Synopsis: The film explores adolescent issues through the minds of three friends and their reactions after a boy named Rudy Carges (Conor Donovan) dies in a tree house set on fire by local bullies Jeff and Kenny.
The boy's twin brother Jacob, a boy with a huge birthmark (also played by Donovan), decides to seek revenge against the bullies. Leonard (Jesse Camacho) who's overweight, survives the tree house fire but loses his sense of taste and smell. This prompts him to go on a diet, which isn't welcomed by his obese family. The boys' female friend Malee (Zoe Weizenbaum) tries to befriend an adult named Gus (Jeremy Renner), a grief-stricken patient of her therapist mother, Carla (Annabella Sciorra). Jacob's family falls apart after the death of his brother. But shortly after, his parents adopt a boy so Jacob won't feel alone. Meanwhile, Malee sees Gus as her "soul mate". She sneaks into his house one night to find him grieving. Afraid to confront him, Malee steals his gun and leaves...

Jacob frequently visits Jeff and Kenny, who are serving time in a juvenile hall. Jacob initially threatens them until one day Jeff commits suicide, and Jacob befriends Kenny. Meanwhile, Leonard's father decides to take his sisters to Florida instead of Leonard (who would usually go) as a form of punishment for Leonard dieting. Leonard decides to force his mother to lose weight by trapping her in the cellar. They both end up in the hospital after a gas leak in their home. Next, Jacob and Kenny plan an escape out of town. Malee visits Gus and removes her clothes in an attempt to seduce him. Instead, Gus calls Malee's mother to come and pick her up. The next day, Gus explains to therapist Carla about the last fire he ever fought (which involved killing an injured little girl, upon the girl's request), claiming that Malee wanted him to take her pain away, upon already knowing she had a crush on him. The night of escape for Jacob finally comes and he meets up with Kenny. Jacob insists on going through a construction site which he says is a secret route. Once there, Jacob points a gun at Kenny (the same one Malee had stolen from Gus) and tells him that he had it coming before shooting him dead. Jacob buries the body and leaves.
After the vengeance, Jacob now accepts his adopted brother. Malee begins visiting her estranged father, and Leonard's family finally starts eating healthy.

This is director Lee Yoon-ki's debut and it is his best film. If you don't like slow-paced character studies this will bore you, but if you do, this is a winner. Kim Ji-su absolutely nails the part of a 29 year old post office worker who has retreated into the safety of a completely solitary and mundane lifestyle as the result of some trauma from her past.

rthouse films often treat this kind of alienation in an aggressive manner focusing on the results instead of delicately observing the rituals. This Charming Girl is a tender film whose portrait is so clear you will shake with the same trepidation Jeong-hae does as she participates in everyday activities like buying shoes or eating out with friends.

Shadows in the Palace (궁녀 - Goongnyeo) is a 2007 South Korean film directed by Kim Mee-jeung. This is Kim Mee-jeung's first feature film, but she has previously worked as part of the directing staff in The King and the Clown (2005) and Shadows in the Palace was filmed on the same set as the The King and the Clown. The movie is a fictionalized account of gungnyeo, court maids during South Korea's Joseon era.

Synopsis: The film is set amongst a group of gungnyeo, or palace women in Korea during the time of the Joseon dynasty, and is primarily about the hidden dynamics that unfold between them. Sworn into secrecy, submission, and celibacy, the women of the palace officially devote their lives to the well-being of the royal family. Currently, the kingdom has no heir to the throne, and at such a time, the royal concubine Hee-bin (Yun Se-ah) has given birth to a son. The queen mother wishes for the queen to adopt the child as her own, but Hee-bin hesitates proceeding with this, fearing she will be disposed off once the adoption is official.
One morning, as the court maids go about their work, one of them, Wol-ryung (Seo Yeong-hie), also Hee-bin's most trusted maid, is found dead, hanging from the rafters of the palace roof. Initially assuming it to be suicide, Chun-ryung (Park Jin-hie), the royal medic, discovers as she proceeds with the autopsy that Wol-ryung was actually strangled. She also discovers that there are signs that the maid had given birth at some time in the past, which would have been absolutely forbidden under palace rules. Ignoring orders from her superiors to wrap up the case quickly, Chun-ryung sets off in search of answers...

Amidst a tangled web involving suspicion of Wol-ryung's involvement in an affair with a teacher at the nearby school, the torture of a mute court maid, a beheading, and finally the records of the king's nightly visits to his concubine, an elaborate scheme spear-headed by Hee-bin's advisor transpires, where Wol-ryung was chosen to bear the crown prince, and later murdered to hide the truth of the baby's origin. When exposed, the advisor imprisons Chun-ryung, overpowers Hee-bin and makes off with the baby. She is however intercepted in the forest by the ghost of Wol-ryung, and is murdered. The ghost later also visits the royal palace, and kills the queen mother, thus removing the last obstacle between the crown prince and the throne.
The baby is later discovered in the forest by Chun-ryung. The next day, as the palace women mourn the death of the queen mother in white robes, they simultaneously also witness the coronation of the new prince in the arms of Hee-bin and the transfer of power to new hands.

Exotica is a 1994 Canadian film set primarily in and around the Exotica strip club in Toronto, Canada. It was written and directed by Atom Egoyan. The 'Exotica' is a nightclub on the outskirts of Toronto, where Eric, DJ and MC, watches nightly as his ex-girlfriend Christina performs. Watches jealously, especially as far as the extra attentions regular customer Francis garners are concerned. Synopsis: Exotica presents a disparate group of characters whose lives are interconnected through the Exotica nightclub. Christina (Mia Kirshner) is an exotic dancer at Exotica, owned by Zoe (Arsinée Khanjian). Eric (Elias Koteas) is the club's DJ, and Christina's former boyfriend. Francis (Bruce Greenwood) is a customer who comes in nightly and always has Christina - dressed in a schoolgirl uniform - give him a private dance, which seems to inspire Eric's jealousy.
In his professional life, Francis is a tax auditor for Revenue Canada, and Thomas (Don McKellar) is a latent-gay pet store owner whose books of account Francis is auditing pursuant to a suspicion of Thomas running an illegal import business with revenues of $200,000 per year.
Francis is eventually banned from the club when Eric manipulates him into touching Christina during one of her dances (which is against the rules of the club). Around the same time, Francis discovers illegal activities in Thomas' financial records, and forces Thomas to get involved in his conflict with Eric - and we eventually learn that Francis' obsession with Christina has much more complex roots than it first appears. The film's final scene, set many years before the others, also drastically reconfigures the viewer's understanding of the characters, especially Christina.

Awards
At the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, Exotica was nominated for the Palme d'or, and won the FIPRESCI Prize. Don McKellar was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 1996 Chlotrudis Awards for independent film. Exotica won Best Foreign Film from the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics in 1995. At the 1994 Genie Awards for Canadian cinema, Exotica won Best Motion Picture, as well as awards for the best screenplay, direction, music, costume design, cinematography and production design. Don McKellar won the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Exotica was named Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival. To judge from his own account, Egoyan was quite amused by an unlikely award that this film won: the Adult Video News award for Best Alternative Adult Film of 1996.

Anche libero va bene (English: Along the Ridge) is an Italian movie directed by Kim Rossi Stuart, who also wrote the screenplay in collaboration with Linda Ferri and Francesco Giammusso. Alessandro Morace, who played the problematic boy around which the plot revolves, received a Best Actor award at the 2006 Flaiano Film Festival for the role of Tommaso (Tommi) Benetti in 2006. Tommi (11) and his slightly older sister Viola live in the city with their father. They cope with being a single parent family until their mother shows up, having disappeared without trace - not for the first time, we soon learn. These are the four protagonists in a bittersweet portrait of their ongoing struggle with love, friendship, puberty and life in general.

Synopsis: Actor Kim Rossi Stuart makes an impressive directorial debut with this film. Stuart began his acting career as a child actor and probably from that experience he gets the most from his two young actors in the principal cast who are making their acting debuts on film. Stuart casts himself as Renato who is a single father raising a son, Tommi (Allessandro Morace) and a daughter, Viola (Marta Nobili). This is a macho dominated family unit with all the pressure put on Tommi from his father Renato who wants to live his own childhood through Tommi and dominates and supersedes Tommi's own ambitions...

Sister Viola kind of gets a free pass to skate through life from Renato. We soon learn that the children's mother Stefania (Barbora Bobulova) is very much alive as she repentantly returns to ask to be once again accepted into the household. She apparently has a history of extra-marital affairs but again in the macho society of this film there is no contesting child custody or the home to live in on her part. Renato has the ultimate say if she can stay or leave and the home and children are his. Both parents obviously love their children but both have emotional problems. Stefania as the straying mother and housewife and Renato who is a fun and creative guy but his broken marriage eats at him and he flares up at the children but also lovingly plays around with them like a kid himself. His do-it-my-way attitude spills out to his work environment also as a freelance film cameraman and causes further problems for him. The title Along the Ridge comes from the building rooftop where Tommi keeps a secret hiding place precariously perched at the edge of a steep roof high above the street below. Good story from Linda Ferri, Francesco Giammusso, Federic Starnone and Stuart with excellent cinematography from Stefano Falivene.

Santosh Sivan's "Tahaan (a boy with a grenade)" is a fable-like journey of the eponymous eight-year-old boy, whose life revolves around the pursuit to find real purpose in his little world. It's a heartwarming story of the friendship between this young Kashmiri boy and his faithful childhood companion, a donkey.

Tahaan lives with his grandfather, his mother Haba and older sister Zoya in the serene meadows of Kashmir. They all live in the hope that someday Tahaan's father, who's been missing for over three years, will return. The death of his grandfather leads the local moneylender Lalaji and his manager Kuka to take away the assets of the family, including their pet donkey Birbal, against repayment of a pending loan. For Tahaan, bringing his favorite donkey Birbal back home becomes the sole purpose in life.

But Tahaan is also the story of present-day Kashmir and cross-border terrorism, and of course, of the test that the little boy is put to in the name of unconditional friendship. There's a scene in Santosh Sivan's Tahaan in which a group of Kashmiri kids play make-believe militants. That scene, more than any other scene in this film, succeeds in demonstrating just how well the director understands the themes he's dealing with in his new film.

After watching the Satyajit Ray films, The Apu Trilogy (1955-1959) and Devi (1960), I decided to check out some of the realistic films directed by other Bengali filmmakers during that same era. One of the films I found was Do Bigha Zamin, which won the International Prize at the 1954 Cannes Film Festival.

Although it's a Hindi-language film, and therefore technically a 'Bollywood' movie, the film's director Bimal Roy is from Bengal, thus the film has more in common with Bengali art cinema than it does with mainstream Bollywood as a result. The film does have a few musical numbers, like a lot of other Hollywood and Bollywood movies of that era, but what sets Do Bigha Zamin apart is its greater sense of realism. Beyond the few musical numbers, the film itself doesn't have much melodrama to it and there isn't much of a background score either, which is a good thing to me as a sappy or sentimental score isn't necessary for a film like this.

Do Bigha Zamin is very much a character-driven drama and the actors did a great job in portraying their respective characters. The performances which stand out most are Balraj Sahni as the farmer Shambu, the protagonist of the story, and the child actor Rattan Kumar as his son Kanhaiya. Nirupa Roy also gave a very good performance as Shambu's wife Paro.

As for Bimal Roy's direction, the film has one of the best depictions of poverty I've ever seen, covering both rural poverty in a Bengali village and urban poverty in Calcutta (now Kolkata), including the plight of street kids living in the city's slums. The film's ending was also powerful and it was overall a very moving film.

Forced by desperate conditions, Isvar goes to Calcutta to look for work and brings along his sister Sita and a young boy, Abirham. Isvar finds work at a steel mill near the Subarnarekha River on the outskirts of the city and raises the two children there. When Sita and Abirham grow up they fall in love and marry, and then move into the city. Communication dwindles between Isvar and his two former charges, so when Abirham dies in an accident and Sita turns to prostitution to survive, Isvar has no idea what has happened until it is too late.

Komal Gandhar is the second of the trilogy that started with "Meghey Dhaka Tara" and ended with Subarnarekha, which all dealt with the aftermath of the Partition of Bengal and the efforts of the displaced to cope with it. It is the story of a small theatre group. The members of the group are like an extended family We see the camaraderie, the interdependence and the passion of the group as a whole, even though the story centers round Bhrigu, the Director and the lead actor and Anusuya the lead actress and his muse.

They were two froups once, divided by opinion, when Anusuya, impressed by the passionate direction and acting of Bhrigu's group, decide to bring them together. The mutual attraction between Bhrigu and Anusuya is obvious and they are both warned by their friends to keep away. Besides Anusuya is engaged to an young man who lives and works in Paris.

The petty jealousies within the group leads to one faction sabotaging a joint production. The Group re-asserts itself and goes to the outlying districts to stage their plays and meets with success. Then suddenly, the internal jealousies and human failings come to the fore. Brigu and Anusuya are accused of amorality. The trust that was a part of the Group breaks down and all seems over.

The Group comes through again. Anusuya's fiance asks her to join him. She's torn between her loyalty to him and her attraction to Bhrigu. Will she leave the group and go away to search for her own rainbow?

Meghe dhaka tara is a film about displacement and exile. It is about the displacement of peoples who have been uprooted in the wake of India's partition which followed her independence in 1947. It is also about the exile of the classical, creative and feminine principles which, despite their nurturing potentials, find themselves being ruthlessly edged out of the socio-cultural space.

Meghe dhaka tara is a seminal film in the history of Indian cinema for more reasons than one. First and foremost, it looks at the cultural and political formations which the topographic break in the life of the peoples of India seems to put into a major crisis. The partition of India remains one of the most traumatic divisions of peoples in recent history. In also resulted in unprecedented diaspora. In the film the crisis, however starkly lived, is viewed against the evocative simultaneity of mythic presence. Even the bare documentative inserts of buildings, offices, pavements and roads seem to invoke a poetic conscience. It is not, as has been stated by many Indian commentators, a film that "returns to the epic." On the contrary, it is a work that definitively opens up a new cinema of the "grand poetic conscience." The epical references are not opened up for historical enlightenment but to deepen the very grain of existence that has become increasingly vulnerable. The film, therefore, addresses the question of nationality mainly within the modes of memory and melodic excess and disavows a direct referentiality and, hence, a rhetoric of identity. In a way, it marks the beginning of Ghatak's remarkable contribution to the rich Indian melodramatic tradition. He pushes melody into the space of memory; movement-gesture into the space of myth. It is also a film that pushes the debate about nationality beyond the realm of ideological certainties. Unlike a conventional epic, it dissolves facial iconicities into sound which works through a dialectic or relay between melody and dissonance. The dissonance and distortion flow from the state of imbalance into which the image has found a fleeting sense of home almost like the uprooted refugee. Almost the entire film is shot with a 16mm lens. The film again and again arrives at haunting close-ups till they finally appear as the masks of light beyond the reality of socio-political space.

Tareq Masud excels as the director of "Matir Moina". His early works on the glorious liberation war "Muktir Gaan" & "Muktir Kotha" - his other masterpieces clearly shows the rise of an world class director.Here he ables himself to portray the beginning of the revolution before the 1971 war with a cool picture of a village where religious strictness & openness both coexists and puts Anu - the central character with a different view. This is the real picture of a moderate muslim country like Bangladesh - where some people are regularly trying to shatter the image of the nice country.
