For me? I finished up all 100 puzzles in Sudoku Vol 2 by Will Shortz. I bought this puzzle book about a year ago and only advanced to the "Demanding" and "Beware! Very Challenging" levels early this year. I was introduced to this addictive game at my cousin's funeral wake by her friend...yes quite a strange start. Feels so "accomplished" to complete all the puzzles and I'm still craving for more...I now play it online here. Maybe one day I will pit my skills against xiao J :>

Belly Interest at the Market

It was a usual morning trip to the market with mil but the stall ladies selling noodles, fishcakes & beansprouts, etc suddenly took an interest in my belly! Both asked the sex and my due date. Both "proclaimed" that my baby's head has engaged and I'm ready for birth soon...both commented my belly looks "round" for a baby boy, almost expressing "disbelief" that I'm having a boy based on their "experience". Oh well, should I tell them I was showed the "wee wee" at my 20 week detailed scan? Surely not right...

xiao J at 37 weeks

My gynae has finally "spoken"! During our visit this Mon, 26-Nov when Xiao J is 37 weeks, he gave us the TMC admission letter and told us to go hospital immediately if there is any labour sign (spotting, waterbag bursts). He also said that I *have* to monitor baby's movements, average 10 per day. 2-3 weeks ago, he didn't encourage me to do that all!

Xiao J is getting cuter by the day...haha, I know all mamas say the same about their baby! Can't help it, he's adorable when he wiggles inside my belly and I can feel it clearly now that he is awake, active and vigourous more than before. I especially can't resist his sudden *strong* kicks - he doesn't kick so often and when he does, it is powerful and always unexpected :)

His papa is now back in Hanoi for his job attachment training with a Japanese specialist. He left on Wed, 28-Nov and will return next Sat, 8-Dec. I'm praying he can return as scheduled. I'm also praying that he'll be present during my delivery. I've asked xiao J to co-operate with me so we can both wait for his papa to return before delivery. I also told xiao J to move distinctively now that I must make sure I get at least 10 movements per day. Must say he's been a good boy throughout my pregnancy and more so now that I'm nearing the finishing line.

It's getting more difficult to sleep at night, nearly impossible to get into a comfortable position. My left ribcage aches badly so I can only sleep on the right side. Sometimes hubby snores and made it even more disturbing for me to fall asleep, together with the usual toilet breaks. When I'd given up sleeping, I would stacked my pillows to sit-up through the night. Mostly when I'm too tired and starts to lie down and sleep, it would be morning and I've to wake up! Sometimes the belly feels so tight and heavy from the Braxton Hicks that I can only sit on the edge of the bed until it subsided.

I wonder if I'll be happy when I regain my sleep again after delivery or would I be too exhausted waking to feed and change his diapers that it would not make a difference at all?

A Morning Call

It was so lovely to be awakened this morning around 7.15am by xiao J's little movement inside my womb. He is usually very still in the morning so I always presume he's asleep. Is he sensitive to me that he made only gentle movements with light prodding and some wiggling, just enough to wake me up? I can't remember if I said it aloud to him last night but I'd thought how wonderful if xiao J could wake me up this morning for marketing with MIL. It sounds crazy but I'm already thinking that I've a wonderful son!

A Night Out at Spizza

Had dinner at Spizza in Jalan Kayu with two ex-colleagues last night. We ordered:

Antipasti / Appetizers
Nerone, Breaded Crispy Mozzarella With Arrabbiata Sauce *a kind of spicy sauce

Pizza
Vittoria, Tomato, Mozzarella, Chicken Sausage, Mushrooms, Chili
Juliana, Tomato, Mozzarella, Cooked Ham, Pineapple

We all agreed that the very thin crusted, wood-fired pizzas tasted excellent. A friend who travelled to Italy years ago did tell me that authentic italian pizzas are thin-crusted unlike the typical thick, almost bread-like crust found here.

Cooking for One but Eating for Two

When you eat alone almost daily, it becomes a challenge to balance quick/easy cooking and tantalise the tastebuds with some variations so it doesn't get too boring. Why am I persistent in cooking for one you may ask? Well...I'm eating not just for myself but for my little one as well. Nothing is better to nourish the body and baby than a simple homecooked meal, I think.

Cooking with that in mind had greatly inspired me to cook more than I had ever done before and my cooking skills have improved alot in the process. I'm now better at modifying recipes to suit my own and estimating the seasoning required for a smaller portion. That said, I'm contemplating to order tingkat or home meal delivery for the next month until my MIL comes to stay with me. I need all the time to organize and get ready the baby's stuff and ample rest as I'm beginning to feel tired easily now that I'm beginning my 3rd trimester.

My Diner Meal

I'd my diner meal for lunch yesterday and a nice change from the rice, noodles and chinese cooking. I made myself a meat patty with minced meat, chopped onion and seasoned with salt, pepper, egg white and cornflour. The meat patty was to go into my Sunshine bread (didn't get burger bread as it comes in a pack of 4 that I can't finish now that I'm eating alone) topped with a tiny sunny-side up (leftover from egg-white), a slice of chedder cheese and 2 slices of tomatoes. I also made fries from 1 russet potato that didn't turn out quite as I expected (usually I buy Holland potatoes from market but bought the russet potatoes from NTUC) but I'm crazy about potatoes so it was just as tasty for me nonetheless.

For Hubby: Sweet and Sour Chicken

It was more than 6 months ago when I first spotted this Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe at my little cyberspot's blog. I'd always wanted to try it out and finally got the chance to cook it for my hubby when he returned from his overseas job attachment for home leave.

I was happy to cook this dish and added sliced onions, cubed tomatoes and cucumber. For the sauce, I used bottled Kee's Sweet and Sour Sauce simply because it was conveniently sitting in my fridge for a long time, untouched and we couldn't even remember which one of us had bought it!

Needless to say we both enjoyed our first night dinner together tremendously, especially after such a long time. The recipe called for grilling but I fried it on a non-stick pan instead (yet to master my oven after all these years...). It was tasty and satisfied my preggie appetite. I was looking forward to taste the lemongrass, shallots and garlic paste in the marinated chops as it had a very aromatic smell before it was fried. Unfortunately, I added too much salt and it overpowered these ingredients in the marinade.

Piggy Collection

I'm a piggy collector for more than 10 years. My piggy collectibles come in all shapes, sizes and materials such as coin banks, soft toys, display items, napkin rings, pot lid holder and magnets to name a few. Some I bought myself while others are gifts from friends who knew about my hobby.

My most recent addition is a children bedtime storybook, "Good Night Little Piggy" that I bought at Popular bookstore for the price of SGD18.91. This book is a wonderful way to share with my little one about the things to do when getting ready for bedtime. It has an adorable plastic piggy wearing a bedtime cap and glows in the dark (battery operated). It is very simple to prepare and cook. Slap each slice of porkchop with the back of a cleaver to tenderise it. Beat an egg and add salt and pepper to taste. Prepare a dish of plain flour and breadcrumbs. Arrange in the order of: coat (plain flour), dip (beaten egg mixture), coat (breadcrumbs) and into the wok to be deep fried (oil heated to approx. 170 deg C).

*Handy Tip: drop a few pieces of breadcrumbs into the wok and if it floats to the surface, the temperature is right for frying your chops!

It's a Brown Thing!

That's what they call "braising", to get that nice brownish coating on your food by slowly simmering it on a low flame in the sauce. I tried a recipe for Soya Sauce Chicken as part of my cooking for one routine these days (hubby is currently on an overseas attachment). I'm quite happy with the results except it was not salty so the light soya sauce and a little salt have to be added in my next attempt.

Confession of a Lizard (Dead)

I was a house lizard and a small one. I moved among the homes in different storeys of a block of flat where I inhabited. It's an urban jungle for me - concrete and all. I fed on other house pests as the humans like to called it and I was one too until that day.

I landed on the service balcony of a home whose owner had woken up earlier than usual that day and spotted me easily. I swiftly went into a defence mode and pretended I was dead and laid motionless on the floor. It seemed to work as the human did not take any action. I was happy and left alone for a while.

Not long after, the human returned and seemed to be observing me from a safe distance. I sensed the human's fear for my kind. Unfortunately, a lizard who was much alive could not keep still for long. I shifted a little and the human seemed to notice. I had deliberately made my movements weak and feeble, hoping I could pass off as being on the brick of death. The human came closer for another look. Fearing an attack or being caught by the human, I immediately sprang up my tail to prepare for autotomy and shed my tail in defence.

The human seemed frightened by this and retraced backwards. I moved more steadily now that I did not need to continue with my pretence of being dead, all the while under the watchful eyes of the human. I thought my escape was sure and eventual. I was overly confident of my victory. The human was smarter than I had thought and prepared to tackle me in a less direct manner. I smelled my prey and advanced towards it, totally clueless of what was happening next - my ending. I died inside a glue trap with a bait made for my kind. A lizard's life in an urban jungle sucks. I wished I did not land in that home.

A Flicking Incident

It was a typical hot, sunny morning and I'd thought I was only battling with the large amount of sweating that day! As I took my seat on the MRT, I soon realised that it was quite a squeeze between the two passengers next to me on each side and impossible to place my big and bright lime green bag on my lap. I relented to put my bag on the floor but just as I was doing so, I spotted "it".

It was a black, slimy insect between 3 to 4 centimeters long and was on my bag! I was in complete shock and could only react with a flimsy tissue I'd on my hand (for wiping my profuse sweating while awaiting the train). Little did I know it would be used for another purpose - to flick "it" away from my bag. The attempt was as flimsy as the tissue. Not only was I unsuccessful in chasing it away, it swiftly moved closer to me by resting on the zipper to my bag!

I soon realised that I'd drawn the unwanted attention of the passengers seated on my side and the opposite as they watched while I was terrified by and helplessly trying to get rid of it. Perhaps this was needed to spur me to a better way of resolving the situation and saving myself from greater embarrassment. I instinctively took out a harder object this time - the farecard lying inside my trouser pocket. Years of experience had taught me to always have a Yellow Pages classified book in the house and it need not be the latest copy. Household insects always seemed to take pleasure in surprising and finding me in compromising moments. It was a necessary weapon to protect myself and terminate such insects swiftly and with as little direct and close contact as possible. By far, this had to be the smallest hard object I'd used to kill an insect and it intensified my fear but I'd a resolute mind that it must be gotten rid off somehow.

Fortunately, the small farecard did its job and I finally flicked it away and it quickly went under the seat. My ideal would be for it to go to the next compartment or the opposite side where I could safely see if it would head towards me again. I'd my legs raised up for a few stations and kept it so until I couldn't hold it any longer. The thought crossed my mind to to alight at the next station to ensure that it would never crawl on me but my pride kept me firmly seated and dismissed my irrational fear. When the passenger on my side alighted, I instinctively scrutinised her from top to bottom and to my relief (oh my...what am I saying), "it" had found a new host and was comfortably settled on her skirt. The episode finally ended and I relaxed to enjoy the rest of my journey.

Like me, you would have thought that was the end. It wasn't, otherwise I would not have woken up at 4+am to write this post. Later that night, the flicking incident replayed in my mind and somehow "it" became a familiar but unknown creature. Being 3 months pregnant and losing my memory as a result of my pregnancy, I was disturbed but could not recall why I found "it" familiar. I swept the thought aside and it must have rested in my subliminal mind. I was aroused from my sleep at about 4am this morning when I finally recalled I'd killed "it" in my house before.

A New Beginning!

Need I say more? No words can describe how I'm feeling now. Too elated to speak even. I trembled as I took the test at 10+am and trembled more as I waited. When it didn't take long to see a strong +ve, I was speechless with shock and joy! I remembered how I felt the past two times (yes only...one was years ago and the other about 1 or 2 months back) when I took the home pregnancy test - trembling with excitement and anticipation and a BIG disappointment after that. You almost always didn't believe the result, strange hor...it's like this whether it was a -ve or +ve, haha (now I can laugh at it!).

The next thing I did was to cry as I prayed and thanked God for his wonderful blessing. It was a test of faith and God showed me His faithfulness, mercy and loving kindness. I read the Bible and by instinct knew my baby was a "boy" and stumbled upon the name "Joel". Anyway, I couldn't find any suitable girl name starting with "J".

I was undecided to re-affirm this result at our neighbourhood clinic but when it rained very heavily after mid-noon, I decided to do it later in the evening when hubby returned home from work. I deliberately not tell him anything during the day. He said later that he was worried when I told him I needed to see the doctor before we'd our dinner. He thought I must be seriously ill to suggest something like that, so unlike my usual self.

I can't remember if I told him the truth before we entered the clinic or while waiting in queue or not until I told the doctor my purpose when we're in the consultation room! I took a 99.99% accurate test strip that double assured us the positive result - yes, we're parents indeed! For the first time, that doctor who usually gave very brief consultation, spent quite a long time sharing our joy and chatting some basics of pregnancy like safe period of travel and looking for a gynae, etc. Overjoyed and still very much shocked, we both couldn't finish our chap chye rice dinner that night.

When we got home, I'd hubby broke the news to my parents and his parents. I'm not very good with such things even though I know this should be easy since it's the news my parents have been waiting for so long. The only person I broke the news personally to was my best friend and secret sharer, and now godma to my son! I promised she would be the first to know. I sms-ed if I could call her and told her over the phone. Of course she too, was overjoyed and it felt really good to share this news with her for she's someone who knew very well what it took for me to get to this point in my marriage.

Of Rice Vermicelli & Pork Ribs Soup

A recent sudden craving for economical bee hoon, ("rice vermicelli") commonly eaten by locals here for breakfast. Essentially this is just plain, dark fried bee hoon. Depending on the stall you buy from, it may have bean sprouts or cai xin (mustard green) and you can add-on items (extra charge of course) such as fish cake, tau kwa, chinese sausage, luncheon meat, etc. I used our local "Chilli Brand" of rice vermicelli for excellent result, always.

my version with just bean sprouts

<a title="MIL's richer version with cai xin (mustard green), bean sprouts, carrots, fish cake and prawns. I couldn't resist the sweetness of this simple soup! I was inspired by this website, "www.chinese-soups-recipes.com". I used "lengkut" (soft bones) for soups as it wouldn't have scum and the meat wouldn't turn tough after cooking.

Pork Ribs Soup with Potatoes, Carrots, Meatballs and Onion

Free Wireless Broadband by Google TiSP

Why should I switch to Google TiSP?

It's fast. The past 2 months had been the Chinese New Year hype and spending it at in-laws in Penang, long-time best friend's visit to Singapore with hubby and falling terribly sick. I'd all the flu symptoms: inflamed/sore throat, blocked and running nose, fever and cough (still coughing a little). It had to be one of my most unforgettable moments of falling sick and I was feeling irritable and hopeless with the awful side-effects of being drowsy and weak from the medication. Enough ranting...

My comeback entry is about a cable tv progam on Channel 49, "料理美食王" / "Good Food" that I enjoying watching. I may not fancy all the recipes but I love the cooking tips that are shared during the program. Finally googled for its links today. The recipes are featured in "东风" / "Azio" website and you can view short video clips in its vlog. Thousands of people turned up and gathered together to sing their hearts out to the tune of many familiar and mostly chinese local songs from the past (xinyao) and present.

I'd a *bonus* when a mysterious guest appeared among the crowd...Liang Wern Fook (梁文福) - oh my, it'd been my teenage dream to see him in person but he's always very elusive and rarely appeared in public performances after he turned to teaching. The batter marinade makes the chicken wings very tasty and meat remains tender and juicy.

A great tip to share with any novice cooks like me (I learnt from cooking programs over tv/cable)... Dip abit of the batter into your heated wok/pan and if it floats immediately to the surface, the temperature is right! I can't recount how many times my deep fried dishes have failed due to the incorrect oil temperature in my wok.

Did you notice that Julia's recipe calls for the seasoning to be added into the egg mixture before mixing with the chicken wings? Usually, we tend to marinate the meat first before coating into egg/batter mixture. The reason for this is so the meat will not be too salty (also learnt this great tip from cooking programs).

Now you've everything needed to cook "finger-licking good" fried chicken wings!

Justice and Women's Rights

I watched this BBC documentary yesterday afternoon over cable. It was a disturbing real story about a 16-year old teenage girl, Atefah Sahaaleh who was hanged Iran's Sharia law for a crime against chastity. She was sexually abused by a taxi driver but was accused of immoral behaviour by the moral police. Sexual consent in Iran is 9 years old. You can also read this news in BBC's website.

I'd briefly studied about the emancipation of women in English literature and General Paper during my Pre-University days but it didn't touch any chord then. I'm not about to turn revolutionary but I'm more appreciative of the efforts made by women before my time. Had it not been for their vision and fight, it wouldn't be possible to enjoy such rights that now seemed so obviously natural. Yet, as these true stories tell us - not all mankind are equal and in the lesser parts of the world, some women are still being tormented, their voices unheard and suffering from injustice accorded by the society they're living in.

I was reminded of another story from a photographic installation (there was also a videoclip) in the Belief Exhibition, Singapore Biennale 2006 - Belief, and Practices: Justice for Noorjahan by Shahidul Alam. A woman, Nurjahan Begum lived in a village in Bangladesh and had re-married after being left by her husband. However, she and her second husband were stoned and she also later committed suicide (ordered to die on her own) as part of the punishment for re-marrying. The re-marriage was not acknowleged after the iman who had earlier been consulted by the woman's father, revoked his decision to annul the first marriage.

Project K

That's what I'm calling the clear-out and clean-out task for our kitchen this Chinese New Year. I started Project K last Friday, 19 Jan after recovering from my flu and cleaned the lower cabinets. With hubby's help, we managed to complete most of the cleaning task over last weekend. What's left would be the cabinet storing our pots and pans, sink, fridge and walls...yay!

Before I started Project K, I...

Baked blueberry muffins at 5.30am on Wed, 17 Jan for a good friend's birthday breakfast. I used Betty Crocker's muffin mix. I only added 3 ingredients: eggs, milk and vegetable oil and prepared in 3 simple steps. I did over-bake the muffins a little though...slightly more brown. Loved the can of blueberries that came with the mix.

Wrapped and cooked Jiaozi for dinner on Thu, 18 Jan. While clicking randomly, I came across the recipe for Pineapple Tarts. Salivating at the tarts and marvelling at how the step-by-step guide with photos made the process of making it seemed so easy. It's not easy for me because my baking episodes nearly, always turned disaster. If I count my attempts, I only have my banana cake to say I actually baked at all! I'm tempted to try the pineapple tarts so maybe, I should not just dust and clean for this Chinese New Year.... and I'm not making any progress with my spring-cleaning yet :(

Strangely, I'm hungry easily when sick (flu) while most would lose their appetite. Despite my throat turning sore gradually, I was undeterred to cook fried rice and eat it for my lunch with leftovers for dinner today! I know heads would shake about eating oily stuff when one isn't feeling well but it's my favourite food and for some unexplained reasons I'm craving for it. I'm thinking about the seafood fried rice with a garlicky (correct spelling?) flavour and fried with mixed vegetables (carrots, corn and peas), eggs and prawns...

Another stranger chatted with me at the market and it was at the veggie stall again! It was an indian lady who asked for my opinion this morning. I would rather believe she was looking to chat with someone who could speak English than perceiving I'm seasoned at marketing? Anyhow, I've no idea about that "thing" she was asking about. It's like a very small version of a turlip and she wanted to know if the bigger or smaller sized ones were better. She further explained it's good for cooking with chicken, tasted like potatoes and a seasonal item only sold during the Chinese New Year period. hmmmm... should have taken a pic with my handphone camera and post here for anyone to unravel the mystery about that vegetable.

Da San Ba: Macau's Famous Almond Cookies

My elder sis gave us a box of almond cookies from her recent trip to Hong Kong. According to her, the almond cookies had the good, old traditional taste, unlike the more refined taste of later brands. I'm not a fan of anything almond and was skeptical when she raved about those cookies. However, my first bite melted my skeptism, it was yum and addictive! Initially, I thought the crumbly texture would get stuck on my tooth and gum. Interestingly though, it later melted away slowly and only a slight twinge of almond flavour lingered inside my mouth.
