

Jesus is coming back one day. Did you know that? I’m being totally serious. One day, unannounced in the church bulletin, without a Facebook event, no crazy video promotions, Jesus is just going to show back up and take His children out of this world. This event is called the Rapture of the Church, and it’s not something we talk about very much anymore. It’s one of those things that makes us sound crazy when we start talking about it, so we don’t. But today, we’re going to talk about it because God said so. I won’t have time to do an in-depth analysis chasing a bunch of theories about timing or definitive definitions of what this experience will look like. All you need to know for today is that this event is real, it will happen, and you’ll have responsibility for whether you’ll participate in it if it happens in your lifetime.

The world, the flesh and the devil will all conspire to get us to quit on God…to cause us to drop out or to fall far short.

INTRO: Our text is one that might be familiar to many of you sitting in this room today. If it’s not, no worries, I’ll bring you up to speed. Our text is an excerpt from Paul’s letter to several assemblies of believers in Galatia. This would have been in the region we know today as Turkey. The book of Galatians, as a whole, is aimed at combating legalism in those assemblies. This provides an excellent backdrop for the theology of the believer being justified by grace through faith in the work of Jesus Christ rather than by earning one’s way into heaven based on merit or strict observance of the Mosaic law. Within the argument, Paul drops a great litmus test for the Galatians and for believers today. Chapter five presents a great dichotomy of the works of flesh contrasted to the fruit of the Spirit. As we open this series on the fruits of the Spirit, let’s explore what the scriptures reveal about the nature of the fruit of the Spirit in the believer’s life.

Intro: The Barna Research Group has found that 33% of Americans are unchurched; it found that 20% of those believe that living a good life will gain them a place in heaven. Given those two statistics alone, that tells us that 53% of Americans are unsaved and (if something does not happen probably) on their way to hell.This does not take into account the people who are atheists, or are involved in occult forms of worship. And if we were to throw all the false professors that do go to church into the mix it would probably be 75% or possibly much higher, which, is the percentage Jesus referred to in the parable of the soils.
That is why Jesus said, “The harvest truly is plentiful.” There are people to reach; there is a work to be done. And one of the greatest dangers of the modern church is that we don’t see this as the most important work.

An Eternal Perspective

INTRO: Perspective is in an interesting word. Thursday, some co-workers and I were talking about our varying perspectives on how long a year is. Think about it. When you’re graduating Kindergarten at the seasoned old age of 5, one year represents 20% of the life you’ve lived. When you’re 18 and graduating high school, one year represents 5.5% of the life you have already lived. When you’re a dad in your mid 30’s, that same year is only 2.9% of the life you’ve lived. When you’re freshly retired in your late 60’s, that same year- long period represents only 1.5% of the life you’ve lived. In the range of perspectives from a five-year old kindergarten graduate to that of a 67-year old retiree, one year means completely different things. Or better yet, ask a five-year old to wait a year for something. Compare that response with a 67-year old having to wait a year. You’ll see two completely different perspectives. Perspective matters. The same is true in our Christian walk. To live a transformed life, we must acquire and live with an eternal perspective.

The Conduit to the World

It is no secret that the world we live in is in desperate need of the power and intervention of Jesus Christ. We live in a busted and broken world that seems to grow more dismal every day. What does the Bible say the church can do about this? We are the body of Christ, but I believe we don’t appreciate the grand design in God’s plan to express Himself to this world through the church. If the world needs an encounter with Jesus, by what path will they encounter Him? What will be the conduit that delivers His power to the world that needs it? Jesus created the church, and the church has a specific function. We’ve got work to do. As we dig into the opening of Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, let’s see where we fit into Jesus’s grand plan of ministry in the church age.

Intro: Have you ever experienced the heartbreak of a shattered dream? When our dreams are shattered it often leaves us devastated, confused and upset. Sometimes we might be tempted to think that God has forgotten us and our dreams. I wonder how Joseph felt. I wonder if he questioned the dreams God had already given him, (Gen. 37:5,9). Look at these verses… If they teach us anything, they teach us that life can seem incredibly unfair at times. They teach us that life doesn’t always go like we think it will. But, these verses also remind us, God is still in control! If God gave the dream to begin with, it will become a reality.

Intro: What we have in these verses is a list of the officers who served in David’s court along with the duties each carried out. It must have been a great honor to be chosen by the king for a place of service. But, have you ever considered that the Lord chooses out men and women to serve Him? (Eph. 2:10) (1 Cor. 12:4-6,11) This list of officials from David’s kingdom can teach us some lessons about serving the Lord:
1. Each Person Had A Place Of Special Service.
2. Each Person Was Called By Name. (Mt. 10:29-31)
3. Each Person Served In A Different Capacity.
4. Each Person Was Placed Where They Were By The King. (Eph. 4:16 (NLT)
I want to look at the man named Joash. Here is a man who was in a place of special service to the king. You might wonder what you and I can learn from a passage such as this. Well, we can learn a lot about faithfulness to the Lord during our service.

As we consider the story of Samson, you’ll see a man gifted by God, but consumed with himself. You’ll see a man of great strength eventually crippled by an internal weakness. Then, you’ll see a man broken by life, and restored by God. I believe this man’s life calls to each of us today offering both warning and hope. As we scratch the surface of Samson’s life today, lean in and see God’s path to restoration for you.

INTRO: God is faithful. God’s faithfulness is not something He does. Faithfulness is (part of) who God is, it is part of His character. But how do we know that God is faithful? If someone told you “I am a faithful person”, would you believe them, or would you want proof over a long period of time? Taking God at His word is never wrong. If He said it, it can be trusted. But how can we go from faith to truly knowing that He is faithful? We must experience Him and His faithfulness first hand … and my guess is that all of us have … even if we haven’t stopped to think about it yet. So, let’s examine how we can know that He is faithful.

We could not have accomplished all we have without the divine hand of God intervening. We prospered as a people who reverenced God as holy and sovereign, but I fear that is changing. Not only does our nation hang in the balance, but we must also apply this truth to our individual walks with the Lord. Daniel chapter five chronicles the events of the last party in Babylon and the end of that great empire. Scripture reveals the heart that brought God’s judgement on Babylon. Belshazzar’s life calls to us today from the pits of despair beckoning our hearts to humble ourselves and reverence the Lord.

INTRO: I can’t think of any role more critical to the advancement of the Kingdom than that of a dad. Dad, you’re important. When God made you a father, He entrusted to you a great responsibility and installed you to a tremendous place of honor. In this church, we stand behind you! If you doubt the importance of dad this morning, let me share a powerful statistic I came across just a few weeks ago. A study conducted in 2016 found the following results relating to the likelihood of a household to find Christ based on whom the first member of the house to be saved was. When a child was the first member of the family to be saved, the likelihood of the rest of the family finding Jesus was 3.5%. When mom is the first to find Jesus, that probability increases to 17%. But if dad finds Jesus first, batten down the hatches. There’s a 97% chance that the rest of the family will find Jesus. Dad, you’re important! Of the whole family, you have the greatest opportunity to save your family for eternity. Today, I want us to study a man who did just that. Let’s see what we can learn from the life of Noah.

INTRO: Life is full of choices. It is estimated that the average American adult makes approximately 35,000 decisions every day. Those of you who think you’re indecisive should feel a little bit better about yourselves now. Granted, all these decisions aren’t life altering. In fact, most are not, but some are. Hebrews 12:17 references one such choice in the life of Esau. Today, we’re going to look at the choice he made to sell his birthright to his brother Jacob for a bowl of bean soup. Esau was hungry, exhausted, and probably frustrated when he returned from the hunt without a kill. In a moment of weakness, he traded something money could not buy for a mere bowl of beans. In this moment of pressure, the quality of his heart was revealed and judged. If you could gaze into eternity, presumably into the halls of hell, I believe you might very well find Esau shoving morsel after morsel of food into his mouth trying to fill the eternal hunger of his carnality. Let this story serve as a warning to us to subdue the carnality of our flesh and pursue the blessings of God.

INTRO: In Matthew 4:19, one of the greatest invitations of all history was given to four fishermen on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Last week, we talked about that invitation. We talked about what Jesus meant when he said, “Follow me.” As exciting as it is to look on as we read the scriptural account, we can be even more excited to know that Jesus issues the same invitation to us today. Some of you heard it and accepted it last week as you agreed to follow Him. We learned last week that to follow Jesus means we will prioritize the mission. Then, we’ll make the trek, even when the trail is tough. Lastly, we’ll be committed to the plan for the fishing trip. This week, we’ll peel the onion of this story back a little further. When we follow Jesus to become fishers of men, He supplies the bait, takes us to the fishing hole, and we reel them in. So, who gets the fish on the hook? Many well-meaning Christians have missed a lot of fish by forgetting what part of the process they are responsible for. So, what is our role in evangelism? What is God’s role in evangelism?

INTRO: I’ve fished in a lot of places, from rivers to the gulf stream 90 miles off the coast. I’ve caught red snapper, amberjack, brim, catfish, flounder, and even some odd-looking creature that I think was a fish. In all that fishing, I’ve learned that catching is way more fun than drowning worms. I believe the same is true of our Christian walk. As we enter April and approach Easter, the most prolific holiday of the Christian faith, I believe God would draw our attention to the invitation Jesus gave to His disciples to become something more than fishermen. Jesus made these first disciples an offer they could not refuse. He offers them a life of purpose and significance. He offers them a thrilling adventure of perpetually angling for the souls of men. It came with one catch; they must accept the invitation to follow Him. But what does that mean? How did the disciples respond to “follow me?” More importantly, if Jesus is making us the same offer today, how do we follow Him?

INTRO: We need to raise up a generation ready and capable of possessing the promised land God has for them. To effectively do this, we must first be intentional about being different. God has called us to be Holy as He is Holy. As such, we had better live that way. Second, we need to internalize the truths of God’s Word. As the blood flows from the chambers of the heart, so should the teaching of the Law flow throughout our lives delivering nutrients and life to every part of us. Lastly, we do these first two things for the expressed purpose to be able to instruct our children in the ways and principles of the faith. Recognize that the words Moses spoke in Deuteronomy 32:45-47 were not idle rules and regulations. They were the ticket, the deed if you will, to the Promised Land. By those words, the nation could live long in the land. Likewise, by the teachings of scripture, we will be able to stand in this world in which we must occupy.
But how? The million-dollar question is, “How do I raise up a generation?”

INTRO: We see Moses final words to the nation of Israel in our text. Chapter 32 is a song which recalls the ups and downs of Moses engagement with the Israelites. If the Bible ever contained a country song, this was probably it. The entire book captures three distinct sermons from Moses, essentially his last words to the congregation. Last words are important, aren’t they? When former President Bush died, I heard repeatedly how his last words were, “I love you, son,” to former President George W. Bush. So, here in our text we have Moses last words. We see his heart for the people. He understood the world Israel was walking into, and he left them critical instructions to ensure their success. His words are timeless for believers throughout history, and especially to us today as we find ourselves existing and raising a generation in a land becoming increasingly more like that which the Israelites were getting ready to possess.

Why did Elisha respect Jehoshaphat? Why was it that this man who now found himself stranded, thirsty, and in terrible straits was described as respected of the prophet who carried a double portion of Elijah, the man who had slain the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel? This third chapter of II Kings is riddled with neat observations, but today, we’ll focus on what being Godly can mean to the “others” in your life. A Searching God (part 5)

TEXT: PSALM 139:23-24
INTRO: Revival will fall or spring-up! Not for just a few nights. But for months, and even years. And when God surprises us with His wonderful, powerful presence, we will never be the same.
Worship, preaching, and prayer will take on a new and different meaning. You and others will be humbled and broken, and lives will be changed. There will be, must be, true repentance. I believe God will not move in the lives of His people until they first lay their lives at His feet, asking Him to search their hearts as they repent of their selfish ways.

1. EXPOSING…
When the Holy Spirit of God starts exposing sin you will not believe the intensity of the services. Tears will flow as you rid your heart of anything that would grieve the Holy Spirit. It is sheer hypocrisy for any of us to want an anointing from God while holding on to harassing sins. Those who are willing to examine their hearts and become teachable receive a fresh touch from God.

2. EXPLORING…
(Psalm 139) All of us—are like ships floating into the Lord’s waters. He is pulling up alongside and saying, “I would like to come aboard.” If we want Jesus to truly work in our lives, we must yield to Him, giving Him complete lordship. We don’t really want God to touch the secret areas. It’s too uncomfortable, too painful. But we must remember there are no secrets with God. (Jn.5:6) (1Sam.16:7)

3. EXAMINING…
A Holy Spotlight…I think there are three different types of searches that we allow to happen in our lives. They come up often around revival. “Before you venture into these waters, it is important to first establish a few facts about the One doing the searching, the One who wants to climb aboard ship.” Yes, the One searching is God, and He does not want to harm us. (Heb. 4:12-13) When performing His search, His purposes are to expose sin and cleanse us from all wickedness.
God will work in us when we let Him. (Lam.3:40) and by all means we must let Him clean up what He finds. Some will not allow God to go any further than the surface of our hearts. (Mt 23:27-28) (Rev 3:16-17)

4. EXCLUDING…
The spot search means to let God get into selected areas of your life but not all of them. (Lk.18:18-23) Those who only allow God to spot check are the ones who always deflect the real issue. Eventually turning their back and walking away when the Lord nails them in the area of their greatest struggle.

5. ESTABLISHING…
This is the search that brings results—total cleansing, eternal fruit, and, of course, a true move of God. A cellar search is a complete search. He wants to shine the light of the Word in all the cobweb corners of your heart. He wants to expose those things that have been hidden in darkness.

There is a difference between making an impression and making an impact.
