Whether it’s the increased use of cell phones by children, or the overall increase in cell phone use by adults, human exposure to electromagnetic radiation is happening in ways never dreamed of before. Very young children are using them, teenagers live on them—and some even sleep with them on their pillows, as cell phones are often used as alarm clocks.

What do these exposures consist of and what do they mean for human health?

Electromagnetic Radiation

• All cell phones emit a type of radiation called an electromagnetic field (EMF), composed of waves of electric and magnetic energy moving together through space. Different types of electromagnetic energy are categorized by their wavelengths and frequencies and comprise the electromagnetic “spectrum”
• Different radiation frequencies are used by different technologies.Radio waves and microwaves emitted by transmitting antennas are a form of electromagnetic energy collectively referred to as radiofrequency (RF) energy or radiation.
• The RF part of the electromagnetic spectrum consists of frequencies in the range of about 3 kilohertz (3 kHz) to 300 gigahertz (300 GHz). RF energy is used in telecommunications services, including radio and television broadcasting, mobile communication, GPS devices, radio communications for police and fire departments, and satellite communications. Non-communication sources of RF energy include microwave ovens, radar, and industrial uses.
• The complete electromagnetic spectrum consists of both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Non-ionizing radiation refers to any type of electromagnetic radiation that does not carry enough energy to remove an electron from an atom or a molecule. Sources of non-ionizing radiation include microwaves, radio waves, cordless phones, wireless networks (wifi), power lines and MRIs.
• Ionizing radiation has high-frequency waves with enough energy toeject electrons from molecules. It can damage the structure of cells in the body (including DNA) and has well-documented effects on human health. Ionizing radiation is emitted by radon, uranium, and other naturally occurring radioactive elements and is used for X-rays, nuclear medicine, and CT (“cat”) scans.
• Decades of research demonstrate that even low doses of ionizing radiation can increase the risk of cancer. The thyroid gland and bone marrow are particularly sensitive to ionizing radiation, especially in children. Leukemia, which arises in the bone marrow, is the most sensitive radiation-induced cancer and may appear as early as a few years after radiation exposure. Other cancers that can result from exposure to ionizing radiation, sometimes decadesafter exposure, include cancers of the lung, skin, thyroid, brain, breast, and stomach.While cell phones are not associated with ionizing radiation, their long-term risks are unknown.

Concerns over EMFs Exploded

Concern over EMFs exploded after Paul Brodeur wrote a series of articles in the New Yorker Magazine in June 1989. Because of Paul Brodeur’s reputation. his articles had a catalytic effect on scientists, reporters and concerned people throughout the world.

In November 1989, the Department of Energy reported that “It has now become generally accepted that there are, indeed, biological effects due to field exposure.”

The EMF issue gained more publicity in 1990 when alarming reports appeared in Time, the Wall Street Journal, Business Week and popular computer publications. ABC’s Ted Koppel and CBS’s Dan Rather both aired special segments on EMFs.

In addition to the long-term health concerns, buying a house with high fields will be an economic disaster. In a few years, when power line radiation is as well known as asbestos and radon, a house with high fields will be practically impossible to sell. Already there are hundreds of lawsuits regarding EMFs and property devaluation.

EPA Says the EMF Threat Is Real

By 1990, over one hundred studies had been conducted worldwide. Of these, at least two dozen epidemiological studies on humans indicated a link between EMFs and serious health problems. In response to public pressure, the Environmental Protection Agency IEPA) began reviewing and evaluating the available literature.

In a draft report issued in March 1990, the EPA recommended that EMFs be classified as a Class B carcinogen — -a “probable human carcinogen and joined the ranks of formaldehyde, DDT, dioxins and PCBs.

After the EPA draft report was released, utility, military and computer lobbyists came down hard on the EPA. The EPA’s final revision did NOT classify EMFs as a Class B carcinogen Rather, the following explanation was added:”

At this time such a characterization regarding the link between cancer and exposure to EMFs is not appropriate because the basic nature of the interaction between EMFs and biological processes leading to cancer is not understood.”

Curiously, this rather unusual logic appears on the same page as the following: “In conclusion, several studies showing leukemia, Iymphoma and cancer of the nervous system in children exposed to supported by similar findings in adults in several/ occupational studies also involving electrical power frequency exposures, show a consistent pattern of response that suggest a causal link. ”

When questioned about the contradictory nature of these statements, the EPA responded that it was “not appropriate” to use the probable carcinogen label until it could demonstrate how EMFs caused cancer and exactly how much EMF is harmful.

This explanation does not satisfy many critics who claim that the EPAs upper management was influenced by political and economic considerations exerted by utility, computer and military lobbyists.

Why Take the EMFs Risk?

It is important to minimise sources of radiation in the bedroom. You need to work on radiation prevention becauseyour body needs to be able to rest and recuperate while you sleep. This can only happen if your body is not disturbed by radiation. The human body also appears to be more susceptible to radiation while we sleep. And since most of us tend to sleep for six to eight hours a night, our body is exposed to radiation in the bedroom for a prolonged period. Given that this is the case, it is very important to ensure that your bedroom is a ‘radiation-free zone’.

There are several simple precautions you can take to minimise radiation in the bedroom:

• Leave your mobile phone outside your bedroom.
• Watch television in another room than the bedroom.
• Move your radio alarm clock away from the head of the bed.
• Remove plugs from sockets wherever possible in the bedroom.
• Forget about an electrically adjustable bed or a waterbed.
• Remove any electric blankets.

2. Reduce Mobile Phone Radiation

The provisional results of a study commissioned by the World Health Organisation suggest that there is a direct link between cancer and the use of mobile phones. Careful or limited use of mobile phones, as a radiation prevention measure, may help to prevent related symptoms.

• Use the speaker function as much as possible.
• Keep your calls short.
• Do not use a wireless headset.
• Use your mobile phone as little as possible.

3. Workplace Radiation Prevention

People often spend hours in the same place in an office. So it is also very important to take precautions in the workplace.

• Have the screen and the computer as far away as possible.
• Switch your computer and the screen off when you are not using them.
• Avoid using fluorescent and energy-efficient light bulbs, and lights with transformers or dimmer switches.
• Use floor coverings, wall coverings and ceilings made of natural materials.

What is Radiation?

(Electromagnetic) radiation is essentially energy that is transmitted in the form of electromagnetic waves or particles. Physical Ailments and Hypersensitivity

And recently, the European Council (EC) advised the EU member states to inform people about the risks of wireless Internet and baby phones. The EC wants a ban on WiFi and wireless mobile and DECT phones in schools because of the health risks for pupils.

Radiation is everywhere

Radiation is a Health Risk: An Inconvenient Truth

When I first studied scientific publications of radiation and health in 2003, I was amazed about the amount of scientific studies which had been published already. I asked myself, why is this not known to doctors, therapists and the general public, or are we all ignoring it because it’s inconvenient?

To be quite honest: when I realised that my complaints at work were related to radiation (this was in 1998), my first thought was “what a load of nonsense!”.
I was suffering from fatigue and headaches and had concentration problems and my complaints persisted. Later on, I realised I had to blame the sources of radiation (my telephone and computer at work). My symptoms were causing me stress, nausea and pain and became more frequent over time.

At a certain moment, I really couldn’t function properly anymore. Then I admitted to myself: I must be sensitive to the radiation around me. That was the first step to a solution, although fighting the problem was (and is) not the solution.

It took me five years until I was ready to admit that radiation influenced my health: it was a very inconvenient truth indeed…

Today, I recognise my own reaction in a quote of Schoppenhauer, a German philosopher:
“All truth passes through three stages: first, it is ridiculed, secondly it is vigorously opposed, and thirdly, it is accepted as self-evident”.

Acceptance of radiation as a health risk

Prof. Dr. Adflkofer was the leading scientist of a large European study who found that mobile phone radiation causes DNA damage. This study (REFLEX) was published in 2003. The first years it was ignored, then came the conflict (opposition), while  researchers were accused of fraud by the Telecom Industry. Today, years later, the opposition is dismissed and acceptance is arising: radiation can be harmful. And if you acknowledge the problem the first step to a solution has been made.

Now the World Health Organisation (WHO), the European Council and world leading scientists acknowledge the possible harm of radiation. It is clear that we are slowly moving to acceptance of the Truth that radiation influences health. It will take a couple of years until it is self-evident. Cancer also by non thermal effects

The turnaround is remarkable given the WHO’s earlier reluctance. It was previously thought that only a warming effect from radiation is harmful. Most countries took exposure levels into account by only studying thermal damage to health effects.
And most governments assume that as long as you are not heated (microwave effect) you can work and live safely with the radiation from masts and wireless networks around you. The WHO is now apparently concluding that you can become seriously ill from radiation even if it is so “small” is that you are not warmed up.

Now the question is whether governments will see the need to adjust the exposure so that no more towers will be placed in residential areas, schools and hospitals.

Radiation problem much larger than possible cancer

The focus is now placed by the WHO on cancer, while the problem is much greater and the effect of radiation much larger. The body usually gives many signals before it eventually gets sick, such as fatigue, headaches, concentration problems, stress.

Vitality and immune system

Radiation directly affects our vitality. Our defense mechanism is now 24 hours a day trying to keep radiation outside our system and is running “overtime”. That takes a lot of energy and you can notice that on your vitality.

Cell communication

In addition, radiation disrupts cell communication. Among other specific extremely low frequency ultra-weak magnetic impulses as a byproduct of high frequency radiation similar in shape, strength and frequency of the signals that cells use to communicate and therefore working so disruptive (in biophysical medicine also called “destructive interference”). Cells no longer recognize what is good or not good for them. The result is a lesser absorption of vitamins and minerals and a weakening of the immune system.
