Spring Chinook Fishery Will Be Open This Weekend on Lower Columbia

OLYMPIA - Sport fishing for spring chinook salmon will reopen this Saturday and Sunday (May 26-27) on the lower Columbia River below Bonneville Dam.

Fishery managers from Washington and Oregon agreed to reopen the fishery for those two days to boat and bank anglers from Buoy 10 to Beacon Rock. Bank anglers will also be allowed to fish from Beacon Rock upriver to the deadline at Bonneville Dam.

CAL DFG Sues Army Corps to Protect Fish and Wildlife Around Levees

Yesterday, the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) sued the United States Army Corps of Engineers (Corps).

DFG claimed in its lawsuit that the Corps failed to comply with the federal Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and federal Administrative Procedure Act when it adopted a national policy requiring the removal of virtually all trees and shrubs on federal levees. The Corps developed its national levee vegetation removal policy in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Cherry Creek State Park's Swim Beach Opens to Swimming

AURORA, Colo. - Cherry Creek State Park's swim beach will open to swimming on Friday, May 25 at 8 a.m. The swim beach will be open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., through Labor Day. All vehicles entering the park must have a parks pass, but there is no additional charge to use the swim beach.

MDWFP Investigates Fish Kill at Sardis Reservoir

JACKSON - Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) biologists recently responded to fish kill reports at Sardis Lake. Several shoreline areas were examined around the lake. The kill was over 97% white bass. An estimated 73,510 white bass died. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) was alerted by MDWFP.

Winooski River Basin Water Quality Management Plan Completed

Essex Junction, Vt. - Today, the Agency of Natural Resources announced the approval of the Winooski River Basin (Basin 8) water quality management plan. This plan reflects years of work in the Winooski River Basin to evaluate the health of the basin. Secretary Markowitz said, "I am proud of the work done by our basin planner Karen Bates. Her excellent work with the communities in the Winooski River Basin has resulted in a plan that will allow Vermont to protect and improve the water quality in the area for years to come."

$10,000 Diamond Jim On The Loose

Annapolis, Md. - The hunt is on! The Diamond Jim component of the 2012 Maryland Fishing Challenge kicked off Thursday when Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) biologists and some eager young anglers caught, tagged and released dozens of striped bass into the Chesapeake Bay. One of today's tagged fish is the official Diamond Jim worth $10,000 to the angler who catches it before midnight on June 30. The other tagged rockfish will be known as imposters worth at least $500 each if caught and registered before September 3, 2012.
