Rdio Android app gets a refresh, adds ICS support and new design

Tune streaming service Rdio has just given its Android application a major makeover. Not only will the app experience the Ice Cream Sandwich treatment for the first time (happy, GNex owners?), but it’s also gotten a new look that’s easier on the eyes. Furthermore, Rdio added the ability to view user profiles, and also enhanced the app’s search capabilities. Amongst the rest of the improvements — some of which are being ported from the desktop client — are traits like top charts, recommendations and new releases. You can grab the free update now if you’re a current subscriber, otherwise you’ll have to jump on board before you can take the app for a spin.

Android Community Evening Wrap-Up: February 6, 2012

We had quite a few stories today, and the most interesting may well be the rumor of some Android-based HUD glasses from Google. There have been rumors suggesting a secret project is in the works to bring some augmented reality glasses to public testing soon. It will apparently only be for one eye, and on the side. Unfortunately, it’s not likely they will be see through – so don’t plan on becoming a ‘terminator’ quite yet.

Rumour: Galaxy S III Watching Its Weight, Reportedly 7mm Thin

Add another to the stack of rumours surrounding the upcoming Galaxy S III. This time, South Korea’s Electronic Times News reports that an unnamed source claims the quad-core, super AMOLED plus, Android 4.0 powerhouse will be enclosed in a Liquipel waterproofed chassis only 7mm thick, 1.49mm thinner than the Galaxy S II. Electronic Times News also reports that we could see the S III launched as soon as May, which would line up with Samsung’s statement earlier this month.

With technology becoming smaller and cooler, I would not be in the least bit surprised if this rumour turned out to be true. With such a thin profile and all the rumoured specifications swirling around, it seems the Galaxy S III is going to turn Galaxy Nexus owners on their head with an impressive device to tempt them into premature replacement.

LibreOffice Android port progresses to prototype

A few months ago we brought you news that LibreOffice, the open source offshoot of popular free office suite Open Office, was headed to Android. While it would be wrong to say that the team of developers is making rapid progress, progress is nonetheless being made. The prototype app for Android tablets (Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich) was recently shown off in a single screenshot. Without passing too much judgement this early in development, I can say this: for those frustrated with the relatively sparse feature-sets of mobile office suites like Google Docs, it’ll be well worth the wait.

Motorola Atrix 4G Soak Test About To Get Underway

Well folks it looks like the Atrix 4G soak test we previously told you about is finally about to commence. Motorola has indicated the following heads up on the imminent update:

“Tomorrow after 12 Central/10 Pacific, you will receive a pop-up message on your phone that will mark the beginning of the software pre-release test.”

Of course we speculate it’s likely the 4.5.141 software update bringing Gingerbread 2.3.5 and a few other enhancements. But part of me wants to reaaaaaaaaaally hope and believe it’s a surprise sweeter treat. Stay tuned with Talk Android for any further updates on the rollout of this mysterious update for Atrix 4G soak test participants.

Cowon extends its PMP line with Z2 Plenue

Believe it or don’t, there’s still plenty of people out there who just want a little flexible media playing in their mobile device, and at least six or seven of them haven’t already bought an iPod Touch. For that market, Cowon makes some stylish and acoustically sound products, which they’ve lately been loading with Android. The latest is the Z2 Plenue, and no, we don’t know what “Plenue” means, either. The device is on sale in South Korea now, but probably won’t make it outside of Asia for a few months at the very least.

Leaked Pics and Specs of the Ultra Thin HTC Ville

Some leaked pictures are giving us an exciting look at the HTC Ville, which will debut on T-Mobile in mid-2012. The Japanese site Ameblo repeats some of the rumored specs we’ve reported, including a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Series 4 processor, and an 8-megapixel camera. The audio system will be sporting Beats Audio, and the battery will be 1650 mAh. Remarkably, the phone will be packed into a housing of approximately 8mm. That would make it thinner than the iPhone!

The phone is supposed to run Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC Sense 4.0, but the leaked photos show the Ville running what looks to be Sense 3.0. You can, however, see the amazing slimness of this new device. We’re still hoping to see the phone at Mobile World Congress in a few weeks.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus in White official: Coming February 13

We knew it was coming but today Samsung made it official. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus in white is real, and coming soon. It will be available starting on February 13th and will be identical to the regular model — only white as snow. Sadly it being available so late it has missed the snow for many markets, but then that depends on where you live.

Google clarifies CDMA debacle: still supporting developer phones, not publishing AOSP code

After a firestorm of controversy late last week, Google, Verizon and a lot of others caught flack for apparently abandoning support of the CDMA flavors of its developer devices: the Galaxy Nexus and Motorola XOOM on Verizon, as well as the older Nexus S 4G. After the devices disappeared from the listings on the Android.com developer portal. The only thing remaining for any CDMA device is the early builds for the Galaxy Nexus, and those are marked as “for reference only”. This led to speculation that Google had halted support for said devices, and in a way, they have.
