2011 -- A tiny retrospective

So this marks the last day of the year 2011 – and I'm glad that it's finally over.

2011 was a pretty eventful year in my personal life, seeing both my mother and my father in the hospital (one due to an accident, the other due to cancer – both are fine again, phew!), me having major troubles with both teeth and sinuses in the second half of the year, and let's not forget the pretty stressy work life as well (although that nevertheless was kinda fun, at least after the first three months of the year that very nearly broke me).

At least the year ended on a happy note: We finally found a new appartment1) and will move there march/april 2012, we spent five awesome days in the Southern Black Forest, playing in an epic ton of snow, we had a nice and quite christmas and will celebrate the new year with friends. Also, I rediscovered LEGO as a means for relaxing, built some sets already *happily hugs parents and friends again* and will continue to do so (I ordered that one and got myself a couple of LEGO Technic sets for being busy until it arrives)

So here's to an awesome 2012 (because it can get only better )

Recommendation: Frozen Synapse

I actually planned on doing a longer write up about another Indie gem I've been playing these days: Frozen Synapse. But since work is currently rather demanding and I don't seem to be able to write coherent sentences currently, I'll leave you with the trailer and the friendly hint that the game is currently on sale at Steam (50% off today).

The Adobe Flash Plugin is needed to display this content.

Love the visuals, the soundtrack (I actually bought the Soundtrack edition and have been listening to those awesome tracks during work) and the gameplay, so if you're up for a nice tactical, turn based (and even “play-by-email” compatible) awesome game, this is your chance!

Update: I currently mostly frequent server UK1, if that is of interest to you ;)

Remember my somewhat organically grown looking house1) from Terraria? I kinda remodelled…

I'm hooked. I really am.

The last couple of days I've been sitting at home1), doing little else but playing the everliving cr*p out of this little indiegame called "Terraria" that was released like 10 days ago on Steam.

The Adobe Flash Plugin is needed to display this content.

It's an exploration/survival/building kinda game, allowing you to explore a randomly generated world including different biomes such as forests, deserts, oceans and such, but also deep cave systems leading down to “hell”. Of course, you are not alone in this world and are constantly fending off different kinds of enemies inhabiting the biomes (Slimes, Zombies, Skeletons, …). If that sounds like Minecraft2) to your ears: Yes, there is a strong resemblance. However, Terraria adds a couple of real ingame goals in the form of bosses to defeat and in game events like Blood Moon, Goblin Invasions or falling meteorites. Besides that, I'm happy to have something like 2d Minecraft, as sadly the original triggers my motion sickness pretty hard.

So I already built a stone castle thingy:

As you can see, I've got a mushroom farm in my cellar, a little well/pool thingie and portcullis made from sand for my outer doors in case of the occasional Blood Moon (where Zombies can open doors and therefore invade my house and slaughter my NPCs).

Speaking of NPCs, I already got a couple of them to move in (a merchant, a nurse and a demolitionist and of course also the obnoxious guide3)) which provide me with different services (e.g. buying and selling items from the merchant).

Below the house is the entrace to a quite complex tunnel system where I go to explore and gather ores and such. I've just hit the -800 feet mark there and encountered my first spots of lava4). Sometimes, I also accidentally trigger waterfalls:

Additionally to my single player map, I'm also playing on a small multiplayer world together with a couple of friends. We just stole a couple of books from the Dungeon and died a horrible death when trying to defeat the first boss.

So, anyway, I can only give a full hearted recommendation for this game. It cost me 10€ and already provided me with more than a day of constant entertainment. If you happen to like sandbox environments and building your own stuff, give it a try

1)

2)
if you don't know what Minecraft is, you must have been living under a rock for the last year or not be interested in video games very much – anyway, read up on it here

3)

4)
and also created some obsidian which I sadly can't mine yet with my golden pickaxe

Puzzling Monkey Island

I'm always trying to find ways to distract me from work and to relax better during my free time. So when my mother recently announced that she'd found solving jigsaw puzzles to be very much relaxing for her, I decided to give it a try myself. It has been a while since I did this1) but I surely remember of it being a quite fun and mind capturing pastime, so why not, right?

Given that demod and me have a very small flat and therefore no place to store a partially solved jigsaw, I first got myself a case for solving and storing away jigsaw puzzles2), and then decided on something special for my first try:

I ordered a custom 1000 tiles puzzle of the “Secret of Monkey Island” cover, based on those poster-ready files I already blogged about some time ago. Printing and delivery took less time than expected3) and so I could get to work last weekend. Due to a very busy week and unexpected difficulties with the motive4), it took me until yesterday to finish it. But now: Tadaa!

Next up: Either a Sheepworld puzzle I got as a birthday present some time ago5), or some very cheesy but calming motive I found while shopping for the puzzle case6). And – of course – “LeChuck's Revenge” and “The Curse of Monkey Island” sometime in the future

It seems to work btw – I didn't think about work at all while working on the puzzle.

	lucasarts,

	puzzle,
	geek

1)
although my mom and me have a tradition of solving a christmas jigsaw puzzle together, we haven't come around to doing so for the last couple of years, something I really miss…

2)
I got the Portapuzzle by Jumbo for 1000 tiles

3)
ordered January 30th, delivered February 2nd

4)
see that skull? It's left side has the same color as nearly every bit of skin seen on the picture, and also the whole upper left area… especially Guybrush made me pull my hair sometimes

5)
I'm a bit scared of that one tbh, due to the many one-colored areas

6)
Fun fact: Said case won't fit into a Packstation. I should have known beforehand.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I'm spending these days relaxing with some good books and WoW1), trying to forget the horrible stressful last months and preparing for the possibly equally stressful ones ahead in 2011, so this here blog will still stay pretty quiet, sorry.

	christmas,

1)
yes, yes, I started again, now stop laughing

Making Windows ready for the Desktop: A follow-up

It's been quite some time now since my post on how to make Windows usable for coding1). I thought it might be time for a follow-up, especially since I have since redefined some of my workflow, discovered new tools, etc.

For my Linux-mouse-behaviour I now incorporate Taekwindow instead of KatMouse, which started to freak out in my browser after a recent Firefox update. On top of the “scroll the window beneath the cursor and not the one with the focus” functionality, Taekwindow also adds Alt-dragging and -resizing to Windows.

For a simple and functional screenshot tool I have fallen in love with Greenshot. It is highly configurable (hotkeys for taking a screenshot of a definable section, the current window or the whole screen, the naming scheme to use for new screenies) and also comes with a simple image editor. All in all, I wouldn't want to miss it anymore when testing and creating bugs An interesting Linux equivalent would btw be Shutter.

Also a regular in my toolbox is now Notepad++ as my text editor of choice – I'd actually kill for a Linux port of this one

And last but not least, I have also installed ManicTime as my automatic time tracker, since my company really loves itself some timesheets. ManicTime automatically logs all focused windows (as in, application, window title, usage time), and these logs have really helped in the past to refresh my memory when I had to fill out my timesheet after a very busy day. I'm probably going to buy the pro version once my timesheet becomes more complex again2).

I also got rid of some applications though. I don't use Console2 or PuttyCyg anymore, and I also dumped the Samurize Clock Client with my custom clock/load monitor widget after Samurize started to crash or throwing weird error messages at me.

What I sadly also had to dump is VirtuaWin (and its “let's check this out” temporary replacement Dexpot. While I really love virtual desktops, and really really missed them when stating to use Windows again, I soon had to discover that Windows itself simply isn't ready for them yet. A couple of applications don't play well with being moved around from desktop to desktop3), and without some equivalent of DevilsPie4) virtual desktops are only half the fun anway.

1)
at least for someone like me used to coding in a Linux environment, YMMV

2)
damn you, consulting assignment *shakes her fist angrily*

3)
I'm looking at you, Outlook! And at you too, Microsoft Communicator!

4)
Dexpot has a window matching utility built in, but that didn't seem to be totally bugfree yet

Mini-Review: Kindle 3

As some of you might already know, I recently got myself a freshly released Kindle 3. I've been interested in acquiring an e-ink based ebook reader for quite some time now, so it was an easily made decision when Amazon announced the nicely priced K3 WiFi at the end of July and I quickly preordered one – in graphite of course . I also got myself the official leather cover in black. Both were shipped via UPS on August 26th and arrived at my door step on August 30th.

First impressions: I love that device! It's incredibly thin (8.5mm only), very leightweight (241g according to the stats) and doesn't feel cheap at all despite the competitive pricing. I also like how good it feels in my hand1). The display is everything I hoped it to be, a nice substitute for printed hard copies and very easy on the eyes. I read a lot on my Android smartphone over the last couple of months and their screens made my eyes tire very fast, especially in low light environments. Not so with the Kindle, I frequently forget that it's an electronic device at all. I'm also satisfied with the fast screen response both in menus and when changing pages. E-ink displays have a lower refresh rate than LCDs due to how they work but are getting faster thanks to technical advances – I had the opportunity to take a look at a Kindle 2 a couple of months back, and the refresh rate of the K3 is way better than that of the K2.

The (thumb-)keyboard on the K3 is sufficient – it doesn't have a dedicated number row2) but the keys feel nice and typing (e.g. for adding annotations to the book you are reading) is on the ok side of things. The Kindle is charged via micro USB (so the charging cable I always carry around for my Desire anyway fits) and when plugged into a PC acts as a USB mass storage device, so no custom drivers or other kind of software is needed to upload documents. Additionally, Amazon provides you with a @kindle.com email address for sending documents directly to the Kindle which can then retrieved via Whispernet – careful with this though, as the they charge you per MB if you retrieve the stuff via 3G on a 3G enabled Kindle.

Main menu of the Kindle with all documents. Documents can be sorted into user defined collections to categorize them.

On the software side of things the Kindle offers support for Amazon's own AZW format, Mobipocket's .MOBI and .PRC (as long as the file is DRM free), TXT and PDF. The common ebook format EPUB is not supported, however I had good experiences with conversion from EPUB to MOBI using the awesome and free Ebook Manager Calibre. PDFs are a difficult case on the Kindle – the 6” screen can cause a way too small font size for certain PDFs in portait orientation, and even switching to landscape can sometimes still result in too small a font size for some people.

I so far mostly use the Kindle for (DRM free) techbooks I got from O'Reilly and Manning and a handful of Kindle books. Speaking of Kindle books, that is really the only thing that so far seriously pisses me off about the whole Kindle thing. While in the US the ebooks are well priced, europeans have to pay something between 40 and 60% on top of the US price due to some stupid taxes and “wireless delivery costs”3) which quickly leads to the ebooks often costing more than the paperback version. That's IMHO not the right approach to getting people to buy ebooks.

The pricing policy for Kindle books in action. Hooray for living in europe.

But back to the software. The Kindle also packs a Webkit based (experimental) browser, which does a pretty good job rendering sites, but is a bit prone to crashes4). I am told that surfing outside of the US via 3G is limited to the Amazon store and Wikipedia though.

Dokuwiki.org on the webkit baser browser of the Kindle.

All in all I'm very happy with my Kindle – reading on it is fun and good on my eyes. It would be made even better though if Amazon rethought there european pricing policy, because that's a serious ripoff. Also, it would be great if the PDF support got reflowing added to it, that would enhance reading PDFs greatly I think5). Other than that, a big recommendation from my side. I'll finish this post with a link to some nice images of the Kindle screen under a USB microscope6) and some screenshots from the Kindle in action below.

Rendition of a typical ebook format (here Amazon's own azw). Text style and orientation can be changed, Text-to-Speech is supported.

Rendition of a PDF. Zoom can be changed, as can contrast (this one really helps with PDFs). Landscape mode is available as well (helps with PDFs that don't look good in portrait) and splits each page in three parts.

	review,
	kindle,
	ebooks

1)
Funnily enough it feels kinda like I always imagined those flat mobile console display thingies in Star Trek must feel like – welcome to the future

2)
The first row acts as a dedicated number row though with a pressed Alt-Key, so Q becomes 1, W 2 and so on.

3)
Given that I own a WiFi only Kindle that doesn't cause any roaming charges for Amazon when retrieving books and such via Whispernet here in Germany, that translates to greed on Amazon's part in my book – they could easily offer a discount on documents not sent via 3G but they chose not to.

4)
I experienced a couple of freezes on the Kindle so far and I suspect that the firmware has yet to shake of some bugs – keeping my fingers crossed for the updates to come. Nothing too bad though – it never happened during simple reading, and that is what the device is made for, right?

5)
I'm currently still experimenting with pdfcrop and similar tools to preprocess PDFs for my Kindle.

6)
I just got myself one of those as well, so expect funnily weird pictures in the upcoming weeks

Remember Alienswarm? I just read on RPS that its successor is coming out on monday. On Steam. For free. Bloody awesome! Turns out the creators of that awesome UT2k4 mod where bought up by Valve a while ago, took part in L4D and Portal2 development and now got to realize there Alienswarm successor. I'm so looking forward to monday now, demod and me will most certainly spend a lot of time on this, best co-op game ever.

Just a quick one: I still happen to have some flattr invites (see my recent blog post for an explanation of what flattr is). If anyone wants one, please leave a comment with a valid email below so I can send it to you. I will update this blogpost once all invites are gone.

That's all for now

Update 1: I just got a friendly heads-up that my comments were borked (thanks to a faulty update or rather my own stupidity ). This should now be solved, and there's still one invite left.

Update 2: All invites are gone now.

As some of you might know, I'm an avid user of the tumblelogging service soup.io. One thing that's been really bothering me for some time now though has been the non-existing support of anything remotely resembling the vi keys feature of Google Reader for jumping from post to post. In fact it bothered me so much that I simply sat down last night and created a user script that scratches that itch: "Soup.io vi keys". Feel free to install it into your browser as well

Update: I just uploaded an updated version of the script. Jumping now always works from the element currently scrolled to, regardless whether the element was reached by jumping or scrolling manually.

I'm flattrd

The DokuWiki Flattr Plugin provides a syntax for adding a flattr button to arbitrary wiki pages.

I recently (yesterday to be exact) got my hands on a flattr invite. Flattr is a new social micropayment plattform that allows participants to spread a small monthly sum of money between all flattr-enabled content online that they liked (by clicking on the attached flattr button). You might want to take a look at the following video for a way more comprehensive explanation. Let me just say that I really like the concept so far and hope that it will catch on.

The Adobe Flash Plugin is needed to display this content.

Anyway, given that I use this here wiki to post all my self created content – be it texts or software – I thought it would be a good idea to create a DokuWiki flattr plugin to quickly flattr-enable said content. You can of course find this plugin at the usual place. And if you like it and are already on flattr please don't hesitate to click the button

	flattr,
	dokuwiki,
	plugin,
	selfcoded

Andi had the great idea to blog about the less well known gems in his RSS subscriptions. And since it's been some time I wrote something anyway and I am certainly happy about any input regarding blog posts to write, I thought I should do the same

The Big Picture by boston.com is my most favourite fotoblog. Each post contains a series of pictures related to one specific topic. Topics range from current events such as the recent volcano eruption and its consequences to more broader subjects such as “water” or “the world from above”. I made my way through most of the archives a couple of months ago, and there are simply stunning photographies to be discovered here!

In the J-List side blog by Peter Payne from J-List you can (mostly) find short posts about all things Japan, be it language particularities or social specialities. I have learnt a lot here.

The Moth is currently my favourite podcast, consisting of short stories from the several “The Moth” story telling events held at several major US cities. It's not every week that I'm blown away by the posted story, but there are a couple of real gems in there, so I keep listening.

The Best of Wikipedia tumblelog collects interesting articles from the english Wikipedia really worth reading. Sadly, the blog hasn't been updated in a while, but even the archives can be really fun to rummage through. Keeping my fingers crossed though that the author will start updating again!

Last but not least there's also a YouTube channel of Google Tech Talks which I follow for the one or other pretty interesting talk about various technical subjects from programming related stuff1) to LEGO to brain chemistry.

That's about all I can think of about to post here right now… if I happen to stumble across any other Gems, I'll certainly post a follow-up

	feed,
	recommendation,
	rss

1)
I especially enjoyed was Advanced Topics In Programming Languages: Closures For Java by Neil Gafter

“Dwarf Fortress” (or DF) is a quite complex fantasy roguelike/building game. In its most common game mode you play overseer over a fledgling fortress established by a small group of dwarves somewhere in a vast generated world (including a generated complex world history). You have to make sure to keep the dwarves alive, happy and well-fed, have to fend off whatever you encounter in the environment around your fortress (or below it…) and be careful not to dig too deep. All this in an ASCII-only interface (there are some graphical tilesets available though).

I've now tried my hand a couple of times at it but failed horribly. That didn't stop me from making my way reading through several playthroughs which in themselves are bloody hilarious and impressive and which I want to share with you (at least my personal favourites so far) in case you happen to have some free time on your hands:

Boatmurdered – the most famous of all DF LPs I think. Elephants of Doom!

Headshoots – with skeletal mountain goats!

Syrupleaf – arctic wastes, demonic spawn and sand raiders (yes, sand raiders… in arctic wastes)

What makes even reading through so bloody entertaining is the amount of weird stuff happening thanks to the complex game mechanics. Dwarfs throwing tantrums, falling in love with their spider-silk-coats, drama, loss, success, magma channels getting completely out of control, mocking undead, … the list seems to be endless, and I really wished I was able to get into the game itself instead of just reading the stories of other people playing it – but that's better than nothing I guess

Update: Nearly forgot the post over at “Rock, Paper, Shotgun” that introduced me to DF a couple of months back, "Roburky’s Dwarf Fortress Diary".

Hello Jenny!

This is Jenny.

Jenny just moved in with my parents on saturday. She's an 8 week old Golden Retriever puppy that got born on December 10th and her favourite pastime currently is sleeping… lots of sleeping.

She prefers the place in front of the porch door over anywhere else for her naps. Probably because that's where she can also keep an eye on us and make sure no one suddenly disappears.

When she's not dreaming of running and playing she spends her waking hours chewing on anything she can get her fangs on (most of which she is not supposed to gnaw on, but she's learning that), rummaging through the garden and playing with her two-legged mates.

She is very energetic and managed to keep me and my parents on our toes for the last days very well (and I'm still quite alert even though I'm now back at home with no dog in sight), but she's also a major cutie. I'm looking forward to the years to come

Kaddi tagged me with her New Year's meme “Fustilinus 09”, and who am I to ignore sticks hitting my head1)? So I set down to answer her questions, but before I present the results, a quick look at the rules of this game'o'tag:

Link to the website from which you got tagged.

The name of the meme (“Fustilinus”) must be included in your post.

List these rules.

Tag two or three of your favourite blogs.

Well, the first three rules I already got covered, and for the last one I'll tag ZiB, chi and my mom. And here are my answers:

Can you think of something that really sucked?

The ignorance of our government concerning censorship.

And what rocked?

Having found a job which I actually enjoy thoroughly, despite the stress. And meeting up with chi and Andi in February and November. AND my best friend getting married2). And of course my parent's decision to finally get themselves a dog

How about your health – all fine or on the down slope?

Fine I'd say. Some more colds than I normally catch, but all in all still better than earned

Did you get yourself vaccinated against the (new) flu?

Against the seasonal flu: Yes. Against the swine flu: no, never, over my dead body.

Did you make any big changes to yourself or around your place?

I started on my new job in January, and I got some new posters for our flat.

Are you happy about it?

Yep

Biggest acquisition of the year?

Probably my HTC Hero.

Newest electronic gadget?

The HTC Hero

Store in which you left the biggest amount of money (for non-food stuff)?

That would most likely be Amazon.

Would you have noticed the economic crisis if nobody had talked about it?

Yes, thanks to work.

Did you go on vacation? If so, where to?

I went to Vierhouten in the Netherlands for Hacking at Random (but didn't make many pictures). And I spent some days in Rome for the first time.

Best movie?

Star Trek! Got the BluRay for christmas as well

Best TV-show(s)?

Battlestar Galactica (2009 saw me watching Season 4 and the series finale)

Best book?

I'm still making my way through the Malazan series, so I haven't read as many books as I used to. I think I so far enjoyed Reaper's Gale better than my current book brick Toll the Hounds. In between of my Malazan fix I read (or am reading) a couple of non-fiction books, “Code Complete”, “jQuery in Action”, “Unlocking Android” and “The Passionate Programmer”. No idea which one of them was or is the best, but “The Passionate Programmer” so far was definitely the most universally helpful one.

Most loved game?

I think it's still Little Big Planet.

Best song?

Uhm… well… I have no bloody idea.

Worst catchy tune?

I think I have to go with Kaddi here and say “Pokerface” by Lady Gaga (the fact that the song came up in my head AGAIN just because I read Kaddi's blogpost should suffice to legitimate this claim ). The last few days I've had some horrible issues with “Bad Horse Chorus” from the Dr. Horrible Soundtrack though

Best public event?

Hm… I guess the HAR, as that would also be the only one I attended this year I think.

Best private gathering?

That would most certainly be the wedding of my best friend ZiB

Things you did for the first time?

A lot… at the moment I can't think of anything else though than my first car break-down on a german Autobahn including all that security vest and breakdown triangle stuff plus a towing by the ADAC3).

Did you craft something?

Actually I did. I crotcheted some lemmings, a mole plushy and some other stuff.

Where did you spend christmas?

At my parent's.

Do you have your own christmas tree at home?

Yes, although it's an artificial one.

Did you manage to get together all the christmas presents in time for the 24th of December?

Yes, got a bit close though this year.

Best present for you?

Lame as that might sound, but that would probably the fact that my parents are getting themselves a puppy and visiting said puppy, its siblings and its parents for the first time shortly after christmas.

Most fun in giving a present?

An old fashioned mechanical alarm clock for my parents (to keep the puppy company in its first weeks and because those old fashioned things are simply awesome). The gift kept ticking until two days before christmas (as I had tried the clock to make sure it worked) and it felt like giving away a time bomb

What did you do on New Year's Eve?

Relax at home and watched Gran Torino with Phil.

Does this planning for New Year's stress you so much as well?

No, I simply just don't do any planning, that helps.

Do you have any New Year's Resolutions?

No, don't believe in those

Is there anything you want to do for the first time in the coming year?

Write my first Android application I guess.

All in all: Was it an awesome year, a mediocre one or rather a stoopid one?

I wouldn't call it awesome (too much stress for that ), but it was definitely one of the better ones

Update: Ahhh, I forgot to answer one question. Fixed it!

Some of you might already have noticed thanks to my dent and tweet last night: I wrote a small Firefox extension for posting to soup.io called FireSoup that closely mirrors the bookmarklet behaviour (and even uses soup's bookmarklet page) but does circumvent the issues with posting pages that have JavaScript disabled (e.g. by the means of NoScript). I was quite fed up with having to (temporarily) allow a myriad of pages to execute JavaScript just to post a quote or a picture to my soup from it via the bookmarklet, and so I took apart said bookmarklet and successfully wrapped it into an extension. If you happen to have had the same issues in the past, you might want to take a look.

PS: I'm all in favour for exchanging the icon of the extension for a less ugly soup dish but I lack the necessary skills to do so. If you want to help, I'm all game

Lemmings

A while ago, I stumbled across this cute crotcheting pattern suitable for creating lemmings by June Gilbank. I haven't touched crotchet hooks since third grade, so I just saved it in my mental “how cute is that!” folder, prolly to never be tried myself.

Funnily enough, last weekend an unexplainable urge to craft something arose in me and I remembered the pattern, so I used a small break at work on monday to head to the next store to get myself the necessary supplies. It took a while for me to remember on how to do the stitches and stuff, and a very stressy week prevented me from doing much experiments before wednesday, but on thursday evening this little fellow got finished:

Say hello to my first walker.

Next thing I'll do is create one or two blockers for him so he a) doesn't fall off the table and b) has some friends

On a little side note: I didn't find eyes for the little guy, so I first tried with the tiniest buttons I could find at the store, but those made him somehow look creepy. So I thought a bit about an alternative and came up with a simple self made knot-based solution made out of black wool. IMHO he really looks adorable now

	crotcheting,
	lemmings,
