BURTON -- Council candidates support building a Cancer Survivor Park, a plan put forth by Mayor Charles Smiley. But the eight candidates running in Tuesday's election -- of whom voters will choose four to represent them -- diverge on whether to spend taxpayer money to build the park. A proposal to spend $4,800 on architectural plans for the park, which might include a fountain, statues, trails, and inspirational messages, has been tabled three times by the City Council. It could cost about $100,000 to build the park, supporters say, but much of that is expected to be donated....

BURTON -- If Councilwoman Laurie Tinnin wins next week's mayoral election, she would, indeed, be a rare bird: a longtime critic who wins the top job in local government. Vocal critics are the residents who elicit eye-rolling from elected officials. They're the type to get escorted from the meeting by police, as Tinnin once was. In the rare times they do win, being the top dog can be difficult for critics, who definitely do not like being referred to as "gadflies."...

BURTON -- The campaign spending is nearly tied in the race to determine who will be the mayor of the second-largest city in Genesee County. Councilwoman Laurie Tinnin, who is trying to unseat four-term Mayor Charles Smiley in the Nov. 6 election, said she expects to spend about $15,000. The Smiley camp estimates it will spend less than $20,000. According to the latest campaign finance reports, both camps have spent about $3,000 through Oct. 21....

FENTON -- A challenger said he offers a "fresh" perspective, while three incumbents tout their experience in this year's City Council race. The candidates -- Ed Angeluski, Tim Faricy, Cheryl King, and John Rauch -- are vying for three four-year seats in the Nov. 6 election. Sue Osborn is also on the ballot, running unopposed for another two-year term as mayor. The jobs won't be easy with simmering tension about the city's water system, and tough budget questions ahead on how to repair long-neglected infrastructure and pay for more than $650,000 in unexpected costs related to the Aug. 24 tornado....
