Story originally ran May 23, 2007 Linden lost a big chunk of history in last weekend's devastating fire, but this city can preserve its special charm with a creative rebuilding program. From early signs, we'd bank on this outcome. It's important, for starters, that the overwhelming community sentiment is to replace the heavily damaged Union Block Mercantile building - if it comes to this - with something approximating its 1870s architecture. Because of the downtown's state historical register status, rules would require this anyway, but it's always better in a complex undertaking if all parties are of the same mind.
