Last year Cheesy Garlic Bread was the winner of Lay’s “Do Us a Flavor” US contest, while syrup-soaked Maple Moose won in Canada (naturally). Now, Lay’s is once again calling upon America to submit their own fan-made flavors for the chance to win $1 million dollars and see their creation hit shelves.

This year, Lays ups the ante by letting contestants suggest flavors for three different potato chip varieties including Original, Kettle Cooked and Wavy. Four finalists, as opposed to last year’s three, will be chosen to compete for first place, and fans can participate now through April 5, 2014. So far, the submissions have included everything from Sushi-flavored chips to (uh, yes please) Corned Beef Hash.

Peek some of the best and worst of the lot below.

Aimed at the discerning rabbit devotee, Japanese rabbit cafes offer their customers the opportunity to play with actual rabbits. While some cafes keep them in cages and allow patrons to cuddle up after finishing their meals, other’s will let you snuggle up to a furry friend while you sip on your latte. There are even establishments that let patrons adopt these cute creatures.

Take for example, Ra.a.g.f (meaning “rabbit and grow fat”) — a café that opened up in the fashionable Jiyugaoka area in 2012, with a breeding center attached to it where customers can buy their own bunnies for pets. Just think, you go into a café for a coffee and come out with a pet bunny.

The popularity of these pet cafés in Japan is attributed to many people being unable to have pets in their urban homes and the fact that pets provide relaxing companionship in what may otherwise be a stressful and lonesome urban life.

After receiving customer complaints on how their previous menu had “too many choices and too much text,” IHOP completely redesigned the menu’s look. The revamped spread resulted in a 3.6 percent increase in store sales, according to Bloomberg, and throws out the daunting wall of text for a more visual look.

The video below breaks down exactly how the restaurant chain’s redesign appeals to the visual cues of diners, from the addition of color-coded categories to an increase in vibrant photos. The visual-friendly layout makes it easier for patrons to navigate through their options, thus creating more opportunities for them to order more food. In other words, IHOP just created the menu version of a Charles Dickens picture book.

Typically, Kosher offerings are reserved for Jewish inmates with pertinent religious beliefs. However, some state prison systems have seen an unusual surge in Kosher meal requests ever since their introduction, leading to budgetary concerns. This is particularly true in Florida.

Why? Well, it costs about $7 per day for three Kosher meals in the Florida prison system, while standard prison food is $1.54 per day. California’s Kosher options also have a hefty price tag of $8 per three servings, while New York’s offerings weigh in at $5. The large price gap in these dishes add up over time, and there’s no standard way to decipher which inmates sincerely need Kosher food for religious reasons. That’s where prison officials try to decipher needs versus desires, which is certainly a gray area.

Florida is one of only 15 states that doesn’t serve Kosher food throughout its jail system. Although, the state is currently under court order, due to inmates’ religious freedom, to temporarily do so by July until the issue is resolved in trial.

Apparently, snorting and smoking smarties is the latest epidemic to plague schools in America. And yes, that’s smarties, as in those age-old mini multi-colored candies wrapped in plastic.

According to CBS News, a Portsmouth middle school in Rhode Island sent out an email to parents informing them that kids are crushing up the hard candy and either snorting the fine powder through a rolled up paper, or exhaling the dust through their mouths or nose like smoke.

While doctors say the finely chopped candy may give children a sugar rush, they assure parents that it won’t get anyone “high.” The email continued to provide a detailed list of the health risks associated with this trend, including infection, scarring of the nasal cavity and maggot infestation in the nose. The potential of crushed Smarties as a gateway drug to other substances like cigarettes were also brought up as a possibility. Although, we’re still stuck on the idea of maggots feeding off sugar embedded in your nose to take this issue seriously.

Alright, McDonald’s US, you’re doing something wrong. At least, that’s the case when McDonald’s Singapore is decking out their menu with Litchi Coco Frappes and Clementine Orange Mousse Cake. Yes, Clementine. Mousse. Cake. Who even knew those words were possible on a fast food menu?

The new Litchi Coco Frappe is the latest addition to their McCafé line-up and brings together the flavors of lychee with ice-blended chocolate. As one of our favorite fruits, we’re incredibly disappointed that we’re not sitting pretty in Singapore right now. For a limited-time, the Clementine Orange Mousse Cake will also be available. The sweet treat layers orange mousse embedded with orange slices and orange-flavored cake. Probably just the thing you were craving to nibble on with your lychee-flavored icee. Probably.

You’ve seen them, the pop culture-inspired popsicles typically found on ice cream trucks that don’t actually look anything like the characters they’re meant to resemble. You know, the ones with the gum ball eyes staring in two different directions and the bodies made up of melted, mutated goop.

Well, these minimalistic superhero pops designed by Netherlands-based graphic designer Chungkong are nothing like that. Sleek and instantly recognizable, they’re actually a follow-up to Chungkong’s other “pop” superhero series which re-imagined characters like Batman, The Hulk, Rorschach, and Wolverine as soda bottles.

Check out a few of our favorites below (the Captain America one is particularly ingenious), and then dream wistfully of the day such treats can become a reality. Ah, the joy of comic books.

Because we had the exciting opportunity to work with The Agenda Show during its couple-day tenure in Southern California, we also had the chance to thumb through racks and racks of apparel and accessories launching throughout 2014. We entered the show optimistically thinking that since food has evolved to become a larger part of the cultural zeitgeist, perhaps, just perhaps, we might find enough food-related clothing to put a writeup together. And that’s when we became a bit overwhelmed with the seemingly insurmountable number of pieces, and even COLLECTIONS from streetwear brands like Beloved, Neff and Sabre. The clothing seemed to shout, FOOD, YOU’RE HERE TO STAY!, and we’re excited to feed this trending fire.

Below, find a photo collection of our favorite pieces from the show itself and even a few brands that came from the extended Agenda network. If you’re in the street/surf apparel industry, make sure to catch Agenda NYC happening this week: January 22-23. And if we missed a brand you personally rep that features food in its new lineups, make sure to drop us a line through our contact form or social handles (@foodbeast).

FYI, these food items were spotted at an industry trade show and may or may not be available presently. To find out more information, make sure to follow up with the individual brands.

In preparation for the upcoming Lunar New Year, Burger King Singapore has rolled out a set of “golden” burgers that are almost too pretty to eat . . . considering they’re drenched in three different kinds of OOEY, GOOEY CHEESE.

Available for a limited time, the burgers come with either two beef or fried beef patties which are then smothered in nacho, Swiss, and American cheese and sandwiched beneath a sesame seed bun.

The ad campaign takes its cues from the movies, adorning titles like “Golden Cheese Award 2014″ and “Cheesiest BK Burger 2014″ with those iconic indie festival laurel leaves and awarding the burgers “5 stars.”

So uh, how do we get in on some of that decadence, hm?
