Oddly enough, Jannine’s husband had just intimated to Kali that he might need a lawyer. To find answers, Kali digs up the dirt on her friends. Reservations about her job back home and about her lawyer boyfriend interfere, as does her father’s pregnant spaniel. Although Jacobs uses a rather routine formula, this books should appeal to fans of Kate Austen.

He stood patiently, a wire garrote in his strong hands, ready to claim yet another victim. Soon he would have one more to add to his growing list unless they could stop him. But how could they when they didn’t know who he was? What he was? To a terrified city he was known only as the Wireman.

Set in the 1970s, two brothers return from the Vietnam war with blood on their hands. Learning to kill the enemy wasn’t something that would go away when they returned home to Houston, Texas. Could one of them be the serial killer, Wireman? Could the other stop him?

There he meets The Traveler, a tall, gangly being who shows Roy how to use the cylinder to visit other civilizations that co-exist on “his” Earth, each occupying a different, thin Time Slice. The Traveler solicits Roy’s help in recovering an object invented by his murdered father and beyond his own reach. Roy is his last hope. At first it seems that the Traveler’s wish might be easily granted. But after Roy’s wife Emily becomes ill and his daughter’s long-held resentments rise to the surface, he can no longer “travel” at a moment’s notice. He also discovers the very real physical and mental risks involved in roaming the Time Stream. Despite the dangers, Roy is determined to help the Traveler. But he can’t do it alone. Fortunately he has a loving wife and a core group of loyal friends. But first he must convince them — and his daughter — that he isn’t crazy …

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is Postcards from Nam, a contemporary fiction novel by Uyen Nicole Duong, and is normally $6.24 in the Amazon Kindle Store but has been discounted to just $0.99 for today only. It has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 29 customer reviews, and you can pick up your copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/kddeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Award-Winning Finalist in the Fiction: Multicultural category of the 2012 International Book Awards

Mimi (the protagonist of Mimi and Her Mirror) is a successful young Vietnamese immigrant practicing law in Washington, D.C. when the postcards begin to arrive. Postmarked from Thailand, each hand-drawn card is beautifully rendered and signed simply “Nam.” Mimi doesn’t recognize the name, but Nam obviously knows her well, spurring her to launch what will become a decade-long quest to find him. As her search progresses, long-repressed memories begin to bubble to the surface: her childhood in 1970s Vietnam in a small alley in pre-Communist Saigon. Back then, who was her best friend as well as her brother’s playmate, and what did art have anything to do with the alleys of her childhood? What was the dream of these children then? What happened when these children were separated by the end of the Vietnam war, their lives diverged onto different paths: one to freedom and opportunity, the other to tragedy and pain? Now Mimi must uncover the mystery of the postcards, including what might have happened to the people who where less fortunate: those who escaped the ravaged homeland by boat after the fall of Saigon. When the mystery is solved, Mimi has to make a resolution: what can possibly reunite the children from the alley of her childhood even when the alley exists no more?

The Opening addresses the age-old question ‘what happens when we die?’ with a spiritual fantasy of immense charm and imagination. At once an insightful meditation on life’s passages and a vision of unearthly realms, it creates its own enchanted worlds where characters connect with one another between here and the hereafter across the thinnest of lines.

Joe St. John wanders out into a blizzard and falls through an opening that leads him to amazing, sometimes harrowing places where he encounters the major turning points in his life. Along the way, he revisits his missed opportunities, uncovers his life’s core trauma, and is given mysterious geometrical symbols that hold the key to his future.

As Joe’s soul hovers between two worlds he will discover the truth about life and death, and be confronted with the ultimate choice: save his own life, or give it up for someone he loves.

A sparkling, hallucinatory, fast-paced read with unexpected twists of plot, imbued with a childlike sense of wonder. You’ll love floating in the book’s magical dreamscape, and may find yourself wanting to read it again and again to uncover its mystical insights and layers of meaning.

Have You Found Your Eighth Sea?

In the cold, black hold of a sailing ship, a young woman lies dying, tormented that her death will mean nothing. No one will know. No one will care. Only the will to find a purpose for her life keeps breath in her exhausted body.

Far away, a soft Carolina breeze touches a mother’s face as she peers into the night sky, agonizing over the loss of her infant daughter nineteen years before. A haunting vision that will not leave her—it whispers of a living tie, still unbroken, to that baby long ago. Worlds apart and unaware of one another, the mother and daughter fight their lonely battles for survival.

Between them—a man rising to greatness with the new America will bring them together.

In 1769, on the shores of St. Christopher in the West Indies, Weston and Emily Emerson are devastated by the sight of their infant daughter’s blanket floating among the splintered remains of a lifeboat. The voyage that began with promise of a new beginning in America ends in tragedy when a violent storm separates them from their child. Believing their daughter has perished, the heartbroken Emersons continue their voyage to the Colonies, not knowing Brenna was rescued.

Nineteen years later, Brenna, unaware of her true identity, begins an odyssey that will take her far from her dismal existence on St. Christopher. A chance encounter with a mysterious stranger will forever change the course of her life. In the old Roman city of Bath, Nathan begins an unrelenting search for Brenna that sweeps across England, involving romance, murder, and intrigue.

The themes of this story are universal: a long journey; separation and return; uncertainty; searching and finding; the search for understanding God’s will amidst tragedy; and finally, the realization that people can be bound together forever.

The Eighth Sea is a passionate love story involving two unforgettable characters—Brenna and Nathan. Their story is our story—finding our place in the world, the meaning of our lives, our way home. Brenna’s solution is to set sail beyond the only world she has ever known and into her eighth sea. The story is inspirational, and its romance is deep and enduring.

Struggling to triumph are three major characters: Brenna—determined to find her place in the world yet haunted by the shadows of abandonment and self-doubt; Emily—plagued with grief over the loss of her only child an unable to shake a disturbing sense that something is unresolved; and Nathan—strong and charismatic, discovering that in his search for Brenna, he has found himself. Their story is a tribute to the human experiences of good overcoming evil, the power of persistence, seeking God, and finally, of love enduring against all odds.

The Eighth Sea is hard to put down, a deep and enduring romance, a plot filled with unexpected twists and the characters hard to get out of one’s mind…an inspiring journey into the unknown. A book club must read!

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:
Could an ancient scroll discovered in a vault beneath Baghdad’s Azzohour Palace provide the answer to Iraq’s current crisis? The scroll—pre-dating Hammurabi’s Code by more than 7000 years—details the life of a shepherd who became the founder of a country that existed and thrived in pre-history. It may be the most profound archeological find ever. Shortly after the first Gulf War, an ancient gold-paneled tomb is discovered in Baghdad. Dr. Elman Darshi, the world’s leading Sumerian language authority, is ordered by Saddam to translate the find. Warned of Saddam’s paranoia over ancient prophecies, the professor smuggles his translation to his daughter Alexandria, a doctoral student at University of California, Berkeley. Shortly after completing the translation, Dr. Darshi, his wife, and youngest daughter disappear. When Iraq is liberated and Saddam deposed, the secret tomb is rediscovered. Only Alexandria can read the esoteric writing inscribed on its walls. Together with Dr. Ibrahim Feroz, a young and handsome associate professor at University of Chicago, they present the ancient poem, called The Song of Ayuba, to the world on a global National Geographic TV special.
When the inscribed panels are removed from the underground crypt, a scroll incased in an urn is discovered. It is an autobiography of a warrior poet named Ayuba and proves to be the oldest writing in the world. Publication of the scroll reveals profound life lessons that foment fear and anger in radical Muslims and hope for the majority throughout the Middle East.
Ayuba’s message makes In the Shadow of Babylon hard to put down—each page reveals a new adventure brimming with danger. Ayuba’s message echoes through several millennium. A stanza of his epic poem inscribed on the gold panels now on display in the Museum of Ancient History located on the ruins of the storied city of Babylon sums up the vision of his life.

Sleep, and in the veil of night
Dream of valor in the light
When comes the awakening dawn
It is your dreams you act upon

In The Shadow of Babylon is a story about the modern world of Jihad, terror and suffering wrapped in an ancient message of bravery, wisdom and joy. The lessons learned by the warrior poet Ayuba as he transitions from an ignorant orphan held in captivity by a band of brutal nomads into a heroic leader of an ancient country are as critical to the 21st century as they were 10,000 years ago.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

WHEN TEENAGE GIRLS VANISH in what was once considered a safe, Louisiana bayou town, the lives of four desperate young locals take unexpected turns, begging the question: Do you every truly know those closest to you?

When nineteen-year-old Tiffany Perron vanishes from rural Grand Trespass, Louisiana, best friend HALEY LANDRY’s relationship with her boyfriend becomes increasingly strained. To make matters worse, her impressionable younger sister BECKY has begun idolizing an impetuous, seductive 15 year old who’s encouraging her to do dangerous things.

Meanwhile, ERICA DUVALL, a reclusive 19-year-old aspiring writer, befriends Haley. Ten years earlier, Erica’s mother abandoned her, leaving her with the womanizing used car salesman father she loathes. She’s decided to write a novel based on Tiffany’s disappearance; a novel that she hopes will lead to a reunion with her estranged novelist mother.

RACHEL ANDERSON, a 36-year-old mother of two, is having trouble coming to terms with her husband, TOM’s, affair with the missing girl—a relationship that supposedly ended shortly before Tiffany’s disappearance. What’s more, she comes to the blood curdling realization that someone is watching her through the large back windows of her house.

A DISTURBED MAN also lives in the area. Ever since his mother’s murder four years earlier, he’s been raising his insolent teenage sister, ALLIE, who sleeps with truck drivers for money. He considers women to be dangerous—and his world revolves around his fear and hatred for them. He’s terrified of his sister, knowing she’s intent on pushing him over the edge.

Red is a user. Red is a pusher. Red is a drug addict.

And that’s not a problem.

Everybody in the Four Posts is nursing an addiction to something. In fact, their entire economy is based on the ‘feed: An officially sanctioned, omnipresent drug delivery system with terminals in every home. Red’s talent for mixing new and interesting narcotic concoctions isn’t an issue, but the fact that he accidentally ran while testing an expensive new prototype just might be. Now, with the help of QC, a walking nanotech factory, and Byron, an upper-class slacker literally addicted to the past, Red has to figure out what the strange experimental drug is doing to his mind before the sinister, faceless recovery agents tear him apart.

That is, if his frightening and increasingly real hallucinations don’t do it first.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

It is the spring of 1968 in Belfast, Northern Ireland and James Kirkpatrick has just lost his father under suspicious circumstances, Casey Riordan is released from prison after five years and Pamela O’Flaherty has crossed an ocean and a lifetime of memories to find the man she fell in love with as a little girl. All three lives are on a collision course with each other against the backdrop of the burgeoning civil rights movement and a nation on the brink of revolution.
They come from disparate backgrounds- Jamie a wealthy industrialist whose life is like an imperfect but many faceted jewel- brilliant, flawed and with a glitter that is designed to distract the observer. Casey- a card carrying member of the Irish Republican Army, who must face the fact that five years away has left him a stranger, a misfit in his own neighbourhood where not everyone is sympathetic to a convicted rebel. Pamela- who has come to Ireland in search of a memory and a man who may not have existed in the first place.

Through it all runs the ribbon of a love story; love of country, the beginning love of two people unable to resist the pull of each another regardless of the cost to themselves and those around them and the selfless love of one man who no longer believes himself capable of such emotion.

Ultimately this is the story of Ireland herself, of how nation is bound to one’s identity, woven into the weft of all we become. And whether, finally, freedom and peace can walk down the same road, hand in hand.

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is The Manhattan Project, a Non-Fiction / History book by Cynthia C. Kelly and Richard Rhodes, and is normally $9.07 in the Amazon Kindle Store but has been discounted to just $1.99 for today only. It has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 19 customer reviews, and you can pick up your copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/kddeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Born out of a small research program that began in 1939, the Manhattan Project brought together the cream of the scientific community and the military to create and perfect a weapon more powerful than any the world had known. Racing against time as the war raged in Europe and Asia, and against our enemies, whom we feared were pursuing similar ends, the Project would eventually employ more than 125,000 people and cost a total of over $2 billion—and the entire operation was conducted under a shroud of secrecy, at remote sites around the country.

This groundbreaking book—the first of its kind—collects the writings and thoughts of the original participants in the Manhattan Project, along with pieces by the most important historians and interpreters of the subject. It is a rich and comprehensive compilation of documents, essays, articles, and excerpts from histories, biographies, plays, novels, letters, oral histories, and more, and is the freshest, most multi-faceted exploration yet of the topic. Including material by and about J. Robert Oppenheimer, Leo Szilard, Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Leslie Groves, Klaus Fuchs, Henry Stimson, Vannevar Bush, Harry S. Truman, Niels Bohr, and many other key figures, it also collects the writings and testimony of those in the trenches at the Project, their families, and local eyewitnesses. Finally, the book includes thoughts and concerns about the bomb, set down in the aftermath of its deployment, by politicians, writers, artists, and others who saw that the world would never again be the same.

Assembled with authority and care by the president of the Atomic Heritage Foundation—in cooperation with a team of advising historians that included the Pulitzer Prize-winning Richard Rhodes—The Manhattan Project is an invaluable addition to the historical record as well as a gripping narrative of scientific discovery, military strategy, and moral reflection.

Each day, Amazon offers a free Android App of the Day that could be a game, utility, or who knows? Each deal lasts for just 24 hours and, after that period is over it goes back to paid status and a new app is the App of the Day.

In addition to your Kindle Fire, these apps will also work with your Android-based smartphones and tablet computers.

Today’s App of the Day is Score It (Word) and this game is normally $0.99 in the Amazon App Store. You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://tinyurl.com/appdeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the app’s description from the Amazon App Store website:

Show your word power with Score It (Word), a challenging word game. Stimulate your brain while having fun. Score It (Word) is a great way to improve word building skills that you can apply to many other word games.

Guess the Word

The object of the game is to guess the word from the first given letter. After each guess, a letter is placed in the word that is in the correct position. Any letter in the red ball is in the word but not in the correct position. If an invalid word is entered, you lose a turn, and the word is displayed in red. When you run out of time, the answer is displayed.

Extra Credit

The number of turns to guess the word is equal to the number of letters (five, six, or seven letters). If you solve the word in fewer tries, you earn bonus points. You start with three credits; with every five correct words, you earn an extra credit.

Score It (Word) helps warm up your brain before you hit that next Scrabble or Boggle game. Can you beat the clock?

Iron Branch: A Civil War Tale of a Woman In-Between by Kelby Ouchley has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 12 customer reviews. I received an email from the author saying this would be free through June 3rd.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Iron Branch explores cultural conflicts of the American Civil War era as experienced by those not often elevated to lead roles. Abita Carter, a half-Choctaw woman who describes herself as always “in-between,” tells the story of her life and that of the young lawyer/soldier, Minor Barrett, in north Louisiana during the Civil War. The core of the tale involves Abita’s journey to find Minor, who is reported to have been wounded during the siege of Vicksburg. Along the way she faces a cast of characters with varying intentions. General Grant’s wife, a family of slaves with compassion beyond reason, and a small blind mule are among those encountered in the rich, Deep South setting. None, though, is more distracting than Minor’s blue-blooded wife, who seeks her husband for a different purpose. Abita’s state of “in-between” takes on new meanings as she is drawn ever deeper into the turmoil of the times. Passion, self-doubt, and malice finally threaten her existence in any condition.

Earth Shaker—a sensual, chilling take on Beauty and the Beast. An unscrupulous curator, Douglas Hackett and his beautiful associate, Naomi Slocum, discover the legendary Greek Minotaur Asterius, cocooned in a perpetual sleep. Imprisoned deep in a labyrinth by his father King Minos, this demi-god roamed through the darkness hungering for what gave him life. His violent rages were subdued only by the continued sacrifice of young maidens, especially those with crimson hair. After smuggling the completely intact body from Crete to D.C., it isn’t long before all hell breaks loose as Asterius comes to life. Deep below Hackett’s Museum of the Unnatural, Asterius is completely obsessed with Naomi and claims her as his beloved—destined to bear him a son. Naomi finds herself increasingly mesmerized by Asterius and his abilities as a “bone-waker”—a creature with a life force so strong—he can revive the dead. Naomi must choose between being truly human or succumbing to the beast within…. The depth of human passion sets this terrifying thriller apart from just another monster story. The relationship between Naomi and Asterius, while exploring her disturbing dark side, reveals the raw emotions of humanity. Naomi soon learns the importance in heeding those words: Rest in Peace.

“I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Winston Churchill led the life that many men would love to live. He survived 50 gunfights and drank 20,000 bottles of champagne…And of course, by resisting Hitler, he saved Europe and perhaps the world.” – Mark Riebling in “Churchill’s Finest Hour”.

One has been considered America’s greatest president of the 20th century. The other was voted the Greatest Briton of All Time by his own countrymen.

Winston Churchill led an astonishing life as a soldier, world statesman, historian and Noble Prize Laureate. When he died at 90 in 1965, one of the most important figures in modern history had left the stage. From providing some of the 20th century’s greatest soundbytes to successfully navigating Great Britain to victory in World War II against great odds, Churchill was at the forefront of global events for decades, becoming one of the most influential Britons in history. In 2002, he was named the Greatest Briton of All Time, and 40 years earlier he was the first person to be made an Honorary Citizen of the United States.

The tenacious Bulldog was joined in the war effort by Roosevelt, America’s most unique president if not the greatest. A well-connected relative of Theodore Roosevelt, FDR was groomed for greatness until he was struck down by polio. Nevertheless, he persevered, rising through New York politics to reach the White House just as the country faced its greatest challenge since the Civil War, beginning his presidency with one of the most iconic lines ever spoken during an inaugural address. For over a decade, President Roosevelt threw everything he had at the Great Depression, and then threw everything the country had at the Axis powers during World War II. Ultimately, he succumbed to illness in the middle of his fourth term, just before the Allies won the war.

Although the two men are remembered as the erstwhile leaders of the Allies in World War II, their up-and-down relationship directed the Allied war effort in North Africa, Sicily, and ultimately D-Day. Churchill & Roosevelt analyzes their relationship during the war, but it also covers the rise of both men to their respective positions as heads of state, weaving their stories together into one narrative. This book also humanizes Britain’s greatest Prime Minister and America’s ongest serving president, one who had to overcome a stutter to become his century’s most quotable speaker and the other who overcame polio to capture the presidency and defeat Depression and the Axis powers. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events in their lives, you will learn interesting facts about FDR and Churchill you never knew, and you will learn about the men who saved the free world like you never have before.

“Anywhere I see suffering, that is where I want to be, doing what I can.” – Diana

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ British Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of Great Britain’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

Born in 1961, the woman who would become Princess of Wales and one of the most famous people in the world was literally nameless for a week. Expecting a boy, the parents finally came to grips with the fact that she was a girl and eventually named her Diana. Fittingly, even though Diana had been born into one of Britain’s most historic and prominent families, the world came to know her better for her first name than her last name, Spencer.

Diana’s first brush with Prince Charles came when the prince was dating her older sister, but the world met Lady Diana after Charles began courting her from 1980-1981. The two were married in the most famous and watched wedding of the 20th century, with nearly 750,000 tuning and over half a million standing outside to see the Royal Wedding. From then on, Diana became one of the most famous people in the world, with every step she took and every decision she made heavily scrutinized across the world. Though she stayed busy with international charities, human rights work, being a mother, and all of the necessities being part of the Royal Family required, Diana remained a tabloid fixture all the while.

Thanks to her fame, the life and tragic death of “Princess Di” are known the world over, and despite all of the controversies that swirled around her during her final years, Considered a saint by some and a traitor to the established order by others, Diana nevertheless remains one of the most famous and popular Britons in history. Ranked the 3rd Greatest Briton of All Time in a nationwide poll, Diana ranked ahead of icons like Isaac Newton and William Shakespeare, and she continues to be the standard by which all future women in the Royal Family will be judged. British Legends: The Life and Legacy of Diana, Princess of Wales details Diana’s life and career, including its famous ups and infamous downs, but it also humanizes her and intimately explores what Lady Di was like before Legend Di enveloped her legacy. Beyond the smoke and mirrors, here is the story of an extraordinary life.

Along with pictures of important people, places, and events in his life, you will learn about Diana like you never have before, in no time at all.

The Kindle Daily Deal is a one-day only offer where a specific Kindle book has been hand-selected by the editors at Amazon and significantly discounted for today only.

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is The Naming: The First Book of Pellinor, a children’s book by Alison Croggin, and is normally $3.49 in the Amazon Kindle Store but has been discounted to just $1.99 for today only. It has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 76 customer reviews, and you can pick up your copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/kddeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Grade 7 Up–In this first volume in a projected quartet, Croggon has created a world that is both authentic and exotic, welcoming and frightening. When 16-year-old Maerad meets a man named Cadvan, she is catapulted from her life as a slave to an epic destiny. Cadvan is a Bard, one of the magically gifted Starpeople, and he begins to teach her about her own gifts and abilities. He believes her to be the prophesied One who will oppose the Nameless, the dark power working toward the destruction of the Bards and the Balance of the world. As Maerad and Cadvan travel, they join forces with Hem, a mysterious orphan, and learn that the Nameless’s influence reaches far into the world of the Bards. Encounters with great mythic figures of their world and threatening evil forces add to the epic flavor of their journey. Maerad’s story is presented as a translation of the great epic of a lost civilization, and explanatory appendixes add to this fantasy’s realistic feel. Maerad is a strong, bold, and appealing character, and her lack of knowledge about her world provides a framework for Croggan’s background explanations. Supporting characters, including the Bards and those who oppose them, are given realistic traits and flaws. While some coincidences in the plot may stretch readers’ belief, they are integral to the story. Maerad seems a kindred spirit to Tamora Pierce’s Alanna, and her story will find a welcoming audience among readers looking for a challenging and fully realized epic adventure.

After all, they deserve their day in court too, right?

To do so, he must square off against a savvy and ambitious district attorney, contend with a judge who is deeply biased against arcanes, and stand up to a human-supremacist group which will stop at nothing — not even Hunter’s own death — to see his client convicted.

As Raj struggles to prepare himself and Emret for the inevitable, he’s confronted by Moslin, his son’s nurse, who’s been filling Emret’s head with fairytales about heroic quests and powerful disease curing miracles. Emret now thinks that all he has to do is find the mythical Red Tree from the nurse’s stories, and he’ll live.

In an attempt to protect his son from further emotional damage, Raj asks Moslin to stay away from Emret. He returns hours later to find them both missing.

Now, he has to dig into the loathed fairytales to figure out where they may have gone. He’d also like to know why he keeps blacking out and having visions of a temple on a mountain with a vat of glowing weapons, a vaporous black creature emerging from a lightning storm, himself in glowing armor leading an army, and the same mythical Red Tree hidden in a dense forest.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Racehorse trainer, Kurt MacKinnon, resents being yanked into undercover police work. But when his ex-partner is murdered, Kurt is determined to find the killer and moves his third-string Thoroughbreds to the backwater track where his partner was last seen alive.

Julie West, a struggling and dedicated jockey, pins her dreams of an elusive win on the new trainer in town, never suspecting she’s a person of interest–and not because of her riding skills.

Kurt didn’t expect his contrary colt to flourish under Julie’s feminine touch nor for his own rusty heart to soften. However, his deceit sucks them both into the cross hairs of a killer, and suddenly much more than their love is in danger.

Here’s another edition of the random blog post and a few answers to your questions…

Kindle Keyboard Giveaway

Tomorrow is the last day to sign up for the free Kindle Keyboard / Kindle 3, which I launched to promote the Kindle Books for a Buck (or Less) blog (you can click here or go to http://ebooksforabuck.wordpress.com to see this blog). The Kindle Books for a Buck (or Less) blog was designed to promote the many independent, self-published authors that typically fall under the radar screen amidst all of the noise from the “headline” authors I have really enjoyed. I think you will, also, and to me the purchase price of one dollar or less is a pretty easy price point vs. throwing down ten bucks or more for something untested. Hopefully, many of you have had a chance to check out some of the offerings of this blog.

As I type this post, there are almost 12,500 entries so far in the giveaway. You can enter once each day so if you haven’t signed up – or if you haven’t completed today’s entry – I encourage you to signup. To enter, just click here or you can go to your computer’s web browser and type in http://wp.me/p2b82w-2F9 and enter away!

Good luck!

Rock and Roll Rip-Off Freebie

This morning, I posted about the Rock and Roll Rip-Off book being free – you can click here or type in http://bit.ly/JuseYM into your computer’s web browser in case you missed it or want to see it again. I received a note that another book in the series, Rock and Roll Homicide, is also free from blog reader Penandra. Thanks for the update, Penandra, and if you would like the next book in that series you can click here or type in http://amzn.to/M8619z into your computer’s web browser.

Collections Question

Earlier this month, I had a post about how to organize your Kindle books into collections – you can click here or type in http://bit.ly/MYnyjS into your computer’s web browser in case you missed it or want to see it again. I received this note from William, as well as several other people along the same lines:

I can put books into collections, but the book also stays outside the collections. E.g., If I put “Rome” into the collection, “History,” then when I select History, Rome will show up. BUT Rome is also on the screen outside of the collection. How can I organize so the only thing on my home screen is the list of collections? And thanks for a great job on free books and tips!!

This happened to me when I first started organizing things into collections, and it drove me nuts until I was able to figure it out – I still had my collections shown on the Kindle, but I also had each and every book on my Kindle going on for page after page after page: all I wanted to see was the name of the collection!

It sounds like you need to just show all of your titles by collections: underneath the battery power status bar and the wireless signal bar of my Kindle Keyboard, yet above the first book or category name, your Kindle tells you how it is organizing your content. Your options are (a) Most Recent First, (b) Title, (c) Author, and (d) Collections. In order to arrange your books by the collection title(s) you have created, here is how you do it:

Click the Home button to go to the home screen.

Using your five-way controller click the “up” portion of the five-way controller one time until the “Showing All…” items has been highlighted – this should be the line-item immediately below the battery power status bar and the wireless signal bar of your Kindle.

Right-click the five-way controller one time to display the sorting options mentioned in (a) – (d) above.

Move your five-way controller to the “Collections” option, and select it by pressing the middle portion of your five-way controller.

Assuming you have organized your books into collections, all of the categorized books should now be in their respective category and the collection name / category should be all you see with a number in parenthesis of each collection name to let you know how many titles are in each category. If your Kindle is like mine, you will also have several books that haven’t been categorized yet immediately following all of the various Collections you have created.

Of course, you can use the same procedures to organize your content by author, etc.

Kindle Fire Stylus

I am looking to buy a stylus for my and my kids’ Kindle Fire, in the hope it will be a lot smoother – and less grimy – than my index finger. Has anyone tried out the Amazon Basics’ Style (click here or type in http://amzn.to/firestylus into your computer’s web browser)? If you have, and care to share the good and the bad before I drop $33 for three of them, I’d appreciate your thoughts – just use the comment form at the bottom of this post the blog’s web page.
Reader Survey

I’m almost done going through the results of the reader survey – while seeing the multiple choice answer results is fairly easy, what is taking me some time is reading (and hopefully understanding correctly) the additional comments many of you put in the narrative sections. I’ll be sending out the results to each of you via a blog post over the weekend. For those of you who took the time to share your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions I appreciate it!

Anyway, that’s all for now – I hope each of you have a great rest of the week!

Michael

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is The Last Good Day, a mystery / thriller by Peter Blauner, and is normally $10.09 in the Amazon Kindle Store but has been discounted to just $1.99 for today only. It has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 32 customer reviews, and you can pick up your copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/kddeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

When a decapitated corpse washes up on the banks of the Hudson River, a New York suburb is sent into an uproar

Commuters waiting for the morning train into Manhattan in the small Hudson River town of Riverside are the first to see the body. She drifts out of the river, naked and headless, shocking the onlookers before they board their train to work.

Riverside Police Chief Harold Baltimore can’t get away from her so easily. A black chief in a white town, he’s new to his job and not at all sure he’s suited to it. At first it looks like a routine mob murder, but when one of his detectives identifies the corpse as a local woman, the news rocks quiet little Riverside—and the town won’t ever be quiet again.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Peter Blauner including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Jason Duffy thought he had accepted a routine burglary case when a career studio musician hired him to recover a memorabilia collection featuring unusual treasures from some of the top performers in the music industry. But Jason quickly finds himself at the top of a hit list that has nothing to do with The Top 40 and everything to do with a table for one at the San Diego Coroner’s Office.

While the facts of the case point to an emo band that the victim was helping at the time of the theft, the lethal force that Jason encounters in his investigation feels more like death metal. He finds himself imperiled by a hitman known as The Heartbreaker, due to his signature of shooting his victims through the heart at close range. With danger also threatening his staff and girlfriend, Jason must continue to mend fences with his retired police detective father, in spite of a recent riff that caused a major setback to their relationship.

Everyone thought The Tactile Tattoo was a “can’t miss” band. The pre-release buzz for their first CD was tremendous. But a bad review from a key industry critic, who didn’t care for their lyrics, left the album stillborn at record stores across the country.

The group soon learned that second chances in the current state of the music business are practically nonexistent. One band member discovered that money talks in an industry strapped for cash, and a bribe was entirely possible. However, funding that bribe meant getting involved with all of the wrong people.

In the midst of this action whodunit, the reader is treated to an insider’s view of the music industry that captures the new obstacles that today’s bands must overcome in order to succeed. Some musicians handle the pressures, opportunities, and disappointments more effectively than others. Some still succumb to the mesmerizing allure of sex and drugs and rock & roll.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

THE HISTORY: Over five thousand years ago, a renegade faction of angels abandoned the spiritual realm and began their inhabitation of earth. Worshiped as gods for their wisdom and power, they corrupted the realm of the physical and forever altered the course of history.

THE PROPHECY: Amidst the chaos of a dying world, a lone voice foretold the awakening of a warrior who would bring an end to this evil perpetrated against all of creation. But with the cataclysmic destruction of earth and rebirth of humanity, the prophecy went unfulfilled and eventually faded from the memory of our kind—until now!

THE AWAKENED: The physical dimension is fractured. What remain now are numerous fragmented worlds moving simultaneously through time, sharing a common history, connected only by a guarded portal. On a parallel earth, in the city of Bastul, Colonel Adair Lorus disappears while investigating the death of an informant, triggering a series of events which will tear his family apart and set in motion the resolution of an ancient struggle. Kael, sentenced to death after rising up against the cruel leadership of his new step-father, is rescued from prison and trained in the arts of war by a mystical order of clerics. Excelling in every aspect of his training, Kael inwardly struggles to give himself fully to the methods of his new family, or the god they worship. Maeryn, bitter over the disappearance of her husband and supposed execution of her son, fears for her life at the hands of her newly appointed husband. Finding comfort and purpose in her unborn child, she determines to undermine his authority by reaching out to an underground social movement known as the Resistance. After being forced from his home, Kael’s former mentor, Saba, uncovers a clue to Adair’s disappearance. Sensing a connection to his own forgotten past, Saba begins an investigation which leads to the discovery of a secret military organization operating within the Orudan Empire.

In book one of his debut series, Jason Tesar delves into the heart of an ancient legend, embarking on an epic saga that will journey from earth’s mythological past to its post-apocalyptic future, blending the genres of fantasy, sci-fi, and military/political suspense.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

In a work that beautifully demonstrates the rewards of closely observing nature, Elisabeth Bailey shares an inspiring and intimate story of her uncommon encounter with a Neohelix albolabris -a common woodland snail.

While an illness keeps her bedridden, Bailey watches a wild snail that has taken up residence on her nightstand. As a result, she discovers the solace and sense of wonder that this mysterious creature brings and comes to a greater under standing of her own confined place in the world.

Intrigued by the snail-s molluscan anatomy, cryptic defenses, clear decision making, hydraulic locomotion, and mysterious courtship activities, Bailey becomes an astute and amused observer, providing a candid and engaging look into the curious life of this underappreciated small animal.-

Told with wit and grace, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a remarkable journey of survival and resilience, showing us how a small part of the natural world illuminates our own human existence and provides an appreciation of what it means to be fully alive.

Each day, Amazon offers a free Android App of the Day that could be a game, utility, or who knows? Each deal lasts for just 24 hours and, after that period is over it goes back to paid status and a new app is the App of the Day. To me, some of these apps are great and others I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole – on the other hand, those I think are great might have no interest to you at all and the ones I wouldn’t dare try is something that would really interest you. In other words, an app’s beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Besides, if you don’t like it after getting it you can always delete it and have now worries whatsoever – after all, it was free!

In addition to your Kindle Fire, these apps will also work with your Android-based smartphones and tablet computers.

Today’s App of the Day is First Puzzles HD Pro and is normally $1.99 in the Amazon App Store. You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://tinyurl.com/appdeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the app’s description from the Amazon App Store website:

Fun Puzzles for Young Minds

Clever Kids First Puzzles HD Pro is a fun and simple educational game for children from 2 to 10 years old. Kids will learn new words, shapes, and correct spellings as they explore such exciting places as the farm, the ocean, and the world of the dinosaur.

Playing is simple: drag the pieces of each puzzle around to create a picture, and fill in the animals that inhabit each scene. This app will also help your child spell each word.

Choose from 3 fun puzzle environments

On the Farm, Under the Sea, or Back in Time

Kids can choose from three fun puzzle worlds to work in. Down on the farm, familiar characters like cows, pigs, and hens are waiting to be placed in their correct puzzle positions. In the ocean, you’ll find lots of friendly undersea creatures like an octopus, crab, starfish, and sea turtle.

And if you’re feeling especially brave, go back in time to the domain of the dinosaurs! This prehistoric world features a smiling Stegosaur, affable Apatosaurus, and remarkably un-scary Tyrannosaurus Rex, along with several other lovable dinos.

Whichever puzzle your child decides to work first, she or he is sure to have fun. Get started now and see which puzzle becomes your kid’s favorite!

Unless Michael Resnick, founder of one of the largest political movements in the US, the American Coalition for Life, can stop him. The ACL’s attempts range from simple legal actions to terrorist acts to covert abortion squads.

And caught in the middle are a group of people as diverse and unlikely as you will find: a scientist torn between two faiths, a talk show host crawling out of the media sewer, a writer in love, a cartoonist with the darkest of secrets, a fallen priest, and a skinhead graced by God.

Secrets spanning centuries will be uncovered. Life-long beliefs and dreams will be shaken, challenged and destroyed.

It is a story of what may be the greatest event or failure in the history of mankind; a story of sacrifice, horror, faith, betrayal and love.

“Let us not forget it was a holy war, and like all wars, it was bloody.”

Today’s App of the Day is Bedside Alarm Clock and is normally $1.99 in the Amazon App Store. You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://tinyurl.com/appdeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the app’s description from the Amazon App Store website:

Your alarm clock shouldn’t just be an alarm clock anymore. With the Bedside Alarm Clock app, your Android device can double as your new-and-improved, feature-packed, wake-up call. Fall asleep and wake up to your favorite music and enjoy a gorgeous LED display, among many other features that your old alarm clock could only dream of.

Customize Your Clock

It could be the last thing you see before you drift off to sleep, so you should at least like the way it looks. The Bedside Alarm Clock app has a stylish LED display with customizable LED color. Display the day of the week, and choose to use a 12-or 24-hour time display. Additionally, it looks great in either portrait or landscape orientation.

As you drift off to sleep, play music from your music library or choose from five relaxing soundtracks. Set the timer to play the sleep- inducing sounds for up to three hours.

Wakey, Wakey

Just as pleasantly as it sends you off to sleep, it should wake you from your peaceful slumber. Choose from 14 high-quality alarm sounds, or use a song from your music library. Set unlimited, customizable repeatable alarms. For those notorious for accidentally turning off their alarm, the slide stop helps to prevent over-sleeping. Don’t worry, you can always use the snooze button, and set the duration for your preference.

The miracles and the subtle magic of childhood go mostly unnoticed as the friends embrace fate and are forced to come to terms with The Bones of Boulder Creek.

Written to be enjoyed by both adults and young adults, The Bones of Boulder Creek takes an unsparing look at the trials of coming of age and provides perspective to the story of growing up.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

God has offered us firsthand knowledge of His love, His grace, and His power. Yet so often, we too easily settle for someone else’s descriptions, the Cliff notes from another’s spiritual journey. We are content for “God-experts” to do the heavy lifting and then give us the bottom line. And like any secondhand information, after enough times through the grapevine, the truth about God deteriorates and crumbs of rumor are all that remain.

But when life derails, and things don’t go as we had planned, our thin view of God is challenged. In those critical moments, we can choose to walk away from God, or to let our questions lead us home. When we choose to wrestle with God, to engage Him for ourselves, we-like Jacob and Job and David-will see rumors die and revelation come alive.

It’s time to hear the magnificent, Divine Invitation. It’s time to take God up on His offer and embrace the mystery and majesty of knowing Him for ourselves.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

The truth can be a dangerous thing.

Terrorism, duty, and personal safety collide when Jake Pendleton, an investigator for the NTSB, is called to investigate an aircraft accident in Savannah, Georgia during the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The accident, which at first appears to be quite run-of-the-mill, turns out to be anything but. Since Jake is not willing to pretend there are no suspicious circumstances and more than the usual share of rather unlikely “coincidences,” he sets off a veritable avalanche of secrets, violence and treachery. Aided by an unlikely partner, Gregg Kaplan, the air traffic controller who was the last person in contact with the airplane that crashed, Jake sets out to untangle the webs of deceit and to find a vicious killer.

Nothing is as it seems, nobody is who you thought them to be.
Nothing is sacred.
Nobody is safe.

Diary of the Displaced: The Journal of James Halldon by Glynn James has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 57 customer reviews.

Category: Horror

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

There is a place where nightmares are real. It is a dark and terrifying place, hidden from the world we know, by borders that only the most unfortunate of souls will ever cross.

James Halldon woke up in the dark, alone, without any food or water, without a clue where he was, and with no memory of where he came from.

It only got stranger.

For James has somehow found his way to The Corridor. A place where zombies stumble in the darkness, ever seeking the flesh and blood of the living. A midnight land where tentacled behemoths spawn in the fetid swamps. Nightmares that no human should ever see. The prison of a creature that has destroyed entire worlds.

Somehow James has to learn to survive. But he is not alone. The lost souls of others who have drifted into this infernal place and died, also haunt this world. Trapped forever in the afterlife.

They have been waiting a long time for someone to come along.

Anyone.

“Of all the places I had to end up, it had to be here.”

The Journal of James Halldon is a dark fantasy novel (with occasional humour) and the first in a series of interconnected dark tales. The novel follows Halldon’s struggle to survive whilst trying to understand the strange, dark, and terrifying world in which he is trapped.

If it’s dark when you wake up, and you can hear growling, then close your eyes and maybe it will go away.

But maybe it won’t…
