Flegg Athletes attend Wellesley Event and achieve second place overall

There’s some who would say that a former Flegg pupil whose mind is set on the college challenges ahead, shouldn’t be dedicating his summer holidays attending school sports events, penning his experiences and sending them to be published on the PE Website. After all, as I sit here in my sun drenched back garden, with the aroma of a simmering burger bun drifting it’s way through the foxgloves, I am aware that my shorts and polo shirt have been transferred to my Flegg Archive box; my almost brand new football shoes have studded the turf for the last time, and ,well, my gum shield I don’t think has ever fulfilled anyparticular role on the pitch; it saw more activity at the manufacturing factory! And then there’s my leotard! But then, I never was any good at gymnastics.

What sport I ever partook in, consisted mainly of cross-country and athletics. It’s so soon after my departure yet I find myself ending ina mathematical mess as I try to count how many times I competed forthe school over the years. By the end, I had become buddies with the bib bag and trips out on the minibus were as frequent as the weekly shop. I could go on and tell you all about my countless cross country races, but all I’m going to say is that athletics changed my life; mentally and physically. (Bring on the endorphins! Is that the term? Where’s Warnes when you need him?) Having being a regular competitor in the Wellesley, it made a refreshing change on Wednesday 23rd June to stand on the edge of the action; well, on the edge of the long jump sand pit, if you really want to know. My position- backstage rather than on the track- gave me a real understanding of the challenges that faced the athletics. Mr Young’s rhetorical question of “are we going to win,” was a strong encouragement, but in truth, the result is always unpredictable. With both track and field events happening simultaneously, it is tricky to really get an accurate prediction of the final result. The unity between the competitors was positive but the sweat band was still required as both runners, jumpers and throwers felt the pressure during the course of the day. I always remember what Mr Lyn said to me. Mr Lyn, a former athlete and
Olympic coach from Jamaica, trained me in athletics during his brief period at Flegg High a couple of years ago and I always recall before any event, he trained me to think that on the last leg, I was ‘going home.’ It was a simplistic approach but a powerful one which remained in my mind during the race. For the 1500m, Year 7 girls Harriet and Rachael, this was essential advice; the 1500m requiring resilience and determination. For sprinters such as Lucy and Chloe who both won their 100m events, resilience was needed in a different way. Not necessarily throughout their short burst on the track, but resilience to get them through a day of multiple events; indeed, most competitors had more than one track event. Some had to transmit energy to their arms for discus and javelin, while other runners kept a supply of energy in their legs to propel themselves through the sand speckled air on both long and triple jump.

Energy never seems to be my best friend; summer holidays spent sleeping seem inevitable despite my attempts at keeping up in irregular hours. But I realise my problem are far from the priority list; imagine a cross country runner kilometres one day, and metres the next. Henry White, an up and coming athlete, I’m sure, runs regularly in cross country events, but seems to do ever so well in shorter distance events. He’s the ultimate link to the unsolved mysteries regarding human adaptation. (Good luck for the future, Henry!)

Flegg did extremely well, coming 1st in Year 7, second in Year 9 with Cliff Park scraping a few more points to become first in that age group. Year 10s managed to pull off a win but unfortunately, Year 8 only managed a fourth. Parents of these competitors who are wondering where their son’s or daughter’s fingernails have gone need worry no more; the final results were nail-biting. 3rd Lynn Grove, 2nd Flegg, 1st Cliff Park.
It’s one of life’s greatest feelings: the feeling of self satisfaction and success. But to share the success in sport with others is truly remarkable. So if you’re a keen runner whose running shoes only touch the lanes around your village, take a challenge. Join the Flegg Athletics Team and be inspired by others.
The school gates may be closed for me now… but the gate into sport is always open.

The weather here in Flegg at the moment, is looking promising for our athletes, jumpers and throwers.

The year 8 boys welcomed Thorpe High School for the 1st round of the County Cup. With many players out through injury and no players from year 7 available Flegg were not at full strength. The first half saw the Flegg defence being worked but thanks to some fine defending by Nathan Sheering and Matty Wright who helped keep the score at 0-0 after 20 minutes. Thorpe managed to score twice in quick succession before the break despite some good saves from Connor Blundell. The second half saw Flegg play some good football however the strength and depth of Thorpe was to much to cope with. Thorpe scored another four times resulting in a 6-0 defeat.

FLEGG YR 7’S PLAY CLIFF PARK HIGH

On the 8th October Flegg played Cliff Park High. There were some patches of cloud, a lot of sunshine and wind.

A few minutes into the match, Tyler Bleach scored the first goal for Flegg to make it 1-0 to the home team. A little while later, after Tyler’s goal, Cliff Park equalised to make it 1-1. A couple of minutes later, Josh Maney had a chance to put Flegg in front but headed wide. Just a minute later Louie Stronach had a free-kick and almost scored but the keeper got his hands onto it. Then Adam Jones came on and scored after Sam Cox made a mistake and Cliff Park almost scored again to make it all square again. It was 2-1 to Flegg. Still in the 1st half, Ben Gibbs made it 3-1 to Flegg with a cheeky little chip which went over the keeper. The Jones got his 2nd goal of the match with a great volley in the air just before half time. At half time it was 4-1 to Flegg.

Cliff Park kicked off the 2nd half and soon scored to make it 4-2. Some time later Cliff Park should’ve been awarded a throwing but the linesman played on. Then Oliver Abrahams scored his first goal of the match after being substituted. Louie Donaldson- Medler was the one who set up the goal with a corner. Then Louie had a chance to score himself but the keeper saved it. Then Tyler had some great chances but every time he had a shot the keeper got them all the time. Flegg had played consistently well all match. In the last 5 minutes Oliver Abrahams had a great chance to make it 6-2 to Flegg but their keeper saved it again. Then Cliff Park scored to make it 5-3 but it was too late. Flegg had dominated the game; final whistle went and Flegg had won 5-3 to go through to the next round of the cup.

The team: Sam Cox, Tom Green, Tom Shepherd, Callum Haddow, Oliver Abrahams, Louie Donaldson-Medler, Louie Stronach, Josh Larner, Anthony Annison, Ollie Millard, Ross Stanton, Josh Maney, Tyler Bleach, Ben Gibbs and Adam Jones.

MATTHEW DAWSON.

Flegg V Acle: 19th October

Flegg played away to Acle in a hard fought game between both sides. Both teams were looking for the win but unfortunately for Flegg this was not the result they were looking for. Flegg started the game with all the possession and managed to secure 2 goals within 15 minutes. Acle came back the stronger team and scored a goal to finish off the half 2-1. Second half saw Acle more determined than Flegg and early on in the second half, they got their equaliser. Both teams attled well, and Acle found the new again to give them the win.

Louis Stronach

_______________________________________________________________________

Flegg V Caister

Flegg played at home to Caister in wet conditions although this did not affect Flegg’s performance. Flegg took an early lead with a fantastic goal. Although Caister battled well, they were not able to keep out the striking force of Flegg; another goal was added to the tally. Caister did not drop their heads and came back at Flegg with a goal. Half Time 2-1. Second half saw Flegg the stronger defence team as Flegg was giving Caister too much possession. Flegg then came back in to the game, passing and moving well and scoring 3 more goals in the second half to give them a comfortable 5-1 win. A good effort from all the boyrs who played well and well done to the referee for a fair game.

Louis Stronach

EXCLUSIVE VIDEOS BELOW

After all the success that Flegg had last year, the Year 11 Boys are under pressure this season as the series of football games both home and away kick off.Lynn Grove marched onto the school site last Tuesday, 22nd Sepetember, and managed to hook on to a 5-1 victory. Flegg’s chances of winning were low, but the boys didn’t get changed early.
