But I was missing the main thing – I had no team and no programming skills at all. Even worse – I did not even have a technical education!

Over and over again I have been reading the blogs and reports about the Gold Rush in the Apps Store where small guys like you and me achieved immense success by creating simple but great applications or games!

If you sell your app for $0.99 and get $0.70 from it after all apple commission cuts you are left with pure profit of $24,500 USD per DAY! Well, you can’t live with that but that is a good start, isn’t it

This thought would not let me sleep well. Of course I did not live in the illusion that I would get on top with my first app but you know me already – I am a kind of guy who always wants to reach the stars!

So my target was to get into the Top100 Apps at least.

Here is what I did. I decided to take it really seriously. First, I bought all the books available in my local Barnes&Noble store and on Amazon as well. Everything from Iphone Development for dummies to the advanced experts-stuff.

Oh boy, that was a real head ache to read all that stuff. It took me about 3 months alone to read all those books.

And you know what?

After I tried to implement the knowledge I was totally disappointed – most of the printed books turned out to be completely outdated. You know it is a long process after you write a book, it goes to the publisher, stays in editing for weeks, then the printing office keeps delaying it again and again. Then you need to distribute it throughout the country to local shops etc.. And the things change so fast. Once iPod was released, next year iPhone, then iPhone3GS, then iPad, then iPhone4, iPad2, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5… the list goes on and on. Things change so fast and these printed books can’t even catch up. Most samples were outdated and never worked for me. What a bummer.

So finally after reading all this crap my head was ready to explode and I decided to take action. My first game was supposed to be the simple “Hidden object” game –you know where you tap the screen to find the hidden objects. I found out that these kind of games are very popular among people and I figured out it is pretty easy to make it – you simply need several images properly cut into layers and a little bit of coding.

Getting a developer account with Apple was pretty easy, so I went ahead and opened it and started the development.

Since I had no one to help and guide me – I guess I spent 3 times longer than average creating it than I actually needed to. In about 2 months of sleepless nights my game was finally ready. The approval process from apple took about a week. This week of waiting was the most frustrating time for me, it felt like time itself stopped… I got so nervous my hands even shook. What if they disapproved of it? I have read tons of horror stories about developers failing because Apple did not accept their game or delayed approval for months.
I could not even sleep. I was checking my email and Dev account every minute to see the desired “your App was approved” message from Apple. I was so noxious I even sent 3 followup emails asking apple why it takes so long. Don’t do that guys, I heard you only make the reviewers angry if you display impatience!

Finally I got approved and the sales started! I went to bed dreaming about loads of cash rushing into my pockets.

And can you imagine what happened?

 

I failed miserably!

The next day, when I checked my sales, I saw the devastating numbers – 16 copies sold. Total net profit: $9 … Well, obviously not the kind of numbers I was expecting…

Next day – 11 copies, then 8 copies, then about 2-3 copies per day during the next week. After 2 weeks my total net profit was around 50 bucks.. Sounds like now I have enough money to invite my girlfriend to McDonalds, right… what an epic failure.

And here is why.

Creating a great app or game is only part of the story. The most important part is how to sell it successfully and get on top of apps store sales. That’s what most developers are missing, failing one after another in their efforts to live their dream. They put all their efforts into the development and miss the most important part – successful marketing! Even the best app can remain totally unknown if you fail to market it properly.

Once I realized this, I decided not to give up. So I spent the next 6 months making the comprehensive market research. I contacted 135 top apple apps and games developers asking for help and advice. As you may expect, 90% of them simply ignored me. But you know I am not kind of guy who gives up easily.

 

Those 10% who replied gave me knowledge you’d never find in books or on the internet.

Here are seven apps that you should try if you have just bought yourself an iPad. They are better than any of the iPhone versions because they have larger displays, they are easier to read and some of them have more functions. Some of them are just iPad apps and some are also available on the iPhone and Android. The apps are in no particular order because they each do different things.

 1 – PowerOne Finance Calculator

This is an RPN and algebraic calculator, and is good if you work within the finance field. It can help you to work out ROI, and do various types of conversions. It allows you to calculate compound growths, profit margins, auto loans, depreciation, etc.

 2 – Easy Books

This app is handy if you have to maintain a lot of accounts at once. If you are self-employed you may have to manage different accounts, and it is unlikely that any of them start and finish at the same time. This app can go some way to synchronizing your efforts so that you do not accidentally come up short on one of your accounts or budgets. This is an app that is good at making accounting tasks a little easier, and is great for people who do not like the Sage program.

 3 – PocketMoney

This is a personal financial manager app that is very easy to use. It looks great and has a fairly simple function. It has a “budget bar” panel with which you can see a visual representation of your budget. You are able to see if you are draining one of your budgets in the same way you may check a car for petrol. This is a good single-glance app, because it shows you (in one glance) just how much of your budget you have left.

 4 – The Wall Street Journal

This is a finance app that allows you to read the Wall Street Journal. It is a financial newspaper which is similar to the British Financial Times newspaper. This app allows you to read the paper with a very high quality display. It is not a text-to-screen job, because they have put a lot of attention into making the pages seem pleasant and readable. It also has interactive pages, slideshows, videos and pictures too.

 5 – Account Tracker

This is a budgeting tool that you can use to manage your expense accounts with consummate ease. It allows you to track how you are spending your money and how much of your budget you have left. It is very good for taking a quick glance at your finances every now and again. The app is very customizable so that you can change and adjust it to your specific needs. You can set up things such as alerts that will tell you if you have overdrawn or have gone over your budget.

 6 – PayPal

There are a lot of apps that allow you to access your PayPal account, and as you may imagine, there is one for the iPad. The PayPal app is good for gaining access to your account so that you can check your balance, upload and withdraw money. It is also good for receiving money that is in a different currency, as you can change it right there and then. PayPal also have a very quick withdrawal time if you have a business account and are a regular user. PayPal acts as a very good intermediate, which people should use if they do not want to keep giving away their card details to websites.

7 – Bloomberg for iPad

This is also an iPhone app that you can use to look at stocks and shares. The iPad version is better than the iPhone version because the interface is bigger and subsequently easier to use. It allows you to take a closer look at an awful lot of information in one go. It is good for experts and amateurs. It is also very well presented and very good at its job.

The designers created an intuitive app that combines all of your debt from nearly every major financial institution and does so with ‘bank-grade encryption’. First use the service to help you easily create a pay-down plan and then the app will help you stick to it with reminders, graphs and charts showing your savings, and automatic payments. They boast over 15 million dollars of debt have been paid off with the use of their app, and with how easy it is to use, we believe it.  (Cost: free)

3. Concur (Android, iOS)

Concur is great for personal use, but it really shines when implemented in a small or medium sized business setting. Businesses benefit from the easy to use app which allows users to track business travel and manage expense reports from their mobile device. Features like the ability to scan in receipts and keep track of all the data on each receipt are easy to access and use. The ability itemize charges, submit and approve expense reports, create and manage meetings and even do most of your travel booking helped this app stick out from the others. Like some of the other featured apps, this is a companion to a web-based service, but if you’re company already uses Concur on the web, do yourself a favor and get the app too. (Cost: free)

4. Mint (Android, iOS)

The award winning free online service has a new app and it’s loaded full of great features. Our favorite aspect of the app is the budget planner, but of course you can use it for more than just creating and managing a budget. The secure service allows you to hook into all of your bank accounts and credit cards, and then monitor your spending and set alerts and reminders for payments due. This app isn’t one of the most robust that we reviewed, but it does everything that it advertises extremely well and hooks into its website service seamlessly. (Cost: free)

5. HelloWallet (iOS)

If you’re lucky enough to work for a business that provides you with HelloWallet membership, you need to get this app now. The app has all the standard features you’d expect like the abilities to manage and track your spending or create a budget, but it also serves as a digital wallet, allowing you to scan in business cards, credit card info, and just about anything you have in your real wallet. It will also analyze your spending and let you know if you’re spending too much on a service (like a gym membership), and offer better deals!  While app is free to use and buy, it does require your employer to be a member of the online program, so be sure to check before trying it out. (Cost: free)

SpiderOak is yet another Dropbox alternative with much the same features. Where SpiderOak stands out is its obsession with security. If you have particularly sensitive information, SpiderOak is the best choice for you.

Developed by Project Fast Lane LLC, it not only helps you FIND the trucks in your location, but you can place a mobile order! You’ll have great food waiting for you when you get there! (FREE)

4)      TruxMap Lite

TruxMap Lite has a database of 21 cities in which to locate the truck of your choice. You might even find one that’s close to you. It features map tracking for the trucks and customer reviews. What most people love about though is the extensive listings. It has the most complete database of all of the apps on the market. This is the one you want if you are serious about your love of food. It’s probably the most complete app going.

5)      Food Truck Fiesta

Food Truck Fiesta works with Twitter to help you track that truck. This blog site posts updates frequently about new trucks and favorite trucks. Information about truck related events and a listing of food trucks are offered. If you click on the truck on the map, it connects to its Twitter feed. ($0.99)

6)      Untable

Developed by Qatanga, Untable desires to make itself a link between you and your favorite food truck. They want to feed the addiction. The app has two parts. One is for the food trucks that need to update their locations and contact their customer base using social networks like Facebook. The other lists food trucks and updates. Save money by grabbing up daily truck specials that are updated frequently, follow your favorites by name or location. The best part is if you have one of these trucks in your area, you can save a lot of money on great food. (FREE)

7)      Food Truck Tracker by BurgerBeast

Developed by Thirtynine, this app is the ultimate in food truck stalking. Though it’s designed for the Miami metropolitan area, this is still a great app to keep your eye on. They claim they might expand. Find you a truck you really like and track them on a Google map. Save it as a favorite and check out the menu on your mobile device. It’s the ultimate in truck food fun! (FREE)

8) Road Stoves

Developed by Mobile Restaurants, Road Stoves is an L.A. based app that utilizes GPS tracking technology. If you contact them, they will use your location to give you directions to the truck via Twitter. They only do this with food trucks located within Los Angeles County. It’s still a fun app and demonstrates what might be on the horizon for the locations near you! (FREE)

An easy-to-use free app, Evernote helps you stay organized across all of your devices. Video games have been popular for years, and most young people don’t know what it’s like to live in a world without them.

Video games have become so popular in recent years that even educational institutions and businesses have started using them to teach and train people. While video games used to be part of a home entertainment system or computer system, the invention of very powerful cell phones and tablets have made app games more and more popular. Gone are the days of that one really bad game you used to have on your cell phone. Though the technology for app games has changed and is much more advanced than it used to be, different games are available in app form than in traditional video game form, and the people playing these games are somewhat different.

Traditional Video Games

Traditional video games include computer games and home entertainment system games – systems like the Xbox and Nintendo Wii. The games offered through traditional systems are somewhat different than those offered through apps. Examples of traditional video games include sports games where you control a team or player on a football field or basketball court and simulation games that can vary from fantasy to war to parking mania. Traditional video games tend to have multiple levels that allow users to play for a long period of time without getting bored or feeling like they’re doing the same thing over and over again.

App Games

App games don’t offer the same depth as traditional games, and most people play them passively. A lot of people play app games when they’re waiting on something – their name to be called in a busy restaurant or coffee shop, for example. The level of attention that needs to be paid to an app game is generally much lower. The types of games offered through apps are also different. While there are some traditional-style action and sports games, they’re much simpler since they’re designed to be played on a phone or tablet that doesn’t offer the same control as a traditional video game system or computer. Still, the most common types of app games are things like Sudoku and Bejewled. These types of non-action games are by far the most popular when it comes to app games.

Price Differences

Traditional video game systems are often quite expensive – many costing $300 – $500 depending on what optional components you purchase. When it comes to app games, most are downloaded on a cell phone or tablet – something that the consumer likely didn’t buy specifically to play games. Video games designed specifically for gaming systems are also much more expensive than app games. Traditionally, video games can cost users between $50 and $100. An app game isn’t likely to cost more than $5, and most of them sell for considerably less than $5. Of course, the cost of traditional video games makes sense, and if developers tried to sell their games for the same price as app games, they would lose considerable amounts of money. Traditional video games often take years to develop. App games are often developed by one or two people in a fairly short period of time.

Who’s Playing Them?

Traditional video games have always been the domain of young men, though there are some young female users as well. Most traditional video game players are thought to be young men between the age of 15 and 30 years old. App games, because they’re much more affordable and don’t require in-depth knowledge in order to play, are being played by a much more broad demographic. In fact, everyone from young children, to young men, to older women are playing app games.

So ultimately, everyone is spending a good deal of time playing video games whether they are traditional or an app, but based on statistics the stereotype is true – mostly men are hanging out on their couches fighting wars against aliens and hitting home runs that win the World Series.
