Bonsai is a sweet and charming little girl, who has a vivid personality and a face to love. She wouldn’t be here with us today if it weren’t for a trip to the emergency vet due to her previous owner using a dog flea treatment on her. Bonsai started having seizures and breathing troubles because of the use of the wrong treatment, and she is alive and well, and with us today because of an emergency bill that left the owners with no choice but to surrender her to us. Not only is using the wrong treatment for your cats life threatening to them, the results can be very costly to you!

This blog is to stress the importance of using the right and best flea/tick treatment for your cats. If you suspect fleas, or want to prevent fleas do not run to the nearest store and buy the cheapest or fastest treatment. One such product is Hartz, which can be found at most grocery stores. Hartz products have a high count of kittens and cats having seizures and near death experiences, it is NOT a last resort! Do not use anything meant for other animals such as dogs, on your cats. This can be deadly, Bonsai can tell you so herself!

Here at For the Love of Cats we use a product called Revolution, which kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching. Revolution also prevents Heatworm disease, treats and controls ear mites and roundworms. Revolution is the best treatment/preventative for cats out there today. It is a prescription only treatment, however PetShed.com allows you to purchase Revolution with out a prescription.

The best thing you can do for your cats are to buy the best treatment out there ahead of time so you do not have a problem down the road, that would possibly cause you to act quickly and buy a cheaper alternative, or a holistic treatment. One of the many reasons is because they will not kill the flea eggs and do not attack the whole cycle of the fleas. (which can cause you to put more than directed on your cat in hopes to protect your home) It really is the best option for you and your pet to think ahead of the ‘storm’, prevent and protect now, don’t wait for a problem to arise.

The story of Roman is one of those rare cases of survival luck and love.

One of the volunteers for us lives on the east coast of Florida, and makes the drive over to For the Love of Cats, to help and share her love for the kitties. While she makes the drive across the state using E. Tamiami Trail as her route, she makes a routine stop at a gas station half way, in the middle of the Everglades.

She has come to learn of a mother cat who has lost litter after litter, due to the dangerous conditions of the Everglades. She resides here. It is a tough life out there for a cat to survive, let alone an entire litter of kittens. Hawks, eagles, vultures, and don’t forget the Florida Alligator, are all a threat out there in the great wilderness. After many attempts of trying to trap the litters, our volunteer was having no luck. By the time she would get back to the litter, they were all gone.

One of these visits, she spotted Momma cat with one kitten left. This kitten seemed to warm up to people, but not enough to get close to grab her. Many attempts were made to save this little kitten from the same fate as the rest of his litter, and finally with a little luck the kitten got close enough for our volunteer to grab him up and bring him here, to the shelter.

He became known as Roman. Roman at first was very shy and timid, as he knew nothing of an indoor environment. He was very sweet however, and won over the hearts of many volunteers, as his charming purrsonality was that of a champion. He did however have a hard time learning to socialize with other cats. He lost his litter mates at a young age, and was never taught socialization with other cats. It took Roman a lot of slow careful patience to trust other cats, but with constant work and dedication from volunteers, he finally became able to trust other cats and be around them.

Roman was recently adopted into a loving family, but now has to adjust to life in a house. He loves his family very much, and is very nervous to venture out into much of the house, calling a bedroom his ‘house’. While Roman was at the shelter, he fell in love with and took care of a little 6 month old kitten named Salvadore. He treated Salvadore like he was one of his lost (but not forgotten) litter mates. It was suggested to Romans new family that they consider getting another kitten around 6 months of age to help Roman adjust and be comfortable in his new home life. After little hesitation, Roman soon had a new buddy and playmate. They instantly fell in love with each other love to play all day long. Roman now has an example to follow, when it comes to getting used to a house (outside of a bedroom of course!) .

Roman is lucky and it was his fate that he found his forever family outside of the great wilderness that is Southwest Florida.

The New Year always brings with it our best resolutions. Whether it is to lose weight, get into shape or clean out the closets. For the Love of Cats would like to add one more resolution to your list that we hope you will keep. Resolve to have a plan. A plan for the care of your pets.

What would happen to them if something suddenly happened to you? A plane crash, a hospital stay, a bad accident? Is there a possibility that your pets will outlive you? For your pet’s sake, have a plan. Most of you have a will and probably a trust so that loved ones are provided for. What about Fluffy or Scruffy? Ask your family members or trusted friends and add to your will so that they are taken care of “just in case”.

Hundred of thousands of wonderful, loving pets are killed every year because their guardians did not have a plan in case of emergencies. You have friends, family, recreation, vacations, dinner out, parties and social occasions. Your pet only has you for its friendship, love and security. They give you everything they have without question and they deserve your attention to making a plan for their security if something should happen to you.

Disaster can happen at any age and suddenly. We adopted a sweet young cat, Sooty, to a family 3 years ago with 2 young children. Since that time, the husband and wife have divorced and the wife was living alone with her now early teenage children and Sooty. She had a massive heart attach and died at 48 years old! There was a plan for the children. She did not have a plan for Sooty. Fortunately, Sooty came back to us. For the Love of Cats has an agreement with adopters. For Sooty though, sitting in a cage surrounded by strange cats, kittens and people, is traumatic. Studies show that animals grieve in their own way. Cats have the mentality of a 5 year old child. They blame themselves. They are frightened, sad, depressed and lost without their loved one. With time and lots of love and reassurance, they begin to want love again and we can find them a new life much the way we all must go forward after losing a loved one. Sooty is one of the lucky ones. Most pets are surrendered at the county shelter where they sit terrified and alone in a cold cage until they are killed to make room for more or worse yet, thrown outside by un-compassionate relatives or landlords to take their chances against the traffic, weather and coyotes.

None of us like to think about the possibility of something disastrous happening to our lives but your pet needs your ability to love them beyond the grave by finding a person who would be willing to take your pet and love it as their own. Please make this your most important resolution to keep for 2012. Your pets will thank you!

We rescued a litter of 4 kittens about 6 weeks ago and one of them was a poly dactyl. This is the official description for a genetic mutation known as a “Hemingway” cat. Ernest Hemingway made this type of cat famous through his home in Key West which is inhabited by a family of cats who exhibit this trait. It is a combination of recessive genes that create the rather unusual multiplication of toes much like having blue eyes or blond hair for humans. The poly dactyl kitten from this litter, Teddy, with his multiple toes, now enjoys a wonderful loving home and his other siblings also have new homes as well. We were still helping the couple that feed the community cats in the area with TNR (trap, neuter, return) when we rescued another black kitten that must have been from the same litter we took in 6 weeks earlier. We thought his brother, Teddy, had lots of extra toes but Yogi has him beat by at least 4 more toes! Yogi has 7 toes on each of his front paws and 5 toes each on his back paws. Most often, poly dacty cats only have multiple toes on their front paws and normal back paws so Yogi has quite a special mutation!

At 12 weeks old and living outside without any real human interaction, most kittens this age are too feral(wild) to be domesticated but we always give the kittens the benefit of the doubt before they must be fixed and returned to their colony. Yogi was worried but never hissed or growled or tried to bite. With quiet words and slow movements, I reached for his back to give him a reassuring stroke and he just rolled upside down for a belly rub! This was a kitten that was so happy to be inside and cared for. Yogi was full of fleas so we had to wait for the Revolution to work its magic for 36 hours and then after a flea combing, just to be sure, Yogi was in our arms purring and adoring the attention! Every day he has demanded more attention and even though we have only had him for 2 weeks, you would think he had been home raised. Mother cats are responsible for this response. If the mother cat is truly feral, frightened or has been abused by people, they have a way of communicating this to the kittens just days after they are born. Consequently, if they are people friendly abandoned pets, they tell their kittens that people are good. Yogi’s mom is a sweet, shy abandoned house cat that is fixed now and she is lucky to be living in the yard of people who truly care for her.

For several years now, we have been talking to people who have lost their home and jobs and even though it is so tough on families, their pets have had the worst of it. The number of abandoned cats has risen from a lot to overwhelming. Hundreds of animal friendly people are caring for these new community members and we are helping to fix as many of them as we have funds.

Yogi is one of the lucky ones!

Funny how something can come out of the blue at you. Early this fall, I had an email from a lovely person who lives in Indiana. She makes the cutest little stuffed cat pillows all by hand and wanted to know if we would be interested in them. They were just adorable and so cute- we thought they would be so much fun to sell at our booth at the Farmer’s Market on Marco Island every Wednesday morning throughout the winter season. She sent us 2 huge boxes of them in all different patterns, fun colored button eyes and beautiful ribbon collars. There is lots of love and hours of labor that go into each of these pillow that are made totally by hand sewing and all for the benefit of our cause. Of course, the first round of pillows barely made it past our volunteers as most them sold immediately. I asked for more and also some Christmas patterns going into the Holidays. They have been a really popular item at our booth and they are selling for only $10! We even sold a pillow to a woman who ran into our volunteer on the other side of the island and she bought a pillow from her supply in the car! Too funny! All of the rescued kitties have a lot to be thankful for but it is so wonderful to have a person like this who gives so willingly to help our kitties far from her home. We are very grateful and feel so very blessed.

We were just sitting down to dinner Saturday night after a long day at Petsmart when Jim got a text message from another rescue group in Naples. A guy had been arrested and is in the county jail. He lives on Marco Island and his 3 cats, hairless rat and 2 hermit crabs were left in the apartment without food or water. The call for help originally came through the bailiff at the jail who, after speaking to the jailed man, found out that his animals would be in trouble because this guy was going to be in jail for 30 days. We were told that his apartment was unlocked so Jim went over and put down fresh food and water for everyone. I had to look up what to feed hermit crabs- I had no idea.

Our plan was to go back the next morning and collect all the animals and bring them back to the shelter and go from there. When we got to the apartment the next morning, someone had locked the door! Calls to the building manager and then to the condo owner gave the manager permission to unlock the door. Thank God! The apartment was an absolute disaster. This guy was in the process of moving so stuff was everywhere. One cat is a big, black and white male who was so friendly. The other two cats where purebred chocolate Persians.

The 3 cats were settling in at the shelter as Jim and I made calls to friends about the sweet hairless rat. “Of course, I’ll take him!” said Linda, our rat-loving friend. Another call to a volunteer and this sweet little boy was on his way to his new home in Naples. The hermit crabs were sleeping in my office when the bailiff called. His daughter loves hermit crabs so they came over that evening to collect them. While all this was going on, Jim went to the jail with a surrender form to have the cats signed over to For the Love of Cats for adoption. That did not go as well because the man refused to sign it saying that the black and white cat was the last friend he had in this world and he did not want to give him up. We found out later that the Persians belonged to his mother who had died several months earlier. Our call to Domestic Animals Services helped us with the process of dealing with inmates and we finally had the Persians signed over to us while we fostered them for 2 weeks.

Those poor little Persians. They are brother and sister, Java and Mocha, so frightened and nervous and terribly matted. It took over 5 hours to gently comb and cut those nasty matts away. Within days, they were both starting to relax and eat regularly. They are a beautiful pair and had to stay together. Finding them a home together would take some time.

We spent Thanksgiving with friends and while enjoying the feast, talked about our special pair of kitties. It is strange how events and people come together. A couple at the celebration had a single ragdoll cat and they had owned Persians for years but did not have any now. “You should meet them!’ Jim said and off we went with our bellies full of turkey and pecan pie to make the introductions. It was love at first sight! Little Java and Mocha had a hew loving home! Their new mom affectionately calls them the “twins”. The sister is a princess, of course, and the little boy follows his new mom all over the house just to be close. Their ragdoll and little Java are the best of friends. Both get brushed several times a day and are now spoiled rotten and just beautiful and happy again.

It was the best Thanksgiving ever!!!

We were looking at the photos we took of Zazou when she was first rushed to the shelter. I had forgotten how bad she looked with her broken teeth, goopy eyes, tar all over her and her broken leg and severe dehydration. Her white fur was yellow-she was quite the mess! We were all so excited to see her up and eating only hours later. At that point, we knew she had a really good chance to survive. After 6 long weeks, her leg healed enough for her to be rid of her leg splint- boy, was she every happy and so were we! After changing it every 2 days and the late nights that she would find a way to remove it and we had to rush to re-wrap it so her leg would not be damaged, I am not sure who was more happy about her progress. She only spent a few days at Petsmart before she was adopted by a family that had adopted another kitten from us last year. We will continue to monitor her progress and do a few more xrays to be sure that her leg is healing well but her outlook is bright. Her new parents say she is zooming around the house and giving them lots of purrs of happiness. All of our shelter volunteers played a big part in being sure Zazou grew into a sweet and adorable little girl despite her limited mobility and we are very grateful for all the time and love that was so freely invested to nurture a kitten who otherwise would never have had a chance to live a full and happy life and bring joy and love to the world. We want to also thank everyone who donates to our cause! Your money goes directly to helping kittens like Zazou and we cannot continue to save kittens like Zazou without your support. Zazou and all of our rescued cats and kittens say “meow-wow” to all of you!

Syrena came to us with 6 tiny newborns. She was turned into Domestic Animal Services nursing her little ones. Her left eye is sunken in and we originally thought it might be trauma but as a few days went on, we realized that it must have been damage from Herpes virus. Herpes virus is probably one of the worst viruses that we deal with at the shelter. The symptoms of the virus almost always affects the eyes with discharge and corneal ulceration and there can be lesions on other parts of the body as well as upper respiratory infection. Five out of her six kittens became very sick and we lost the 2 smallest ones almost right away. The virus is a real killer for kittens. The last little black and white boy in the litter was fighting for his life. His little nose was plugged up so he could not nurse from Syrena so he became dehydrated and weak. We warm soaked his goopy eyes, used a mild decongestant to open up his breathing, gave him fluids and syringe fed him around the clock . Little Hector wanted to make it and he was a little better each day. The morning that he wanted to suckle on his mom was a start to a great day! His sister Pearl started to develop a nasty ulcer on her one eye and we scrambled to get the prescription eye drops ($150!!) that would save her eye. Today, her eye is back to normal. Giselle, another beautiful little grey and white girl developed terrible lesions around her tail and genital area- so painful! We used the drops on her sores and they are all healed up now. One of Syrena’s kittens never got sick. Joshamee is the biggest kitten in the litter and he obviously has a strong immune system.

We have learned that once a kitten has herpes virus that they have it for life. As they grow into adult cats, any stress or pressure on their immune system will give them runny or goopy eyes or in the case of Giselle, she may develop small sores around her tail if she gets stressed. It is similar to herpes virus in people who get “cold sores” when they are stressed. Cats that show signs of having herpes virus are not contagious to other healthy cats so they can have other cat and dog buddies.

Syrena’s kittens are 5 weeks old now- running, playing and discovering the world around them- we are enjoying their antics now so stay tuned for more updates on these little cuties!

Zazou has been with us for 5 weeks now. How time flies! Her jaw has healed completely but her leg is still in a splint for another week. It is looking so much better and is healing well. Zazou can hardly wait to get it off and we are ready too because we have been changing it every other day. Zazou has a new playmate with Mariella, another kitten that is about her size and Zazou has learned to use her splint as a club so Mariella bites her tail during playtime- it is so much fun to watch them. Zazou has grown like a weed and weighs 3 lbs. She will be spayed in 2 weeks and then she will just about be ready for adoption. She has grown into an adorable little girl full of fun, spunk and purrs. Her fur that was so yellow and thin when she came to us is now full and white- she is getting prettier by the day!

It’s getting to be a busy time at the shelter. Currently, we are mostly stuffed the brim in kittens and their mothers, and we’re not expecting it to slow down anytime soon! One noteable family was a litter of kittens born just last Thursday (August, 11) right here in the shelter. The mama cat’s name is Mariah, and the kitten’s names are Gusty, Breezy, Arcus, and Misty! They’re an adorable bunch, and we can’t wait to watch them grow into young, adoptable kittens ready to be put into their loving furrever homes.

Poor Zazou came into us with a broken jaw, leg, and a nasty case of road rash. Now, he’s feeling much better and is much improved from his previous state. However, we are worried about a bit of a bruising on his stomach, so we will watch it carefully. He is getting is splint changed twice a week, and he is growing bigger and healthier everyday. Zazou has made a miraculous comeback against extremely slim odds, and we are all rooting for him to get back to a fully healthy and worry-free state.

Zazou’s story is one of a miraculous recovery from severely devastating conditions. She was brought to us by a concerned woman while we were having our adoption events at PetSmart. The woman said that she had found her on the side of the road, believed the was actually dead, and didn’t know where to turn to, so she took the poor kitten to PetSmart. Her left side was beaten up quite bad. Zazou’s left arm was broken, along with the left side of her jaw. We suspect this is because she fell from a high place and tried to break her fall with her arm, slipped, and landed on her jaw. She was also severely dehydrated, almost to a fatal point. Getting her re-hydrated was like trying to get a raisin to plump back up into a grape, but fortunately we were able to. Zazou is currently getting some much needed rest at the shelter with a splint on her little left arm, plenty of water, and food, which she’s even eating on her own now!

Petey was brought to us by a woman who found him in the middle of the road on US-41, just past Bayshore Boulevard. He was severely dehydrated, starving, and was covered in road rash. We either think he wandered onto the median by himself, or a very dark-minded person threw him out the window and left him there. But as with all of our stories on our blog, there’s always a silver lining. At this very moment, he is napping away cozily at our Shelter Manager Linda’s house, with a full belly and all the love his little heart can handle. We have no doubt that we’ll find a loving furrever home for him as soon as we put him up for adoption as he is simply adorable.

A Marco Island resident called us with a story that a van pulled up to a street corner and dumped 3 kittens and then took off. Madison was one of those 3 kittens. That same resident took in Madison’s sister into her home and made her a part of their family, for which we are very grateful. Unfortunately, the other kitten was lost, and we don’t know what ever happened to him or her. Luckily, we were able to find Madison, and we brought her to the shelter. Currently, she’s about 12 weeks old, and is very playful, bright, and gets along great with the other cats and kittens here. She’s got a great big purr and can’t get enough attention.

The mother of the Irish kitties was found over at Cathy O’Clark’s restaurant near Winterberry Dr. She must have been dumpster diving to find food for her kittens, and that most likely meant slim pickings and barely enough food to go around. She was spotted by a Marriott resident who saw the mama cat out of the corner of her eye, and proceeded to call us here at the shelter. The kitties were brought to the shelter and are being taken care of greatly, while the mother is currently at a nearby feral colony, set with food, water, and tons of new cat friends. Since they were all found at Cathy O’Clark’s restaurant, they’ve all been given appropriate Irish names! Meet Angus, Maureen, Erin, Clark, and Colleen:

Diane works wonders with animals. From horses, to birds, and our own cats here at the shelter. She has an amazing talent for communicating with animals, and puts it to great use. She had some interesting things to say about some of our recent cats.

Tangelo — Not too long ago, Tangelo had a person in his life he thought could trust and was a friend. Unfortunately, Tangelo was mistaken and the man slammed a pipe onto his tail, killing the nerve endings. She helped Tangelo with the nerve damage which is affecting his bladder, and she worked with him giving him healing energy and relieving his pain.

Minnow — When Minnow was born, she was one in a litter of three. Sadly, Diane said that the other two kittens from her litter didn’t survive, and she was then found and brought to the shelter.

The Lime Terrace Kitties — Diane said that the mother of the Lime Terrace Kitties was accidentally trapped in a delivery truck and was brought to Marco Island. She then tried to protect her kittens here by keeping them away from the yard of big dogs.

The cats and kittens here at the shelter thank Diane greatly for her beneficial and healing services. For more information about Diane’s fascinating services, please visit her website at www.dianeschuette.com.

Mona is the only surviving kitten out of a litter of five. Her mother, and fifteen other cats, live in the area of the Big Cypress Flea Market. We were there every day, trapping and fixing all the adult cats, and helping the lady who feeds them. One by one, the little kittens were disappearing. We think the coyotes were visiting every night. Finally, there was only Mona left. She came to the house for food, and she was scooped up out of harm’s way. She was half the weight that she should have been for her age, and was suffering from an upper respiratory infection.

She enjoyed a day at our “kitten spa”, which includes:

A complimentary shampoo and blow dry

Manicure and pedicure

Flea medications, testing and vaccination, plus…

BONUS internal cleansing program!

She’s now very happily growing and playing with her new friend Minnow.

When we found Tangelo, he was starving, teeming with fleas and earmites, and dragging around a broken, lifeless tail. Currently, he is recuperating from a nasty urinary tract infection and crystals, as well as a tail amputation. We’re hoping after he recuperates, he will be able to feel when he moves his bowels. However, the silver lining is that he is an extremely affectionate and loving lapcat of one and a half years old with bright spirits. We’re all rooting for him at the shelter and wish him a speedy and safe recovery.
