Written by our sometimes contributer Mallory Thompson

Thousands of protesters marched from Dupont Circle to the Ritz Carlton in West End today to attempt “citizen’s arrests” of insurance executives. The hotel is the site of the industry’s annual policy conference.

“We are here to make a citizen’s arrest! Congress you have listened to them long enough. It’s time to listen to us,” said William McNary, the head of the liberal US Action Group.

Of course, police are detaining protesters before they ever got near insurance executives. ABC News reports one of the first “symbolic detentions” was Anna Burger, head of the “Change to Win” labor coalition and SEIU’s Secretary-Treasurer. In total, MPD says there were 10 “symbolic detentions” at the Ritz.

Protesters are tired of rising premiums, denials of claims and the insurance industry efforts to kill or block reform and say it’s time to hold them accountable.

The “Citizen’s Posse” protest began with a speech in Dupont Circle by former DNC chairman Howard Dean.

The giant crowd is now disbanding, but the group also has events planned for the rest of the week in Washington DC and across the country.

The first male couple to be married in DC had a brief ceremony outside the DC Courthouse this morning just before 9 AM. Robb Hawthorne and James Betz, both Foggy Bottom residents and members of the GW community, tied the knot surrounded by friends, family, and supporters. (Edit: another ceremony for Jeremy Moon and Brian Legaspi occurred inside the courthouse simultaneously.)

While residents could apply last week, today was the first day same-sex couples could officially marry in DC.

The couple got to the courthouse not long after 3:30am this morning, and others began to gather soon after. Friends and supporters brought Krispy Kreme treats for anyone to enjoy, and others brought signs congratulating all those who were getting married today. Fortunately, hate-filled protesters didn’t arrive until later in the morning after the first ceremony — and since there were only two of them, they were easily ignored and pushed to the side by the many, many supporters there to celebrate equality, marriage, and love.

While being interviewed by the massive collection of reporters, the newly-weds were asked why it was so important to them to be the first to get married. James said that while they were happy and proud to be part of such an historic day, the most important aspect of today was simply that they were finally married — for them, today was about confirming and celebrating their love and commitment to one another.

We wish all the best to all of today’s newly-weds, and we’re especially proud of Robb and James for tying the knot and starting their married life right here in Foggy Bottom! CONGRATS!

(Full Disclosure: Robb and James are personal friends of mine, and I’m so happy for them!)

At 6 pm, you can head to the Newman Catholic Center on campus for a homecooked meal and a discussion of Pope John Paul II’s cadre of writings bundled as “The Genius of Women” as part of Women’s History Month.

GWU: Rooftop’s National College Comedy Competition comes to GW’s Betts Theatre (Marvin Center).
Wednesday

Out of FoBo: Help raise money for Justice for DC Youth at the AED Globe Theater (1927 Florida Avenue NW). The event, which runs from 6 to 9 pm, will feature New York Times best selling author Iyanla Vanzant, and is hosted by Columbia University’s Dr. Marc Lamont Hill. Ayanna Gregory will also be a musical guest. Space is limited, so purchase tickets in advance. [Ticketing]

If you’re planning some shopping, stop by Betsey Johnson in Georgetown from 11 am to 8 pm to celebrate the release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. There will be tea party themed refreshments, and 15% off all evening dresses all weekend. Or pop into the Georgetown mall for some champagne to celebrate the opening of Simply Soles from 1 pm to 5 pm.
