p/s: I would love to release a full and free WP themes, like before, but with time constrain and internet connection limitation that I’m having at the moment, it is not the right time yet.

One thing most of the people don’t know is that I got into an accident on my way to Penang on 30th May. A pretty bad one. And I was hospitalized for few days due to minor injuries on my head that causes some memory loss; and on my face that make me less handsome than before.

Okay that last part was stupid.

Thank God I survived.

It is worst than what you can see.

It was raining - I kinda drifted, with 540 degree spin and such. The funny thing is, there was already another accident at that place. Yeah, I saw them during my drift action. The car was in a big drain on my left, and luckily I didn’t hit them but spinned to the right side. The two dudes from the earlier accident told me they were just there 15 minutes before me. Lucky for me they were there to help and such. Not that I said its good that they got into the accident though.

After a few calls and waitings and helps from other people, especially since Maxis has no coverage at all up the hills, my dad arrived with his friend at the scene - with a big smile on his face.

One dude laughed when he saw my father, tap my shoulder and said “Dude, you should respect and salute your father till the end of the world!” He said that because from his experience, most of the fathers will come with an angry face and lecture their child if they got into this kind of mess. haha I guess he’s right. My dad is so cool.

I was frustrated though. I have to wait for few weeks to repair and such, not to mentioned the money that will go into it. gahhh I hate not to have a car to move around.

There you go, an update, at last.

And now the internet is back to normal, I was like, gahhh, who need internet!

Yeah right.

End of the last 5 months

So the semester ended last Friday with unpredictably disappointing and extensively difficult Electrical Machine paper. Dude, this is the only subject I was hoping for an A+ since my coursework marks is pretty good. No more hope, I guess. It was tougher than that freaking DSP!

After a lot of curses and swears after that, my coursemates organized this little ‘Pre-Internship Get Together Gathering EE Jan 2006′. Yeah I made the name up. Anyhow, it was fun since we will not be seeing each other for the next 8 months of internship.

The next 8 months

So, I will be driving to Penang tomorrow morning. One of my soon-to-be housemate, Dehaq, is already there, alone. I just called him just now. Lol. Pity him. Fit a.k.a Melongray will be joining us this Sunday.

This is my first time driving to Penang, and I’m all alone with just a little guides. Lets hope I won’t get lost and ended up in Thailand haha.

New experience and surrounding with new people - that actually sounds interesting to me. I am going to be open to anything that comes and try to be as optimist as I can. This is growing up, man!

Okay get back to packing more stuff. Bye.

That’s my Macbook, everyone. The victim of my pointless and random so called artsy doodle. Still in progress, I think. Actually that is the bottom part of the Macbook. I wish I had the guts to do it on the top lid instead. Maybe not yet.

Talking about my Macbook, I thought maybe I will add some extra RAM this coming holiday. Current spec is only 2GB. Fortunately, in case u didn’t know, although my iStat indicator shows that the RAM usage is already 99%, the system is not slowed down at all - feels like nothing - but I was just being careful with this, so I might want to add another 2GB later.

Suddenly, I have this feeling of buying a Macbook Pro instead! Urgh dammit give me RM7000!

I’m still in the final exam period. Only one paper is done. Another 4 to go throughout this week. The last paper will be on this coming Friday. I am actually pretty excited and nervous because after that I’ll be going for my internship. Ah. Don’t know what to expect. I will have to wear formal attire everyday, 8-to-5 routine, and I can’t keep my hair anymore! Can I? haha. Nevermind, it is one of the life experience that we have to go through, right?

So here is the start of my Fun with PHP series (hopefully).

Random image

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to get images from a directory, and display them on the screen, one by one, randomly, everytime you refresh the page. Yeah, not a difficult thing.

We start by preparing some images. Here, I am using 12 images from my previous Kreativuse posts (just because all of them have been set to 450px and 200px). Then, make sure you rename each file in numbers, starting from 1.jpg to 12.jpg. Put everything in a folder, named img

Then, we should create the index.php file. In this file, we will generate a random number between 1 to 12, and put it in the <img src /> that will handle the image display. Here is the full code structure.

Explanation. On line 9, there is a simple PHP line that says <?php $x = rand(1,12); ?>. That means, we are generating a random number from 1 to 12 and apply it to parameter x. Read more about the rand() function.

On line 13, we are using the value of that x parameter, and put it in the <img alt="" /> line. So, if the value of x now is ‘6′, the 13th line will be executed as

… and the picture named 13.jpg will be displayed on screen! Easy.

We’ll now add some CSS to the page with a new file style.css. You can use whatever style you want - this is just an example:

Random quote

Well, sometimes you can see some random quotes on some websites, with a new one appear everytime you refresh the page. Here is one simple (and manual) way to do it.

You can add the following PHP code in the previous index.php file

The array() line can be written in one single line, but for the sake of readability, better to use multiple lines. Now we have six different phrase in the array called $text. Make sure to put comma (,) at the end of each phrase if you want to add some more into the array. The $i parameter, is used to get a random value from 0 to 5 (total of 6) - this will be used as our array index number.

Then, add the following in the index.php file, perhaps below the title.

<p class="tagline"><?php echo $text[$i];?></p>

We are displaying one of the phrase in the array. If, let say, the value of $i now is 3, so we are display value in $text[3] which is “Yeah yeah yeah!”. (Remember: an array index number starts with 0).

Think of what you can do with this. You can have a random website header on your blog if you used the random image technique. Just modify the code a bit.

You can also have random advertisement displayed on the sidebar with the combination of random image and random quote technique. Can you think of it? Think harder.

It is good to know that today’s kids can learn very fast in anything there are interested in. In becoming a website dude, there are several type of people I’ve found:

• Those who really are interested in web design and development.
• Those who just want to try something new just for the fun of it
• Those who want to make quick money by declaring themselves as freelance web designer.
• Those who just want to quickly a create website so they can place advertisements everywhere.

Haha.

When you have the passion to learn something, you would do anything in order to tackle it. No, keep bugging other people for every single details is not considered. That means, you don’t go and ask people without even trying. And you don’t ask them how to do it - you asked them to give you some directions and hints. Trust me, the learning is actually the fun part.

Lets go to a step-by-step process that you can try.

Step 0: Know what to expect.

You should prepare yourself to undergo some geeky coding experience. Well, some people don’t expect that because they thought website is just visuals, graphics and texts with some click thing. Designing a website in a graphic software is one thing, and coding is another thing. Plus, it is not something you can learn in just few days. It takes time for you to develop the skills.

Step 1: Get the free stuff

Personally, I think it is best to learn from the existing stuff. Download some examples of CSS and XHTML templates - something like this and this; or if you prefer WordPress themes, you can have it here. Don’t be ashamed to try on a simpler layout if you don’t understand most part of the coding on a complex layout. And you don’t want to waste too much time just to choose the template.

Step 2: Explore and Discover

From the example layouts, you need to go through each files and try to understand each lines of it. As for understanding, there are a lot of resources available as references. Here are some:

• w3school CSS
• w3shcool xHTML
• WordPress Codex

This is the most important (and longest) part of all. How much you understand the code structure will determine how well you’ll be performing in the later stages. Try to modify the source code. For this, you can either use the ordinary Notepad or Textmate, or you can choose from many source code editors. It is highly recommended that you use Firebug throughout this process too. You can read my Firebug-related tutorial to learn more.

Be very ambitious - try to look at as many CSS tutorials as possible. The floats, the positions and everything.

Step 3: Self-evaluation

Once you are familiar with the structure of the webste, from the <html> to <head> to <body> down until the end of </html> and everything in between, you should force yourself into a self-evaluation process. Ditch all the free layouts you downloaded earlier, and start from a blank file.

Create your first page, link to your stylesheet; add the headers, footers and all. Make it fun - put some colors and images. Style the headings, the hyperlinks, hover effect, and those cool stuff.

When everything looks great on the browser, spend some time to stand up, run and shout around the room for few seconds to celebrate your victory. Haha

Step 4: Meet the standard

Once you are familiar with the syntax and everything, you might want to move one step ahead by validating you works to meet the web standards. What are web standards? Read about it here.

Designing with web standards by Jeffrey Zeldman; an old book, but that doesn’t mean you can’t read it anymore. It was actually the book that gave me the courage to validate my website for the first time. (It is not valid now, due to unsupported opacity effect in CSS 2.0).

It is a good practice though.

Step 5: Learn more

The things you’ve learn in the early stages may not be enough for a much complex layout. Keep learning new things and tricks. Some useful links: 53 CSS-Techniques You Couldn’t Live Without and Most Used CSS Tricks

No, it’s not done. Never will. Repeat Step 5.

For me, its like using Linux - if you are a lazy ass person, don’t bother to install one in your system - or you’ll ended up as that annoying dude, to keep coming to one person for his/her help to do almost everything for you. It is all about commitment, right?

What’s up with that Twitter? Well, since I use Twitter, I posted everything there - some daily updates, curses and rambling and stuff. So I have nothing else to put into my blog. Twitter literally killed my blog - well, almost. I’m not really good at giving conceptual and literature text, although I do have a lot of things in mind, so nothing much to be written anyway.

To be honest, it is quite sad to stop writing about technical stuff - those WordPress, CSS and Fireworks tutorials, web-design related articles, also - WordPress themes. Ideas are in mind - it just I can’t afford to sit down and really complete them. gahhh. What a waste. I also have to limit my freelance activities. My last project was for Amanz.my

So, whats up? I’m at home now for a one-week holiday. Oh it is so good to be home. The weather is way much better. And the internet connection is better than that gay connection in UTP. Just slightly better, not great.

I mentioned in my previous posts that I will be going for a 8-month industrial internship this June. And Thank God, I got some interview offers from some good companies. The first one was from Intel - it was a phone interview and it was kinda cool - and after few days, I was informed that I was accepted. I already set my mind to undergo my internship at Intel, so I actually decided to turn down other interview offers from the other companies. No need to mention here though. I will be living in Penang for that 8 freaking months! Oh my. Anyone has any experiences to share?

Creative Art Festival, or CRAFT is happening in UTP. I believe this is the first time this kind of event is held here. I was very excited about it for the past few weeks. It’s like UTP version of Rantai or whatever.

There are several stuff in the whole CRAFT; Sold Out!, ShutterBug, Tshirt Design etc etc. Check out the site for more info. It is pretty cool, since it is also organized by Paperme guys.

It is funny actually when people came to you and say, “Flisterz eh?”. And we were talking using our internet names. “weh Blank tak datang ke?“, “Melongray cari ko doh” and stuff. Haha

There was a little busking inside the ShutterBug exhibition room. When I entered the room, Azam who was singing said, “Okay next song, lagu Gaddafi”, and he started his freestyle lyrics right there, rambling about me. Lol.

There was also small place set up for some doodling. It pretty cool to see those artsy kids.

Well, I am trying my best to keep it updated although I have to wake up really really early in the morning just to get a decent internet connection. Seriously.

Busy. Yeah, I always do. That is normal, right? But sometimes if I’m busy doing something I hate, I better have some damn good stress-release action plan so I can still survive the mental explosion. Well, I am trying, with some rants of how I wish I can quit, and do something else, or get a job, or get married. lol. Pity my roomate.

I’m going for an industrial internship for 8 months in my next semester. Still figuring out where I actually want to work at. Hmm. If you happen to have an engineering company, who needs an electrical & electronics engineer as an intern, and want to revamp or build a website for your company, do let me know. haha

Extra_note: I got a lot of requests to upgrade my Freicurv and FTW 2.0 themes to WordPress 2.7 with all 2.7 features and all. Sorry to say, I really don’t have the time to do that now. You can wait, but no promises.
