With eight concerts in four days, this last Florestan Trio festival in Peasmarsh includes cherished chamber music from Mozart, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Schumann. Czech flavour is evident with works by Dvořák, including the ‘Dumky’ Trio and the beautiful ‘Silent Woods’ for cello and orchestra, while Robert Philip takes a look at the ‘folk’ music influences on Dvořák, Bartók and Ligeti in his Sunday talk. Susan Tomes plays Ligeti’s ‘Musica Ricercata’ and we welcome back the brilliant Doric String Quartet for several performances including Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ quartet. The acclaimed Jaime Martín conducts the Florestan Festival Orchestra, and violist Lawrence Power joins Anthony Marwood for Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra. Lawrence also joins special guests, violinist Katharine Gowers and violist Rachel Roberts for a Saturday evening string quintet, and the late-night concert of Bruckner’s quintet with Anthony Marwood and Richard Lester. The festival ends in magnificent fashion with a finale of Beethoven, Bartók and Dvořák.

Peter Avis has been turning pages for Susan Tomes for over fourteen years. Here is a glimpse into his world:

“It seems a long time ago since I was turning pages at this year’s Florestan Festival and yet the experience is still very vivid. Although I have turned pages for Susan Tomes at Florestan Trio recording sessions, I have rarely done so in front of an audience. I have appeared at the occasional Christmas party and also at two or three concerts at King’s College School, Wimbledon, but this was the first time I had been asked to occupy the page turner’s seat during the festival.

It may seem strange to many of those who have been press-ganged into such an activity themselves that I quite enjoy page turning. I have certainly learnt much more about the chamber music repertoire from sitting at the bottom end of a piano than I have from being a member of the audience at concerts or from listening to recordings.

There are, however, several differences between turning the pages at recording sessions and at live concerts. At the former, the main aim is to be silent and to get the pages over with no crackling or rustling of the paper and no creaking of the floorboards. If something does go wrong and, heaven forfend, one turns two pages at once or knocks the music to the floor, there is the opportunity of doing another take, once, that is, the pianist has regained his or her composure. At a concert there are no second ‘takes’ and, if anything does go wrong, there are lots of people to witness the mistake.

During this year’s Florestan Festival my two main preoccupations were with my chair and with the number of repeats that were to be observed in the music. Actually, there was a third, and that was trying to get away with any problems that might arise. For the first concert I was particularly keen to have a good look at the scores in advance, especially as one of them was a new piece I had neither heard nor seen before. On that occasion all went well with the page turing but I had been so occupied with studying the score that I had omitted to check my chair which, as it turned out, had one leg shorter than the others. Thus it wasn’t long before I noted that every time I stood up to turn a page and then sat down afterwards it was if a man with a wooden leg was walking across the stage. At the interval I therefore searched in the vestry for a piece of paper that I could fold into a wedge and having found that it solved the problem, I kept it with me for the rest of the weekend.

One does have to concentrate pretty hard when page turning and to keep an eye on what is to come. The presence of silent bars for the pianist towards the end of a right hand page is a great boon for the page turner who has got slightly lost as it gives an opportunity of catching up again before action is again needed. It was not until the last concert of the festival that I got up with the intention of turning a page forward at a repeat mark in a Haydn Trio rather than back. Fortunately Sue made an appropriate gesture and I realized what was required but it was a nasty moment which I know was noticed by some, but not too many I hope, in the audience.

At the end of each piece, and particularly at the end of each concert, it was always a great joy to experience, by way of the audience’s tremendous ovation, the feeling of warm appreciation for the Trio and its most recent performance. It is a privilege to be present when the music making is of that astonishingly high calibre – and for me to have a grandstand seat.”

The first review of anything is always an anxious moment. Even though you know that the reviewer may turn out to be an eccentric loner, you can’t help thinking that the first review must somehow be an omen. And in this particular case I’d been waiting three whole months for the first official response to my book ‘Out of Silence‘. Individual readers have been in touch, of course, but individual readers confide their thoughts directly to me, whereas reviewers publish their thoughts to the wider world. So I was very happy this week when the first review, written by poet John Greening, appeared in the Times Literary Supplement. The review doesn’t seem to be available online, but you can read it here.

One of three works shortlisted, the composition was commissioned by the Vernon Ellis Foundation for the Florestan Trio, and given its world première at the Wigmore Hall last year, on the 25 November 2009.

The RPS Awards are considered the UK’s top awards for live classical music, and recognise the finest musicians, composers and organisations in the business. You can read more about the Awards and nominees here. The winners will be announced tomorrow, Tuesday 11 May 2010, at a ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel, London.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed for Huw. If he wins, he will be in good company. In 2000 the RPS recognised the achievements of the Florestan Trio with the Chamber Ensemble Award, and in 2006 Anthony Marwood was named Instrumentalist of the Year.

After an unnerving silence we’re glad to say that we have finally heard from Keturah, the Festival’s Projects and Concerts Manager, and her partner Ben. Happily, they successfully completed the Paris Marathon in four hours and 20 minutes, having picked their way through the discarded orange and banana skins of other runners, and even finding time to take in the Parisian sights.

Although they had wished for a better time, Keturah said “with nearly 40,000 runners, the roads were so crowded that it was almost impossible to do anything other than be carried along at the same pace as everyone around you. The psychological boost of running with so many others was huge; as was the effect of seeing hordes of people out to cheer you on. And the variety of entertainment that lined the streets was amazing: hunting horns, samba bands, burlesque dance troops, teenage rock groups; whatever the talent, hearing the noise up ahead was a real motivator.

We had agreed in advance that we would run the whole way together, and would only separate if one of us needed to stop. This pact, and our competitive natures, meant that neither of us would admit to feeling like walking, and we crossed the line together, exhausted but exhilarated, and a little emotional, 4 hours and 20 minutes after we had crossed the start line.”

We’re immensely proud of you both – many congratulations!

Have you ever wondered whether musicians have more than a little in common with the lilies of the field, who ‘take no thought for the morrow’? Do musicians float above ordinary life, enjoy it, or just endure it? In my new book ‘Out of Silence’ I’ve tried to give a little glimpse of how everyday life can provide me with images and ideas which are helpful when working on music. It’s a ‘pianist’s yearbook’, a kind of diary I kept for a year to show how music and everyday events interacted in my life. In case you’re wondering, it doesn’t overlap at all with the blog I write on my website www.susantomes.com.

I had a great piece of luck in the week the book was published: the Guardian newspaper published a full page of excerpts.

People who’ve tried to order the book say that Waterstone’s is being very slow, and that it may be better to try your independent bookseller, or the publisher, Boydell and Brewer, or two websites which offer unbeatable discounts, plus free postage: The Book Depository or Amazon.

It is often remarked that the behind-the-scenes team responsible for organising the festival seem to have an unlimited source of energy. Some of us practise yoga, some of us meditate, and some of us drink copious cups of coffee. And then there are some of us who find even greater depths.

Keturah Haisman, the Festival’s Project and Concerts Manager, has been quietly, but busily training for the Paris Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 11 April 2010. We wish her, and her partner Ben who is also running, good speed, good fortune, and a happy finish!

Visit the Paris Marathon website to find out more about the route she will be running. We’ll let you know how she, and Ben, got on, next week.
