THE LAUNDRETTE SESSIONS (Documentary)

This film explores the social function of UK laundrettes in the 21st century by interviewing laundrette users of all ages and social backgrounds in laundrettes across Devon and Cornwall.

It is estimated that three quarters of laundrettes in the UK have closed down in the last 25 years. The first UK laundrette opened in 1949 in London and since then these washeries have provided fast and economical service to millions, have inspired films such as ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’ and have featured in long running soap-operas. But most importantly, they have offered a community service as social centres for an increasingly individualistic and virtual society.

To keep the privacy and anonymity of the interviewees, and to ‘help’ audiences listen without pre-conceived judgement, contributors’ identities are kept anonymous and the visual narration of the story is carried out by the colourful display of the very visually appealing tumble driers, laundry bags, huge washing machines spinning around colourful clothes and the huge variety of washing products on display.

Only people’s lower body parts are filmed (as if filmed from a washing-machine’s point of view). Original animation is used for the interview questions, as opposed to using a standard voice-over or a presenter and to add to the filmic experience and as an added story-telling device, CCTV footage of one of the laundrettes is used to show the location while it ‘sleeps’.

The film depicts compelling stories like the old widower who visits the laundrette to remind him of his wife, and light-hearted accounts like one of Maureen’s laundrette users stripping down to his underwear to wash the clothes he was wearing or Sammy’s wish to see the Queen walk through the Laundrette door.
