Flyers Not as Different as I Thought

Last night at the bar I was trying to explain to Mrs. FGSB how different the Flyers lineup is going to be this year. I set her up for the big fall and then started going through the lines with her: Zherdev - Richards - Carter Hartnell - Briere - Leino Reemer - Giroux - Powe Laperriere - Betts - Carcillo/Shelley Pronger - Carle Timonen - Coburn Meszaros - O'Donnell/Walker Leighton Boucher It was then that she asked me what the hell I was talking about. I was pretty shocked. In a summer where it feels like so much has happened there's really only been 1 significant subtraction and 2 significant additions to the Flyers roster. Zherdev replaces Gagne and instead of only having 2 pairs of defensemen we now have 3 (one would hope). I would guess that this is the unit we'll be starting the season with in 2 months time. CapGeek has us at $300k under the salary cap - second closest to the cap without exceeding it behind the Bruins who still have a situation (not Jersey Shore related) to resolve involving Tim Thomas, Marc Savard, and Blake Wheeler.

Identity Crisis: Flyers Arena Changes Names, Again

For the billionth time in the last 14 years, the home of your Philadelphia Flyers has had another corporate name change . Dismantled are the signs that bear the title, “Wachovia Center.” Soon to be, um, mantled are signs that say, “Wells Fargo Center.” Of course, we the fans cannot go about calling our building by it’s full name. We need a nickname. But first, a brief look back at the history of the building. The first home... The year was 1996, and the original home of the Flyers , the Spectrum, was getting old. It was a new era, in which stadiums needed to have more amenities, to bring in more revenue, bigger clients, better athletes and performers. Eric Lindros was still early in his career, was expected to rule the NHL, and the team needed a new place to play. And that year, construction on the new building was completed, just in time for the 2006-2007 season. While under construction, the arean was dubbed “Spectrum II”. However, CoreStates Bank had the naming rights, and the CoreStates Center was born. Team owner Ed Snider proudly proclaimed that in the inaugural season, he predicted a Stanley Cup Final

Breaking News. Darroll Powe Signs with Flyers

Ok, I guess I could have been clearer with my title, as the fact that Darroll Powe signed a contract is no longer breaking news, but I love taking pot shots at people who race to break stories when in this day and age they all come down to a photo finish. The breaking news is that Darroll Powe is the fucking man. And that's only breaking news to some as you, as our pals over at Centaur Sleepover can attest to . (Yeah, I'm aware I've linked to that story 14 times already and I should just let you know I'll be doing it hundreds of more times before I die in a time machine body splicing incident.) D-Powe had 6 goals over the course of the opening 17 games of last season. He should have broken the 20 goal mark but a late November penile injury knocked him off the rails and he never really regained his scoring touch when he returned to the lineup. With a roster that features Darroll Powe, Daniel Carcillo, Blair Betts, Ian Laperriere, and Jody Shelley, the prize of playing on the 3rd line with FGSB best friend @JVReemer21 comes down to Car Bomb and Paur Haus. Both guys can dig pucks out of the corner and occasionally net one.

Hatcher, Roenick to go into USA Hockey Hall

USA Hockey announced today that former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman and captain Derian Hatcher will be inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame on Thurs., Oct. 21 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y.. In addition, former Flyers center Jeremy Roenick was also named to USA Hockey’s Class of 2010. “I was quite excited,” said Hatcher. “I got the call about 10 days ago. At the time they didn’t tell me who else was inducted. Then I was talking to my brother (Kevin) and he had mentioned that he was inducted, too.
