By Jim Fusco:

I love traditions. If there’s one thing you must learn about me, it’s that. I get unreasonably upset when someone tries to break my time-honored traditions. So, every year, I painfully wait until the day after Thanksgiving to listen to Christmas music. And, if you must learn a second thing about me, it’s that I LOVE Christmas music. Christmas songs are synonymous with family traditions. And here, I will give you a good rundown of all my favorite Christmas albums and songs, plus a little section on why I love Christmas music so much.

How Can Someone Love Christmas Music So Much?

Many people I talk to really don’t like Christmas music all that much, especially around December 26th. But, I have a few reasons why I love it so much. First, I make sure that I do not listen to any Christmas songs at all before the day after Thanksgiving. Why? Because it’s more special that way. I don’t get sick of Christmas music because I refuse to get into the spirit too early (like in October, as you see in all the malls). So, when the day after Thanksgiving comes and I get up super-early for those amazing sales, I’m all too giddy to play my first Christmas song of the season. And by January 1st, I’m usually pretty bummed about the fact that I have to wait another 11 months to hear my favorite tunes again.

Another thing I love about Christmas music: for the most part, they’re all happy! And even if they’re not happy (like Nat King Cole’s “The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot”), they have hope. After listing to that song, I can only imagine that the “little boy”’s mother re-marries and that boy has some happy Christmases ahead. I really don’t like sad songs. I mean, when I listen to music, I want to feel good. Give me a song about keeping the summer alive and a good guitar solo and I’m a happy person. And the innocence that you hear when the Beach Boys sing on their Christmas album- no drugs, no craziness, just kids singing and playing some really joyful tunes. You can’t listen to “The Beach Boys Christmas Album” without a smile on your face.

Christmas music is also timeless. It’s the one genre of music that crosses all style and age boundaries. You’ll hear teenagers singing to Elvis’ “Blue Christmas” and you’ll hear my parents rocking-out to “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band-Aid. What a season…

So, now you have some insight as to why I love Christmas music so much. But, you may be wondering- with all the Christmas albums and songs out there, what’s any good? Well, I’m taking a big leap here and making a Top 10 list of each of my favorite Christmas songs and Christmas-themed albums. It’s going to be tough, but here it goes:

Jim Fusco’s Top 10 Christmas Songs:

The Little Saint Nick- The Beach Boys: Even though I love the song at #2, this classic Beach Boys tune gets the top prize. It even won “Best Original Christmas Song” on our radio station, WCJM. The tune to this song is great, the harmonies are tight, and Mike Love’s vocals are spot-on. The instrumentation is sparse (it’s actually the Beach Boys playing the instruments), but that makes me love it more- it’s truly a band effort. And, I have inside information proving that Brian actually wrote the lyrics!

Santa Claus Is Back In Town- Elvis Presley: Hands-down, this is the coolest Christmas song ever. Over 50 years later, and this song still rocks. The groove, Elvis’ lead, the Jordanaires backing vocals, and that amazing piano solo prove that this song was ahead of its time. This is not only one of my favorite Christmas songs, but one of my favorite all-around songs, as well.

Baby Please Come Home- Darlene Love: The Phil Spector Christmas Album (”A Christmas Gift For You”) is an amazing album, as you’ll see it in my Top 10 list of best Christmas albums below. I love many of the songs on that record, but the final song, “Baby Please Come Home”, just wraps it all up (no pun intended). Darlene’s soaring vocals and that classic Spector production give me chills every time I hear it.

Don’t Need A Reindeer- The Moody Blues: I know, you’ve never heard of this song. But, trust me- you’re missing out. Off of their Christmas album from just a few years ago, this song has everything I love: a great tune, a good beat, great vocals, and a happy message. Please, do yourself a favor and buy a copy of this song!

Merry Christmas Darling- The Carpenters: Most people who know my musical tastes know that I’m not the biggest fan of female singers. But, you’ll notice that there are three songs sung by women on this list! And, again, that’s what makes Christmas music so amazing- it crosses all boundaries of musical styles. In this case, I LOVE Karen Carpenter’s voice. She doesn’t do too much. The chords are great in this song, too. Why isn’t it #1? One word: “Christmas-ing”.

Elf’s Lament- Barenaked Ladies: Okay, I’ll admit that I wanted to put “Footprints” here, but that’s a sad song, albeit great. Anyway, “Elf’s Lament” is such a fun song and gets you in the spirit very quickly.

On Christmas Day- Brian Wilson: I can’t tell you why I love this song so much. But, it’s just got a great tune, great vocals, and interesting chord changes. Brian sounds so young in this recording, even though he was in his mid-sixties. I wonder if anyone else notices the striking similarities between this song and “Bells of Paris” from M.I.U.?

Winter Holidays- America: Dewey Bunnell has such a gift of combining crazy inversions of chords and coming up with some off-beat songs. This Christmas tune is a not only a nice song, but gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling at the same time.

Hey Santa!- Carnie & Wendy Wilson: Why is this song on the list? Well, the late-80’s cameo by Carl Wilson was certainly a factor. The ending of this song is so great. This is another example of women who don’t do too much with their vocals- they just sing the song. And even though this song gets a bad rep, you still gotta admit it’s a catchy tune.

Run Rudolph Run- Chuck Berry: I don’t so much love this recording (Chuck sounds like he’s really phoning-it-in on this record), but I love the song. It’s classic Chuck Berry style and has some pretty nifty guitar work going on. I really started loving this song once we played it in concert and I got to do the nifty guitar work!

Jim Fusco’s Top 10 Christmas Albums of All Time:

Elvis Presley’s Christmas Album (1957- recorded in two days and only 6 songs, but man, this album rules)

The Beach Boys Christmas Album (everything from Al’s first lead vocal to Brian’s first solo performance)

A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector

Holiday Harmony- America

Barenaked For the Holidays- Barenaked Ladies

December- The Moody Blues

What I Really Want for Christmas- Brian Wilson

Our Christmas Gift To You- Chris, Jim, and Mike (that’s US!)

What’s It Gonna Be, Santa?- Chicago

I Wanna Be Santa Claus- Ringo Starr

I hope you’ve enjoyed my commentary and my lists. I hope to edit these as the holiday season goes on- remember, I’m doing this from memory, as I haven’t listened to any Christmas music yet this year! So, I’ll update the post as I see fit. Who knows, maybe Dylan’s new Christmas album will make the list! Yeah, and I hear Elvis is coming back to life this year, too…

By Chris Moore:

The best part about contributing to this blog is that, every so often, all the pieces fall together at just the right time. For example, I still have the remnants of a cough that just doesn’t seem to want to leave me entirely, yet I really wanted to record a new video for tonight. Meanwhile, over the weekend, I was listening to Jack Johnson on shuffle when this song — “Broken” from his Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies from Curious George soundtrack CD — and immediately felt the urge to learn and record it.

Fortunately, the register is fairly low and the chords are very simple, so this was a joy to lay down as a session.

Of course, every cover song music video is not without its challenges when it involves me…

The only difficult aspect of this song is that, although I’ve heard it dozens of times and could sing along to the chorus in my sleep, I really don’t know the verse. Thus, I put “Broken” on repeat in my car on the way home. After listening to it seven or eight times straight, I didn’t seem to be much closer to nailing the lyrics. Still, I soldiered on — I typed up the lyrics from the booklet and practiced a few times to the music. Finally, I practiced a few times on my own before I hit the “record” button.

And, a few takes later, you have a session to watch!

The reason I was listening to Jack Johnson in the first place was that Mike showed Jim and I his copy of En Concert, the new live CD/DVD, this past Thursday at wrestling. Based on my disappointment at his last record, I hadn’t purchased the CD myself, but Mike had nothing but great things to say about it, so it’s only a matter of time before I find my way back to the “J” section of my local Newbury Comics store…

Speaking of new music, I am wildly curious about tomorrow’s new Weezer release. The title alone has caused some controversy. Based on a recommendation from The Office actor Rainn Wilson (who plays Dwight Schrute), Rivers Cuomo and company titled their latest studio album Raditude. I’ve heard the first track, “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” and it may be cheesy, but it sounds great and it’s fun to listen to. That being said, the other titles on the album alone are enough to make one question what Raditude will be like — tracks like “I’m Your Daddy” and “Girl Got Hot.”

All I will say for now is that The Red Album seemed very weird at first, and it quickly grew on me. I was just listening to it this weekend, in fact, and realizing that it is truly one of my favorite Weezer releases. I can’t imagine that this new album will be up to that level, but I have promised myself that I will reserve judgment until after I’ve heard it a few times. Based on their incredible catalog alone, Weezer really does deserve the benefit of the doubt.

More on that next time…

And that about does it for me, at least for now. This week is crazy for me, as my grades are due this Friday. In addition, I have meetings today and now Thursday, a full day of professional development (i.e. no time to grade) tomorrow, and I’m monitoring the selling of tickets at the drama production on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Add in some wrestling on Thursday night and a whole lot a gradin’ goin’ on, and I’ve got one busy week! I am looking forward to the weekend, as I’ll be completing a swap with my former student Geoff — some Ben Folds for some Tom Waits. It’s bound to give me some more interesting listening and perhaps some more interesting Laptop Sessions songs…

See you next session!

By Chris Moore:

Sometimes, the big publications just get it all wrong.

In his Rolling Stone review of R.E.M.’s Live at the Olympia in Dublin, Will Hermes writes, “This two-CD/one-DVD document captures intimate, occasionally great performances.” He goes on to add, “If Michael Stipe sometimes sounds like he’s reading lyrics off his computer, it’s because, well, he actually was.”

If I have to read one more cleverly phrased review bestowing a mediocre rating upon a release I love, I swear I’ll lose it.

Live at the Olympia in Dublin spills over with positive energy, the kind of energy that leaves fans breathless and voiceless after a night of singing, screaming, and giddily laughing. Stipe’s voice is hardly robotic, as Hermes might have you understand. His vocals alternate between smooth and clear deliveries at some points, alternately cracking in all the right places at others.

And the computer is hardly a crutch. It’s more a means of on-stage schtick for Stipe and the band. It is apparent that he is getting a kick out of reading others’ interpretations of his eighties-era, admittedly very mumbled lyrics. (He has since come over to the good side, including lyrics in all R.E.M. booklets since Up.)

And it’s genuinely funny to hear him reading them, reflecting on them, and moving on to the present day, namely his evolved sensibilities and more recent material.

What really gets me is that Hermes refers to the tracks I had most looked forward to — the Accelerate outtakes — as “solid.” This is an overstatement. I was far from impressed with the outtakes, and although I had so hoped to tout them as the forgotten gems of their 2008 sessions, I simply had to admit to myself, Well, I suppose these guys knew what they were doing when they assembled Accelerate.

And that is precisely what has renewed my interest in R.E.M. I’ve always liked Stipe’s attitude, and I’m continually drawn to R.E.M.’s unique, raw-but-refined instrumental sound. And yet I’ve been hard-pressed to find any albums that stand out to me, certainly not enough to stand up to some of the great albums of all time.

Then, along came Accelerate.

R.E.M.'s "Live at the Olympia in Dublin" (2009)

Their 2008 studio album — their fourteenth at that — is a tremendous record. There are catchy electric hooks, acoustic underpinnings, great lyrics, and Michael Stipe’s perfectly ragged vocals seasoning and binding it all together. What truly distinguishes this record is the energy that simply oozes from the seams. And this doesn’t come across as some aging group of rock and rollers embarking on a pitiful attempt to recapture past heights — after all, R.E.M. never was known for being all that rocking a band.

Watch the music video for “Living Well is the Best Revenge,” and you’ll immediately observe the youthful, creative force of a group of men who love what they do. The song is performed while driving around in a car, acoustic guitars squeezed into the small vehicle, the steering wheel converted — while driving, mind you — into the percussion instrument of choice. It looks like they’re having a lot of fun, and that comes through more than anything else on the record.

Rolling Stone reviewer Hermes apparently longs for the days when “Stipe’s vibrato-seizure vocals and Rorschach-blot ‘lyrics’ clung to songs exploding at the seams.” He comments that, instead, “The stitching is tighter now, and drummer Bill Rieflin often holds things together too neatly.”

Say what you will about Rieflin’s drumming — and it’s not groundbreaking or award winning, but it gets the job done. I draw the line at his allusion-dropping, not-so-subtle riff on Stipe’s vocals, as if to imply that something has been lost.

If that’s true, then something has been lost on me.

R.E.M., as Live at the Olympia in Dublin continues to suggest, is more alive and well than they have been in a good long time. If living well is truly the best revenge, then Stipe, Mills, and Buck are bound to have the last laugh. Their on-stage personas, musical chemistry, and ability to dig deeply into their catalog to populate their shifting set lists — never mind their willingness to exercise their unfinished work during live, recorded performances — continue to breathe new life and vibrancy into all their work, both past and present.

If you’re ready to live in the moment, then you should really give these guys a listen.

Good evening and welcome to Thumpin’ Thursday! I hope you are well and looking forward to a nice weekend.

Today I bring a song by the Foo Fighters called “Miracle”. The song is among their more soft and acoustic album cuts of late. It really shows off their instrumentation skills as well as Dave Grohl’s versatile vocal abilities.

I feel sad saying it, but I do have to let you know what’s going on. First good news – whether you knew it or not but in a couple of weeks my life is going to change forever. Sadly, it is this reason that I am going to have to downgrade myself to “contributer” (which is kind of what I am already anyway). I won’t be able to post every Thursday, and there is no way of telling when Thursday comes around in the future whether I can post or not. When I can I will, but to be honest, there will be a handful of things that can prevent me from posting. I don’t want to be specific, but those who know me know what i’m talking about.

I have enjoyed being a regular contributor to the site for nearly 2 years now, and have recorded over 160 videos and amassed 170k in views (and rising at about 300-350 views/day). I know that this number won’t stop increasing even if my production of videos slows down.

I want to thank everyone that has visited this blog regularly in the past 2 years, and I want to thank Chris and Jim for bringing me along for the ride. It is amazing to look back at where we were when this blog started, and what our mission was. I’d say we have done a pretty good job of getting a following, and I hope you bring nothing but support and joy when you read our blog.

With that said, I will see you next week ideally with another video. If you have things you wish to pass along to me, please send me a private message or comment here.
