After I returned from the San Diego Comic-Con earlier this week, I kept getting asked countless times over what the best thing I saw was the whole time. So to answer that question for everyone, I thought I'd throw together a quick recap of this year's Comic-Con and list my favorite panels and the best footage. While I generally knew what was coming and had my eye set on a few particular films, not only did they all deliver, but there were certainly a few exciting surprises as well. This year may not go down as the greatest year in Comic-Con history, as Paramount's absence was truly felt, but it certainly will be remembered! Read on for the list of my favorite presentations and the best footage from Comic-Con 2008!

To help set you in the right mood, I've added some costume photos that coordinate with each respective movie. Click each one to see them full-size. All of the costumes are from this year's Comic-Con.

1. Watchmen - I knew this was going to be the best of Comic-Con before it even began and boy did it deliver. The five-minute extended trailer we saw was truly breathtaking, even more than the first trailer. Instead of Smashing Pumpkins, the music this time was some sort of gospel-like orchestral played over some of the best visuals from the film, including Nite Owl and Silk Spectre kissing while a nuke explodes behind them, extended shots of Rorschach and the ink changing in his mask, and the scene where the original Minutemen are getting their photo taken. I also loved seeing how R rated it would be, where any time Dr. Manhattan would blow people up, you could actually see their bones and organs exploding as well. It was truly amazing and I've got a feeling this may even top The Dark Knight next March!

2. Terminator Salvation - This was the most delightful surprise of all of Comic-Con. I heard that McG was cool guy, but he truly took the crowd by storm just as Jon Favreau had done the year before for Iron Man. And the footage he brought was fantastic! I finally have an immense amount of confidence in McG and the entire creative team behind Terminator Salvation. The footage we were shown was yet again rough, but entirely composed with practical effects - no CGI had been finished by this time. And I was amazed that most of what they shot looked so good. As with any post-apocalyptic movie, it felt a bit like Mad Max, even with a racing scene involving shotguns and various punked out cars. But in the end, I had this gut reaction that kept telling me this is going to be frickin' badass. Christian Bale's intensity is what fueled it the most - he has some awesome scenes with Sam Worthington and others.

3. The Day the Earth Stood Still - The second biggest surprise of Comic-Con behind Terminator Salvation. I thought the first trailer looked pretty damn good, but I wasn't expecting the incredibly beautiful cinematography with lush dark green colors, great visual effects, and immense intensity that Keanu Reeves would bring to the movie. We saw the full scene where Keanu is being interrogated first and it went from mild to "holy sh*t" in a matter of seconds. And the extended trailer truly made my jaw drop by the end. I'm a big sci-fi nut and this looks like it has everything I could ever ask for in a sci-fi remake, including quality acting. Even after Watchmen and Terminator Salvation and Wolverine, I am still just as excited for The Day the Earth Stood Still.

4. Ninja Assassin - The most underrated movie of all of Comic-Con and it still kicked my ass! If you're unfamiliar with this gem of a movie, Ninja Assassin is V for Vendetta director James McTeigue's latest film. While filming Speed Racer with Rain over the summer, they came up with the idea of making a full-fledged ninja movie and thus the idea for this project was born. The trailer we saw was insane! That's actually probably an understatement - it was bloody as hell, exciting as hell, and badass as hell. Not only is it the first mainstream ninja movie I've ever seen, but it looked stunning. McTeigue may only be directing his second feature film, but this guy's got style and Ninja Assassin looks like it's going to kick ass!

5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine - I'm probably the only one who didn't completely love the Wolverine footage and that's because there were honestly some problems with it. I know that it was all rough, unfinished footage and that it needed plenty of polishing, but that played into my reaction. Seeing Gambit and Wolverine and Sabretooth was all good and exciting, but it really looked too cheesy. When you compare something as perfectly refined as The Dark Knight to Wolverine, it was like comparing an expensive diamond to a dirty rock. I hope in time they clean it all up, but what I saw just look a bit too over-the-top for an Oscar winning director and someone as talented as Hugh Jackman. Too many explosions, too many colorfully cheesy shots, and an unnecessary need to expand the story into a team of superheroes.

6. Red Sonja - Although they haven't even begun shooting, Robert Rodriguez and the beautiful Rose McGowan presented some great looking promo photos and posters (which you can see here). I was honestly impressed with what I saw and when the two of them, in combination with the film's director Douglas Aarniokoski, talked at length about their interest in the mythology of Red Sonja and Conan as well as the direction the film would be going in, I felt like this could end up being pretty awesome. There wasn't much to go off of, but I thoroughly enjoyed the panel and was excited to see what they were going to come up with when shooting begins later this year.

7. Tr2n - The reason this isn't higher on my list is because I actually missed the official presentation during Disney's panel. Thankfully the wonders of the internet allowed me to actually watch the trailer, albeit in very bad quality, and in turn I felt I needed to include it on this list. The footage would've been breathtaking in person in high definition, but even the version I saw made me excited at the end. In combination with this news about John Lasseter's involvement has instantly shot this movie high up on my most anticipated list for the next few years (since it's not actually due out until 2010). Easily one of the best surprises at Comic-Con that has shown many people what true talent is capable of creating.

8. Tropic Thunder - Technically this wasn't a panel or a presentation, but I did have the chance to see it at Comic-Con and it kicked some serious ass! I've got a soft spot for war movies and this fit right into that niche on top of being one of the funniest comedies all year long. This is definitely going to give Apatow's Pineapple Express a run for its money and it will probably end up somewhere near the top of my best of the year list as well. I knew it would be good from the trailers, but it definitely surpassed all of my expectations, and it's always a relief when a highly anticipated movie does that. When I wasn't laughing my ass off, I was definitely smiling and enjoying all that the movie offered.

9. Friday the 13th - Last but not least is this lone horror remake that needs some extra special attention. Although I visited the set and liked what I saw, I still wasn't fully sold. Not until the trailer, and especially the last scene where Jason chases down a girl lying on the ground, did I realize that this movie is going to kick some serious ass. I don't care that it's not a direct remake of the first Friday the 13th or that it's not as faithful to the tone of the originals, because it looks entertaining and intense and that's what it needed to capture my interest. I want a movie that is going to scare the living crap out of me and also be entertaining and I think this Friday the 13th remake is going to do just that.

There were a few key presentations I missed, including Drag Me to Hell and Land of the Lost as well as a few others, but alas we'll get our taste of those soon enough. And as for let downs, Frank Miller's The Spirit tops the list and Max Payne comes in a close second. I had high hopes for both and both looked pretty bad - not what I was hoping to see for either. Coming off of Comic-Con this year, I feel like there's an exciting line-up of movies in the works, from Watchmen next March to Terminator Salvation next May to The Day the Earth Stood Still this December to Ninja Assassin next January. Another Comic-Con down and another twelve months to go until we do it all over again! What are you looking forward to the most?

For as long as I can remember, my fans have been asking me, "Bob, what makes you tick?" Well, to help answer that question, I thought I would document my trip to the Dharma Initiative booth on the floor of the Con, which you can see in this video. They threw everything they had at me, but I handled each question with the grace of an ox and passed with flying colors. They invited me to take the follow up test online (dharmawantsyou.com). They had all these multiple-choice answers that didn't make much sense, So I have included the answers that I would have given to those questions below. One last teaser video to hold you over until the main event early next week. Read on and enjoy this video!

You just stole a sick child's toy. Why?

A tortoise is on its back in the sun. You're not helping it. Why?

You are lying down on the edge of a cemetery. Why?

You are sitting on your bed with a sharp knife. Why?

Hi friends, it's your friend Bob $tencil…

So I just remembered what happened during the Seth Rogen panel. As I mentioned earlier, I was all set to slam him for that shitty "Fear Factor" show when I completely spaced out. At first I was upset because someone needs to be held accountable for that garbage, but then I realized that the world in my mind is way radder than the one the rest of you schmucks have to deal with, and I was happy to let Seth (who apparently thinks he's Charles Sagan) drone on about space and physics and all that other made up bullshit while I was off laying pipe in lala land. Thanks to my crew, I was somehow able to capture this moment on celluloid and put it together for you.

As you may already know, Bacon and Sean and the rest of my crew are hard at work on my final video, and should have it wrapped up in time for me to review when I get back from vacation on Friday and tell them its shitty and have them completely re-work it in time for release early next week.

Fly high my friends.

We've been talking about the upcoming Friday the 13th remake for quite a while but have only recently begun to see the first photos of the new Camp Crystal Lake and its resident serial killer Jason Voorhees. I decided to catch the panel on Sunday afternoon at Comic-Con for the remake just to check out any new footage that they were showing and damn, was I in for a treat. I've never counted myself amongst the Friday the 13th fans, but after watching the trailer they put together for Comic-Con, I'll genuinely admitted that I'm pumped as hell. The way the trailer ends should leave any appreciative horror fan completely riled up for this remake.
Not only do we got an early look at the previously mentioned trailer, but we've got the first high resolution look at the teaser poster straight from Comic-Con below.

Although it wasn't necessarily a full house in Ballroom 20 on Sunday, the crowds were energetic and loud enough to earn the trailer a second viewing - a rare feat at Comic-Con. Additionally, the new teaser poster seen below courtesy of IGN also debuted during the panel. They've said it before, but the producer's reiterated again that this Friday the 13th is a stand alone film, not designed to setup sequels in any fashion, but of course continuable if its successful next February. However, I don't think my words speak any louder than Jason's machete, so we'll let you enjoy this leaked version of the Comic-Con trailer below. I don't normally mentioned leaked trailers, but I thought this time it might be worth checking out.

[See post to watch Flash video]

I absolutely love the shot at the end of the girl on the ground and Jason running up at full speed about to hack the crap out of her. When you watch this in full high resolution, that scene is intense as hell! It's not just a "wimpy" little Jason like the very first 1980 Friday the 13th, this guy is hardcore! He moves fast, swings hard, and has no remorse, just like Jason should. True fans should wait to give this a real opinion until the see the trailer in high resolution and not just from a cellphone bootleg. It honestly looked great and I can't wait to see an actual trailer in theaters as well. Hopefully this will start converting fans!

Friday the 13th is directed by ex-music video director Marcus Nispel, of 2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Pathfinder previously. The screenplay for this reboot was penned by writing partners Damian Shannon and Mark Swift of Freddy vs Jason previously. Although this Friday the 13th is not a sequel, it is technically the 11th film in the franchise and follows Jason's last apperance in Freddy vs Jason in 2003. Friday the 13th is currently set to open on Friday, February 13th, 2009.

Anticipation was only at about medium last week during Lionsgate's panel for The Spirit at the San Diego Comic-Con. Most people really didn't know what to expect. As for me, I found myself unimpressed with the first teaser trailer from a few months back and really needed some reassurance on it, especially from the film's writer and director Frank Miller. While Alex already live blogged the entire panel as it took place on Friday, I thought I'd recap all that took place and give my own opinion on Frank Miller's solo directorial debut. Although I wasn't exactly excited before I arrived at Comic-Con, Frank Miller's presentation has instilled just a bit more confidence in me. I truly hope it delivers!

The legendary Frank Miller took the stage first, looking like a 'gangsta' with his fedora-like hat. He started off by reminiscing about his long-time friendship with Spirit creator and comic legend Will Eisner, who passed away in 2005, with great honor and sincerity. While looking back, Frank joked that he had argued with Eisner for 25 years about how comics were made and the direction the industry would go. So when the idea for The Spirit came across his lap, he almost turned it down, "for about three seconds," but thought about how bad it would be if someone else ended up making it. Luckily, the company that owned the rights was pretty adamant about Miller's involvement and were happy to give him his solo directorial debut.

Producer Deborah Del Prete explained that she had always wanted to do a comic book movie and jumped at the opportunity to work on The Spirit. With all these forces in motion, Miller was not as worried about finding an actor to play the Spirit (it ended up being Gabriel Macht) as he was about finding someone who could play his nemesis, the Octopus. He thought "we need someone who can scare the hell out of everybody." Who better than that badass mutha fucka Samuel L. Jackson?

Jackson came off as really cool and nonchalant, but also looked quite happy to be there (this wasn't his first time at Comic-Con). I've seen clips of him in the past and he always turns out to be a big treat for the audience. For those who don't know, the Octopus was always a faceless character in the story. All they ever showed was his ominous gloves with little tentacle looking lines on them. Miller had to figure out "how to put flesh and bone and voice to the Octopus." Jackson asked what he should wear in the film and Miller really gave him a sense off freedom with it. At one point in the footage, we saw Jackson is dressed like a Nazi, amongst other wacky outfits. He went on to comment about how much fun it was to make the film and how great it was to work with Frank. "Frank is extremely open as a director… very egoless."

As for weaponry, you might've noticed a quick flash of some huge ass guns in the latest trailer. Jackson explained that almost every day while shooting, he would ask for bigger guns. "It got to the point where I was just sticking guns together," says Miller. Apparently the finished gun product was so big they had to rig up a pulley system to hold the guns in the air since Jackson couldn't hold onto them on his own. Miller even jokingly said he "looked like a Transformer robot" because he had so man big frickin' guns strapped to him.

As I said initially, I didn't care for the teaser when I first saw it, mostly because it looked like it could have been Sin City 2 and not something reminiscent of Will Eisner's work. However, seeing the footage that Miller showed us at Comic-Con gave me a better feel for the film. It is not going to be all black and white with some red mixed in. It does have a Sin City look in the direction, but with more color. They did show a scene that was shot with a "phantom camera" to simulate a person swimming underwater without actually being underwater, which did not come off well at all, but other than that it looked kind of fun. It is going to have very cartoony violence with some adult themes. It will be goofy and unbelievable, but I think that's the point. I have hope, but I'm not gonna set the bar too high. We're on the last stretch of Bob $tencil coverage, but he's definitely still got quite a few surprises for all of us. We've posted three awesome daily video recaps (see the links below) and have added another blog today and will finish out this week with some additional videos. Bob $tencil will be bringing us a short Comic-Con recap tomorrow, another "Lost" video on Wednesday, and the granddaddy of them all, a final big Comic-Con video later on in the week. Until then, his latest blog can be found below as well as some hilarious photos from his last days on the show floor. We hope you've enjoyed Bob's coverage of the grand Comic-Con so far and hopefully you're excited for the last few updates that we'll be bringing you.

Dateline: Comic Con

Day 4: Sunday

Well friends, Bob $tencil here, checking in with you swingers for the fourth and final day of Comic Con. Not too much to report here for today. I talked to a giant tomato babe who was part of this website that either condemns or promotes the spreading of salmonella, depending on if you look at the gin glass half-full or half-empty. [Editor's Note: I personally refuse to look at glasses of gin less than 94% filled.]

Anywho, after that I partook in that "Dharma and Greg Initiative" jabberwocky that those Austrian people had set up in the Exhibit Hall. Everyone was talking about how unique the experience was of answering odd questions whilst being videotaped, but I didn't think so. Hell, in order to pass my gym class at my secondary school (GO James K. Polk TARIFFBUSTERS!) we had to do the exact same thing with our teacher, only we were naked and crying. After that ended me and Bacon[sic] and that non-Bacon[sic] ethnic cameradude bid an acrid adieu to the 2008 Comic Con.

All in all, Comic Con International 2008 has proven to be my biggest success to date. I found out how "Lost" is going to end, made out with some anime babe, discovered that Guy Ritchie has an unapologetically hopeless man-crush on yours truly (Me), painted myself blue for my date with Malin Akerman, and some might say I even p-owned, as the kids say, Seth Rogen.

I could not have done all of this (and more) without the help of my fine, fine friends here at fistshov…I mean firstshowing.net. Teaming up with them to bring you my stellar coverage of Comic Con is the best collaboration I've been involved with since I collaborated with gin and beer back in the day (see also, this morning.) I certainly hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did not.

I have posted some of my favorite pictures from Comic Con and will post the rest of my favorite pictures and video clips over the next few days.

Well, I'm off to catch that new Batman flick even though every major news media outlet leaked the ending: Heath Ledger dies.

Dictated Not Read,

We began our Comic-Con 08 coverage with an extensive photo gallery from the show floor on Wednesday night, and we end our Comic-Con coverage with a set of photos from the final hours of geek heaven. With two hours left until the show floor closed until next July, I ventured back out with a camera in one hand, wallet in the other, to take some last minutes shots and pick up some last minute exclusives. What can I say, I'm a geek and I love Comic-Con as much as the next guy. Although we primarily only cover movies, I thought I'd give fans one last look at what it's like to step into geek heaven here in San Diego. So hopefully these last few photos convince just a few of you to join us next time for one of the best events all year.

Our complete coverage of Comic-Con isn't entirely finished just yet, as we have a few more exciting features arriving throughout this week. Although the show itself at the San Diego Convention Center has shut down and although I'm flying home, it doesn't mean all exciting news will instantly stop. We've got interviews with David Gordon Green and Seth Rogen from Pineapple Express, final overviews of our favorite previews and panels, and Bob $tencil's last big video. We hope you've enjoyed our coverage of Comic-Con 08 so far and we hope you stay tuned for the last little bit this week! Until next year…

We're wrapping up all of our Comic-Con coverage and there's a few things that we've missed but needed to catch up on. Both Watchmen and Terminator Salvation are coming out of Comic-Con with incredible buzz, so it's with great pleasure that I present eight new Watchmen posters from the show floor that were on display at the DC Comics' booth. Thanks to our Brazilian friends at Omelete for uploading some great photos of all eight posters, as they've haven't officially hit online until now. By March next year, all eight of these (and the characters in them) will be ingrained in our minds - because after these presentation at Comic-Con, I'm expecting Watchmen to be a huge hit and a phenomenal movie.
The imagery in all of these is fantastic and I commend Warner Brothers for sticking with a classic 80's style instead of going with something modern and sleek, like the posters for 300. Check them out below!

Besides these eight posters, there is not an official poster for the movie yet besides the David Gibbons' drawn poster that Zack Snyder debuted at last year's Comic-Con. I'm not sure whether these are official posters or not, but I expect Warner Brothers to be debuting a lot more different posters over the next few months anyway, so stay tuned for more! Thoughts on these eight?

Bob $tencil is back yet again to deliver one of the best videos so far! If you've never been to Comic-Con, you might not know that Bob $tencil's big thing is hassling the celebs in Hall H. And so far we haven't seen much of that in his daily updates. However, here's a video showing Bob at his best, connecting two panels at Hall H with the beer that he was given during the Lost panel. Everyone seemed to love his Day 2 Recap, so check this one out too, I'm sure it'll have you laughing. Bob catches up with the writers of Lost during their panel as well as Seth Rogen from Pineapple Express. And he's relentless yet again - hard-hitting questions for both, even Rogen. They're still working on a full Comic-Con video, but here is the latest recap.

Day 3: Saturday

My friends, your dear friend Bob $tencil unearthed the biggest mystery in television history. I had a chance to ask the writers of "Lost" how the series will end, and they actually told me! But not before they gave Me a sixer of that sudsy Dharma and Greg beer and some Jin. I can't quite remember everything that they said, but I think I remember something about Jack and Kate getting stuck in a snowstorm after leaving the chalet and beginning to wonder how their diverse upbringings will affect them as parents. So there you go, I just saved you another two seasons worth of "what the fuck's."

Now, anyone who knows and loves his friendly neighborhood Bob $tencil knows that when I'm drunk (or sober, for that matter) I like to peruse the ol' anime porn isle. So, there I was, minding my own boner when allovasudden I see this babe with green hair, big eyes, and a tiger skin bikini. Definitely my kind of gal! I could have made out with that babe all day, but if I make out with a babe all day then who will report on Comic Con? No one, that's who! The things I sacrifice for you people! So I kissed her goodbye and headed over to the Pineapple Express panel.

At this panel, I had a chance to talk with Seth Rogen. Now, everyone knows that $eth Rogen loves the Mary Jane as much as Spider-Man loves that broken neck girl. As for me, I seldom use pot, because unfortunately, it's against the law. That's why when I'm piloting a commercial airline, I usually stick to delicious legal booze. Although, by the time I had a chance to speak with Seth Rogen I was feeling pretty high. I think it was a combination of the Dharma brew, exhaust from a generator, and that joint I smoked. I think I was going to ask how he lives with himself knowing that he has rotted the American brain with that awful "Fear Factor" show. However, I was so shit-housed that I got distracted and asked something else. I can't remember much other than Seth dubbed Me the Creator of Comic Con. I am grateful for this distinction and inclined to forgive him for whatever mistakes he made earlier in his career.

Anywho… that was my Saturday. How was yours?

Fly high my friends.

Earlier today Disney presented a panel at Comic-Con on their two big upcoming animated movies: Bolt and Pixar's Up. We've already seen the trailer for Bolt, which looks absolutely hilarious, but so far we haven't heard a single peep about Up! In fact, the most we've seen is a logo, but no one even knows what it's about. Since Disney decided to break the tradition of attaching the newest trailer in front of each Pixar movie, our first glimpse of anything Up was revealed at Comic-Con this year. And damn was it a tearful introduction! Pixar's own Pete Docter, of Monsters Inc, debut some concept art and a few scenes from Up and it looks just as good as everything else we've seen from them over the years. Read on for more details.

Docter explained that Up is essentially an homage to our grandparents. Our hero is the 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Edward Asner), a short and square little man who walks with a cane. When he was young he met a girl and fell in love with her. Her dream was always to explore Paradise Falls in Venezuela, but unfortunately life got in the way and it never came true. Now Carl is an old widower and he sets off on his own to head down to South America to live out that dream before his life ends. Most of the movie takes place in the wonderfully envisioned mountains of Venezuela, where Carl eventually lands after his house sails south (see the logo with the balloons). As Docter said (and showed in concept art), we are off to a "lost world where anything can happen and will happen" and a world we've never seen before.

Along the way, Carl meets numerous other characters and creatures. One of them that Docter showed us was a young, chubby 9-year-old boy named Russell. He's collected all the merit badges (for the Wilderness Club) except one - assisting the elderly. So he stows away in Carl's house and floats with him down to Venezuela as well. We were shown the scene where Carl takes off in his house with all the balloons and starts floating through the air. It was a magical scene, but not like anything I've seen before. The best reference I can give for this and all of the concept art might be to call it Pixar's version of a Hayao Miyazaki film. In fact, Docter specifically addressed the legendary Japanese filmmaker saying "We're all huge fans of his. He's an amazing filmmaker." He goes on to say "Miyazaki pays so much attention to small details that make you feel like you're actually there. And we're trying to do that in this film as well."

Docter said that the first teaser trailer has debuted online and could be found exclusively on Disney's site: disney.com/pixar. We've posted it below for your viewing pleasure, so for the first look at Carl (the man on the porch) and Up, take a look at this short teaser clip below. Enjoy!

Watch the very first teaser for Pixar's Up:

[See post to watch Flash video]

Although Up instantly looks like another classic Pixar movie in the making, it's not quite at the level of Wall-E. Carl as a character seems incredibly entertaining, but he's not instantly lovable. Wall-E was so cute that everyone would fall in love with him the moment they saw him. Carl is a grumpy old man who we'll probably fall in love with and feel bad for by the end, but isn't specifically someone who initially comes across as a likable character (at least in my mind). Alas, as time goes on and we begin to see more from Up, being a Pixar fanboy, I'm sure I'll begin to fall in love with this as I have every other Pixar movie. As a finisher, Docter perfectly describes Up: "Pixar takes you to a lost world - it's a love story and it's a Pixar movie." Disney is releasing Up on May 29th, 2009 next summer.

"This is not the future my mother told me about."

The one and only big and exciting panel today was for McG's Terminator Salvation. Walking in, I was looking forward to something great, but I definitely wasn't expecting what they showed. McG took control of the crowd and in turn I'm certain this is probably going to be the most buzzed about movie coming out of Comic-Con this year. Not only didn't they show us an extended trailer with lots of awesome footage, but McG told the fans everything they wanted to hear and so much more. The biggest news of the day was that McG apparently convinced the Warner Brothers execs to let them shoot it how they want and thus it could end up being rated R in the end! Additionally, McG hinted that Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 model Terminator might make an appearance. I must say, this movie is really starting to look great.

McG started off by explaining that they're shooting the film with the "picture first" at all times. And there are two people, two Warner execs, who really care about the rating but he's been given their blessing to make a rated R movie if they shoot it that way. After making that announcement, McG went on to talk more about some details of the film before showing an extended trailer. When asked if we might see Arnold return in it, McG did say that "the 101 model is very much a part of the Terminator mythology" without specifically stating that he wouldn't return. A good sign? Who knows, but it definitely is a strong hint that Arnold (or at least a CGI Terminator based on his apperance) might show up in the movie.

Since Christian Bale couldn't be in attendance, McG called him in Japan (where he is still promoting The Dark Knight) because he promised that the crowd cheer loud enough to convince them to show the clip. McG said that if they crowd didn't cheer loud enough, he wouldn't show it at all. Unfortunately it went straight to voicemail, but he did leave a message and the crowd went wild. All of the footage we saw really didn't have any finished CGI - but that wasn't a problem. Since so much of the movie was shot practically, a lot of it already looked incredible and there was a lot of action (and explosions) anyway. It had sort of a Mad Max feel during some fight scenes in the post-apocalyptic world and around the destroyed 7-Eleven (that we've seen before), but overall it looked amazing. It won't feel like the first three Terminator movies at all, but it will definitely be an awesome movie on its own.

"If you saved us once in another future, you can save us in this one."

If you've seen the teaser trailer, you'll notice that it already has a distinct dull look - as in, it's not overly colorful by any means. McG says they've even shot it with that silver look to make it feel like it's set in that post-apocalyptic time. Terminator Salvation takes place in 2018 in the middle of the on-going war, which is years before anything we've seen in previous years. He confirmed that they've designed vehicles like harvesters, transports, hydrobots, and numerous others. "It's not a clean, comfortable future, it's a different future filled with duress. Machines stop through these landscapes harvesting people for different purposes." That claw that you see come down and grab someone during the trailer is actually one of the harvesters - which, as McG explains, "should speak to the size of the machine."

As for casting, McG explained that they hired Sam Worthington because they "needed someone who could be tough and could stand up to Christian Bale." And Anton Yelchin's role is to take on the character of Kyle Reese as we see him grow and become the character that Michael Biehn played in the first Terminator. Additionally, McG says about other cast that "it's a balanced world and they didn't want a bunch of white people running around calling the shots" - which is why they hired Common and Moon Bloodgood and it's why they play such formidable characters. Moon plays a pilot and her storyline is primaryily with Worthington, involving a relationship, but not that's not the focus by any means. All-in-all, the cast seems diverse and fantastic and one of the stronger points of this production.

I really didn't like the first teaser trailer that much, but the footage I saw today completely turned me around - this is going to be amazing (or so I hope). If you're still concerned, I leave you with this bit of wisdom. As McG explains, they're going to honor the mythology, but they can take a license to tell the most compelling story possible. So throughout the production they've met with everyone, from Arnold to James Cameron and so on, but haven't got too caught up in the timeline of the other movies or even the TV show because they'd rather just tell a good story. Even Sam Worthington chimed in to say that they wanted to take what Cameron's movies said about fate and humanity and increase and expand it in Terminator Salvation. And if that doesn't instill any more confidence in anyone, then there's no hope. However, I know I'm both confident and incredibly excited for this!

As everyone knows, yesterday was all about Watchmen at Comic-Con. In the midst of all of the excitement and chaos, our good friend Bob $tencil was able to get a few minutes with both Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Malin Akerman. Below you'll find the latest video update from Comic-Con and Bob $tencil's latest blog on all of Friday's happenings. If you thought this guy was smoothe, just wait until you see how he acts around the beautiful Malin.
Friday, I'm in love…

Well friends, today was a good day. I spent the majority of the day away from the nerds, and with the celebrities instead. The day started in Hall H with the Watchmen panel. This movie looks pretty jazzy! Supposedly it was a comic book before being a movie but there were too may words so I didn't bother reading it.

This movie stars one of the blue men of the Blue Man Group and he is HUGE! So this blue guy, Doctor Chicago or something, just goes around exploding people, not a very good doctor if you ask me. But the Charlies in the Vietnam scenes aren't the only ones with exploding chests, in exclusive Comic Con footage, Malin Akerman is seen opening up her shirt! But the idiot who edited the damn thing cut it just before it got to the good part… amateur!

The guy who plays Ozzymandrake accidently slipped and revealed that Manhattan gets destroyed in this movie. If you ask me it sounds like a rip off of that movie with the Cloverfield monster in it.

Anywho, after the Watchmen panel I got to speak with the entire cast one-on-one and even got to speak with one of my many famous friends from a previous Comic Con. The real belle of the balls was Malin Akerman, who plays the Silk Spectre, she fought her way through the crowd of entertainment reporters, publicists and twinks, just to speak with me. We hit it off, obviously, in fact as I dictate this worldwideweblog to Bacon [sic], I am simultaneously applying the finishing touches of blue paint to my body in preparation for my date with Malin (she's into blue guys I guess). Hey if she's into it, I'm into it.

Bacon is going to put together video of two of my favorite interviews from Friday while I show the Silk Spectre just how big Dr. Chicago can really grow. Keep your internet on firstshowing.net for more Bob $tencil and more Comic Con!

Back on Thursday at Comic-Con, I finally got to see a first look at James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin, a movie I've been following for the longest time. In the film, Rain stars as Raizo, one of the deadliest ninja assassins in the world, who looks to avenge the death of his friend by betraying the clan that trained him. Not only is Rain's involvement quite exciting, but McTeigue's involvement, the same guy who directed V for Vendetta, is really what has me genuinely very excited for this. Not only did I catch up with McTeigue after the panel, but the presentation of footage was phenomenal. I really had no clue what to expect and finally wanted to see some footage and damn it looked awesome. This is every ninja fan's ultimate wet dream - an amazing assassin revenge movie complete with more ninjas that you could ever imagine.

The trailer for Ninja Assassin was truly breathtaking, in an intense and exciting sense, and also was unfortunately something that most will never get to see in advance of watching the actual movie. James McTeigue describes what I saw best: a combination of anime and horror with ninjas, lots and lots of ninjas. This looks like the greatest mainstream ninja movie that anyone might ever see. If you're a fan of ninjas, even in the slightest, then you're going to instantly be a fanatic of this. It starts out with a boy growing up in a small village learning the ways of ninjas and eventually leads to his revenge later on. There wasn't much of a story (or any dialogue) in the trailer, but that didn't matter – the action kicked ass.

This also looked incredibly R rated. Every time someone would smoothly slice a blade across someone else, the blood flowed freely. This where the horror element came into play, because it was incredibly bloody but not exactly in a horrific sense – stylized instead. McTeigue is a filmmaker who definitely attempts to push the limits and he did it with V for Vendetta and he's about to do it again with Ninja Assassin. There was not just one ninja – there were multiples, flying in from everywhere, slicing up people left and right. There were scenes in the middle of a road where ninjas were leaping over cars, scenes with ninjas hiding in the roof waiting to attack a SWAT team, and even one of the best fight scenes in a bathroom I've ever seen!

If you take a look at the photo at the top, you'll notice Rain looks slightly red. That is indeed because he's covered entirely in blood. In a separate scene, Rain fights a guy in the bathroom and starts stabbing him with a very short blade in the neck and other important nerve points, so the blood is gushing out everywhere. Soon enough the entire bathroom, and Rain, were covered in blood yet the fighting continued. And at the end of the trailer, Rain bashes the guy's head into a urinal as a finisher. This isn't your mom and pop's violence either, this is hardcore. You can feel every last slice and every last hit – and it's as painful as hell! It's not cartoony, it's not cheesy, it's unrelenting violent ninja action at its finest.

Before I wrapped up the evening, I caught up briefly with McTeigue himself. Although he's personally inspired by Ninja Scroll, this was just something that came from their own imagination. "We've been talking about ninja movies for a long time," McTeigue recalled. In terms of the action and extreme violence, McTeigue stats that "if you're going to make a ninja movie, you've got to go there, and we went there." At one point, it was rumored that Ninja Assassin was a live-action remake of the Ninja Scroll anime, but that ended up being fake. Instead, McTeigue explains that "Ninja Scroll has a lot of cool set pieces, a lot of cool action pieces." He adds that he "was interested in making a cross between an anime, horror film, and also a bit of film noir." What I saw was exactly that and kicked ass!

Although this movie certainly won't be for everyone, I hope a lot of people still at least give it a chance. Ninja Assassin might just be the first awesome ninja movie we'll see and thus it's something no one should miss. I was expecting the footage to kick ass and it did - and that's actually quite rare at Comic-Con. Ninja Assassin is tentatively set for release on January 16th, 2009 from Warner Brothers so stay tuned!

After an exciting presentation in Hall H earlier in the day on Watchmen, Lionsgate is following up this afternoon with an exciting presentation on Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's The Spirit. In attendance today: Frank Miller himself, producer Deborah Del Prete, and stars Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, and Eva Mendes. I'm excited to follow this panel live because I'm wondering whether it will be any good and hopefully they'll bring some new footage that will change my mind. We've all seen the latest weird trailer and it didn't look bad, but it also didn't really look good. Hopefully Frank Miller will bring us a fantastic adaptation of one of the most beloved comics in history. Its got a strong cast, but is that enough? Follow our live coverage of The Spirit panel below!

2:58PM - We're waiting for the panel to begin… So far it's 15 minutes delay and there doesn't seem to be a lot of buzz. Please show us something that will change our minds Frank!

3:01PM - Frank Miller and Deborah Del Prete are introduced by an LA Times rep for the panel today. An exciting project with a lot of different subplots to it, some of them are controversial. Frank begins telling the story of how he met Will Eisner on a street in Vermont. At the time he thought Will Eisner was the new hot guy in comics circa 1973. He opened up a copy of The Spirit and "fell inside." Years passed and he finally got to meet Will and was thrilled. Will was the friendliest, sweetest guy in the world. Explain a similar story with Zack Snyder saying that if he didn't take on the project when it was offered to him something bad would happen to it. He goes on explaining that it was his producer (Del Prete) that kept him on his toes and hammered him through the script and the development of the project.

3:06PM - Every day they talked on set about what Will would want or would Will like it? They wanted to have the voice of the artist only on the screen and took on Frank Miller because they wanted his vision.

3:10PM - Some people are considered about putting Denny Colt into Sin City… But maybe it's time to show a trailer before continuing on any further discussion! Frank introduces the "theatrical trailer" which isn't a special clip, just a regular full trailer. It was the same trailer we launched last week - if you want to watch it yourself!

3:14PM - Frank talks about how in Eisner's comic, The Octopus was only identified by his gloves. And he wanted to find some who could scare the crap out of everybody and be masculine and frightening enough to "fill those gloves" and make you be willing to look past of gloves and into the heart of darkness. And thus he introduces Samuel Jackson to the stage!

3:16PM - Jackson talks about how it was a "real honor" to put flesh and bones to someone who was only hands in Eisner's comic. Frank allowed him to explore and create and picture him that turned out to be quite fascinating for all of them, enough to even surprise Frank Miller.

3:17PM - Jackson explains that they "made up" guns… The meanest, nastiest hand guns you'll ever see in your life. And Sam was saying "where's the next one?" And Frank was saying "oh shit!" So they went on and put things together themselves. And they were putting guns on top of another and wired them up like that. It was every gun in the place and when Jackson was holding them, he "looked like a Transformer robot." He even needed wires on the guns above him to hold him up because he is "not that strong." Big frickin' guns!

3:20PM - Asking Jackson about Frank Miller as a director and not a graphic novelist. Frank loved to experiment and try various suggestions with camera placement that Jackson would make. Jackson was familiar with the Spirit comics before he became involved, but Frank gave him all of them later on.

3:22PM - Favorite action figure? Jackson says Mace Windu becomes he comes in so many different types. And he also just got some cool Afro Samurai action figures. Everyone had an action figure on Jurassic Park besides him and Wayne Knight and that was the first movie he had. He has a lot of action figures collected in his office all over everything.

3:34PM - Jackson always envision the Octopus as a guy who wanted to be so much more and tried things and was buried in the morgue - he was waiting for his opportunity to explode as the new King Pin. So he got rid of all of those people and finally found the right thing to make him the indestructible being that he wanted to be. He lost his mind and in the midst of losing it, he found something different every day that made him larger than life every time he woke up. Everything revolves around him - he is the center of the universe. The most bizarre thing they came up with was the "black Nazi" uniform.

3:25PM - Unfortunately Eva Mendes won't be here because she's filming Bad Lieutenant. Producer talking about all of the femme fatales and explaining their characters. Laureli is the "spirit of The Spirit" and is embodied by Jamie King, who is here to see everyone and talk about the movie!

3:29PM - Jamie explains her character: Frank described her as the "angel of death." She is a mystery character sort of woven throughout the film and goes through extreme love and extreme anger. Every time The Spirit gets knocked out, she's beckoning him to come to her. The Spirit is a noble hero and "look what he's willing to give up" as Frank points at Jamie.

Frank taught Jamie how liberating green screen is because they don't have to stop and reset everything. It's like going back to a child like bringing your imagination out. It also allows them to get the cast they want because they can bring who they want and shoot quickly. They never know what it'll look like and then when they do it's stunning. It's a whole new revolution of what's going to happen - they're the on the verge of new technology.

3:32PM - Frank introduces a clip. Sand Seref is a lover of jewerly. And in this she wears a very, very tight swimsuit because she has to go swimming all the time. Filming underwater is a "fucking nightmare" as Frank Miller explains but nothing replaces the movement of the hair. They found a "phantom camera" that was able to shoot "slower than death" and Eva was one of the first to use it. All of these scenes were shot dry and she was instructed to act like "the Flash." Apparently the scene is Eva under the water in a wet suit…

3:37PM - Quite unimpressive clip of Eva swimming through the water after being attacked by the Octopus. It looked really quite bad, like a cut scene from a video game, even moreso than Speed Racer. It looked too smooth and glossy, not styled enough (I think?). Overall, I was unimpressed, but alas, maybe it's not finish and I'll wait to see more footage later on.

3:38PM - Frank introduces Gabriel Macht, who plays The Spirit, and he arrives on stage to a great round of applause.

3:40PM - Macht talks about The Spirit - he's got a lot of different colors: he can laugh at himself, he can be very deadly, especially when beating the shit out of Sam Jackson, he loves women… Every women he meets he just falls in love with. He's a young detective and gets shot in the line of duty and 10 hours later he awakes into this new thing and he sees he can do certain things that other cops can't do. So he makes a deal with the commissioner to be the eyes and ears of the city. And by doing this he has an extra level of pheramone attraction. He was just a joy to play and it was an amazing opportunity!

3:42PM - Macht explains that it was a "dream come true" to play this role with all the women. Frank introduces another clip of sort, saying that we get to see a clip with Spirit with the real love of his life - Ellen.

3:44PM - Another new clip with Ellen and Spirit talking. It has a very classic, noir vibe to it, with the jazzy music and quirky scenes. I love the feeling here, although the last clip we saw really wasn't impressive. Even if the action in this movie isn't great, at least it will be full of lots of steamy romance and that will count for a lot. Especially because it has such a fantastic cast of hotties!

3:45PM - The Octopus has built a bunch of clones as henchman and so Louis Labarti (?) will feel every insult and death because they didn't want to have a bunch of stuntmen grunt when they're thrown against a wall. There's nothing campy about the movie - it's really organic humor.

Frank is asked "what would Will say" if he was here and just saw what we were shown. Frank says he probably would've said "good job" and explained that the scalpel she threw at the end would've bent and she would've needed to use it for surgery later (a joke). Macht explains that they wouldn't move on unless they thought Will would get it.

3:49PM - It's not a period movie, but they've got things from the 50's as well as cell phones and so on. Frank has also brought some of his original and his own imagination to this as well on top of adapting from Eisner's work. Frank introduces one more clip… Frank says he wants to show us what Jackson and Macht did on a very filthy and wet set with a bunch of props. Frank drew this entire scene himself and everything in this clip came from Frank's own imagining and own storyboards. "When titans clash…"

3:53PM - "Toilets are always funny." Fight scene between Spirit and Octopus - seemed very goofy and cheesy. Although she said it's not campy, this scene was very campy. A lot of odd and quirky comedy where they each grabbed various tools like a crowbar and cinder block and fought each other. The last bit was a toilet that Octopus slapped onto Spirit and it stuck on him so he looked like a toilet. And that's why toilets are always funny… or are they?

3:54PM - That's the end of this panel and thanks all around. Time to wrap up The Spirit! Completely unimpressed is not even the beginning - this was really not that amazing. Looked like it had very cartoony violence and yet very violent in a sense. Odd, but not amazing. Nice try Frank Miller, but not amazing.

This is easily the most highly anticipated panel of all of Comic-Con this year! After Zack Snyder debuted the first amazing footage from 300 at Comic-Con back in 2006, he's back again this year with his adaptation of one of comic's most beloved and legendary works - Watchmen! Snyder will be joined by Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson today and we can only imagine what kind of goodies they've brought to share with all of us. New poster? Complete scenes? An extended trailer? After watching the first trailer countless times in front of The Dark Knight, this has quickly become the movie I'm most looking forward to and I'm incredibly excited to see what Snyder has cooked up. Stay tuned and follow our live coverage below as it unfolds!

11:40AM - Currently sitting and waiting in Hall H for the panel to start at 11:55AM. The auditorium is entirely full…

11:52AM - The screens just showed a panel that allowed people to enter into a contest to win a custom Watchmen Xbox 360. The audience cheered, texting ensued, and the quietness resumed…

11:57AM - Nothing yet… still waiting… anticipation is high… everyone is anxious!

11:58AM - Directing of Programming for Comic-Con takes the stage.. time to begin!!

12:01PM - Entertainment Weekly rep takes the stage to introduce Watchmen. Two years ago Zack came to Comic-Con to show footage from 300, today he's here to show us footage from a comic that has often been called unfilmmable. Everyone in the cast makes their debut on stage: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson, Dave Gibbons, and Zack Snyder.

12:05PM - Asks Zack Snyder to recap "how we got here." Watchmen has been knocking around Hollywood for a while, a bunch of directors have been attached. He was working in post-production on 300 and Warner Brothers called and asked him if he would be interested. He said "yea… it seems like a crazy idea, but…" Once they asked him, he felt responsible and even if he said no, someone else would've made it and if it didn't turn out, it would've still been his fault, so he thought why not make it his fault anyway. Zack says the cast has been awesome in helping him understand the characters. All discussion has been about what is consistent with the book and so on. In that respect, they've been a "super great" cast.

Zack explains that when people heard there was a teaser they thought it would just be the title and the date, but that they actually decided to put some shots together for what we saw in front of The Dark Knight. That's the history up until what "he's going to show us."

12:11PM - Asking Dave Gibbons what is what like to see it become real. He said it felt like a dream and he was expecting to be pinched and would wake up. What really made it real was to stand inside of the Owl Ship and smell the Comedian's cigar and have him slap Gibbons on the back and proudly show him one of his guns - was just amazing. "It was incredible to actually tangibly touch it." It was the "every day things" that impressed him. Gibbons said that he plastered his trademark letter "G" up all over the place and he feels like it now has his signature "all over the place" in it.

Dave wishes that Alan Moore could feel the same experience he's having cause he's having a really great experience so far…

12:14PM - Zack Snyder sets up the shot we're about to see. Explains that he was going to bring the original trailer and show it again but thought that most of us have seen The Dark Knight already… So it's some of the shots from the trailer extended to show more of the non-PG aspect of the movie. He just wanted to put a couple of shots together to say "this is how we're doing it."

12:20PM - Absolutely stunning extended trailer. Just beautiful, just amazing. Zack continues on talking about how he thought that this would be relevant to today. In the end it asks a lot of moral questions and you've got to answer those yourself and he thinks "that's what Watchmen is."

12:21PM - Asking a question to Billy Crudup about filming completely nude in the blue. Billy making a joke about technically playing the character and how he has to act as that guy. He explains his two big obstacles and said he "did the best he could." Time to go to the audience for Q&A…

12:22PM - Question: What was it like to bring Rorshach to life? Haley: It was a blast, it was challenging, it was mind-numbing. There's a lot to this character. I've studied the script, I've studied the book and had long conversations with Zack about the character and his multiplicity. I've learned a lot from you about who Rorshach is from reading the internet and blogs and got into the character when he finally got on the outfit.

12:24PM - Question: Who is Zack Snyder's favorite Watchmen character? Snyder: "I like them all for different reasons" and the audience boos. "Everyone likes Rorshach the best so… that rules him out. Everyone else likes The Comedian because he is kind of like a badass and is morally… you know! So t
