Part theatre and part scavenger hunt, the interactive performance adventure brings unsuspecting participants in direct contact with sleazy and surreal Hollywood types, performed by eerily dead-on professional actors. A southland spin-off of New York's original Accomplice, the Hollywood version is an essential experience for natives, longtime residents, and out-of-towners alike.

But scattered throughout the Asian galleries is a striking assortment of demonic, wrathful deities—figures that bare fangs, drink blood, wear garlands of severed heads or are surrounded by fiery haloes. Divine Demons: Wrathful Deities of Buddhist Art, an intimate exhibition of paintings, sculptures and ceremonial ritual objects from the Museum’s permanent collection, explores this fascinating theme.

This exhibition of close to 150 paintings, sculpture and photographs from the Norton Simon collections traces artistic engagements with portraiture following Ingres’s influence in the early to mid-19th century through to the present day, and examines why this genre, so seemingly laden with restrictions and expectations, appealed to some of the greatest avant-garde painters in the history of art. The exhibition includes such artists as Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, among many others.

The Oppenländer collection, which the Getty acquired in 2003, is remarkable for its cultural and chronological breadth. It includes works made in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Greek world, and the Roman Empire, and spans the entire period of ancient glass production, from its origins in Mesopotamia in about 2500 B.C. to Byzantine and Islamic glass of the eleventh century A.D.

Also notable in the Oppenländer collection is the variety of ancient glassmaking techniques, such as casting, core forming, mosaic, inflation, mold blowing, cameo carving, incisimg, and cutting. All these techniques are still used by glass artists today.

Molten Color: Glassmaking in Antiquity is on view at the Getty Villa, 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272.

Every time I open my music player, I find myself heading back to what I know best- Bright Eyes, Death Cab, or Radiohead. But if you told me you find Miike Snow’s “Faker” a definite song to repeat, I’d say a chance on Malbec is one worth taking. Think the mellow vibe, similar background, but with a touch of something that makes you feel like you want to be in a cozy home.

What’s so heart stealing about this band? Every song on their released free EPs, The Answering Machine, does not disappoint, especially if the listener is looking for some mellow vocals and guitar with a touch of synth. As the band created music, they released at the very same time. The Answering Machine EPs come in a series of 5 downloads, each with a little of the band’s personality shown with the tracks that are simply messages that would be left on, well, an answering machine. The full length album, Dawn of Our Age, does not fail either. Touches of trumpet even appear to semi-liven up the beat while maintaining the relatively slow and relaxing yet foot tapping beat.

These past few weeks I find myself listening to Malbec on the 24/7 basis. In the recent months the song “Summer” has skillfully made its way the top 25 played list on my music player. If there’s anything you get out of this summer, it’s finding enjoyment out of the little things of summer- popsicles, lazy days, or Malbec. - AW Music
LOUVER

Venice, CA -- LA Louver is pleased to present recent paintings, works on paper and a new suite of etchings by Tom Wudl. Wudl's new work is inspired by the Avatamsaka Sutra – or the Flower Ornament Sutra – the epic book that is considered the most elevated scripture of Huayan Buddhism. The sutra contains vivid metaphors and language that evoke powerful imagery to inspire exalted experiences of mind and reality. Wudl does not intend to illustrate the sutra, but rather create images that reflect its rich content.

"The finest jewels appeared spontaneously, raining inexhaustible quantities of gems and beautiful flowers all over the earth." --Translated from Book One of the Avatamsaka Sutra Sparkling jewels appear in several of Wudl's works; as do eyes that float in space or emanate from flowers. A club motif, often miniscule in scale, is pervasive, and represents the elaborate descriptions of phenomena that are characteristic of the Avatamsaka Sutra's literary style. The innumerable and repetitious form also reflects the book's primary purpose as an exhortation to meditation, which in its practice involves repetition. All but one of the works in the exhibition are intimate in scale (sizes range from just over 4 inches square to 9 1/2 x 13 inches), and dense and intricate in composition. The exhibition embraces both pencil drawing on paper, as well as rich oils on paper and canvas. The show also debuts a new suite of etchings that depicts a rose. This rose is the central motif in the exhibition, and is printed in four versions.

Tom Wudl immigrated to the United States from Cochabamba, Bolivia in 1958. Beginning life in a new country at age ten, Wudl already knew he wanted to become a painter. Wudl attended The Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, but achieved most of his skill and insight through his independent study of late Medieval (particularly Northern European) and early Renaissance Italian painting, and during travels to Europe.

Throughout his career, Wudl has balanced his art making with teaching: in addition to leading private classes, he has held positions at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena; UCLA; UC Irvine; UC Santa Barbara; Claremont College; and Otis College of Art and Design. Wudl has exhibited his work at museums and galleries throughout the United States and abroad, including Documenta V, Kassel (1972); Sezon Museum of Art, Tokyo and Nagoya City Museum in Japan; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Art; Pasadena Art Museum; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. L.A. Louver has represented Tom Wudl since 1980.
