and that's exactly why I didn't talk too much about it because I don't know all of the facts lol...either way I just hope that something can be worked out so that sport fishermen, commercial fishermen and charter boat captains can all enjoy the ocean and make a living, and in turn still maintain a sustainable ocean so that future generations can enjoy it (far cry from reality but wishful thinking). My wife and I are planning to have children soon and it would kill me if my children couldn't share in all of the joys I have had through out my years fishing. I love the open forum here and everyone who has responded has informed me about stuff I didn't know about til recently...cheers guys...tight lines

Brian,

"I wish everybody would do a little more research on their own before posting, either which way."

I could not have said it better myself, and that ideal applies to so many things right now.

Also, have you got any family in Chicago? Just curious if we're related.

In response to Bryan, the Japanese fisherman you are worried about are not allowed to fish within our economic exclusion zone (EEZ) which extends out from the US for 200 miles. It’s a little closer off the most southern part of FL but I still don’t think your uncles are running that far off shore unless they are going into Cuban waters.

I’m not trying to start a fight but it’s a common misconception that used to be based on fact but was mostly fixed in the mid 70’s with the passing of the Magnusson Stevens Act which excluded foreign fleets from our EEZ.

If there really are foreign commercial vessels in the EEZ you should contact the Coast Guard and they will literally show up in armed vessels. It’s happens from time to time up here on the US/Canada border (on both sides).

I agree that we need stricter laws and conservation acts greatly, and agree that we have been raiding the oceans for a long time. I just wish communities of the world would get together and act more on commercial aspects as opposed to the sporting aspects. Many states have regulated what they believe to be sustainable limits on fish, but when it comes to international waters the laws vanish. With commercial fishing taking species to the brink maybe we should look at expanding our borders on the ocean (wishful thinking) and building more artificial reefs to bring in and sustain the species...
All in all I loved the article (because you explained it in a non-threatening and cleared up a lot of info) and while politics in our country now is a touchy subject I agree with your platform even though we (sport fishermen) are feeling this "pinch". Love the site and keep up the good work, if either one of you make it down to South Carolina shoot me an email, I know a lot of areas around here to show y'all a good time on and off the water...Cheers guys!

No, Obama is not banning fishing. That is just a headline grabber. The concern is about the unintended consequences of any such regulation if the concerns of sport fishermen are not heard by policy makers.

What is so funny about the uproar this ESPN article has caused on every fishing forum is that the fight over this proposed regulation has been going on for sometime.

Inland water anglers have not had much concern because more than likely it will not effect us. However, great lakes anglers and saltwater anglers most certainly will be effected if implemented. There is a reason why most of the major sport fishing groups are involved in this process. Even Shimano has had lobbyists on the job. Bassmaster Magazine had an editorial about this a couple months back as well.
