MODE Gets Loud with Vince Staples, Tycho, Cory Wong, and more.

The MODE Festival music lineup has landed, and it’s arriving alongside a whirlwind of photographic talent you’ll be bragging about seeing for years.

Let’s start with the headliners: Vince Staples, Tycho, and Minnesota’s own Cory Wong will headline consecutive nights of the festival at Loring Park, backed up by openers Infinity Song and Washed Out with BALTHVS playing our Creator’s Stage right in the center of the MODE: HUB. If none of these names ring a bell, get out from under that rock and onto your favorite music platform and give your day some sweet new tunes, we’ll wait.

……. Back with a soundtrack? Excellent.

In addition to musical performances every day of the festival (where cameras are encouraged) we’ve also added some big names to the photography roster. Matthew Rolston, Jonathan Mannion, Steve Sweatpants, and YK join our already star-studded lineup, including Sandro Miller, Chris Burkard, Brooke Shaden, and Penny De Los Santos.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of our favorite programming highlights:

A keynote event titled “Double Exposure: A Conversation with Sandro Miller and Matthew Rolston” that invites audiences into a rare exchange between two renowned portrait photographers, exploring shared influences, contrasting visual languages, and the role of portraiture in constructing identity.
Hands-on workshops and masterclasses led by Art Streiber and Andy Best, covering topics including commercial and editorial production, astrophotography, adventure filmmaking, and more.

A series of sessions with Da’Shaunae Marisa exploring experiential approaches to photography, such as tactile image-making, storytelling, and using the camera as a tool for personal expression.
Street photography workshops, conversations, and guided photo walks with Steven John Irby (Steve Sweatpants) including his “Street Eyes” walk through Minneapolis and a Street Dreams Magazine showcase centered on visual storytelling and creative community-building.

A citywide street photography challenge led by YK, transforming Minneapolis into an interactive classroom.

A Jim Marshall Photography Exhibition presented by Amelia Davis, longtime assistant and estate holder of the legendary music photographer, featuring rare archival work spanning Woodstock, the Rolling Stones’ first American tour, and Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison.

A three-part lighting masterclass series with Sandro Miller.

Skate photography workshops and photo walks led by Canon instructor and Skatefolio Co-Founder, Josh Katz, with hands-on shooting sessions at real skateboarding setups.
Career-focused conversations and gallery programming with music and celebrity photographer Ro.Lexx exploring commercial photography, life on tour, balancing motherhood and creativity, and representation for women in photography.

World Ocean Day – Advocacy and Photography

It’s a lovely day to give thanks to our oceans. Happy World Ocean Day! Today acts as a global reminder of how much we owe to the ocean and what roles we can play in conservation, advocacy and support of these life sustaining waters that make up approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface and hold about 97% of all the water on this planet! It’s a moment to reflect on the roles we play to help sustain these important, irreplaceable resources.

This year, we’re marking the occasion by featuring photos from Flickr members that capture the ocean’s scale, beauty and power. We hope these images move you to reflect and also to act in support of this year’s theme: Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet. We encourage you to visit the official World Ocean Day site to find events near you and learn how you can be part of the effort to protect our oceans.

Partnership Spotlight: Flickr x Black Women Photographers

Photography has always been more than images. It’s memory, documentation, storytelling, resistance, joy – humanity. For years, Black women photographers have shaped visual culture while remaining underrepresented in many of the spaces where creative careers are built. In 2020, Black Women Photographers (BWP), founded by Polly Irungu, launched with a mission to create visibility, opportunity, and community for Black women and non-binary photographers around the world.

What began as a directory quickly grew into something larger: a global network offering grants, mentorship, education, and pathways toward sustainable creative careers. Since partnering with Black Women Photographers, Flickr has been proud to support that work through funding opportunities, visibility initiatives, community spaces, and artist spotlights.

Supporting Photographers through Grants

One of the most meaningful parts of the Flickr and Black Women Photographers partnership has been the continued expansion of grant opportunities designed to support photographers in advancing their work.

Over the years, these grants have increased in size and reach:

2022 Grant:$1,200
2023 Grant: $2,500
2025 Grant: $5,000
2026 Grant: Announcing soon!

The numbers going up year over year is intentional. This is a long-term commitment, not a one-time initiative.

Each cycle has included more than funding. Recipients also receive Flickr Pro and SmugMug memberships, giving photographers the tools to keep building their portfolios and growing their practice long after the grant period ends. Black Women Photographers members have also joined as guest judges, including Flickr member since 2004, Edwina Hay, bringing their perspective to the next cycle of photographers.

Celebrating the photographers behind the work

Every grant cycle has highlighted photographers exploring deeply personal and universal themes through their images. Themes have centered around identity, change, belonging, memory, environment, and the spaces we occupy physically and emotionally.

Recipient of the 2022 Inaugural Flickr x Black Women Photographers grant –
Naomi St Juste with Two Become One

Grant support: $1,200 grant fund, Flickr Pro and SmugMug membership, plus memberships for ten additional recipients.

Naomi St Juste, a self-taught photographer based in Birmingham, United Kingdom, became the first recipient of the Flickr, SmugMug, and Black Women Photographers grant for her image Two Become One. Created around the theme “The Intimacy of: Change,” her work explored transformation through the lens of marriage, family, and new beginnings. Her first camera was a Sony A5000 but her earliest memories of photography are of taking disposable cameras on school trips and to other special events.

Her work set the tone for future grant cycles by demonstrating how deeply personal stories can resonate across communities.

Recipient of the 2023 Flickr x Black Women Photographers Grant –
Genesis Falls with Children at Play

Grant support: $2,500 fund, two-year Flickr Pro membership, one-year SmugMug Pro membership, plus memberships for ten additional recipients.

Chicago-based photographer Genesis Falls received the 2023 grant, which expanded support to $2,500, marking continued growth in Flickr and BWP’s investment in Black women photographers. Genesis is a contemporary portrait photographer whose work often uses black-and-white film to capture emotion, intimacy, and fleeting moments of connection.

Her winning image was recognized for the way light moved through water and the emotional atmosphere created within the frame perfectly capturing the theme, “Light in Motion”. Beyond becoming a grant recipient, Genesis later returned as a grant judge and collaborator, helping shape future Flickr x BWP initiatives.

Recipient of the 2025 Flickr x Black Women Photographers Grant –
Eleonore Menga with Living Our Space

Grant support: $5,000 grant, two-year Flickr Pro membership, one-year SmugMug Pro membership, plus memberships for ten additional recipients.

Eleonore Menga received the partnership’s largest grant to date: $5,000, awarded through the theme “The Spaces We Occupy.” Her winning image, Living Our Space, used double exposure techniques inspired by photographer Carrie Mae Weems to explore family, joy, identity, and the environments that shape us.

Originally from Switzerland and now based in Montreal, Eleonore is a portrait and documentary photographer whose work is deeply rooted in identity, emotion, and connection. Drawing from her Congolese and Haitian heritage, she captures the beauty and resilience of Afrodescendant and diasporic stories, often through these intimate moments at home with family.

Beyond funding: creating spaces for visibility

The best partnerships don’t stop at the announcement. Over the years, Flickr and Black Women Photographers have collaborated through artist features, curated galleries, community discussions, and opportunities that put Black women photographers in front of new audiences. BWP is doing incredible work and we’re proud to be part of it.

It’s almost time for those moments when the light lasts longest. Later evenings, sunnier mornings, the summer is right around the corner. Don’t miss this month’s photo challenges!

It’s not too late to join May’s Flickr Monthly Photo Challenge. This month we’re asking for photos that focus on the theme, reflections. Any interpretation of what that means to you is welcome. If your reflection takes top spot then we’ll give you a year of Flickr Pro and a gorgeous print. So there’s nothing to lose, our photo challenges are a great way to see what inspires the Flickr community and maybe win a cool prize while you’re at it!

And that is just one of the awesome photo challenges we’re hosting this month. We’re also giving away another epic prize in our MODE monthly photo challenge. This month’s MODE challenge theme is in honor of the MODE pillar: Earth. From landscapes and wildlife to the moments that make us stop and look closer, that is what MODE: Earth is all about. Photojournalism on Flickr

At a time when news travels fast and so many people have a camera in hand, photojournalism documents history in the making. It shows the world what we are seeing with our own eyes, providing a way to share our stories and our perspectives. We believe in the power of photojournalism to inform, challenge, and connect us which is why we’re inviting the photojournalists on Flickr, from pros to beginners, to join our Photojournalists of Flickr group.

This group brings together the POVs of photographers all over the world to swap stories, appreciate our neighbors near and far and inspire each other to continue bringing their cameras along for the ride. Check out Photojournalists of Flickr and share your photos or just enjoy scrolling through the photo pool. In this group, you’ll see connection through photography happening in real time and you may find some inspiration along the way.

A quick refresher on the fundamentals

Our Flickr Fundamentals series will be kicking off again, very soon. While we’re waiting for our newest installment to drop, it’s a great time to get caught up on last year’s Flickr Fundamentals. We’ve covered some great topics with tips about fan favorites like Explore to frequently asked questions about admin’ing your own Flickr group. Catch up on last year’s Flickr Fundamentals on the Flickr blog and don’t forget to check out these short video tutorials for that extra help showing you around. Then, stay tuned to the blog for our next round of Flickr Fundamentals, dropping soon!

Flickr Mood Boards on Pinterest

Earlier in the year we kicked off our Flickr Mood Boards, a way to feature your photography in Flickr galleries and also on Pinterest. Each image shared on Pinterest will drive traffic and new fans back to your Flickr site when someone clicks on your image. We’ve found inspiration in so many places with our Mood Boards spanning topics like space, film, love and opening your windows.

Visit Flickr on Pinterest and pin some of your favorite photos to help give inspiring photographers a little extra shout-out. If you love creating boards and saving Flickr photos that you love, don’t forget to use our built-in share modal, it comes with its very own “share to Pinterest” button, making it seamless to build boards on Pinterest directly from Flickr.

There are 37 national parks and 11 national park reserves in Canada that represent 31 of Canada’s 39 terrestrial natural regions and protect approximately 343,377 square kilometers of lands in Canada. These wild places, located in every province and territory, range from mountains and plains, to boreal forests and tundra, to lakes and glaciers, and much more. Parks Canada is responsible for protecting these areas, and for managing them for visitors to understand, appreciate, and enjoy in a way that doesn’t compromise their ecological integrity.

Earth Day. Every Day

At Flickr, nature has always been close to our hearts. Nature and wildlife photographers have shared millions of images to Flickr and are testament to how extraordinary this planet is. From backyard birdwatching to bucket list adventures visiting our natural wonders so much of what we photograph depends on a healthy, thriving planet. So today, we want to wish everyone a happy Earth Day!

Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on April 22nd and Earthday.org is reporting over 10,000 events happening globally. Whether you find one near you to attend, get outside with friends and neighbors or head out solo, we hope you’ll find a moment to give something back to this amazing place we call home. What can you do to participate? There are so many options! Clean up your community, plant a tree, attend a workshop, join a peaceful demonstration, register to vote, no act is too small. And photographers, why not bring your camera along to document the good work in action?

Every day, Flickr members are out capturing the beauty and awe of this planet and sharing it with the community. That photography connects us all in a way that feels tangible and that connection is powerful. When we work together, even through small acts, we can accomplish great things. Find Your Instant Film Community: Spring ‘RoidWeek has arrived!

Spring ‘RoidWeek 2026 is here and it’s time for instant film to take center stage. ‘RoidWeek – shorthand for “Polaroid Week” – is a celebration led by a group of instant film enthusiasts on Flickr, dedicated to showcasing the beauty, fun and creativity that instant film offers. Since 2006, photographers have gathered on Flickr to connect over their shared love of instant film. From Polaroid to Fujifilm Instax and beyond, all instant film is welcome during ‘RoidWeek. More than just a showcase, it’s a biannual tradition that connects instant film lovers worldwide. Here are some quick rules before you get started snapping.

‘RoidWeek rules:

The photo pool is open from April 19th to April 24th.
Submit photos that haven’t been shared to Flickr before.
Keep your submissions to TWO photos per day throughout the 6 day event.
This is a film-only group. No Faux-laroids are accepted. A “faux-laroid” is a digital image edited to look like an instant photograph.
Participation is encouraged! Sharing your photos is important but you are also encouraged to fave, comment and interact with other group members to help build community and support around a shared love of instant film!

Looking Back: Awe-Inspiring photos from NASA’s Artemis II mission

Last week, the world watched as NASA’s 10-day Artemis II Moon mission came to a triumphant end. If you missed the coverage, we have the photos to help catch you up.

Throughout the mission, NASA shared hundreds of images documenting this historic moment for all to see. An added bonus: they’re released under a Creative Commons license, which means the public can download and use them for free. You can read the full license details here.

So where can you find all these stunning space moments? NASA HQ and NASA Johnson are just a couple of clicks away and they’ll take you on a virtual mission alongside the brave crew of the Integrity. Spring is in the air and so is a whole lot of Flickr energy. This past month we’ve announced an exciting, first of its kind photography festival, featured some incredible photographers on the blog and through Flickr galleries and boosted the signal for our Photojournalism Flickr group. Here’s a quick recap to catch you up on all of the details and exciting announcements.

MODE by Flickr: The World’s Photography Festival

Flickr officially announced MODE, a brand new and immersive three-day photography festival coming to Minneapolis, September 18-20. Built on Flickr’s 22 years of connecting photographers worldwide, MODE is designed to bring the community together in person for the kind of creative energy and connection that only happens face-to-face. Photographer Spotlight with Web Betty

Speaking of creativity, we recently interviewed Melissa Johnson, aka Web Betty. Melissa is a Colorado based photographer who celebrates the community around her by capturing joy, color, artistic expression and connection through her photography. Honoring Women’s History Month

For Women’s History Month we joined the celebrations happening around the country amplifying women’s voices, visions and at Flickr, photography. This month we featured three photographers who shared galleries of their work along with personal stories about their photography and what photography means to them. Make sure to spend some time getting to know each one of them and then hand out some faves and follows to other women photographers that inspire you. Also, keep an eye out for this month’s Explore Takeover, going up on Thursday March 26th. We’ve dedicated all 500 images of March’s Takeover to the women on Flickr and it’s not one to miss!

Monthly photo challenge: MODE edition!

To celebrate the upcoming MODE festival, we’ve launched a photo challenge inspired by the MODE themes. Join the MODE by Flickr group, check out the current theme (Motion) and submit up to 5 photos using the challenge tag. Each month we’ll choose a winner to receive a MODE box packed with festival goodies including a Flickr Pro Interactive Pass for MODE. The first theme is Motion, so start shooting.
