Universal gets a new logo sequence. I think it’s a bit over-the-top, but at least the Earth is rotating in the right direction, unlike a lot of globe-based title animation.

For my own reflection and possibly your entertainment, I’ve picked my favorite tracks of 2011. I didn’t buy as much music this year as I usually do, but there’s always good stuff to be found out there.

Bon Iver: Calgary
Bon Iver is one of those groups I really couldn’t stand after I heard their first album. They depressed me. But some good friends took us to a concert this year and suddenly it clicked. This is a very moving song and I love it.

Thievery Corporation: Take My Soul
Thievery Corporation is two guys in Washington DC that make some of the most amazing music around. A fusion of Latin, hip-hop, jazz, and world music. Throw in amazing guest vocalists from time to time and you have some incredible music.

R.E.M: Überlin
These guys got me through high school in the 1990s. I never would have guessed that this year’s album would be their final work. I get a kick out of the guy in this video.

Moby: Victoria Lucas
I love Moby’s work because it’s always so personal. He writes and often records his music in his NYC apartment and the video for this track was shot by him wandering the streets of LA.

Federico Aubele: Bohemian Rhapsody In Blue
This guy makes some seriously smooth and catchy music. (But needs a little more lip balm in this video.)

Tycho: A Walk
Tycho’s entire album, Dive, is an amazing piece of work. It was hard to pick just one track. My #1 album of the year.

Anyone who enjoys experiencing new sonic textures in their ears needs to listen to Amon Tobin’s new album ISAM. His supporting tour for the album is an amazing show of 3D-mapped projections synced in-time with the music. A visual and sonic delight.
