Group matches will be played in the league format and all matches from the quarterfinals onwards will be knockouts under floodlights. Each corporate can field a maximum of two teams.

The tournament also features an award for 'Most Disciplined Team', in an effort to promote sporting spirit amongst the participants.

Commenting on the initiative, Rajalingam, Director, Toss Sports Management said, “The main aim of the event is to promote the game among the wider public audience and also to promote a healthy lifestyle among the corporate employees. To achieve this, the company will be organizing several events in the upcoming months.”

Toss Sports Management organises Chennai Corporate Spikes

Toss Sports Management will be organising Chennai Corporate Spikes, an inter-corporate volleyball championship for men at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Egmore, Chennai on Feb. 18 and 19. This is the first edition of the property, which will now be an annual tournament.

Commenting on the initiative, Rajalingam. M., Director, Toss Sports Management said: "Being a sports management company, it is obvious that we look forward to expanding ourselves more than providing marketing and branding solutions and executing events. The objective behind organising this event is to develop a sports property in Chennai which can get some recreation amongst the corporates. Engaging corporates would help us get sponsors who associate with the property from the grassroots level and would grow with the property."

This is a two-day tournament which will engage 16 teams. The event is being promoted through social media, PR and promotions at coffee outlets. Toss Sports Management claims that it aims to expand in future, engaging schools, colleges and clubs. The sponsors will be declared on Feb. 1 and will get an opportunity to interact with brands which will benefit their company. An integrated marketing plan will be developed to promote their company, apart from receiving on-ground visibility.

Rajalingam further added: "Normally, tournaments go on for five to six weeks at a stretch, but we have made this a two-day tournament as the corporates can enjoy the weekend and go back to work, instead of waiting for another five days."

Sports Management Is Going In The Right Direction: Rajalingam

Meet Rajalingam, the founder director of Toss, a Chennai-based Sports management company. The company was launched on the occasion of the National Sports Day on August 29, 2011. In an interview with Radika Jagadeep, Rajalingam talks about his company and plans. Excerpts:

Congratulations for your sports management venture.
Raj: Thank you.

Tell us about your sports management company?
Raj: Toss is a sports management company with an aim to provide full fledged 360 degree solutions to its clients. We focus on creating sport properties which will act as branding platforms for sponsors.

What’s the working model of this company?
Raj: We have developed a "4P" model which we will be implementing in our sports management practice.
The 4P's are: Participation: To increase sports participation, Promotion: To promote sports among the public, Platform: To provide platform for budding and professional players, Professionalism: To bring in professionalism in the sports management.

What are your plans for 2010 & 2011?
Raj: We will be organizing few corporate sports events in this year. We are also working on representing a player, but the details will be formally out in a short time.

Your thoughts on how sports management is headed in India?
Raj: Well, it’s going in the right direction. IPL has taken our country to great heights in the International sports marketing industry. It’s a nice model where it’s a win-win for al the stakeholders of the game (federation, corporate sponsors, media houses, players, team franchisees and of course audience). And also other sports are catching up with the trend.

What’s your view on organizations like IMG, NBA and few European clubs’ entry in India?
Raj: It’s actually a good sign with the entry of international organizations starting their operations in India. Also I personally think that the IMG-Reliance’s deal with both AIFF and BFI will help in growing football and basketball in the country in the long run.

Who’s the inspiration for you to get into sports management?
Raj: The choice of sports management happened accidentally. The idea of making my passion as my profession interested me. And coming back to your question, my role models are Mark McCormack, the founder of IMG and the pioneer of sports marketing concept and Ravi Krishnan, sports marketing expert and an ex-IMG head honcho.

What according to you should be done to improve the level of other sports in India?
Raj: The game should be promoted at the grassroots level. More kids should be made to take up the game. The games should be made television friendly and audience friendly, especially the match schedules. It’s a long term process. Marketing the game to the public will bring in more audience which in turn will bring in more sponsors and advertisers.

On the occasion of the National Sports Day on August 29, 2011, a new sports management company named "toss" was formed in Chennai. Toss is a full service 360 degrees sports management company specializing in providing all forms of sports management solutions.

I personally believe that if these ideas are implemented, both the sports and the sportspersons can be promoted and developed in India."
