FoneArena’s Varun got a chance to interview him where we ask Julien about Symbian – the most widely used smart phone platform in the world.

Here is the text of the interview

Varun: I have been a long time user of Symbian phones. But don’t see much changes on the UI front . This is a reason many people bash Symbian for , more so due to the rise of iPhone and Android. Are you guys working on improving the UI with Symbian ^2 and future versions?

Julien: Symbian^2 UI is mostly based on S60. There are small changes but nothing major. S^2 is an intermediate version that has already been feature completed. We are using it to validate our release process and contribution model. S^3 will start bringing UI and especialy UX improvement, it is a step towards the full makeover that S^4 will be.From kinetic scrolling to single tap (contribution from Ixonos) as well as more gesture support. Qt is also gonna bring a lot more flexibility and we’re definitely looking at more ‘eye candy’ while keeping performances and developers priorities in mind.

Varun: Development on Symbian has always been always seen as an area of infinite possibilities. But also a pain point for developers as there is a huge of learning curve and lot of confusion on how to go about developing an application.Need your comments ?

Julien: As you mentionned, Symbian allows developer to dig really deep in the platform and achieve innovation. Open sourcing the platform will allow even more visibility for 3rd party developers. There is an ongoing effort to enable cross platform development, and many initiatives to allow developer to progress faster towards ready applications. On top of that, runtimes such as WRT (Web Run Time, based on Webkit) or Adobe Flash, offer new possibilities, and increase web data productization speed. A developer can now spend few hours designing a WRT app, defining the UI and basic functionality, release that to the market and get feedback from the community. Do that with 10 apps, spend some time incorporating the feedback and go C++ with the ones that need it, and that bring the best return on investment.

Varun: Maemo and Symbian will mutually survive it seems . How do you draw inspiration from Maemo and what impact would it have on Symbian ?

Julien: Maemo is one of the 6 operating system supported by Nokia, I would recommend connecting with them to get the best views on it. When it comes to the community, I let you guys form your own opinion.

Varun: What are the biggest markets for Symbian globally ?

Julien: With globalization, it is difficult to know exactly where all the 250 Millions Symbian Devices are. India and Europe are definitely amongst the biggest, but other markets are growing and some are opening. The foundation had signed an agreement with CMCC (China Mobile), opening new possibilities

Varun: What is your take on the iPhone OS and how do you see it as a competing platform ?

Julien: From a personal standpoint, I do believe that iPhone OS has been an enabler for the mobile world such as we know it today. Keeping in mind that the pace is picking up exponentialy in the computer world, it is easy to expect the same from mobile computers. Achieing a perfect operating system is near to impossible, but I do believe that it can only be reached with open and transparent communications. Closed operating systems on mobile will definitely meet more challenges in a future of high bandwith and unlimited communication between individuals.

Varun: Don’t you think S60v5 is not a perfect OS considering it evolved from non-touch devices ?

Julien: S60v5, or Symbian^1, is a first step towards touch. It is not perfect, and never was meant to be.It is a transition from non touch interface to touch interface with all that it takes.Nokia needed to learn, and also had to keep consistency with its previous UIs in order to retain customers. The percentage of customers buying Nokia because they know how it works is higher than the one of users who need radical new User Experience.

Varun: Is Symbian willing to listen to consumers / key influencers ?

Julien: Symbian is an open platform. As of now, anyone can contribute on http://ideas.symbian.org and the forum Because of the evolution towards full open source, some packages are still containing protected code. For a 1500USD membership fee (covering legals and registration), companies can join the foundation and access the full source code. They also get other services. Ultimately, we want the community (Device Creators, Operators, Developers and End Users) to define their platform, the way they want it.

Varun: What is the biggest challenge for the Symbian platform ?

Julien: I guess the biggest challenge is the same as for other platforms, providing a compeling offer for all its key stakeholders (listed earlier). Good thing is that being the only open platform with an open governance model, we welcome our stakeholders contributions in defining their own platforms.

Varun: What is the biggest strength for Symbian ?

Julien: The biggest strenght of the OS itself is certainly its proven reliability over time. There are plenty of other strengths such as being compliant with latest industry standard, high level of customization, hardware efficiency (battery life, memory), openess.

Varun: What phone do you currently use and what phone are you looking forward to buy in future?

Julien: As of now I am using an N97. Regarding future device , probably the first S^3 device, as I’d want to make sure that it’s good enough for the market and provide feedback asap to the community.

Varun: Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Good luck with future versions of Symbian!

Julien: Thank you for the interview, and if you, readers, want to know more about the Symbian Foundation and the Symbian OS, feel free to follow me on twitter and ask me questions

Already having experienced the Awesomeness that was the Nokia E71, i was very eager to get my Hands its Successor. Filled in the Trial Form, sent it back to WOM World and here we go, the Adventure that is the E72 begins:

I received the Box on late Friday afternoon and went to work with it on Saturday Morning. After i first took the Device in my Hands i’ve decided to come up with a few Words to the Person who trialed the E72 before me: You’re in a very elite Group, Pal. You have the Privilege to get your Hands on one of Nokia’s latest Devices. The Handset came in a Condition that some of my 2 year old Phones not even look like. The Screen is scratched, some Corners look like they’re losing small Chips of Chrome the hard way. So in my Opinion the Device has been dropped and not at all been taken care of. If you don’t know how to treat a Test Device, you better leave them to People who do. Seriously, you don’t deserve it. Not cool.

Anyways, back to the E72: Out of the Box, the E72 met my Expectations, in being a very premium Device. Lots of chromed Parts and stylish black mix up to a good Experience, feeling immediately well in the Hand. With a Size of 114 x 58.3 x 10.1 mm and approx. 128g of Weight, the Handset offers a great Size for this Formfactor. Let’s have a closer Look at the Front of the E72, shall we? Starting on Top we have the Loudspeaker for Calls, which offers a very good Call Quality. Right next to it is the VGA Front Camera for Video Calls and the Light Sensor. The Display is the well known 2,36″ QVGA Screen (320×240 Pixels) in landscape Format. I just can’t leave this without pointing the Finger at the ridiculous Resolution. Wouldn’t it be time already to upgrade to something a bit more crisper? How about 480×320 AMOLED? It’s 2010, you know?

The whole D-Pad Area is made off stainless Steel, which looks fantastic and furthermore continues the Line of High Quality Material, just like i’m used to on E-Series! The Navi Key is all black now and is a small something that makes me acknowledge the E72 to his older brother, the E71. A new Feature on the Navi Key? Optical Usage Baby! Yes thats right, the E72 is sporting an optical Navi Key, enabling you to scroll around with just slight touching it, instead of using it “old school”, with pressing. While this sounds like a cool Feature on Paper, i found myself switching this Feature off roughly 2 Days after using it. The Thing about this Feature is this: When I was actually concentrating on using the Device, i worked the optical Way and it worked okay. But, when i did something i was doing regularly, i always used the Navi Key the normal Way. F.e. when i received a Text Message, i grabbed the E72, unlocked and immediately pressed my Way down to the Standby Notification. This is coming from itself, as I’m very used to this kind of Actions. Both Ways work fine, but they do not work at the same Time, meaning that i had a lot of accidental Presses. A very cool Thing again is, that the Navi Key has a pulsating Light Ring in it for Standby Mode and/or Notifications, so you basically always know what’s going on, without unlocking the Screen. Very nice Feature, but one Thing I’d like to see, is different Colours for different Events, with of Course the Freedom to configure it in whichever Way i want.

On each Side of the Navi Key, we have the E-series typical “One-Touch-Keys”. Calendar, Contacts and Messaging-Buttons all open the corresponding Application, or if you wish, can be customized, to open whatever you want. In my Case, i had the Messaging Button set to open the Messaging App on short Press and Profimail, the World’s best Mail Client for Symbian, on long Press. This comes in really handy, and i really miss this on N-Series as well. The Selection and Call/End Keys are all implemented in a Piece of stainless Steel, which is nothing short but awesome.

If we look a bit down, the biggest Recognition Point of the Nokia E72 – it’s full QWERTY keypad. and my god is thing Thing awesome! Definitely suited for People with smaller Thumbs, this Keyboard can be either your best Friend or your worst Enemy, for me it’s the first One. Me and this Keyboard have become very good Friends of the Course of those 2 Weeks, really good Ones. I can’t really spare my Girlfriends “This thing is soooo ugly”-point of view, because i think it’s just georgeous and well made. Similar to the E71, this Keyboard has 4 Rows, the Keys are very tactile and have a rounded Surface, so you always feel the Difference between one key to another. A new torch light option has been laid onto the Space key, so if you do a long press on that one, the Camera LED will guide you through the Night. Speaking of the Space Key, this one has been made clearly smaller than on the E71, but therefore we have some more usefull Keys. I normally would judge this as a bad Thing – not in the Case of the E72, as Nokia has implemented important Keys like a separated Symbol Key (which also can be used to fire up your Bluetooth) or, and this is very cool, a separated button for the Exclamation Mark (!) has been added. I’m normally a critical Person, but in the E72 Case, i can’t praise it high enough. If you are looking for a Candybar Phone, the E72 should be yours!

Check back again this Week for Part 2 of my Review, when I’ll tell you more about the E72 – Camera, Battery Life and Software will be the Topics then!

Finally there is a way to do so with a click of a widget . The widget used to send DTMF request is called the USSD Widget. It is developed by Guseynov Alexey , Martin Grimme.

The widget has two ways of sending the DTMF requests one is by typing the DTMF in codes in USSD dial Pad.

And the other one is USSD Widget

So its now possible to see the DTMF response in the homescreen. This widget support automatic widget checking and many other customizations like font color, widget background colour etc..

The USSD widget need runtime components like

python-hildondesktop

hildon-desktop-python-loader

pexpect

ussd-common

And the USSD components like

Ussd-pad

Ussd Widget

You can Download the package with all components here.

Then transfer the contents of zip file to root of N900 i.e N900/

Then goto X-Terminal and Type

sudo gainroot

then

type
cd MyDocs

place all the contents of downloaded zip file to root of N900 i.e N900/

then type

dpkg -i filename.deb

example:

dpkg -i python-hildon.deb

likewise install

python-hildondesktop
hildon-desktop-python-loader
pexpect
ussd-pad
ussd-common

UPDATE:

To enable root in Nokia N900. Goto App Manager in N900 and find the app called rootsh in utilities or download it from here and transfer and install. Then you can type sudo gainroot. It works fine. Sometimes it asks for password. When it does just exit the X-Terminal and type sudo root.

“Our dream to build AURA has come true -- three years of development has resulted in a product that completely differs from others on the market.” said Michal Stencl, CEO of Sygic. “We are happy to announce it now and here, in the world that asks: “What is the future of LBS?”. We simply trust it is AURA -- one tool that combines navigation for pedestrians and drivers and lets users learn all about cities: where to go, where to stay and where to meet there. AURA keeps you on track whether your journey is by car or on foot, with the information you need at-hand, always available, without a mobile connection. Drive, walk and meet -- AURA presents one incredible, beautiful package.”

“We are proud to provide an expert answer to people who are asking why they should buy a new smart phone. The answer is simple, ‘AURA!’” stated Martin Kalis, Sygic marketing manager.

AURA is designed smartphones and personal navigation devices like the iPhone, Google Android, Windows Phone 7etc.

Watch AURA in action below

The app is coming soon to the Apple App store . And looks like AURA will be available for India too but its not clear if we will get the full 3D features . More info on the official page

Mobile video sharing service Qik has added a new Premium App to their service . The new Qik Premium app is exclusively available on the Nokia Ovi Store at a promotional price of 4.99 USD or 4.99 EUR depending on your location.

One of the main highlights of this app is the ability to save your uploaded videos in MPEG-4 format

They render the same game scenes on both the phones and test the frame rate and graphics. As you can see in the image below, the 3GS is doing 60 frames per second and the Nexus One is doing 31 frames per second.

One of the main reasons for the lower frame rate on the nexus one might be the larger screen size. The GPU needs to fill 2.5 times as many pixels on the Nexus One than it does on the iPhone.

In this test the 3D engine code running on both devices is the identical with one major exception – the Nexus isn’t using Neon floating-point optimization

Even though the iPhone 3GS packs only a 600Mhz CPU compared to the Nexus One which packs a 1 GHz CPU, the iPhone wins in the 3D arena. The Nexus One is powered by Android which is not yet fully optimized for gaming and 3D applications like the iPhone according to this test.

The 30 second promo quickly shows all the features of the iPad. We love the iPad’s screen but what’s scary is the onscreen keyboard. The guy did not even type a word during this ad. Does that mean Apple is not confident of the keyboard on the iPad ? We have always wondered how easy it is to type on the iPad considering its pretty big to grip and type at the same time
