From among the huge number of fitness, diet and exercise related applications that are offered for your iPhone or iPod touch, many may be no good at all. But there are some that are well worth considering:

The Lose It! App. This is a calorie tracking tool and arguably one of the most successful and popular of their health apps. Feed in what you eat and the software tracks the nutritional information of what you ate based on the supermarket and other samples that are included in their database. Even restaurant food is covered!

The WebMD App: This is a reference tool that you can access even offline and can offer information about a host of health related issues from the common cold to CPR.

It is educational and extremely useful but you have to guard against becoming an armchair physicians and self medication based on half baked knowledge!

The iTreadmill App: Many of us prefer the outdoors to stationary walking indoors, however would enjoy having the information that a treadmill provides.

This is a treadmill like software that counts steps, tracks speed and the approx number of calories burnt.

The iFitness App: With 230 exercises in its database as well as videos to explain them, this one is like your own personal trainer.

The Pocket First Aid and CPR App: This one became popular after the Haiti earthquake, and it really is something that may count in an emergency.

Children love to play and move around. It is normal to see them running after each other and doing other activities that requires too much action.

As a parent, you have to make sure your kids stay strong and healthy especially when they are always on the go.

We all know that kids love to eat junk foods, sweets, carbonated drinks, and other stuffs which we consider too unhealthy for their age.

If you want to ensure that your child benefits a lot from the food he/she eats, you have to start giving healthy snacks for kids.

Youngsters are so hyperactive that they easily burn the food they eat. Every now and then, they will ask for something to eat especially after playing or when they arrive from school.

You have to prepare healthy snacks for kids to restore the energies they have lost. Do not give them food with empty calories or those which contain too much fat.

Instead, give them something healthy to eat especially those which can provide them the nutrients they need for their age.

Many children look forward to eating their snacks since they know that you will often prepare them foods they love to eat. Now you can surprise your active child with something healthy yet special with these seven healthy snacks for kids.

1. Fresh fruits

Stock your refrigerator with healthy snacks for kids like fresh fruits. Kids can’t resist eating juicy and succulent fruits like apples, pears, oranges, grapes, and berries. Make it a habit to include in their lunch box a selection of their favorite fruits which they can munch on during recess.

2. Cookies

Do you have a cookie jar at home? Bake homemade cookies which are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Spice up your regular cookies by adding nuts, oats, fruit jams or jellies, and many more. You can even bake these healthy snacks for kids with your child.

3. Dried fruits

If fresh fruits are not available, you can always buy dried fruits. Buy a box of prunes or raisins which are sweet like candies and very healthy at the same time. These healthy snacks for kids are rich in antioxidants which can naturally clean your child’s body.

4. Nuts

Nuts like peanuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, macadamia, and many more are considered healthy snacks for kids. They contain natural oils, monounsaturated fats, and energy boosters ideal for your active youngster. They are also a better alternative to chips and popcorn when they want something to munch on while they are watching a movie or their favorite cartoon.

5. Energy bars

There are different kinds of energy bars available in leading supermarkets. These healthy snacks for kids come with varying ingredients.

Look for one that contains dried fruits, nuts, oats, and wheat. Refrain from feeding your kids with artificially sweetened bars by buying one, made of honey or glucose.

6. Milk

Just because your child is old enough doesn’t mean he/she has to stop drinking milk. Healthy snacks for kids call for a glass of milk.

Always have a carton of your child’s favorite milk in your refrigerator so that he/she will no longer have to look for soda to drink. Milk is rich in calcium which can make your child’s bones grow strong and healthy.

7. Sandwich

Sandwiches are still the most preferred healthy snacks for kids. Use whole wheat bread and fill with cheese. You can also add vegetables like lettuce and onions or fruits like tomatoes and pineapples. Add chicken strips and your child will be more than happy to eat your sandwich.

Olympic medalist Crissy Perham is famous for the dogged determination and the undying perseverance that won her, her medals.

However, even now years later, after she settled down to life as a coach she has certain mantras that she lives her life by and which she hopes she is able to inculcate in her students as well; lessons that are invaluable in sport and perhaps for success in any sphere of life:

1.	Find something you are passionate about. She advises those who find her to be an inspiration, to “Find an activity and goal that you love and are passionate about”. It really becomes simple after that. Because if you do find something that you love doing you can persevere with it. It does not seem like a chore and it is then easy to go on to the next step.

2.	“Work hard. Work hard. Work hard,” she says. This is an affirmation of the central fact of life, that excellence does not come easy. Perhaps it explicates the old adage; genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. This fact is illustrated by the fact that during school, Crissy was a good swimmer but not really Olympic material until such time as she really decided to go after her goals with everything that she had.

3.	“Find a mentor/coach,” she says and tries her best to be the best kind possible for her students as well.

For a person who is severely obese, it is unrealistic and dangerous to expect that they will be able to go right along with a demanding new fitness regimen.

This is because they risk injuring themselves with something that is too demanding up front and long term fitness goals may well become derailed. At some point even walking can be an effort so, start small, start slow; the following tips may help:

Chair Dancing: Sometimes when a person is very obese, even supporting their own weight may be difficult; also there is the risk of injuring the back. It therefore makes sense to start out with sitting exercises such as chair dancing.

This is basically a work out which requires the person to be seated on a chair the entire time. They are low impact exercises that, as the name suggests require you to dance while sitting. There is arm waving, foot stomping; it can be fun! This youtube video can give an idea of what chair dancing involves so one can decide if it is something that may work for a given individual or something they may enjoy.

Check this video for chair dancing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOS1DdE6DfE

Water aerobics: This is another exercise routine where the obese person does not have to support their own weight. The support and feeling of weightlessness that being in the water can give you, can help you do a lot of things that one may not be able to do on dry land as it were. Plus there is the fact that being in the water adds resistance to one’s movements so there is more effort involved and more of a workout one gets.

Walking: Yes even walking can be difficult for the really obese but by making small beginnings and making an incremental improvement each day, one can see an immediate difference in one’s abilities so that you are making at least some progress.

Besides everything else this is free; you don’t need to buy anything in terms of equipment or special gear or specific clothing. The added benefit of getting fresh air is just a bonus!

It is important to make a modest, not so ambitious beginning when one is really obese. Quite simply, anything else is likely to cause an injury that may further complicate matters. One does not want to make a start by falling down and getting hurt or straining a muscle or two or even injuring your spine.

The Pollster Gallup has now reviewed the fittest and most obese cities and urban centers in the United States. The findings of this survey were collected by way of a telephone survey conducted between December 29 and January 2 2010.

Information about the respondents’ height and weight were collected and based on this the person’s body mass index was calculated. In addition, respondents furnished information about lifestyle such as exercise, eating habits, and access to insurance.

The concept that having a safe place to exercise is related to the obesity rates was reinforced by the poll when it was found that four metro areas in Colorado found a place in the top ten.

At number 10 is Bridgeport/Stamford/Norwalk, Connecticut with 19.3% obesity; Denver/Aurora, Colorado with the same percentage of obesity

At number 9 is San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont, California with 19.2% of the population being obese

San Jose/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara, California is at number 8 with 19% obesity

At no 7 is Santa Cruz/Watsonville, California with 17.9% obesity

At no 6, Reno/Sparks, Nevada have 17.7% obesity

San Luis Obispo/Paso Robles, California at no. 5 has 17.6% obesity

Colorado Springs, Colorado is at no 4 with 17.2%

Barnstable Town, Massachusetts at no 3 has 16.9% obesity

Boulder, Colorado has 16.6% obesity and is the second fittest in the country

Fort Collins/Loveland, Colorado is the fittest with just 16% obese people

In part one, we spoke about useless exercises that not only are ineffective, but they may actually be rather dangerous in that they could cause actual injury.

We saw how exercises such as The Lat Pull down behind the head, the Military Press behind the head, the Upright Row and the prone leg press with the knees bending too much can be the cause of certain injuries. In addition, the following exercises are also not advisable:

Squats on the Smith Machine: Squatting with weights is certainly good for upping intensity of a squat, and it is of course possible to do squats on a Smith Machine, however this can get risky.

The reason is that the bar does not give and because it remains rigid, the body can inadvertently contort into positions that can increase the risk of injury. People often do not do this exercise using the correct form, and they put their feet far out in front of the body.

So it is better to not use a machine but rather use free weights when doing the squat, while being careful of using good form.

Bad form for Cardio Workouts: When we talk about good form, it isn’t only weights and resistance exercise we talk about. Cardio should also be performed using good form.

So it is important not to hunch over that exercycle or the treadmill, and not to grip the supports too hard. This can cause your spine, elbows and shoulders to jar and can spoil your alignment as well.

When doing cardio, make sure it isn’t so tough that you can barely do it. Maintain good posture, a natural body position and light grip and pay attention for a good and effective cardio workout.

‘Ab’ Exercise or ‘thigh’ exercise: Doing any kind of exercise or using any machine that promises ‘spot’ reduction is useless. The fact is that you cannot do anything to lose weight from a particular area of the body.

The weight has to be all over; otherwise exercising any one group of muscles will do nothing beyond tone and firm them. If fat still overlays them, the most exercised abs will still be invisible. So aim for all over weight loss by boosting metabolism and not ‘spot’ reduction.

Routinely wearing a weight belt: For those that have a medical condition or injury that indicates its use, or for those that are lifting very heavy weights, a weight belt may make sense.

However, don’t use it as a matter of course; this will cause the core muscles to not work as hard and slack off, consequently becoming weak.

You have to watch what you eat, take enough rest, and exercise regularly.

Sometimes, it gets so boring being under a strict diet or staying for long hours at the gym. Your best alternative is to go ballroom dancing.

Don’t you know that dancing is one of the best exercises around? Ballroom dancing, for instance, allows you to move all parts of your body. This way you stay fit and have fun at the same time.

Here are other reasons why ballroom dancing can make you healthier:

1. Burns fats naturally

If you want to lose those excess weights, ballroom dancing can help you. You have to swing; tango, and jive in ballroom dancing and these dance moves can shed off fats.

2. Improves posture

Ballroom dancing also helps improve your posture. It is not just all about movements but grace and style as well. You learn to balance yourself and stay in tune with your partner.

3. Keeps you stress-free

One way to relax those tired muscles is by ballroom dancing. You can fight stress by engaging in this wholesome activity.

Ballroom dancing is a fun way to stay strong and healthy. You can even do it together with your loved ones and friends.

It is that which gives us the inspiration to make a start; the confidence to persist. Here are some tips you can use:

Eat fewer calories, exercise more: when eating out, cut out the trimmings such as the onion rings, ask for a vinegar based dressing over a mayo dressing, the fries on the side. Choose leaner meat cuts. If you are already exercising, increase the intensity or the duration.

Count the calories to eat a little less than the particular requirement for your height and body type.

If the weight loss is slow; don’t worry. That is actually likely to be a good sign that you will be able to keep it off.

This will take courage: give away the fat clothes. This will remind you to keep to the straight and narrow: if you find that your nice new wardrobe is starting to feel a bit snug after a while this will act as a wake up call.

If you don’t enjoy the working out and the cutting back so much, don’t worry; you soon will.

Lack of exercise can lead to serious health problems like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

In order to arm yourself from these ailments, people have to exercise and go on a diet.

However, going to the gym everyday can eat up too much time while outdoor exercises such as walking and jogging take too much effort. No wonder, many people are now buying their own home gym equipment.

Having your personal gym equipment is expensive but it is more beneficial and practical in the long run. It is good to invest on gym equipment since you can use it anytime and anywhere you want.

Further, you no longer have to pay for gym membership fees and save yourself the trouble of going to the gym daily. With your own gym equipment, you are assured of sticking to your exercise regimen regardless of time and weather conditions.

Home gym equipment can be very expensive. In order to get your money’s worth; you must use it properly. When using your equipment, make sure you set it up correctly.

Adjust whatever it is that needs adjustment to fit your body, height, and capability. If needed, ask an instructor to help you start on your own gym equipment. Use smooth and precise movements.

If you want your gym equipment to last for a long time, you must take good care of it. Here are some tips you can apply:

Check your gym equipment regularly
As a responsible owner, you have to conduct a regular check-up on your gym equipment. See if there are cracks, tears, and other signs of damage on them so you can immediately repair them before they get worse. Check for loose screws and knobs and tighten them to avoid accidents.

Conduct regular maintenance

Just like how you ensure your car is in good working condition, you must do the same with your gym equipment. Oil your exercise machines regularly to avoid rust.

Clean and wipe dust off your equipment. After using, wipe sweat off the seat, bench, or handles of your machines to prevent them from getting stinky and dirty.

Store correctly

Gym equipment does not only refer to exercise machines like treadmills, exercise bikes, and rowing machines. They also refer to other equipment used when exercising like dumbbells, weights, ropes, wobble boards and many more. Store them in a cool dry place and never leave them behind after using to avoid tripping down on them.

Use wisely

If your gym equipment is run by electric power, check the wires regularly. Always unplug your machine if it is not in use to save electricity. Don’t play with your equipment or perform inappropriate exercises on them.

Observe child safety

Never allow your children to even to get near your gym equipment. Accidents can happen. Remember that kids are naturally curious they may stick their finger on your treadmill or try to lift the weights themselves. If possible, place your gym equipment in your bedroom or in any secured room in the house.
