20 years ago it all began. 20 years later and we're still here. Today, FirstShowing.net celebrates its 20th Anniversary on the web! Huzzah! June 3rd, 2026 is specifically the exact 20th anniversary of the launch of this movie blog website. The very first post was published on June 3rd, 2006 - it was a quick 3 sentence post about tickets being on sale for the new Superman Returns and Cars movies opening in theaters that summer. FirstShowing originally launched as a movie blog to talk about camping out right outside a movie theater in Colorado for the opening of Superman Returns (here's the old post about that event). All these years later, while I'm no longer camping out for movies (is anyone still doing this??), I'm still obsessed with them and always on the watch. So much has changed over these last 20 years – Hollywood has gone through some rough times, the internet is a whole different place. But what hasn't changed is my passion for cinema, my love of the movie-going experience, and my excitement for every upcoming release (especially sci-fi) and new project in the works. Winners of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival awards, including the coveted Palme d'Or, were revealed at a glamorous ceremony in Cannes, France this weekend. The awards this year were again entirely surprising and a bit strange, with many films both loved and hated winning awards and the jury picking a few that no one thought would get much. The top prize Palme d'Or went to Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu and his latest film titled Fjord set in Norway. This is actually Mungiu's second Palme d'Or in Cannes history - he won once before for his abortion film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007 (19 years ago). This win has caused quite a stir among critics - many love the film, while many others dislike it, and there's a big debate about what it means + what Mungiu is saying (and if that's good or bad). Other major winners include the Russian film Minotaur getting the Grand Prix second place (instead of the Palme), Lukas Dhont's Coward getting Best Actor for both of its lead actors, and Hamaguchi's All of a Sudden getting Best Actress for both of its lead actresses (who are both phenomenal in this film). Whether or not the winners are what you would pick if you were on the jury, these wins are causing quite the commotion and hopefully this will bring more attention to international cinema. This is for all the dog lovers out there! And cinema lovers, too. Launching at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival is a new edition of a cinema 'zine called Cannes Dogs (photos below). If you're in town locally at the film festival in France this May, you can pick up a copy from the creator himself - Kyle Greenberg. The concept of Cannes Dogs is both a sketchbook and 'zine featuring images of dogs (seen in films and seen around the festival) as well as a "roaming, dog-friendly screening & event series." They recently hosted an event with a special dog-friendly screening in Los Angeles of the 2003 cult-classic Quigely, and will also host a screening in June in London coming up (more info here). In addition to a presence + a little soirée in Cannes during the festival. The first edition of the 'zine launched last year after a trip to Cannes and a visit to the Palm Dog awards that gives out prizes to animals in films. As a lifelong dog lover, who always takes photos of dogs in Cannes year after year, I can't help featuring this 'zine and talking about how fun the dog sketches are. Every year, cinephiles wake up early for the announcement from France of the films playing at the Cannes Film Festival. For the 79th Cannes Film Festival taking place this May, they have revealed an intriguing selection of very diverse international films, featuring new works from well-established filmmakers (they love them), as well as some newcomers getting their chance to shine on the Croisette. Cannes is continuing in its usual spot in mid-May, running from May 12th to 23rd, kicking things off a French film on opening night about a romance in the 1920s (called The Electric Kiss). Just over a month to go until the fest begins on the Mediterranean coast. The selection last year included many major highlights of 2025 cinema - such as Eddington, The Mastermind, Resurrection, Sirat, Sentimental Value, Exit 8, and many others. This year I'm looking forward to diving into any real surprises. Along with fresh films from fave filmmakers like Lukas Dhont (of Girl, Close), Léa Mysius (Ava, The Five Devils), Na Hong-jin (The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, The Wailing), Asghar Farhadi (A Separation, The Salesman). The 98th Academy Awards are finally upon us and it's time to watch the show and discover the winners of the most prestigious award in Hollywood. The Oscars have played out over a long winter, finally wrapping up this year's awards season in mid March – which feels a bit too much of a wait. Now it's time to hand out all the golden statues. Awards will be marked below in the list alongside noms. There are ten Best Picture options from 2025, including Sinners and Brazil's The Secret Agent and One Battle After Another and the wonderful Train Dreams. As a huge fan, I'm ready for PTA's masterpiece One Battle After Another to collect most awards. But who is winning the acting prizes? DiCaprio or Chalamet? After months of anticipation and buzz, we're ready to find out what The Academy members have chosen. Every nominated movie is a worthy contender - including Sentimental Value and F1 and Little Amelie and Frankenstein and so many others. Now it's time to discover who is taking home Oscars, and who isn't, at the annual Academy Awards. As we inch closer to the Academy Awards ceremony (on March 15th in a few weeks), the next major set of winners have been announced. The 32nd annual SAG Awards (or Screen Actors Guild Awards) honor the finest performances from 2025, as chosen by other actors which means this is one of the most definitive lists of the very best of the year. They've changed their name and now it's known as The Actors Awards instead of SAG Awards. Actors know their profession better than anyone and are very particular about good performances. So who won this year? Michael B. Jordan from Sinners and Jessie Buckley from Hamnet took home the two top prizes, then Sinners surprised everyone by winning for Outstanding Ensemble Cast. All of this is a surprise because many journalists expected One Battle After Another to win along with Timothée Chalamet and Rose Byrne as well. The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring all of the indie films which deserve honor and recognition - celebrating their 41st year. The 2026 winners of the Spirit Awards were announced Sunday evening - switching things up taking place a whole month before the Oscars (in the past it's just the day before). The big winner this year is the beloved favorite Train Dreams, which took him 3 top prizes just like Anora last year. The film won Best Feature, Best Director, and the very deserving Best Cinematography prize. And more awards went to other important indie hits like Sorry, Baby, The Secret Agent, The Plague, Lurker, and Rose Byrne winning for her incredible performance in the underseen If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. The Best Documentary prize went to the excellent The Perfect Neighbor (which is now on Netflix and it's also a must watch). The other nominations from 2025 included many smaller indie films most cinephiles have been talking about, including: Twinless, Peter Hujar's Day, Lucky Lu, One of Them Days, Eephus, Splitsville, and others. This weekend, the winners of the 78th Annual DGA Awards were announced at an upbeat celebration in Los Angeles. The 2025 awards season shuffles onward heading towards the finale with these director prizes, ending with the Academy Awards airing in March. This year it's One Battle After Another director Paul Thomas Anderson (loving known as PTA) dominating the awards season - taking home the top DGA prize for his beloved film starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Chase Infiniti. Along with The Plague director Charlie Polinger winning for Best First Feature. A superb film about bullies & being yourself – highly recommend it. I also totally love OBAA, so I couldn't be happier. In addition, Ukraine doc 2000 Meters to Andriivka (directed by Mstyslav Chernov) won the prize for Best Documentary; Stephen Chbosky won for directing the Netflix movie Nonnas; and prizes went to Amanda Marsalis for an episode of "The Pitt", and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg for an episode of "The Studio", in the TV categories. The Directors Guild Awards are one of the premiere prizes in Hollywood, honoring "Outstanding Directorial Achievement" in multiple categories including TV and commercials. The official awards for the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, held in Utah every January, were announced this morning at a ceremony held in person in Utah. This always marks the end of the fest, with a few days of screenings left. The festival wraps this week with at-home viewings in addition to all the in-person events. This year's line-up featured a grand total of 90 feature films, with a handful of top notch films but not as many as the years before. The main winners for 2026 include Josephine, taking home Grand Jury Prize; along with the polar bear film Nuisance Bear winning Grand Jury Prize for Documentary. The Audience Awards went to Josephine again + (the doc) American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez. I have to say - these Sundance winners are finally right on point this year. All the best films have been given some prize, especially the stand outs like Josephine and Everybody To Kenmure Street and To Hold a Mountain and many others. 98th Academy Awards Nominations Announced

The complete list of nominees for the 98th Academy Awards, the most prestigious award in Hollywood, have been announced today (from Oscars.org). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees via live broadcast. The nominations from 2025 are, as expected, an exciting and confident collection of most of the best movies of the year. What a vibrant set of nominees! Ryan Coogler's Sinners set a new record with a grand total of 16 nominations this year, topping La La Land and Titanic (which had 14). It looks like The Academy also fell hard for Sentimental Value, giving it a grand total of 9 nominations including Best Director. And the wonderful Train Dreams also ended up with plenty, but sadly they cut out The Testament of Ann Lee entirely with nothing. The Academy chose a total of ten Best Picture nominees from 2025, including: Bugonia, F1, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Sinners, Train Dreams, and of course One Battle After Another (also my #1 of the year). Sundance revealed their 2026 selection of official feature films debuting in January, featuring 90 films playing across 11 main categories (including their usual four Competition categories), including fascinating documentaries, unique comedies, thought-provoking dramas, and more. The 2026 festival is taking place as an online virtual fest and in-person festival returning to snowy Park City, UT - for their final year in the town before moving to Boulder, Colorado in 2027. Sundance is still one of the greatest indie fests in the world, and this will be our 20th year in a row returning to watch all the films. It's official! Universal is debuting the special 6-minute prologue for Christopher Nolan's exciting next movie The Odyssey in theaters this month. It is a holiday tradition from cinema mastermind Chris Nolan. He's been debuting the first look prologue for his next movie in December before the release next year ever since The Dark Knight - with 6 minutes screening in front of I Am Legend back in 2007. The Odyssey, his epic cinematic adaptation of the ancient Greek story by Homer, is set for release in July 2026 next summer. Variety has confirmed and officially announced that the "nearly six minute" prologue featuring footage from The Odyssey will begin screening this week - then show regularly in front of IMAX screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash. It is technically an IMAX prologue as The Odyssey is the first movie ever to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras on IMAX film stock. There will also be a brand new teaser trailer releasing soon to build the hype (online) as the countdown continues until next July. I cannot wait to see this! I've been watching every new Nolan movie prologue in theaters since 2007 and I won't miss this one either. Major news in the movie business announced today. Warner Bros has accepted an offer from Netflix to be sold to the streaming service tech company. Even though this is shaking up the industry and everyone is writing "end times" diatribes, we don't really know anything yet. The ink has barely begun to dry. And, well, technically the US government could come in and stop the deal before it finalizes. Who knows what will happen? Netflix has officially announced the news via a press release this morning. "Today's announcement combines two of the greatest storytelling companies in the world to bring to even more people the entertainment they love to watch the most," states David Zaslav, Pres. & CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery. "For more than a century, Warner Bros has thrilled audiences, captured the world's attention, and shaped our culture. By coming together with Netflix, we will ensure people everywhere will continue to enjoy the world's most resonant stories for generations to come." What worries most of us - will Netflix allow them to keep releasing films in theaters, and will they allow them to keep making movies meant for theaters: shot on film, projected on film (like both Sinners and One Battle After Another this year)? More of your favorite Studio Ghibli movies are coming to IMAX screens next year! Deadline has announced the exciting news that animation distributor GKids is partnering with both IMAX and Studio Ghibli to re-release a few pristine, brand new 4K restorations of Studio Ghibli classics in IMAX theaters starting in 2026. They've already been re-releasing the Ghibli movies for years under the "Ghibli Fest" banner which makes me happy because all 20+ of their movies deserve to be appreciated year-after-year. Earlier in 2025 they already released Hayao Miyazaki's classic Princess Mononoke on IMAX screens (watch the trailer) the first experiment in this 4K restoration + IMAX re-release opportunity (along with The Boy and the Heron in 2023). He's off on a road tour! The best-in-the-biz indie distributor Neon has just announced that they're taking award-winning Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi on a tour around the US for Q&As for his new film titled It Was Just an Accident (watch the trailer) - which already began its run in limited theaters in October. Check your local listings. Most cinephiles already know that Panahi won the coveted Palme d'Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for this film, which is about a group of Iranian people seeking revenge on a man they believe is their torturer from the time they were kept in prison by Iran's authoritarian regime. It's "a deeply felt moral thriller, where high stakes tension combines with unexpected flurries of humor and thoughtful, sometimes devastating questions regarding persecution & revenge." Neon has revealed that Panahi will tour with It Was Just an Accident to 7 cities in late November: mainly in NY, CA, WA, MA, IL. He will also make "a new short film to document his journey" while on the road. Big news for film geeks! Letterboxd has announced something brand new! The world famous movie diary tracking site has revealed that they will soon be launching a video rental / streaming service called simply the "Letterboxd Video Store". Described as "our own curated rental spot", the Letterboxd Video Store is a curated rental service to watch new films and old films without having to head elsewhere and find them on another platform. They explain: "This isn't a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join the conversation with our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists." We've been huge fans of Letterboxd for a decade or more – and even once added their review widget at the bottom of our reviews (alas it doesn't work anymore). I update my account daily with whatever I've seen, writing my thoughts, as well as following lists & other reviews. It's one of the best movie websites out there right now. I'm glad they're shaking things up with something like this – it sounds like a clever way to get people to watch all the films they find and read about on Letterboxd. Neon has quietly revealed a sneaky viral website for the horror thriller film titled Shelby Oaks, made by former YouTube critic turned filmmaker Chris Stuckmann as his feature directorial debut. The film premiered at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival last year, and also played at FrightFest – opening in theaters in early October coming up (watch the trailer). Shelby Oaks follows a woman's desperate search for her long-lost sister falls into obsession upon realizing that the imaginary demon from their childhood may have been real. As Mia uncovers new & disturbing leads related to Riley’s disappearance, she uncovers evidence of a hidden supernatural evil dating all the way back to her and Riley's childhood. This stars Michael Beach, Keith David, Sarah Durn, Brendan Sexton III, Camille Sullivan. This viral website is eerie and strangely empty and doesn't contain anything (for now) aside from a one-minute video featuring various clips of security footage. It's a reminder that perhaps hidden somewhere in this footage might be more clues as to what happened to Riley Brennan and where she went/is now. From his speech accepting his Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 2002. Next January, it will be my 20th year at the Sundance Film Festival. I owe so much of my life and my career to Robert Redford and all that he has done for cinema. Which is why I am taking the time to write this tribute to him, to remember him now and keep remembering him for years to come. The sad news is that remarkable American actor / filmmaker / storyteller Robert Redford has died at age 89. Winner of one Academy Award (in 1981 for directing Ordinary People), the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the SAG Life Achievement Award, the founder of the Sundance Film Festival, and a genuine lover of the magic of movies & the power of storytelling. He was one of the best to ever work in movies, changing the industry in so many major ways. Redford passed away on September 16th at his home at Sundance in the Utah mountains — "the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved."
