End of Year Giving

Tax filing is around the corner, to ensure the deductibility of your 2011 church contributions, please do not file your 2011 income tax return until you have received a written acknowledgement of your contributions from the church. Under rules enacted in 1994 by the IRS, you may lose a deduction for some contributions if you file before you receive this acknowledgement.

Your end of year gifts must be postmarked by Saturday, December 31, 2011 or received or received by Saturday, December 31, 2011 in order to be included on your 2011 contribution statement.

Office Hours the last week of 2011:

Monday, Dec. 26: Offices are closed
Tuesday, Dec. 27: Offices are closed
Wednesday, Dec. 28: Offices are open between the hours of 8 a.m. & 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 29: Offices are open between the hours of 8 a.m. & 4:30 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 30: Offices are closed
Saturday, Dec. 31: Worship Service at 6 p.m.

If you need to arrange a pick-up or meeting to drop a gift off after office or service hours please call Jason Golden in the Financial Office (601) 544-0100 or on his cell (601) 467-6982.

We will have your 2011 contribution acknowledgments in the mail by the third week of January.

Prayer Letter from Missionaries James and Kristie

We have arrived. After over two years of applications and interviews and trainings, we are in our home city in South Asia. Thank you for your prayers and support during this extensive process, and continue to pray for us as we seek to work and minister effectively here.

After our training in Virginia, we quickly repacked our 13 bags and 1 guitar for the three-flight journey to South Asia (4-flight if you count the 2-hour flight to our home city after arriving), re-evaluating which items would be priorities during our 3+ years away from the USA. Rebekah did amazingly well on the two long flights, although it would have been a lot easier if she cared anything about kid movies. Perhaps we should have exposed her to them from birth.

We arrived at our hotel the first night at 2 AM, with the previous day’s national paper informing us that “Jobs Takes the iWay to Heaven”—teaching us not only that Steve Jobs had passed away during our trip, but that sensitivity to a man dying sometimes took second place to a catchy headline. We spent five days in the capital city trying to get adjusted to what our schedules would look like over the next 3 years. Because of all the noises and people and traffic right outside our hotel, we were really worried that Rebekah would be clingy and withdrawn. Fortunately, however, after the initial shock of the constant horns honking, she was more of a trooper than we were. She was telling everyone who would listen that she “loves South Asia,” she asked James to walk down to the automotive repair yard when he just wanted to take a nap, and the guards at the hotel stopped her and a couple of our co-workers’ children from escaping our hotel a few times.

The air-conditioned hotel and international airport did not prepare us for the weather we encountered upon stepping off the plane in our city. The weather wasn’t South Mississippi hot for July or August, but was definitely tropical and much hotter than Fall in the USA. The past few days have been spent just trying to survive. We have much better water, electricity, and internet service than we expected to have, although we have done without all three for extended periods during our first few days in country. As with many places in the world, acquiring furniture, learning to navigate and drive in the city, and making sure Rebekah isn’t locking herself in rooms in our apartment then going to sleep on the floor while we wait for the landlord to bring his set of keys.

Along with showing some of our travels with Rebekah during our last few months in the States, we plan on posting some pictures to our blog from our town in the coming weeks, so keep checking back to see what we see from what we affectionately call our “apartment beneath the cell phone tower.” As you check back, please pray for us about the following requests this month:

Language Study begins Monday. Did we mention our first language helper will be a local imam? We want to jump right into “the real work,” but pray that we take the long view and see how much more work we’ll accomplish knowing the language.
Ministry Outlets abound. Many places surround us that both of us could throw ourselves into for teaching, but pray that we will know just the right places to spend our time and efforts.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child has begun! You can change a child’s life this year by filling a shoebox with gifts and returning it to First by November 20. We are giving away boxes at the OCC booth in the Atrium. Our goal this year is 1,200 boxes. Come on, change a life this year for Christmas! Want to know more? Check out www.samaritanspurse.org/OCC.

First Hattiesburg is also serving as a regional collection site for OCC this year. That means that churches all over the Pine Belt will be dropping off their OCC boxes at First during the week of November 14. From here they will be driven to Samaritan’s Purse headquarters in Atlanta, then shipped all over the world. If you would be willing to help us out during collection week, stop by the OCC booth in the Atrium and sign up!
