Can Cinnamon Powder Help Get Rid of Acne?

Living in busy Metropolitan Manila can be very stressful. With hectic schedules, endless traffic, and pervasive air pollution, it’s not uncommon for many of us to suffer from acne breakouts and bumpy skin. The combination of dust and dirt, as well as some hormonal issues, can make acne persistent, painful, and extremely uncomfortable.

If you’re like me and have tried almost every anti-acne soap, cream, and treatment available on store shelves, what’s left is to explore other less conventional methods for treatment, one of them being cinnamon.

The basics

First let’s discuss what cinnamon is. Although not quite as common here in the Philippines, there’s still a good number of delicacies that uses the spice, most notably cinnamon rolls. Plus, considering the country is at the top spot in terms of social media usage, you’ve probably heard or seen some of those Cinnamon Challenge videos, which went viral in recent years.

Often found in stick, powder, or dried flower form, cinnamon is made from the inner bark of several tree species belonging to the genus Cinnamomum. The spice has largely been used as a versatile and powerful ingredient for both savory and sweet dishes.

What’s less known, however, is that it was even used in odd ways, such as a perfuming agent for the dead. In the post 'What Happens When You Eat Cinnamon' by Foxy Bingo it revealed that ancient Egyptians applied the spice in their embalming process. Fortunately, such practices have long died out as well, and cinnamon is now exclusively used for the living.

The good

The best thing about cinnamon is that it has many health benefits. A recent survey of medical literature by BioMed Central explores all the ways of how it has been utilized to treat a wide variety of digestive, respiratory, and gynecological conditions.

Cinnamon has been known to have anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic and anti-oxidant properties in other animals. It can also aid in lowering blood glucose, blood pressure, as well as serum cholesterol, and has wound-healing attributes.

Because of the many health benefits of cinnamon – most notably the first two mentioned above – it’s not surprising that people have developed a number of home remedies against acne using cinnamon as a main ingredient. It can be used in tandem with honey, lemon, nutmeg, or aloe vera to make masks, or prepared as an organic additive to tea. Michelle Phan shared a simple guide on making a cinnamon and honey mask.

The not so good

Although there are established home remedies using cinnamon to combat acne, there hasn’t been much clinical research to prove and document its effectiveness against the skin condition. MedicalNewsToday still recommends seeing a dermatologist for acne problems and checking first for any risks or allergies before attempting to use a cinnamon mask.

If you’re looking to try out a cinnamon mask soon, it’s important to always test your mixture on a small patch on your hand for any bad reactions at least a day before applying it on your face. This is because cinnamon can cause redness and irritation on the skin, as well as more severe problems like difficulty swallowing, hives, or shortness of breath for those who are allergic to it.

Now back to the question: Can cinnamon powder help get rid of acne? Maybe. Maybe not. But one thing's for sure: It has the potential because of its benefits. While researchers have yet to give us a definitive conclusion, there are some who have already tried it. If you’re one of them, be sure to tell us how it went!

This is a tablet that can morph from Windows OS to Android! It can fit in my purse and can act as my second work station. Something I can bring with my anytime, anywhere, just in case I have important work, or I am inspired to write a blog! Fascinating!

Here's what I love about the Chuwi Vi8.

1. It can from Windows 8 to Android Kit Kat and vice versa.
2. Windows 8 is upgradeable to Windows 10. Although I don't recommend this because I did try to update but it did not work smoothly. The touch screen was not responsive when I updated and I had to use a mouse to maneuver the tablet to restore it to factory settings.
3. Light and compact, with the tablet weighing only 310 grams or 0.68 lbs. With packaging, it weighs 1.097 kb.
4. It's only about 8" x 4" and can fit in my usual bags. It's like an iPad mini but way lighter.
5. Expandable memory (via TF/micro SD card) of up to 64 GB, but I tried my 128 GB, and it seems to be working.
6. Decent battery time time.

Here are some things the Chuwi Vi8 can improve on.

1. Bigger internal memory (ROM) for more fun apps to install. It has a big potential to do so many things because it is Windows, it is just limited by the internal memory. I am able to survive with what I have by uninstalling apps I don't need and use just chrome browser for most things. With Chrome browser, you can use Google docs.
2. Better camera. I was not expecting the best, but the camera was something I would not bother using.
3. New version with Windows 10!

I was deeply involved in a conversation with friends when I realized that I am lucky I was able to live the prime years of my life in this century. This is the time when technology and creativity meet to fit my wants and needs in my lifestyle. I am a licensed CPA and I do obsess with numbers and analytics. I am also a Pole Fitness instructor and just a general health and fitness buff. Science and numbers fascinate me, and a few years back I struggled to measure my progress and my goals because I did not have the means to do so. All I could do before is count my steps manually (as in, in my head) because when I was younger I did not have even a pedometer with me.

It's such a great time because now, there are lots of gadgets that I could use to track, analyze and be better to achieve my personal goals.

I have received a Fitbit Flex for me to review and here are the things logged down after using it for 1 week!

What's in the box?

If you have seen my unboxing video, you will notice that I struggled a little in opening the box. At least you know that when you buy it, it should be sealed tightly as so. Here are the things you can find inside the Fitbit Flex box

What is the Fitbit Flex wristband made of?

I am quite sensitive to a lot of things, metal, dirt, dust, and so many other things that wearing a watch is kind of tricky for me. I was worried that when I start to sweat with the Flex wristband, that I would start to itch, but I didn't! I wear it with me all the time when I take a stroll in the mall, when I go to the gym and when I warm-up my pole class.

The Flex wristband is made of flexible, durable elastomer material. Most sports watches usually use this material. It has a surgical-grade stainless steel clasp to secure the band to your wrist.

I'm glad that the designers thought about this so I can wear it for longer periods of time. Sometimes I forget that it's there and I can sleep through without it bugging me.

Operating temperature is 4° to 113°F
Maximum operating altitude is 30,000 feet
Flex tracks data for 7 days of detailed motion data, minute by minute
Tracks daily totals for the past 30 days.
During the day, it tracks steps, distance, and calories burned.
At night, it tracks sleep quantity and you can set it to wake you up silently in the morning. It works when you sleep with another person and you don't want to use the sound alarm to disturb them.
You can encode your personal stats and set goals, and the app will do all the tracking work for you.
Set goals, log food, see progress, analyze trends and earn achievement badges through your mobile and online dashboard.
Share and compete with friends and family on the leaderboard and in NEW Fitbit challenges.

Battery

The battery used is a Lithium-polymer. Charging time is 1 to 2 hours only and the battery life can last for 5 days. (In my case, it was able to hold charge for 7 days.

Fitbit Flex syncs automatically and wirelessly to smartphones, tablets and computers. It can work with Android, Windows and iOS mobile phones using wireless technology.

Caring for Fitbit Band and Helpful Tips

Keep the band dry and clean.
If the band gets weat, remove completely and dry before putting it back on. Moisture breeds bacteria and germs.
Clean the wrist band with a mild soap-free solution like Cetaphil or Aquanil, rinse throughly and again, let dry
Rest your wrist by taking off the band once in a while.
Charge accordingly. Unlike other wearable watches, the Fitbit Flex can be used for 5 days on full charge. That's what was said on their official website, but I was able to use it for 7 days, because I forgot the charging wire and I was out of town.

Pros and Cons

Packaging is good and well-sealed. However, it was little bit hard to open. On the good side, you will know that the band is really secure and you should not worry about it slipping off your wrist and lose it. As for the wrist band, it was hard for me to snap the wristband to my wrist upon initial use. I guess the rubber needs to be warmed up. Suggestion, warm up the wrist lock by locking and unlocking it a few times before using it.

What I love about Fitbit Flex is that it is stylish enough to be worn with my other accessories. Unlike the other fit bands that I use, the design is sleek, simple and not as attention-grabbing as its other sibling models that have a huge screen or watch.

It fits perfectly and I love wearing it!

Hello online blog! :)

It's 2:32 am and I can't sleep. Insomnia. Hyperactive brain. Social media distractions. Back in May 2008 (when I first started my blog), I would write and talk about what happened during my day - just like a diary. The difference is, there's no secret lock or secret text codes (I do have a secret language only I can understand lol), the world can see my thoughts and my brain farts, like this one you are reading.

What is so interesting about my life? Pretty much the same as you. I believe that each one of us has our own story unique to our own. Mine is mostly all about my curiosity, dreams and passion. To some, it could be all about just daily struggles or the lack of it. Whatever it is, I'm 100% sure you have a story to tell. Something just unique to you. Write it down on a blog like me and find people who are attracted to your uniqueness and follow you. Who knows? Or not. Maybe you're secretive or you just don't care.

Just do one thing that scares you, or something that's outside of your comfort zone. You will be surprised how your story could evolve.

Two words that gave birth to my blog. I'm on my 7th year of blogging now. I've been on a hiatus a few times. The one thing I like about my blogging is that there really is no pressure at all. I share what I can and I hope to inspire people to become their best selves.

My Search for the best Lifestyle Program

I have always been looking for a lifestyle program (not diet program) that will totally give me a healthy and fit physique, but also sustainable. Sustainable in a sense that it does not make me depressed or cause a certain imbalance in other aspects of my being.

Ever since February, I stopped eating meat (beef, pork chicken) and decided to have a pescatarian diet (veggies, seafood and eggs). This is because for some reason, my nosebleed is triggered by eating meat.

I thought I would lose weight, because after all, I gave up meat as a part of my diet. I only lost around 2-3 lbs in 3 months. Not much progress.

Metabolic Hack

Then, I discovered this new program from a friend who taught me the ways. I realized, the most effective way to lose weight is to target your metabolic rate. No matter how calories you take, it won't matter if your metabolism is slow. In fact, starving yourself or restricting your calories could make your metabolism slower.

Carb Cycling and Good Bye Sugar (except on cheat days)

This is just a disclaimer to tell you what kind of lifestyle program I am in before I tell you about my MySlim review. I just started doing this early May 2015 and I lost 10 pounds in one month. All I had to do is give up sugar, starch and bad carbs. A lot of people, though wanting to lose weight, are not willing to give up on these. It actually takes will power and commitment to do this and to achieve great results.

Carb Cycling is alternating low-carb and high carb days in a week, plus one cheat day (mine is Sunday). High carb day would only allow good carbs (slow-burning, low GI carbs - so yeah, still no rice). I combine this with at least 3x of gym time a week.

This is where MySlim Capsules and MySlim Yerba mate comes to a good cause, it complements my lifestyle program and when I learned about this product I got excited because of the many features it has all in one capsule and all in one drink.

Weighing down is not actually my goal. My goal is to feel more fit and good. To fit nicely with clothes, to feel awesome! I just weighed myself so that I have a basis on how I am losing pounds with this product. I am also building muscle mass while losing stored energy (a.k.a. fat). So if I just look at weight, it might not be accurate. A more accurate measurement is to get your muscle mass, you can have this done in your gym if they have the equipment.

The Verdict

MySlim Capsules and MySlim Yerba Mate drink works for me and it complements the current lifestyle program I am in. Again, if you are worried about any side effects, allergies or dangers of trying this product, just consult a doctor and make sure you are not taking medication that would react to this. Otherwise, this product did a great job for me! You may not have the same result as I have, but again this will work best if you have your own diet/lifestyle program.

There is actually a tendency for me to feel tired and fatigued when I do carb cycling because my body keeps on burning fat, sometimes my body overheats. I just need to shower and drink cold water. But with Yerba Mate, Green Tea extract and L-Carnitine, plus the carb-blocking powers of Garcinia Cambogia, it allows me to use my stored energy efficiently.

This may be one reason I was able to attend the Yanis Marshall dance workshop for 6 hours straight!

Batanes - North Tour, Day 1

Last year, I won a contest hosted by Solar Entertainment and Jack City. I joined the contest with my dear friend and fellow Smart Ambassador - Ynnah. I won tickets to Coron but just a few days before our trip flights were canceled and we chose to fly to Batanes instead.

I was very excited! Coron and Batanes are my 2 dream destinations in the Philippines. Coron, wait for me I'll come back for you!

So we flew to Batanes at 5:30am and we arrived in Basco, Batanes at 6:45am. It was a good flight, actually I don't know coz I slept the entire time from the moment we left Terminal 4. Lucky I woke up just right, and I woke up greeted by clouds everywhere and suddenly, the clouds cleared and I was greeted by this!

Our landing was good and I really appreciated the top view of the island. We were seated at the right side of the plane (E and F) so reserve these window seats if your Basco bound.

The Basco airport is one of the prettiest, most humble airport I have ever seen! It's really tiny, not much going on but it is beautiful! It's like the Shire's airport, if Shire exists in modern times. The weather was cool at 20-22 degrees Celsius. We were lucky the weather is nice! Sun was shining bright, cool breeze and the view was amazing!

We looked for our sundo but couldn't find our names. So we decided to just commute to our hotel Batanes Seaside. We went out of the airport there were no tricycles. We asked the guard and they said there's a tricycle terminal down the street. Since the weather is nice, we decided to just walk. A few meters forward and we asked the people living nearby if they know the direction to our hotel. They told us it was just 1 kilometer away. We decided to walk! After all, a little bit of exercise is good. Just then, a van stopped right before us and it read Batanes Seaside! They were looking for us apparently there was just a confusion. All good! This place has a certain magnetic field turning everyone's energy to calm and serene.

Currently Skyjet and Philippine Airlines have direct flights from Manila to Basco, Batanes. If you book really early, you could get tickets at Php 7,000. If you need to book immediately (say next weekend or this month), it could cost around 15k or more.

If you're on a budget, you might want to stay in Ivana at Villa Bella. It only costs Php 250 per person a night. This will be a homestay type and you'll have a fan room - but you don't really need airconditioning in Batanes, the weather is really comfortable there especially during February. Just contact Ching +63 929 443 6866. She said airport transfer from the airport is around Php 750 for a van and Php 220 for a tricyle.

Batanes Tours

There are really no public transportation (except for tricycles around Basco) as you would see locals either walking or riding bikes. You can hire a car or a van to go around the city or arrange for tours at Php 2,000 for North Basco tour and Php 3,000 for South tour.

1. Valugan Boulder beach

The Valugan Boulder Beach can be found in the East side of Batan island. Nothing much to see but enjoy the view, the natural formation of the rocks and enjoy the cool breeze.

2. Japanese tunnel

These tunnels functioned as Japanese hideouts before. Japanese officials even have their own room somewhere inside - yes we went inside from one end to another! And we had to do a mini - "hike" because there were stairs made of dried mud. It was really dark inside and I tried not to panic!

3. Idjang

Our next stop was the viewing of Idjang Savidug stone fortress. Our tour guide during this day, Kuya Julian, told us that this is the stone fortress of the native Ivatans around 4000 BC. That was a very very long time ago. Ivatans then took abode in this place for defensive shelter. This stone fortress has a good angle or viewpoint where they can spot any enemies coming near.

4. PAGASA weather station

The islands of Batanes, knowing that it is surrounded by big bodies of water like the Pacific Ocean and South China sea, are prone to typhoons visiting by. This PAGASA station helps the locals to predict and prepare for a storm.

5. Mt. Carmel Chapel

This is one beautiful church that kuya said, many went here to get married. How can you not fall in love with this place? It is situated by a hill and you have a good view of the area around.

6. Lighthouse

We went to 2 lighthouses in Batanes. One was found in the North. Climb up the tower and you will see a great view of Basco.

7. Rolling hills

This is probably one of the scariest walks we ever had in Batanes. The path is narrow and steep. You can really see where you're gonna fall if you're not careful! We asked our guide if someone had ever fallen and "rolled" down the hills. Fortunately, he said no ever did! :P

Yesterday, I drove down south for our launch in 360 Fitness Plus Alabang! I was coding so I drove there way early (before 3pm). I stayed in UCC at Westgate Center to work a little.

I love this place! It was just a quick trip because I took the Skyway from EDSA. Once you get down the Alabang exit, just turn left to find Westgate Center. It looks like Pleasantville! You can park your car by the street and parking fee is just affordable! For 7 hours, I only paid P45! :)

We prepared for our launch that happened yesterday, February 10 by giving out goodies to the ones who will be attending our launch trial classes. Thank you to our sponsors for supporting our pole passion!

Hello MacBook Air, Unboxing and Why I Buy Apple Products

So, I used to be a proud owner of a MacBook Pro 13', but when we went to Boracay and I had to bring it for work, I felt it was too heavy for my traveling lifestyle. I decided to downgrade (or upgrade?) to the lightest MacBook I can find - the 11' MacBook Air 2014 model.

This time, I bought it from Power Mac in Rockwell. I got it for 44,900. A worthy investment, I'm sure this will last me 10 years if I really take good care of it.

Why I love Apple products?

I used to hate them, really like why would I buy an overpriced gadget when I could by a similar device that could function the same at a price way lower than that of Apple?

When I bought my MacBook Pro and used it for 3 years, and when I bought my first iPhone about 4 years ago, that's when I realized that I am paying for durability. I used to buy non-Apple laptops, they would function well for 1 year, and then I will encounter problems (lag, freezing, blue screen, cd/dvd-rom not working anymore, sounds got busted etc).

When I had my MacBook Pro, I never had problems at all and it's the only laptop I used for 3 years! The only problem I used to have was that it lagged when I updated it to the latest software. I just think it's because of the VirtualBox I installed and when I used it, it would lag. VirtualBox is where I installed a Windows Operating System. Yes, you can install a Windows OS if you want (only recommended if your Mac can take it. 8GB ram would be no problem!

Goodbye MacBook Pro

I had separation anxiety with this one! I had to give it to a new home :) It works really well especially that I reformatted it like brand new. It doesn't lag anymore of course because I did not install Windows anymore. It's still beautiful and I did not want to let it go... but what would I do with 2 MacBooks?

It is perfect when I travel, or when I just go to the gym and work at a coffee shop after.

I stayed in Malaysia for about 11 days in total just this November. This is the longest stay I've had in a foreign country. Come to think of it, Malaysia is not so foreign for me anymore, I think I visit, or stop by this country for at least 2x a year - either for business, or lay-over or just visit friends.

Nevertheless, any traveler needs a good place to stay. I have always done my bookings via Agoda.com. It's just the most convenient online booking tool that I use for a lot of reasons.

3 Hotels I stayed

Ibis Styles KL

Ibis Styles is a chain of hotels located worldwide, and Ibis Styles KL is among the biggest in the Asia Pacific. It has about 500 rooms to accommodate business and leisure travelers. This would be good for company trips, in case you are planning one for your company!

Transportation

The biggest advantage to this hotel is that it is easily connected to an LRT line. If you don't like riding trains, they also have a free shuttle service to Suria KLCC (Petronas Twin Towers) and Pavillion Shopping Mall is available at 11:00 AM and 12:00 noon. If you need to go somewhere at anytime, you can book a taxi or a hotel van service through the reception. Price for the taxi or van will range from MYR 25 to MYR 60, depending on the type of shuttle (taxi or van) and the destination area. MYR 25 could take you to Bukit Bintang area. This is good if you are sharing with other people and split the fare. But, if you're riding solo and you want a little bit of walking exercise, you can still opt for the LRT. MYR 3 could already take you to KLCC (Petronas Twin Towers) or KL Sentral (train to airport).

Taking a taxi from the hotel to the airport would cost about MYR 90.

Attractions nearby

For sightseeing options and local attractions, one need not look far as the hotel enjoys close proximity to Pudu Market, Choon Wan Kong, the World’s Longest Mural and much more. Jalan Alor is just 10-15 minutes away by taxi.

Jalan Alor - Hawker style, street food, and also a tourist spot. If at midnight you crave for some food, just get a cab, go to this place, and feast your eyes, and belly!

Hotel Interior and Facilities

Ibis Styles Kl Fraser Business Hotel is an added testament to the new concept of economy hotel with its new contemporary and vibrantly designed rooms. The hotel décor is playing with designers colors, emphasizing on unique design and happy mood on every floor. The hotel has a restaurant, sTREATs, with an open concept kitchen, a trendy bar, 4 meeting rooms, kid’s corner, interactive corner, and a gym.

Great food selection for their breakfast buffet, which was already included in our hotel booking!

They also have a Kids Corner, a playground, gym, meeting rooms and interactive center.

Hotel Rooms

We got a twin room, complete with basic toiletries and mini-pantry with complimentary water, coffee, tea and water heater. The room has a wall mounted TV with some basic cable TV channels. Our room had a comfy couch too!

We stayed in a standard twin room.

They have a working table, which was very helpful for me because I had to bring work with me while traveling.

Complimentary water, coffee and tea!

You can even request an iPod dock :)

Bathroom / Toilet Area

Some travelers are very particular about the bathroom area of their room. Me, I just want it clean - like the one we had in our room!

Our sink, which also had basic toiletries. If you are missing any, you can just request for one via housekeeping. The toilet has a little window where you can get natural light during the day.

Toilet area is separate from the shower area :)

Did I say good natural light by day? Yes I did, but I'm saying it again - good for selfies... or more importantly, when you do your morning routine (shave, put makeup etc.)

Restaurants Nearby

Apart from sTreats which can be found on the 4th floor of the hotel, there are also other restaurants within the vicinity. The nearest one is Old Town Coffe, then there are other Indian, Malaysian and Chinese restaurants nearby. They also have 7/11 just across the street and KKMart where you can buy groceries. At night, there's also a shabu-shabu/hot pot style food card/street food just right in front of 7/11.

Can I just say, this is my happiest place in Makati? Century Mall just opened this 2014 and ever since, I've been going here from time to time. And now that it's Christmas, they made the mall even happier!

Century City Mall serves up a host of treats to make your Holiday celebration a truly special and memorable one. Head on to the Mall of Modern Makati at the corner of Salamanca St. and Kalayaan Avenue and experience the best shopping and dining destinations in the area that will give you more reasons to #LoveChristmas!

I love how I can go around the mall to shop, and get stuff I need for my work, gadgets, pole outfits. They have grocery, lots of crowd-favorite restaurants, cinema and they even have a new high-end food court type called "Hole in the Wall." It really is! Because I have not heard of these restaurants, even their food concepts and I was like a child walking around Disneyland when I discovered this place!

Christmas treats and traditions

For starters, get the chance to meet Kris Kringle himself as he roams the five-level mall every Sunday of November and December. Santa will be giving away gifts from Century City Mall's generous tenants. Random shoppers will receive Holiday treats as Santa spreads the Christmas cheer from floor to floor. Joining him is a special helper-a "reindeer dog", which will be accepting donations in behalf of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

The festive spirit continues over to the 4th level al fresco area where a giant Snow Globe awaits.

Also at the 4th level is Century City Mall's #LoveChristmas tree all adorned with elegant decor. Enjoy this wonderful sight as well as the mall's daily fountain show at 12 noon, 6 PM, and 8 PM.

Don't miss out on the carols as performed by non-profit organizations Handog ng Pagmamahal and Sheavers Associations at basement 1 every Sunday until the last Sunday of December.

Century City Mall also holds a regular Sunday Mass at 11 AM at its Event Center at the 5th level.

Y-Loft Hotel in Chai Wan Hong Kong

Finding the best hotel for you in Hong Kong could be a little bit tricky. It's a very busy city full of tourists all year-round, hotels can be found left and right. We booked via Agoda.com and it was simply a breeze. I could filter and sort the hotels according to location and my budget. In the end, we decided to stay at Y-Loft Hotel.

Y-Loft hotel is in Chai Wan area. It is at the last station of the Central line.

It is conveniently situated near MRT station, malls and restaurants, clean room spacious for the usual Hostel rooms in HK. Separate toilet and shower which is rare for Hostel type accommodation.

Awesome! No problem with anything. Enjoyed the facilities, clean and spacious rooms. Though a bit far from central, it is still conveniently connected to chai wan station. I would book here again and recommend this to my friends and readers!

Book early and you get to chance upon Agoda discounted rates. Even at peak season, we were able to book at around Php 3000+ per night.

One of their dining areas that have comfy and stylish tables, microwave ovens, all surrounded by a fun interior. Look far back and you will see their fitness center.

Y-Loft Fitness Centre is open from 8am to 10pm

They also have a sky track which is conveniently located on the roof top!

The Oasis, found on the top floor where you can have space to maybe do yoga, pilates, tai chi etc. or even have a picnic!

They also have a Laundry area open from 8am - 10pm! How convenient is this?
