Avatars are popular as identification and with the service Gravatar it is largely used in the comment area of different applications.

WordPress allows the user some basic settings. For example loading a default or generated Avatar, if the commentator doesn’t have one.

Various themes have a standard Avatar to match the design. But even here there is a nice solution via a hook, which enables to add an avatar in the list of your backend to make a selection quite simple. In the following I would like to show with a short and simple code snippet how to add 2 new avatars to the array of WordPress.

You have to add this little function to functions.php of your theme and it will add 2 Avatar from your folder images of your theme directory. I suggest, that the Avatars have a size of 60 pixel.

/**
* add a default-gravatar to options
*/

if ( !function_exists('fb_addgravatar') ) {
function fb_addgravatar( $avatar_defaults ) {
$myavatar = get_bloginfo('template_directory') . '/images/avatar.gif';
$avatar_defaults[$myavatar] = 'people';
$myavatar2 = get_bloginfo('template_directory') . '/images/myavatar.png';
$avatar_defaults[$myavatar2] = 'wpengineer.com';

return $avatar_defaults;
}
add_filter( 'avatar_defaults', 'fb_addgravatar' );
}

Is the theme active, you will have the 2 new Avatars available in your list.

Twitter is all the rage these days and it does not look like it will go anywhere anytime soon. However, it often surprises me that a lot of WordPress blog owners do not offer a convenient way for readers to retweet their content. Anyone can get a WordPress plugin for Twitter Twitter their new content as it is published, but what about your old content?

Instead of passing all possible traffic, I noticed that provides a link from somewhere within the message (in an optimal way to the bottom of each post) is a good way to help readers and inbound traffic search engine to promote your content. When people are a lot of content you want to share it with others, so why not make it easier for them?

Not only the addition of a “Tweet This!” Forcing a great variety, but it is very easy to do. Chances are, if you do a Google search to find the code to use something like the following:

<a title="Click to send this page to Twitter!" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Currently reading <?php the_permalink(); ?>" target="_blank">Tweet This!</a>

This code works fine, but not the most optimal, in my opinion. According to the permalink structure your blog using WordPress, combined with the length of your domain name, which can be difficult to integrate the link into a tweet of 140 characters. Leaves no room for anyone to add their own comments to Twitter.

As a proposed solution, I recommend using WordPress code as follows:

<a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=RT @fmys_dot_com<?php the_title ();?> <?php echo get_settings('home'); ?>/?p=<?php the_ID(); ?>">Tweet This</a>

This code will automatically insert the “RT” and the name of his Twitter account (the example above uses our Twitter account, @ fmys_dot_com) and then use the entry form its position in the tweet. When users click the link in the tweet, then you will be redirected to the actual position of the selected blog permalink structure, making a comfortable URL usually of short duration.

It has integrated Twitter into your WordPress blog? Share your strategies in the comments!

For most of us, traffic is the driving force behind our motivation to blogs and blogging. Therefore, it may seem absurd to think that you want to prevent a lot of traffic potential of Google Image Search.

However, some bloggers want to send personal photos, or adjusted to make the images and do not want anyone else to take them as far as possible.

If you fall into this category, you can easily prevent Google from indexing the images by entering the following code in your blog header file above the tags:

<meta name="robots" content="noimageindex">

If your site has a problem with people taking your content (images included), there’s a chance Google will always be the index where the individual website of the index. Another route you can do is place images in a folder and add a Disallow in your robots.txt file. For WordPress users, it is quite easy as the standard, we have images in our directory or pictures of our theme, or uploads a file (unless you set a custom path to your images). You can add something like the following to your robots.txt file:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /images/

or

User-agent: *
Disallow: /uploads/

It takes a lot of effort producing workable and good looking themes for all of you. In return, all I expect is a comment from each one of you who plans to use this theme. Even if you don’t use this theme, any feedback (negative or positive) will matter a lot for me So keep them coming.

Also called the initial letters, initial caps are enlarged character used as the first letter of a paragraph. Initial caps may be in a font, different color different, or you can even use pictures instead! In this tutorial we will learn to create original caps using special HTML markup, CSS, and so we will automate the process with a PHP function.

CSS

span.initialcap{
    float: left;

    font-size: 40px;
    line-height: 35px; /* Double the line height minus 1 pixel */

    font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;
    color: #2583ad; /* Blue */
    padding-right: 5px;
}

We intend to use serif fonts, make blue, and add a little ‘to the right intervals.

For the style of the first letter of a paragraph differently, we need the package in a special HTML element that we can later style by adding a few lines of CSS. For this tutorial, I’ll use a simple span element with “initialcap” class. The resulting point will look like this:

function fmys_cap($content){

    // Regular Expression, matches a single letter
    // * even if it's inside a link tag.
    $searchfor = '/>(<a [^>]+>)?([^<s])/';

    // The string we're replacing the letter for

    $replacewith = '>$1<span class="capital">$2</span>';

    // Replace it, but just once (for the very first letter of the post)
    $content = preg_replace($searchfor, $replacewith, $content, 1);

    // Return the result
    return $content;
}

// Add this function to the WordPress hook
add_filter('the_content', 'fmys_cap');

Ok, so you have added the necessary CSS to style.css file, but is a bit ‘annoying having to always write the HTML code to add a new post? Well, this is a bit ‘PHP will do it for you:

Essentially, our function takes the contents of the blog, and wraps to the first letter of our special tag.

Simply insert it in the functions.php file of your theme.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Remember to post your thoughts and questions in the comments section.

Have you noticed that many blogs are the tag clouds on their sidebars? However, it is a multi-tag cloud page. Because the tag cloud page, you may ask! Well … for many reasons: de-cluttering your sidebar, adding interactivity to your blog Or maybe you have so many tags that do not fit in a standard tag cloud widget.

So that’s what this tutorial is about: creating a tag cloud page.

Before you begin, you must be running WordPress version 2.3 or later and, of course, a lot of post codes, otherwise you may end up with a tag cloud white.

Creating a page template

First, we must create a custom page template. North Side is nothing but the PHP file to a specific comment on the code at the beginning of the file.

Go to create a new PHP file and name it “tagcloud.php” or whatever you want. Now, insert the following code:

<?php
/*
Template Name: Tag Cloud
*/
?>

<?php get_header(); ?>

    <div id="content" class="narrowcolumn">

        <div class="tag_cloud">
            <?php wp_tag_cloud('number=0'); ?>
        </div>

    </div>

<?php get_sidebar(); ?>

<?php get_footer(); ?>

Please note that we have become “number = 0″ parameter, it is because, by default, wp_tag_cloud () template tag to print only 45 commonly-used tags, and we want to show them all, however.

We also set the template tag in a div with a class of “tag_cloud” in case we need on the style with some CSS.

We are done with the PHP part, now save the file and upload it to your theme folder (wp-content/themes/your_theme_name).

A new page in WordPress

We need to do now is to create a page in WordPress. To do this, all you need is:

1.Go and write > page of the admin panel.

2.Type descriptive title of the page title field.

3.Locate Page Template panel, open it if closed, and select “Tag Cloud” from the dropdown menu.

4.Hit the Publish button.

And we finish. Feel free to post your thoughts and questions in the comments section.

Facebook send button allows your users to share your blog posts with their friends that are on Facebook as well those who are not on Facebook. They can also use the send button to send the message to Facebook Groups that they are part of.

In this article, we will show you how to add the Facebook Send Button in your WordPress blog.

Just Open your single.php copy and paste the following code inside your loop (In some themes, you will need to locate loop.php file to do this).

<div id="fb-root"></div>
<script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:send href="<?php echo get_permalink(); ?>" font=""></fb:send>

But the problem with above code is that it is not the best method. Facebook Send Button can only work well when it is in combination with the like button because without it, it has no social effect. So let us show you how to combine the like button and Send button in one like we have it in this post above.

<div id="fb-root"></div>
<script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:like href="<?php echo get_permalink(); ?>" show_faces="true" width="450" send="true"></fb:like>

This button will be very useful and it is totally new.

If you like this post, please consider sharing it!
