Before I get to this week’s show, I pose a simple question.  At what point did OK GO become known for freakin’ amazing videos?  The new one for “This Too Shall PAss” is hella awesome.  Youtube that jive…or don’t.  I don’t care.

Now, yet again, you’ll be getting an abridged version of the writing on this week’s post.  It’s been a crazy day and a crazy week…including yet another battle with my belongings.  This time it was my furnace and its circuit board…which decided the time to blow up was last night.  Joy.

So, the show and my stand-outs.  First of all, I cannot get enough of Local Natives.  Their music has a certain quality that I find undeniably pleasurable.  Make sure to hunt down their track “Airplanes” as well…that track has become a recent “repeater” on my i-pod.

The Canon Lights present a great track as well.  I may be attracted to this…simply because I have a keyboard sitting next to me as we speak that I’m dying to learn how to play.

The Boxer Rebellion track is pretty interesting as well.  As a production guy, I’m immediately drawn to the fact that some of the vocals are so low, you’re immediately drawn to them…an interesting trick seldom used.

There’s a good chance you won’t like the Pretty Lights offering…and that’s too bad because you can download it for free over at www.prettylightsmusic.com.  Give it a listen…I can promise that you won’t turn it off.

I hate to say it again, but I’m slammed again this week!  So I, again, can’t write as much.  I have a ton of projects going on…but none-the-less, I’ll touch on my stand-outs.

Hands down, the greatest track of this week is by The Cribs.  It’s by no means a “new” track…but I was just turned onto it this weekend in my girlfriend Christine’s car (satellite radio).  I’ve been a fan of the band for a while (and there’s a Postal Service remix of one of their tracks that’s amazing) but this track has quickly catapulted to my favorites.

Also, the Immuzikation remix / mash / whatever-the-hell-you-call-it is flippin sweet.  Whoever or whatever Immuzikation is…rocks my world.  They have a bunch of really cool stuff out there that I highly recommend you hunt down.  They also somehow get their hands on brand-spankin’ new stuff all the time (I first heard the Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” in one of their remixes).

I’m not going to lie to you, I have a busy day planned…so I can’t write too much this week.  Sorry.

There are, however, a few things I want to quickly touch on.  The Radio Dept. is (almost) back in action…and I’m excited to hear what their new album will sound like.  I was a huge fan of some of their older stuff…ie.  “Freddie and the Trojan Horse.”  Make sure to check that one out.  They have a great sound to them…the “indie-electro-pop” sound that, at some point in my life, made its way into my favour.

I urge you to listen the the Rogue Wave track acouple of times.  It sounds nothing like what I thought it would…and upon first listen, I really wasnt very impressed.  After the second and third listen, I was completely hooked.  I haven’t been to thrilled with this year’s new music…and Rogue Wave has, in my mind, saved the first quarter.

Joanna Newsom is also putting out a new album this month.  Again, this is not what I expected.  My first introduction to Joanna was a track called “Peach, Plum, Pear.”  The only words I can think of to describe that one is “completely and utterly unique”…and possibly “creepy.”  Joanna, a harpist, definitely delivers a new track like nothing I’ve ever heard before that’s bound to please.  It has an undeniable innocence that is amazing to listen to.

Okay.  We start this week off with a band called Princeton…named after the Santa Monica street and not the New Jersey town (strike 1 in my book).  Anyways, if there’s any reason to listen to this week’s show…it’s for this track.  It’s so ridiculously good…and not only have I been listening to it non-stop…but I’m pretty sure this one will be in my heavy rotation for the rest of the year.  The song has a certain desireable quality I can’t quite put my finger on.  The beat forces at least 1 thing on your body to tap…the lazy way the chorus is sung adds a mysterious element of romance.  I don’t know exactly what I’m trying to say…except that you really have to check this one out.

Speaking of not being able to understand lyrics, Asobi Seksu is up next.  Their music is characterized as “dream pop”…but also incorporates a Japanese pop flavor.  Namely, these lyrics are, for the most part, in Japanese.  According to some lyrics website…the song contains the phrases “Candy says” and “no memory.”  Why these phrases would not be in Japanese as well…is beyond me.  Unless “Candy says” and “no memory” IS Japanese…well then that would just blow my mind.  Speaking of which…at what point in those last couple of lines did I stop making even the remotest bit of sense?

Hot Chip has a new album out called One Life Stand.  Although the band claimed the this new album would be much simpler, quieter, and slower…this track begs to differ.  The music starts out like a scene from a spy movie..and breaks into a chorus of music that would be best suited to waking me up in the morning…just before acouple of birds bring me my robe.

Moto Boy follows with “The Heart is a Rebel.”  First of all…everyone knows that’s not true.  The heart is a librarian.  duh.  If you can get past that, the track is spectacular.

The XX.  Where to begin.  I love this track.  First of all…the hip-hop beat gives this other-wise indie rock track an added texture a traditional drum sound just can’t bring.  On top of that…the female and male vocals are incredible.  This track could best be described as the kind of song that makes you think of 2 vampires staring at each other longingly…or not.

Go Sailor was apparently a very short lived band.  I’m assuming there isn’t much else known about them…because everything I read about them offers no relevent or interesting information except the fact that they were “short-lived.”  Anyway, it’s a fun, straight-ahead, female fronted indie-rocker…and I dig it…which is why it’s here.

Okay…I’m not even going to waste any time writing anything about Aqualung or Carolina Liar.  The fact is…I like these tracks.  And that’s it.  Besides, that damn Carolina Liar song is on that commercial for The Time Traveler’s Wife…so I’ve been hearing it nonstop.

I finished things up with an additional track tucked away at the end here…just because I totally dig it…but I’m not sure if you will.  So…when the first visitors from another planet come to Earth, they’ll more than likely be robotic or artificial in nature.  Anyway…Four Tet is probably what their music will sound like.  So get on board now…and maybe you’ll be spared when they take over.

On this week’s show…

Our first band tonight, Built to Spill, has been around alot longer than I had expected.  7 studio albums.  That’s alot of studio albums.  Anyway, I’m not too familiar with them…but I know that I like their sound…even on the tracks that sound similiar to REM…like this one.

Local Natives come in next.  The start of the track, which, through the miracle of radio magic, I edited out, starts with what could be best described as what a group of 6 or 7 guys who were just punched in the stomach would sound like.  However, it quickly turns into “hey, alright” when the drum kicks in.  I have no idea why…but I find that so damn hilarious.  Be warned, the hook is bound to get stuck in your head for at least 4 days.  I’m sorry.

Port O’Brien and Seabear are bands that I honestly know nothing about.  Sorry.  The Port O’Brien song is really good.  It has a creepy vibe to it from start to finish.  The hints of cello and group humming and super-reverby guitar (yeah, I think I just somehow turned “reverb” into an adjective) do nothing but add to its dark mood.  Seabear also presents a pretty good track that I really can’t think of anything to say about…except the fact that accordians scare the hell out of me.

Rosie and Me are up next.  They’re unsigned…and probably unheard of.  “Come Back” has been stuck in my head every since I first heard it.  It’s a simple, straight ahead acoustic folk track with female lead vocals that sound incredible.

Next…Glasvegas.  Okay, I totally missed this train when they first appeared in the scene.  Ah well.  I like it now…if that matters at all.

Next up is NYC band Electric Tickle Machine with “Blew It Again.”  It’s a fun track…with a hilarious, not safe for work, album cover.  It reminds me a little of Jane’s Addiction…if Jane’s Addiction were a hipster rock band.

Closing out this week’s show is Santigold…who just recently climbed Kilimanjaro to fight the global clean water crisis.  I know what you’re thinking.  “Rich, how does climbing Kilimanjaro fight the clean water crisis?”  Truthfully…I have no idea.  “Lights Out” is, however, a startling reminder about the need for clean energy.  Okay, it’s not…but I dig the song.

First of all, sorry I’m late with this.  I’ve finally decided to restart construction work on my kitchen.  There was a sale on cabinets…so my Wednesday consisted of loading and unloading my truck all day long.  Needless to say, my arms and chest are frigin killing me today…and my downstairs living room is literally packed to the ceiling with cabinet boxes.  On a sidenote, I think I sprung a frigin leak in the house.  First of all, I spent an assload of money getting a brand-new roof only 2 or 3 years ago…and I should not be getting mysterious water-stains on the ceiling of the second floor.  It goes without saying that I’m quite bitter…and quite tired of this house.  But enough about that…onto the show.

Up first is the Hey Champ remix of “What You Need” by Priors.  I immediately feel in love with this track upon first listen.  It’s dancy and disco-y…that’s just as low-key as it is intense to listen to.

Okay…so I’m not a huge fan of the Monsters of Folk thing going on right now.  I am, however, a fan of Bright Eyes…Conor Oberst being the link between the two.  “Four Winds” is an INCREDIBLE song…and I actually think The Killers did it justice with their cover.

Caribou is back with new music…with a release due out in April, I believe.  I love how the beat sounds like, literally, everything including the kitchen sink…even the sounds in said sink (drips…bangs…and drops).  It’s a complicated lo-fi gem that pulls itself together nicely.

Johnny Foreigner comes in as one of the more “rocky” selections from this week’s show.  “Eyes Wide Terrified” reminds me of something I can’t quite put my finger on..and in all honesty, it’s driving me insane.  Moving on, the track’s hook really speaks to me: “your life is a song…but not this one.”  I’m sure that different people can take that in different ways…but to me, in my current state, fills me with hope and confidence.  I’m sure you don’t care…so thanks…jerk.

Emanuel and Fear, an 11-piece orchestral band, come in next with “Dear Friend.”  Okay…so they’re constantly compared to Ben Folds.  In other words, there’s piano..and you can totally picture the singer wearing hip glasses and a sweater vest of sorts.  The song itself can’t help but make you feel good about the world.  They’re getting some great reviews…and you can totally hear why.

Fanshaw and “Strong Hips” is next.  First of all, I love female vocals.  I don’t know why, I just do.  This track has a creepy vibe to it which scratches me in all the right places.  I’m sure you’ll dig it.  In addition, I’ve been dying to use the phrase “scratches me in all the right places.”

New music from the Gorillaz next…which is awesome.  I love how Alburn can pretty much go nuts with the Gorillaz.  There aren’t any rules.  Genres mean nothing.  I’m really looking forward to the new album…and that’s really all I can say about that.

I close out the show with The Magic Numbers and one of my favorites “Take a Chance.”  It’s by no means new…but it’s one of those tracks that I can never grow tired of.  It recently found its way back into my normal rotation…and I’m quite pleased about that.  Not only does it represent a good point in my life…but if I had to try to describe what kind of music I like best, I guess The Magic Numbers’ name would definitely come up.

So…last week, Jay Reatard was found dead.  He was 29.  I’m not going to lie…I wasn’t a huge, huge fan…and I’ve never spent any time discussing or featuring him here…but none-the-less, I couldn’t not play anything.  So…farewell…

Next is El Perro Del Mar…a band who’s name I pretty much always sound like an ass saying.  I uncovered this doing some hard-drive cleaning…and figured it’s frigin awesome…and I’d throw it in the show.  This is also the second frigin time I have unknowingly chosen the “Starbuck’s I-Tunes Pick of the Week” in 2010.  That’s 2 out of 3 for those of you keeping score.  I swear I had no idea.  If only this coincidence could translate to lottery numbers.  Unfortunately, I now have to see if Starbucks has stolen my DNA.  I’ll let you know what happens.

Moving on.  Jeff the Brotherhood…two brothers from Tennessee.  “U Got the Look” is an awesome tune…that, to me anyway, reminds me of early stuff from The Misfits…or possibly the Eagles of Death Metal.  It’s a gritty, grimy, catchy rock tune that is sure to please.  I definitely recommend you hunt down the video.  I don’t do drugs…but I’m assuming that if I did, the video is kindof what it would look like.

Alberta Cross is a band out of NYC who claims their name is an anagram..but won’t reveal of what.  I’m guessing “a cars lobster,” “”arbor castles,” or “boars scarlet.”  Why I’m guessing these?  I have to go to the bathroom and I don’t want to waste any more effort than I already have actually.  Thanks for asking.

Minus the Bear is a spectacular band.  The musicians are actually musicians…which, unfortunately, seems rare now-a-days.  They’re also one of my go-to bands when I want to play the drums to something fun.  Their songs are never uniform throughout…and I love them for that.  This track is very cool to listen to…but the lyrics confuse me.  Pachuca is in Mexico…but why is the first line about the Mediterranean Sea?  I’m sorry if that question keeps you up at night…but in the spirit of journalism, I have to ask the questions that no one else will in an endless pursuit of truth.  I know, it’s tough being me.

Freelance Whales is up next with “Generator Second Floor.”  It’s funny, every review I read about this band…is totally off in relation to this song.  They all say that the band uses all these crazy instruments…and group vocals everywhere…and it should be all trippy and what not.  Maybe I missed something…maybe this is the only song from the band I’m familiar with…maybe you should mind your own business…or maybe you should get out of my dreams and into my car.  Whatever…it’s really all up to you.

Birdie Hilltop starts up our last chunk of music.  It’s a one-man band out of NYC who, for the time being, plays little shows in little venues.  It’s a nice little track that, according to the artist, is intentionally lo-fi.  It’s one of those songs that, with every listen, you find something new…like the weird drumming (well…maybe not drumming…but things being hit) at around 1:30…or maybe some very subtle ambient tracks hidden behind the acoustic guitars.

Closing out this week’s show is Florence + The Machine.  I could have sworn I heard this on TV last week…but I think I was wrong (I know…you’re shocked!  I can’t say I blame you).  Anyway, Florence + The Machine comes highly acclaimed and was even just nominated for Best Female Solo Artist for the 2010 Brit Awards.  If you haven’t heard this yet…you probably should…just so you don’t feel left out when your mom asks you about it.

Now that that’s covered, I think I owe everyone an apology.  If you’re not brain-dead…you’ve noticed that the site is finally updated.  I tried to make it look a little prettier…and like I didn’t build it in about an hour like the first version.  If you’re subscribed to my feed, I probably annoyed the hell out of you on Monday when I was updating this bitch.  So…sorry!  I probably won’t be changing anything for a little while…

We start things off with Total Babe…a band that makes me have hope for future generations.  Apparently, not ALL teenagers are idiots…just the ones I see on TV…so that’s good (the band members are in their teens).  The song, on the other hand, is awesome.  The words flow into each other so fluidly, it almost sounds like it’s in another language…definitely a beautiful track that you can’t help but dig on.

Japandroids are next.  Not only do they win a spot on my list of coolest band names ever (next to the likes of “Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.”), but they present an awesome, straight ahead punk-ish indie-rock track that feels like it emanates straight out of a college-town house basement.  The more I listen to “Young Hearts Spark Fire,” the more I realize how flipping awesome it is.

Before Bon Iver…Justin Vernon was Justin Vernon.  He pisses me off…but only because he makes me believe that some people have an innate ability to make incredible music…like my innate ability with the ladies.  On the music tip, I unfortunately do not have that ability…but try to fake it quite often.  The track is undeniably Justin Vernon…and if you like his incredibly unique style and sound, you’ll definitely want to hear this.

I Was a King come in next.  They’re from Norway and their names have symbols I’ve never seen before.  Maybe they’re not from Norway at all…maybe they’re from another planet.  But moving on, their musical genre…”shoegaze.”  Wikipedia says “shoegaze” is named so because “the musicians in these bands (stand) relatively still during live performances, in a detached, introspective, non-confrontational state.”  Does anyone else find that frigin hilarious?

I don’t have much to say about The Most Serene Republic…except that the track is incredible and has been on my “most played list” for quite some time.  It has a certain laid-back…almost dark quality to it…that I find absolutely hypnotic.

The Bilinda Butchers is basically a one-man band…with the help of collaborators.  They’re (he’s) relatively unknown…for the time being anyway.  The track is totally chill…and at one point sounds as if they took samples from “The Legend of Zelda” on Gamecube.  Was that a bizarre reference?  Yes, it was.  But if you’ve played “The Ocarina of Time,” you know what I’m talking about.  If you didn’t, I just stole a couple seconds of your life that you’ll never get back.

The Morning Benders have new music coming out in March.  This is one of those bands that I’m glad to say I found on the ground floor.  Since 2008, they’ve been growing and evolving in leaps and bounds, as far as I’m concerned.  Other recommended tracks:  “Dammit Anna” and their Fleetwood Mac cover of “Dreams.”

Rounding up this week’s show is Brooklyn’s (by way of New Orleans) Home Video…which sounds like a track lifted off a Radiohead album.  That’s really all that needs to be said.

Well, we’ve arrived into 2010.  Yeah, I know I mentioned wanting to have an updated/prettier page to kick off the new year…being that this version was thrown up so quickly…but I didn’t have a chance.  If it means anything, I have a hand-drawn version of what I want it to look like when it’s done.  And yeah, I know the facebook link picture on the side of the page is gone.  I don’t know why.  It’ll be taken care of when my drawings magically come to life.  But thanks for noticing…I’ve gained a little weight in the past couple months…do you want to talk about too?  Geez…get off my back.

Moving on…this week’s show.

We kick things off with a Passion Pit remix of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll.”  Long story short, I loved the original version…the YYY’s successful attempt at bringing a new, dancier sound to their music.  It’s no surprise this track was on everyone’s “Best of 2009″ lists…which is probably why it was fresh in my head this week.  I figured I’d just throw the Passion Pit remix up there…in case you haven’t heard it yet.

I found The Helio Sequence on some random record label sampler…and I dug it immediately.  The band is a duo out of Oregon…a very talented duo.  The drums alone blow my mind…but mix them with a killer vocal quality and super-layered sound mix…and you have one freakin’ awesome track.

I always hate comparing bands to other bands…but at some points, you just have to.  Via Audio’s ”Babies” immediately reminded me of Phoenix’s “Everything is Everything”…but with tighter jeans…and possibly hipper footwear.

Now…I hate to cop out and use ***’s when I should totally have the balls to use the full name of the next band…but I’ve worked under the watchful eye of the FCC for so long, it feels too weird.  Besides…it’s a slippery slope…I may never be able to stop…or to go back…as if I were “going black” (which I hear is impossible to return from).  Anyway, Starf***er also had a problem with this…being that they changed their name to Pyramid (or possibly Pyramiddd, with the extra D’s).  Being that I’ve wasted all this time writing about this, I’ll just say that the song is quite spectacular…and definitely worth a spin around your brain.

Next is The Veils…who I frigin love.  One of their first singles, “Livinia,” is one of my favorite tracks of all time and I definitely recommend (side note – I hate spelling that word for some unknown reason) you hunt that bitch down.  The vocals are so intense to listen to…he could be singing about a kitten sleeping on the back of a mean dog that looks after said kitten like it was its own…and I’d probably think it was something much more tragic and heart-wrenching.

By the way, my birthday just past…so it was only fitting and proper to play The Shaky Hands’ track “We Are Young.”  On a side note…since I’ve been 29, I’ve actually seen some grays pop up.   If I pull them out, will three more actually grow in their place?  Hey Mythbusters…test that crap.

Broken Bells is the new project of Dangermouse and James Mercer of The Shins fame.  Now don’t get me wrong, I like the track…but it’s missing something that I can’t quite put my finger on.  I always love every offering from The Shins because it’s stands out as something special among most of the other things I listen to…and Dangermouse usually gives things a touch of magic that I find very pleasant to listen to (Gnarls Barkley, Beck, etc.)…but this track seems to have lost the specialty of its parts (if that makes sense).  But alas…this is the only track I’ve heard by the duo…and I’m expecting great things from the album when it comes out in March.

I finished things off with Phantogram “Mouthful of Diamonds.”  I swear I put this in the show before I learned that they were the “Starbuck’s I-Tunes Pick of the Week.”  If you don’t believe me…that’s your hang-up…butthead.
