Over 180 ancient glass objects from the collection of Erwin Oppenländer are featured in this exhibition.

The Oppenländer collection, which the Getty acquired in 2003, is remarkable for its cultural and chronological breadth. It includes works made in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Greek world, and the Roman Empire, and spans the entire period of ancient glass production, from its origins in Mesopotamia in about 2500 B.C. to Byzantine and Islamic glass of the eleventh century A.D.

Also notable in the Oppenländer collection is the variety of ancient glassmaking techniques, such as casting, core forming, mosaic, inflation, mold blowing, cameo carving, incisimg, and cutting. All these techniques are still used by glass artists today.

The Yes Men's new documentary chronicles the subversive duo's elaborate, politically progressive hoaxes. Using cheap suits, aliases, and "straight" talk, Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno impersonate spokesmen from massive corporations and government agencies that promote bottom lines over human life. In front of unsuspecting audiences, they enact conscience-raising pranks, such as selling preposterous, Halliburton-approved "Survivaballs" to protect the rich from climate change, or promising — on the behalf of Dow Chemical and before 300 million BBC viewers — $12 billion in restitution for a decades-old disaster in Bhopal, India.

Yoga lovers will be jumping for joy (or rather, doing the Downward Dog) thanks to Yogaglo, a new online interactive site that streams yoga classes in HD, allowing anyone to take advantage of the advice of talented teachers without leaving their home or trading in their PJs for pricey gear. Of course, if you're still keen to be old-fashioned and gregarious (as in, flirt with that blue-eyed yogini), just pop on into the studio and set up your membership in person.

The Berlin Wall Project

It's been 20 years since the archaic and divisive Berlin Wall was brought down by fed-up and suppressed citizens. Now, the Wende Museum takes pieces of that wall and addresses present-day barriers with a 60-foot art piece. The Wall Across Wilshire is painted publicly by artists from the OTIS, CalArts, UCLA, and USC art programs, and by the likes of Shepard Fairey, who himself is no stranger to using walls as canvases. Halloween weekend, there's live wall-painting, and before midnight on Sunday, November 8, the wall will shut off one of LA's busiest streets for a concert with Ute Lemper and a poignant dismantling.

Co-produced by Neil Patrick Harris and Tom Salamon, Accomplice: Hollywood sends teams of intrepid folks along Hollywood Boulevard and its environs in a race to save troubled faux-celebrity Nikki Desmond. Part theatre and part scavenger hunt, the interactive performance adventure brings unsuspecting participants in direct contact with sleazy and surreal Hollywood types, performed by eerily dead-on professional actors. A southland spin-off of New York's original Accomplice, the Hollywood version is an essential experience for natives, longtime residents, and out-of-towners alike.

The Norton Simon Museum is delighted to announce the arrival this fall of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s magnificent painting Comtesse d’Haussonville, 1845, on loan from The Frick Collection in New York.

This portrait of the comtesse, a young woman known as Louise, Princess de Broglie (1818–1882), is the first loan from the Frick in an art exchange program between the venerable New York institution and the Norton Simon foundations. Comtesse d’Haussonville will be on view at the Museum from October 30, 2009, through January 25, 2010.

In conjunction with the installation of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s stunning Comtesse d’Haussonville, 1845, on loan from The Frick Collection in New York, the Norton Simon Museum presents Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres. This exhibition of close to 150 paintings, sculpture and photographs from the Norton Simon collections traces artistic engagements with portraiture following Ingres’s influence in the early to mid-19th century through to the present day, and examines why this genre, so seemingly laden with restrictions and expectations, appealed to some of the greatest avant-garde painters in the history of art. The exhibition includes such artists as Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, among many others.

In the run-up to full-blown Halloween frenzy, the Natural History Museum brings on the spiders. Arachnids crawl around an imitation habitat on the south lawn of the museum, where, guided by the light of a flashlight, adventurers receive an intimate experience with a variety of eight-legged wonders. Featured creatures include the appropriately named golden silk spider and the banded garden spider, whose big break came playing Charlotte in children's classic Charlotte's Web. The biggest lesson: spiders are much more fun when they're climbing up the museum's walls instead of your own. Check the NHM website for information on extra-spooky nighttime flashlight tours.

Inspired by the ancient flood story, which has parallels in diverse cultures around the world, this one-of-a-kind new destination invites visitors of all generations to have fun—and to connect with one another, learn the value of community, and help build a better world. Inside a floor-to-ceiling wooden ark, filled to the rafters with whimsical animals, you and your family will play, build, climb, explore, make music, make friends, and more. Conduct a storm, help construct the ark, and bask in the glow of a beautiful rainbow. Mingle with hundreds of fancifully handcrafted animals—from cuddly companions to life-sized puppets—all crafted from recycled materials and everyday objects, including bottle caps, bicycle parts, baseball mitts, croquet balls, mop heads, and rear-view mirrors. It's a Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod City 1960s Tour

Join the Los Angeles Conservancy and its Modern Committee on a "magical history tour" of landmarks from the 1960s. This one-time-only tour offers a rare chance to visit sixties gems in the South Bay area, including the iconic LAX Theme Building -- with access to its observation deck for the first time since 2001!

Other sites include the amazing and completely original St. Jerome Catholic Church; the IBM Aerospace Headquarters Building (now Otis College of Art and Design), designed to resemble a 1960s computer punch card; The Proud Bird Restaurant, an aviation-themed “destination restaurant,” which was a popular fad in SoCal during the ‘60s; Imperial Terminal Flight Path Learning Center & Museum, where you can check out sixties airline fashions and board a DC-3 aircraft; and TRW Space Park, a 110-acre aerospace technologies campus rarely open to the public.

The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 8. At check in, you'll receive a booklet detailing the tour route and other sixties sites to see along the way. Official tour stops will feature a docent-led tour of the site.

Tickets are $25 for L.A. Conservancy members, $30 for the general public, and $10 for kids 12 and under. We hope you’ll join us for this exciting tour and “Mad Men”-esque experience!
