It’s happened to most Americans. You go to the doctor, you have an emergency procedure, or maybe some tests run, and then before you know it, you get a bill you were not expecting.

While I want to rant about how the American healthcare system is needlessly confusing. I won’t today because that’s not helpful. Instead, I’m going to give you tips that work.

Negotiate the total

Healthcare Bluebook is a guide to help you negotiate. This works better BEFORE you have a procedure. Look up what the fair price is for your procedure in your area.

1.	Go to healthcarebluebook.com and search your procedure (e.g., MRI, tonsillectomy, lab work).

	2.	Enter your zip code or city.

	3.	You’ll see a color-coded pricing guide:

	•	🟢 Green = Fair Price

	•	🟡 Yellow = Slightly high

	•	🔴 Red = Expensive

	4.	Call around to providers in your area and ask for cash prices or estimates. Use the Bluebook price as leverage:

“According to Healthcare Bluebook, a fair price for this MRI is $500. Can you match that?”

Ask for a pay-in-full discount.

Some billing departments will knock off 10–25% if you pay the full amount up front. I did this when I had my first baby.

Apply for financial assistance.

Most hospitals have a hardship program even for middle-income families.

Request a 0% interest payment plan.

Many hospitals offer these without running your credit.

Don’t assume the first bill is your final price always ask questions.

4 Ways to Lower a Medical Bill Before You Pay It

Time-Saving Tips for Moms With Kids in Therapy or LOTS of Appointments

If your week feels like a blur of therapy sessions, doctor appointments,

Over time, I have found some helpful ways to save time and reduce stress on these busy days. Here are my favorite tips that have made a big difference for our family.

1. Prep the Night Before

Spend a few minutes in the evening getting ready for the next day.

Leave NO decisions for the morning.

	•	Lay out clothes for everyone

	•	Pack snacks and therapy bags

	•	Pre-load the car with anything you will need

	•	Double-check your appointment times

I also love to premake breakfasts. Here is a great list of premade breakfasts kids will actually eat.

This helps mornings run smoother and prevents last-minute scrambling.

2. Keep a Car Kit Ready

Have a small bin in your car with essentials. This can include:

	•	Non-messy snacks

	•	Wipes and hand sanitizer

	•	A change of clothes

	•	Small toys or books

	•	A tablet or headphones

Having this ready means fewer stops and fewer meltdowns.

3. Simplify Meals

Plan easy meals on busy days.

	•	Use a crockpot or instant pot

	•	Plan a snacky dinner night

	•	Keep a few freezer meals on hand

I have a ton of crockpot recipes to help you out!

Give yourself permission to skip cooking from scratch on therapy days.

4. Stack Appointments When Possible

Ask providers if appointments can be scheduled back-to-back or on the same day.

Use waiting room time for small tasks like answering emails or placing grocery orders. This helps you stay productive and makes the most of your time.

5. Let Go of the Extra Tasks

Some things can wait. On appointment days, it is okay to let laundry or dishes slide. Prioritize what matters most and do not feel guilty about it.

	•	Paper plates

	•	Grocery delivery

	•	Minimal housekeeping

Final Thoughts

These small changes have helped me feel more in control of our busy weeks. I hope they help you too. If you have a favorite tip for saving time on appointment days, I would love to hear it in the comments.

Time-Saving Tips for Moms With Kids in Therapy or LOTS of Appointments

Cheap pantry staples for busy families

As a busy mom, having a well-stocked pantry and freezer can be a total

Tips for Bulk Prepping Freezer-to-Crockpot Meals

Freezer-to-crockpot meals are a game-changer for busy households, but when you’re prepping in bulk, a little organization goes a long way. Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you efficiently bulk prep meals that will last for weeks (or even months) and save you tons of time:

1. Choose the Right Recipes

Not all meals are ideal for the freezer, but many of your favorite slow-cooker dishes can be made in bulk and stored for later use. Stick to recipes that freeze well, such as stews, soups, chili, and casseroles. Ground meats, chicken, and pork are particularly freezer-friendly, as they hold up well to freezing and slow-cooking.

2. Double or Triple the Recipe

When making a freezer-to-crockpot meal, don’t just make one batch—make two or three! This way, you can stock up on multiple meals at once. Simply multiply the ingredients and prepare everything as you normally would. You can either freeze the extras in individual bags or containers or divide them into portions that suit your family’s needs.

3. Prep in Bulk, But Keep it Simple

To streamline your prep time, chop all the vegetables, portion out the seasonings, and measure out liquids ahead of time. For example, if a recipe calls for chopped onions, garlic, and carrots, chop enough for several meals in one go. Then, store each meal’s ingredients in labeled freezer bags or containers. This allows you to quickly assemble meals later without spending hours in the kitchen.

4. Invest in Good Freezer Storage

The key to freezing meals successfully is using the right storage. Freezer bags are perfect for storing soups and stews. Sturdy containers with airtight lids work well for casseroles or meat-based meals. Make sure you label each bag or container with the recipe name, date, and cooking instructions. This helps you easily identify meals in the freezer and keep track of how long they've been stored.

5. Use the Freezer as a Storage Space for Pre-assembled Meals

For freezer-to-crockpot meals, assembly is everything. For example, instead of cooking all the ingredients in advance, assemble the ingredients in a bag or container, then freeze them. For a Beef Stew or White Chicken Chili, you can combine the meat, beans, vegetables, and seasonings in a freezer bag and freeze it until you’re ready to cook. Just pour the contents into the crockpot, add any liquids (like broth), and let it cook.

6. Leave Out Dairy & Delicate Ingredients

Certain ingredients, like dairy (heavy cream, cheese) and fresh herbs, don’t freeze as well. When prepping meals, add dairy after cooking, or freeze it separately to add later. For example, if you’re making White Chicken Chili, freeze everything except the heavy cream, then stir it in during the last 15-20 minutes of cooking.

7. Pre-cook or Brown Meats for Extra Flavor

If your recipe involves browning or cooking meats first (such as ground beef for tacos or sausage for casseroles), do this step in advance before freezing. While this step isn’t always necessary, it enhances the flavor of the finished dish, especially for dishes like Beef Tacos or Peppers, Sausage, and Potatoes. Let the cooked meats cool before adding them to your freezer bags or containers.

8. Prepare for the Thawing Process

While some freezer-to-crockpot meals can be cooked from frozen, others will benefit from a night in the fridge to thaw. If you’re in a rush, it’s perfectly fine to cook from frozen—just be aware that it may take a bit longer to cook (you may need to add an extra hour or so). If you prefer to thaw, take the meal out the night before and let it thaw in the fridge, making sure the ingredients will fit easily into your slow cooker.

9. Consider Meal Groupings

If you’re really committed to the freezer-to-crockpot life, think about grouping similar meals together for the week. For example, you can freeze several bags of White Chicken Chili, Beef Stew, and Chicken and Rice Soup in individual portions. Then, just grab the one you want for that day and dump it in the slow cooker. This method is great for reducing the amount of time spent searching for meals in the freezer.

Freezer-to-crockpot meal prepping is a fantastic way to save time, reduce cooking stress, and have wholesome meals on hand whenever you need them. With a little planning and organization, you can build a stockpile of easy, nourishing meals that will feed your family without the hassle. So, gather your favorite recipes, grab some freezer bags, and start prepping—you’ll be glad you did!

Freezer-to-Crockpot Meals: Effortless Comfort for Busy Days

Three Easy Freezer to Crock Pot or Sheet Pan Meals

If you're tired of scrambling for dinner ideas after a long day, meal

Taco Sheet Pan Fajitas

Ingredients: Sliced chicken or beef, bell peppers, onion, taco seasoning, tortillas (to serve).

Instructions: Mix meat and veggies with seasoning. Bake at 400°F for 20-25 minutes.

Chicken and rice soup

What you'll need:

1 boneless skinless chicken breast cut into cubes

4 celery stalks, diced

4-6 carrots, diced

2 white potatoes, cubed

half an onion, chopped

2 bay leaves

Without measuring I threw in: dried basil, chives, and minced garlic

6 cups chicken stock

2 cups cooked rice (brown, white or wild)

Directions:

Layer everything (EXCEPT THE RICE) in your slow cooker. Cooke on low for 4-6 hours.

I cook my rice separately and serve the soup over the rice. You can combine all your leftovers in one container. I cook my rice separately to prevent it from absorbing too much liquid and becoming mushy.

Pro tip: If you want a creamy soup, add in 1/2 cup of half and half immediately before serving.

Summer is here, and with it comes endless opportunities for kids to explore, learn, and create. While structured activities are great, there’s something uniquely wonderful about giving children the freedom to use their imagination. Enter the tinker box: a treasure trove of random items designed to inspire creativity, problem-solving, and independent play. Here’s how to create a tinker box that will keep your kids engaged and imaginative all summer long.

Step 1: Gathering Materials

A tinker box is all about variety and the potential for open-ended play. Here's a list of items to get you started:

Basic Craft Supplies:

Colored paper

Glue sticks

Scissors (safety scissors for younger kids)

Markers, crayons, and colored pencils

Tape (masking, duct, and scotch)

String and yarn

Recyclables and Household Items:

Cardboard tubes (from paper towels and toilet paper rolls)

Egg cartons

Bottle caps

Old magazines and newspapers

Plastic containers

Aluminum foil

Nature Finds:

Rocks

Shells

Twigs

Leaves

Pinecones

Odds and Ends:

Buttons

Fabric scraps

Beads

Ribbon

Feathers

Tools (Supervised Use):

Kid-friendly hammer and nails

Hole punch

Magnifying glass

Measuring tape

Step 2: Organizing the Tinker Box

Organization is key to ensuring that your tinker box is both inviting and functional. Use small containers or ziplock bags to keep similar items together. For example, store buttons and beads in separate jars, keep paper scraps in a folder, and use a small box for string and yarn. A large plastic bin or a sturdy cardboard box can house everything, making it easy to transport the tinker box indoors or outdoors.

Step 3: Setting the Scene

Encourage creativity by creating an inviting space for tinkering. Set up a dedicated table or a corner of the room with plenty of light. Make sure there’s enough room for kids to spread out their materials and work on their projects.

Step 4: Encouraging Creative Play

Once the tinker box is ready, the fun begins! Here’s how to foster an environment that promotes creativity and exploration:

Open-Ended Questions:

Ask questions that spark imagination. Instead of “What are you making?” try “What do you think this could become?” or “How can these two things work together?”

Praise Effort, Not Just Results:

Focus on the process rather than the final product. Praise your child’s effort, problem-solving skills, and creativity. Comments like “I love how you figured that out!” or “What an interesting idea!” can boost their confidence and willingness to explore further.

Limit Instructions:

Resist the urge to give too many instructions. Allow kids to figure things out on their own. This fosters independence and critical thinking.

Show Interest:

Be genuinely interested in their creations. Ask them to explain their project and the story behind it. This not only validates their efforts but also encourages them to think more deeply about their work.

Introduce New Challenges:

Periodically add new items to the tinker box to keep things fresh and exciting. You can also introduce specific challenges, like “build something that can hold a small object” or “create a wearable piece of art.”

Model Creativity:

Engage with the tinker box yourself. Let your kids see you experimenting, making mistakes, and having fun. This models a positive attitude towards creative play.

Step 5: Document the Journey

Keep a notebook or a digital journal of your child’s creations. Encourage them to take photos of their projects, write about what they made, or even draw pictures of their ideas. This not only creates a wonderful keepsake but also helps them reflect on their creative journey.

Creating a Tinker Box: Helping Kids Get Creative Over the Summer Break

Our summer car kit!
I have four kids now. So it's safe to say I won't be dressing up and leaving my house anytime soon and even if I do I still have to keep things on a budget. However, I do believe it's important to continue to spend quality time with my husband.

I asked you guys over on Instagram for some frugal or free date night ideas, and this is what you came up with. I love it!

1. Eat around the world

"Send the kids to grandma's house, go back home and peacefully cook a nice dinner together. Make it something you've never tried! Then find a questionnaire for married couples online and ask questions while you eat. I like the idea of doing this monthly and picking a new country every month and make their native foods."

"We make sushi at home. It's something that we really enjoy as a couple and instead of going to a sushi restaurant we make them together!! Investing in the right supplies was practically no money and the ingredient costs are quite low compared to what we would pay if we went to a sit down restaurant."

2. Ocean view on a budget

"Going to the beach is free! Turn on the car radio and stare at the ocean if it's too cold to get out. We also used to hang out at the fishing pier and fish a little bit which is cheap if you already have a fishing pole."

"Go to the beach! Even 40 pounds heavier than on my wedding day, my husband still loves seeing me in a swimsuit. 😍It's cliche but, a romantic walk on the beach!!!"

3. Get outside

"We go on a nice long walk with the dogs. In the summer we go floating down the river or float around on the lake with friends."

"We are fortunate to live by so many parks and trails so for our cheapest dates we pack a lunch and hike/walk."

4. Take out

"When our kids were little we would put them to bed early one night each week and then one of us would go get take out and we would eat by candlelight. We couldn't afford a babysitter so this was a perfect solution for us!"

5. Sunrise in style

"Now that our kids are older and we can leave them at home we have been picking a picnic breakfast and head to the park to watch the sunrise on the weekends!"

6. Dessert date

"A dessert date! Have dinner as a family, and then go out for a shnazzy dessert after the baby sitter comes over. Or go out for sno cones/shaved ice during the summer!"

7. Nostalgia and snacks

"Going to a gas station with only $10 buying snacks then Pulling out the old VCR & watching old movies! It was always me & my husbands favorite date nights. 😊"

8. S'more time for couples

"Grab a blanket or quilt, pack a picnic and a book or a board game if you like those, go out in the backyard under the stars. Play music, light candles, make up stories to tell each other, plan, wish, dream. If conditions and ordinances allow build a fire, grill over it, make s'mores."

9. Netflix and Chill

Find a show to binge or a movie you want to watch and get frisky on the couch.

10. Day dating

"We do "date days" while the kids are at school so we save on expensive babysitting."

11. Library time

"Check out a movie from the library and pop some popcorn."

“Pick out a hard back for your partner to read. Then when you both are finished discuss.”

12. Happy hour

"A lot of restaurants here have happy hour. So we go to this place we like get a few $1.50 margaritas. Then to the dollar movies or go sit and watch the planes (we used to live near an airport) fun and cheap and kid free."

13. House hunters

"We go pretend house hunting. We drive through. Neighborhoods we can't afford and make up our life stories as we pick out which houses we would choose."

14. YouTube dates

"Honestly our date nights are usually taking the time to watch funny YouTube videos together in bed when all 3 kids are asleep."

15. Play the gift card game

"We decided to see how many gift cards we had with a smidgen of money left on them and then we had a date to use up those cards. We had barely enough for one coffee at Starbucks then off to target where we each got one new pair of underwear, staples we picked out new pens then Menards for a flower pot for me and cheap garden gloves for him. We were ecstatic to discover we had enough left over on an olive garden card to share a piece of black tie cake. All our date cost was $1 over at Target and the tip at olive garden. There is still one cent on the Menards card!"

16. Boardgames!

"We play board games. We buy them at Goodwill (all the games are $1.99) this way we can pick up a few at a time and try them out!"

Looking for a delightful Valentine's Day activity that doubles as a delicious treat? Look no further! Get ready to spread love and laughter in the kitchen with our Easy Funfetti Sandwich Cookies, the perfect Valentine's treat to make with kids. These delightful cookies aren't just about indulgence; they're so easy and use a BOXED CAKE MIX.

What you'll need:

One boxed Funfetti cake mix

2 eggs

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup oil

1 can frosting- I chose to use vanilla and flavor with strawberry Jello.

Combine your cake mix, oil, eggs and baking powder.

It will be thick- like cookie dough.

Spoon your cookies out onto parchment paper or a greased cookie sheet. This should yield 24 cookies- to make 12 pies.

Bake for 10 to 15 minutes at 350.

I used just a can of vanilla icing and I added in a table spoon of strawberry Jello to give it color and flavor.

Once your cookies have cooled, spoon your icing onto half your cookies.

Top your cookie with another cookie! If you have sprinkles you can roll your cookie in the sprinkles for a little something extra.

I chose Funfetti because they are colorful and fun- I mean fun is right there in the title! But you could use any combination. You could use plain, yellow cake mix and add chocolate chips.

You could use chocolate cake mix and use cream cheese icing. The possibilities are endless. It's all about creating a rare treat.

What kind of Valentine's Treats are you making?

EASY Funfetti Sandwich Cookies

Four EASY Recipes My Family LOVE

Four easy recipes my family is loving right now

<figure class="

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, finding quick and delicious recipes that satisfy the whole family can be a challenge. Whether you're a seasoned home chef or just starting your culinary journey, the quest for easy yet delightful meals is a universal pursuit.

Today I am sharing four recipes that have become absolute favorites in my family.

15-Minute Chicken Tacos

Ingredients:

2 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast

Taco Seasoning

Lime Juice

Olive Oil

Cheese

Flour Tortillas

Whatever else you put on tacos

Preheat your oven to 350

Cube your chicken and then sprinkle with taco seasoning (a buy mine in bulk but a packet size), a little bit of lime juice and enough olive oil to coat it. Stir.

Heat up a nonstick skillet on your stove top on high heat

Place your chicken in the skillet. DO NOT BEGIN TO STIR. Let it completely brown on one side. After it has browned on one side, stir. Sauté until it is cooked all the way through.

Place tortillas on a baking sheet.

Sprinkle cheese on your tortillas and add chicken. DO NOT FOLD.

Place everything in the oven and bake at 350 for about 3 minutes.

Take the baking sheet out and fold over your tortillas then place back in the oven for another 2 minutes

Air Fryer Crispy “Snack” Wrap

Do you remember these? McDonalds used to sell them. And one day, without warning they disappeared. This is my version. Yes, I feel silly sharing such a simple recipe. But whatever.

Ingredients:

Tortillas

Ranch (I just used sour cream and a ranch packet)

Crispy chicken tenders from the freezer section at the grocery store

Shredded lettuce

Cheese

Cook the tenders at 390 for 11 minutes. Then just put it all on the tortilla and eat it.

Buttermilk Waffles

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup flour

11/2 cup buttermilk

1 Tbsp baking powder

Salt

6 tbsp sugar

1 egg

3/4 cup oil

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Scoop out 1/4 cup and place in waffle iron.

Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies

I modified this recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction

Ingredients:

2 cups quick-cook oats

1/4 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup apple sauce

1 scoop protein powder (optional)

1 cup peanut butter

2 mashed bananas

1 egg

1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Preheat your oven to 350.

In a bowl mash a banana and add your oats and maple syrup. Stir.

Next, add in your peanut butter and apple sauce, stir.

Next whisk one egg and add to your mixture, stir. Add in your chocolate chips.

I baked these for about 20 minutes.

Four EASY Recipes My Family LOVE

No More Schedule Overwhelm: A Guide to Efficient Time Blocking

If you've ever found yourself drowning in a sea of tasks, struggling to

How to Time Block Efficiently

Set Clear Goals: Before you start time blocking, identify your priorities and set clear, achievable goals for each day. This will guide your time block allocations and ensure you're working towards your objectives.

Morning Planning Ritual: Begin your day by reviewing and adjusting your time blocks. This morning ritual helps you adapt to any changes or unexpected tasks that may arise.

Protect Your Time Zones: When assigning tasks to specific time blocks, consider the nature of the activity and your energy levels. For instance, if you're a morning person, reserve your most critical tasks for the morning block. Avoid scheduling tasks requiring high concentration during your relaxation or recreation time.

Buffer Zones: Incorporate buffer zones between time blocks to account for potential delays or the completion of tasks that spill over. This prevents the stress of falling behind schedule.

Batch Similar Tasks: Group similar tasks together during a single time block. This reduces context-switching and allows you to harness momentum, completing tasks more efficiently.

Time Blocking Across Time Zones

If you're collaborating with people in different time zones, it's crucial to align your time blocks with their working hours. Use tools like World Time Buddy to find overlapping time slots and schedule meetings or collaborative tasks during those periods. Respect your own time zone's boundaries, and avoid scheduling intensive tasks during non-optimal hours.

Wrapping Up

Time blocking is a game-changer when it comes to boosting productivity and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. With the four-block strategy and the free printable template, you now have the tools to take control of your time and make every moment count.

Remember, the key to success lies in consistency. Stick to your time blocks, stay adaptable, and watch as your productivity soars to new heights.
As we gear up for the most wonderful time of the year, there's a little tool in our holiday survival kit that's about to become your new BFF – time blocking.

Picture this: a Christmas season where stress takes a backseat, and you're the one steering the sleigh. We get it, the holidays can be a wild ride, but fear not! In this cozy corner of the internet, we're diving into the art of time blocking and how it's the secret sauce to transforming chaos into calm during the Christmas hustle and bustle. So grab your favorite festive mug, snuggle up, and let's sleigh this holiday stress together!

Time blocking is a productivity technique where you schedule specific blocks of time for different tasks or activities.

When applied to holiday-related tasks, time blocking can be particularly effective in helping you stay organized and reduce the stress associated with last-minute preparations. Here's a more detailed explanation:

Create a Holiday Calendar:

Start by creating a calendar dedicated to holiday-related tasks. This can be a physical planner, a digital calendar, or a combination of both.

Mark important dates, such as family gatherings, parties, and deadlines for online shopping or sending out holiday cards.

Identify Tasks and Prioritize:

Make a list of all the tasks you need to accomplish during the holiday season. This may include shopping for gifts, decorating, cooking, and more.

Prioritize tasks based on their importance and deadlines. Identify critical tasks that need to be completed first.

Allocate Time Blocks:

Assign specific time blocks to each task or group of related tasks.
