This year’s fest only passed by this weekend, but already festival director Stuart Galbraith is thinking ahead to the lineup for next year’s event.

He told the NME: “We’d have Foo Fighters and Muse because they’re cutting edge and I’d have AC/DC because they’re absolutely classic and I’ve wanted them to play here for the last five years.”

Speaking of this weekend’s festival, Galbraith said: “The weekend has been absolutely fantastic and ran extremely smoothly. There has been a significant reduction in numbers treated for serious medical reasons and there have been no major incidents reported.”

Some of the acts performing included Marilyn Manson, My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, Iron Maiden and Motley Crue.

Tickets for 2008 are set to go on sale for earlybirds this coming Friday. Those who buy early can secure passes at the same price as they paid for this year’s festival.

Billboard reports the group is about to hit the studio with producer Gil Norton, who was previously behind the boards for the band’s 1997 sophomore album “The Colour and the Shape.”

The set will be the follow-up to 2005’s double-disc “In Your Honor,” which has sold 1.3 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Overall, the Foos have shifted 7.6 million units since forming in 1995.

The group will play a handful of live dates this summer, including a June 23 opening slot for the Police at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium and July 7 at a location to be announced as part of Al Gore’s Live Earth benefit.

Shocked Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl started listening to obituaries of his own death for a second time, after internet pranksters struck again pronouncing the former Nirvana man dead.

Grohl had is entry on the popular encyclopedia website Wikipedia altered to read “David Eric Grohl (January 14 1969 - February 5 2007)”.

He said he only found out he was dead when friends started calling his home to offer his wife their condolences.

Grohl was quoted by StarPule: “I got a phone message from a friend saying ‘Er, I guess… Jordyn… this is maybe… for you. I’m so sorry to hear what happened.’ I heard this message and went, ‘What the f–k?’ They were leaving a message on my cell phone saying ‘I’m sorry Dave died.’ That was weird, but I guess I’ve finally graduated to that status of being an internet rumour. It weirded me out a bit, but it’s stupid. I’m like a cockroach, don’t worry, I’ll be around for a long time.”

Grohl was previously pronounced dead by pranksters back in May 2006.

The Foo Fighters were surprised as anyone when Prince lept into a cover of their hit track “Best Of You” during his halftime superbowl performance last weekend.

Prince himself had in the past denied the band the chance to release a cover of “Darling Nikki” as a b-side in the States.

“I heard that he didn’t like our version. Or maybe he just didn’t like us doing it,” Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins told MTV.

Either way, the band took it as a huge compliment that an artist of the calibre of Prince would cover their songs. Hawkins does wonder whether the Purple Rain star was sending the band another altogether different message.

“Dude, I have no idea why he did it, but I’d love to find out,” Hawkins said. “I mean, the thought went through my head that maybe he was doing it as a sort of ‘F— you’ to us, or maybe he really likes the song. Either way, it was pretty amazing to have a guy like Prince covering one of our songs — and actually doing it better than we did.”

He added that he was completely taken by surprise at a Super Bowl party. “I was watching the game at our producer Nick Raskulinecz’s house, and since he’s doing the new Rush album, all the guys from the band were there,” he told MTV. “I mean, I’m outside smoking a cigarette with [Rush drummer] Neil Peart and someone sticks their head outside and goes, ‘Uh, dude, Prince is doing your song.’ ”

Foos fans will be pleased to the learn the band have started working on their follow-up to In Your Honor, pulling together several demos. Hawkins joked: “maybe we’ll get cracking on a version of ‘Purple Rain’ to see if maybe he’ll hate it even more.”

Dave Grohl was also thrilled by the performance, telling Entertainment Weekly, ”Having been a massive Prince fan my whole life, I was flattered beyond words. What an honor to be covered by one of your heroes!”

The last time CBS aired the Super Bowl, the halftime show featured Janet Jackson, her exposed breast and some sunburst-shaped nipple jewelry that failed to become a fashion trend. Somehow, Prince got hired this year as an exemplar of wholesome family entertainment; presumably, network executives had only one request: “In the name of all that’s holy, don’t play ‘Darling Nikki.’ ” Prince obliged, although in his eleven minutes last night, he selected three other songs from the Purple Rain soundtrack, either because he wanted to remind people “Nikki” was on the same album or because he’s forgotten his entire back catalog from 1984 onward. (”Baby I’m a Star”? Really? Would any other Prince composition have been quite as random, with the possible exception of “Batdance”?)

The tiny genius did, however, do covers of “Proud Mary” (eh), a great bluesy snippet of “All Along the Watchtower” (release it as a single!) and three minutes’ worth of the Foo Fighters’ “Best of You” (huh?). Presumably, the last selection was payback for the Foos’ cover of “Darling Nikki” — as for the others, we can only conclude that Bob Dylan is on the verge of releasing a country-rock version of “Raspberry Beret” and that John Fogerty loaned Prince his bowling shoes last week.

Prince seemed determined to prove two points: (1) turquoise and tangerine don’t clash (2) he’s still one of America’s most underrated guitar heroes. He succeeded on both counts, though somebody else seemed to be playing the solo during the Foo Fighters cover. And if a dramatic white sheet concealed Prince just as it came time for the “Purple Rain” solo — well, chalk that up to the necessities of TV production and just be glad nobody got electrocuted performing in a Miami monsoon. It was still the best Super Bowl halftime show ever.

Dave Grohl “takes two” with Jack Black and Kyle Gass in MySpace’s latest Artist On Artist interview, going head to head with Tenacious D about what makes the perfect amount of Meatloaf and whether or not their ‘Pick Of Destiny’ flick really is the “greatest movie of all time”. The Ds return the love with straight-shooting questions about the Foo’s acoustic live album ‘Skin and Bones’, being on the road with Bob Dylan and their next album. Watch it here.
Ex-Niravana, current Foo and occasional comrade of Killing Joke, Tom Petty and Queens of The Stone Age, Dave Grohl takes on upbeat low-brow rockers Tenacious D in the latest in the MySpace Artist On Artist interview.

First up, Grohl gets down to business to determine whether or not ‘The Pick of Destiny’ (in cinemas here on January 11) really is the greatest film ever made, as the D’s claim.

“The weird thing is that it is!” says Black, who likens their promotion antics to the story of ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’.

“Everyone’s like ‘yeah, yeah we know the joke’… and we’re like NO!”

With the “perfect amount of Meatloaf” (Meatloaf stars in the film in his first on-screen rock performance since the classic ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’), The D swear it’s the real deal.

Grohl doesn’t get off light either, with TD wanting to know whether releasing a live album is cheating.

“No!” exclaims Grohl, who says they chose to release relatively rare acoustic live tracks so that fans wouldn’t be hearing the same rock tunes.

Grohl is also grilled on the Foo’s recent three week tour with Bob Dylan (”You didn’t have time with him at all - I bet he just disappeared,” teases Jack Black) and their new album in the pipeline…

But the long-time rock colleagues make nice at the end, with Gass giving a heartfelt thanks to Grohl for “playing on not one, but every single track the D’s ever recorded”, including tunes from their ‘Pick Of Destiny’ soundtrack.
