You might have noticed the newly arisen lack of updates in this here my blog. The reason is – simple as that – a complete lack of motivation to write anything, be it a blog post or code in my spare time. Might be that I'm overworked, might be something seasonal, I don't know, but currently I can't bring myself to write about neither my trip to Rome three weeks ago nor all that other stuff happening all around me. Truly sorry!

I just hope that motivation regarding both blogging and coding will stop hiding somewhat soonish, because I'm seriously missing it. Badly.

It's been two weeks now since my anxiously awaited new toy arrived: the HTC Hero, the newest addition to the Android family on the market. I'd been circling around the thought of ditching my Nokia E70 for an Android powered phone for quite some time now, and finally decided on actually doing so after the first pre-release reviews of the Hero came in.

After the first two weeks between myself and my silver grey1) Hero I can say that spending my money on that device was one of my best ideas for quite some time now. Despite the claims of many online reviews that the interface feels sluggish, I have had a very pleasant and responsive experience so far2). Hardwarewise, the device feels solid and lies really good in the hand. The only thing that bothers me a bit about it is the location of the (frequently used) back button in the lower right section, which makes it hard to reach if one's holding the device in the right hand. But after some time I even got the hang of that. I traded in the hardware keyboard on my E70 for an onscreen keyboard on the Hero, but also got a nice hardware trackball with it, so that's a fair deal The multitouch screen which makes up for most of the Hero's front has a sharp display, great reaction and is even readable in direct sunlight (HAR2009 approved). No complaints about reception of both GSM and WiFi as well. GPS fix is fast and quite accurate. One of the largest complaints about the Hero's predecessors – battery life – so far has been a non issue for me as well: the battery lasts through the day even under heavy use (lots of WiFi and UMTS activity), and gets only down to about 50% on normal use (some WiFi and UMTS here and there, some gaming during breaks at work). As the Hero is charged using a simple micro USB cable, I hooked up one of my spare micro USB chargers besides my nightstand and use that for charging up the thing overnight.

On the software side, the Hero comes with a modified Android version. HTC added its own UI called “HTC Sense”, which must have been a lovechild of HTC's TouchFLO for its Windows Mobile handsets and the Android UI. Personally, I find it to be very nice looking. It also comes with seven instead of the three homescreens of devices with the default Android UI, and a nice onscreen keyboard with haptic feedback (the phone gives a short vibration as acknowledgement for hitting a key) and auto-correction. After some initial getting-used-to, I found the keyboard to be very usable, and am now at a point were I type a lot faster on it than I ever did on the hardware keyboard of my E70, thanks to the superb auto-correction which allows me to hit the wrong key from time to time3).

The HTC Hero in “silver grey”

HTC also added in some custom widgets and application, including a quite nice mail client and a not so nice Twitter client: Honestly, I demand this thing to be fixed in the way that it uses SSL for communicating with the Twitter servers instead of sending my credentials over the air in plaintext. But all in all, I like what HTC has done to improve Android.

Besides the stuff already “on board”, I found a rather large number of very cool apps and games in the Android market. As a todo list manager, I use Astrid 4), which combined with its RTM synching capabilities simply rocks5). For my microblogging needs, I use Twidroid in combination with my identi.ca account (a pro version with multi-account-support – among other things – is on its way according to the devel blog). For managing notes of all kind (text, audio, pictures, checklists and the like), I bought myself Note Everything Pro (after playing around with the free Note Everything for a couple of days). Gamingwise, I got hooked on Abduction6) and Solitaire 7). There's also a large number of other great apps installed on the phone right now, but I guess I'll present these in a separate blog post. Suffice to say: there even is a port of the ScummVM available

So all in all, I'm a very very happy camper with the HTC Hero. If you think you can't live without a hardware keyboard, your best bet regarding an Android device will probably be the HTC Dream aka T-Mobile G1. If money is an issue, the still quite expensive Hero8) might also be not the best of ideas and getting a HTC Dream or HTC Magic might be a better idea. Besides that I can full heartily recommend the Hero, so if you want an Android device, get that one

PS: Here are some reviews that helped me in my decision:

“Dogfight: iPhone 3GS vs. HTC Hero” parts 1, 2 and 3

1)

2)
This might of course be due to me not plastering every single one of the available 7 homescreens with eyecandy and surely also background activity rich widgets.

3)

5)
I <3 the nag screens!

6)
and not only me, but also a colleague *g*

7)
yes, I admit it, I love those silly card games

8)
I payed 460€ on its release date

ToMI Chapter 1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal

Nineteen years ago, a gaming series was born that was destined to become my most favourite of them all: Monkey Island. It spawned four games1), the first three of which I played through more than once just for the joy of it. To this day, I define the coolness of an electronic gadget by its ability to run ScummVM and thus Monkey Island on it.

A couple of weeks back, I came across the news about Telltale Games publishing an episodic new installment of the series, called "Tales of Monkey Island" or from here on ToMI. After I came down from my sudden lapse in coherence2), I immediately preordered the season for PC. The first episode, “Launch of the Screaming Narwhal”, was released on July 7th, and I spent the last two evenings playing it through. To quickly summarise my review: “MONKEY ISLAND!!!”

The Adobe Flash Plugin is needed to display this content.

If you don't mind, I'll leave the summary of the plot to others3) and get straight to my µ-review. The puzzles so far lived up to its predecessors, and I even got stuck three or four times4). The writing is MI-esque as well, as are the voice actors, including Dominic “Guybrush” Armato and Alexandra “Elaine” Boyd, and of course the music by Michael Land.

What struck me as somewhat odd first is the control scheme. ToMI isn't a real Point'n'Click adventure anymore regarding Guybrush's movements; you instead drag him around with mouse (somewhat like in NWN) or use WASD. That got me puzzled a couple of times when I clicked on the screen and that Might Pirate(TM) didn't walk where he was supposed to. Additionally, there's no action vocabulary anymore. The only thing you can do to interact is left-click, and depending on the object Guybrush either takes it, looks at it, talks to it, uses it, … – you don't know it beforehand. I'd have preferred an interface with a bit more choice like in CoMI. Also I encountered a couple of bugs: Guybrush warping a couple of meters forwards, Guybrush suddenly becoming invisible, and even a doubled item for a couple of seconds. Nothing serious though.

All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase, and am looking forward to the next four episodes throughout the next four months If you are as of yet unsure whether to buy the game or not, there's a demo available.

	tomi,
	monkey island,
	mi,
	game,
	review,
	adventure

1)
although I usually try to forget the fourth one – the controls where horrible, and I didn't like the graphics very much either – and usually succeed given that it wasn't even close to being as memorable as parts 1 to 3

2)
“Monkey Island! MONKEY ISLAND!!!”

3)
an advantage of this approach is also that you don't have to spoiler yourself if you don't want to just by reading this post

4)
to my defense I have to add that I had had a rather tiring work day on both evenings

I just learned (by accident and purely out of curiosity) that Eclipse has included an autorefresh of the workspace for quite some time now (since 3.1). Might help to get rid of those F5 orgies on your externally touched projects

You can find it in Eclipse' preferences1) under General > Workspace. Simply check the box that says “Refresh automatically” and enjoy the luxury of automatic workspace refreshs.

Posters for localhost

Some time ago Andi presented his newly acquired LucasArts game poster collection, including Monkey Island 1 and 2, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle and Zak McKracken. Being the big point-and-click fan and Monkey Island junkie that I am, I immediately got inspired to get myself a poster collection of my most favourite adventures.

Alas, the thread from which the high res image downloads originated did not include “Simon the Sorcerer” yet – my first ever adventure game, which will forever have a special place in my heart. So I bravely registered an account there and asked if someone could provide me with high res scans of the game boxes so I could give it a try myself. But I got something even better: Laserschwert, the mastermind behind the other poster downloads 1) himself, got hold of the retail boxes of STS1 and 2 and turned them into poster downloads. YAY!

So, after some pondering (of course together with demod) which posters to get printed (like Andi in 60x45cm), I now present thee with the new view of my living room and the stairs2).

“Simon the Sorcerer” and “The Dig” above my couch.

For the living room, I decided on “Simon the Sorcerer” and “The Dig”. STS was my first Point-and-click adventure ever, and my parents and me plus several friends spent hours together working on the puzzles3). The Dig on the other hand was the first english game I ever played, and it really melted the ice between me and that language. I can vividly remember sitting in my room in front of the PC, with both voice and text output turned on in the game and the english-german dictionary right beside the keyboard. Ahhh, what a wonderful vocabulary boost

But of course, I couldn't keep my hands off Monkey Island either…

The “Monkey Island” trilogy4). From the top…

… and from the bottom of our staircase.

So we now have three posters of “Secret of Monkey Island”, “LeChuck's Revenge” and “The Curse of Monkey Island” in chronological order from kitchen to front door What wonderful memories that display triggers… Really makes me look forward to the already pre-ordered "Tales of Monkey Island" by Telltale Games and the official remake of MI1 by LucasArts, which I'll sure as hell add to my collection as well

	lucasarts,

stupid picture angles thanks to the rather cramped living situation here, sorry

It took me almost a year to get through it – last sunday I managed to complete it in two hours. Replay value: the major problem with adventures

Dear 389 delegates who voted “yes” on the ballot just now: Fsck you.

There's a new MustHaveGadget™ for social networkers around the globe: the Poken. Or at least that's what the official website, the buzz both on identi.ca and Twitter and even a Google Tech Talk want to make us believe.

My “Alien” Poken, as a whole and apart.

Pokens are small keyring pendants in the shape of a small creature with its hand extended for a high five… sorry, four. Sounds boring right? Well, the hand actually is a small RFID/NFC enabled USB stick (and the creature it's housing) that can exchange IDs with other Pokens and save it on its internal memory for later retrieval via any computer with a free USB port1) and a browser. With the saved IDs you actually collect the contacts of the people you touched Pokens with2): once you synch up your Poken with the Poken website, the cards of your contacts are added to your profile. If one of your contacts now updates or adds to her details, you are still always up to date. Business card 2.0, outdated information on paper good bye.

I gotta admit, with all this fun hardware and ideas involved I got interested, and so I got demod and myself both one of those little devices to give it a go. And was quite disappointed. Not by the hardware – once activated and in high-five position with each other, the two Pokens immediately exchanged IDs and emitted a pulsing greenish light in their hands to inform us both about this crazy random happenstance. So I plugged in my Poken into my computer, opened the HTML page on the thumbdrive, got directed to the Poken Register-Your-Device webpage, registered and then wanted to fill in my profile. First thing that struck me as annoying: the list of social networks does neither include Friendfeed, nor identi.ca, Delicious, Youtube, … none of the networks I'm part of seem to exist in the Poken world, besides Xing and flickr. But ok, the whole thing is still new I thought to myself, and decided to add my XING profile. Which was when I recoiled in sudden terror at what was asked of me:

You've got to be fraking kidding me!

Wait a minute… They are seriously asking me for my XING password there? A quick check with a fake one revealed, yes, they are actually trying to log into my account. WTF? Shocked as I was, I clicked on the “Why do we ask for this info?” link conveniently placed right next to the password field – I wonder how it got there – and read the explanation. So, the Poken service wants to confirm that I'm actually entering the profile information regarding my account and not someone else's by logging into it with the data I provide. They state they do not save this data, but sorry, that simply is not sufficient for entrusting someone with my passwords in my book. And not only are there mechanisms for exactly this kind of verification issues already available, no, IMHO it is simply not necessary to verify this information as long as the Poken isn't anything else than an electronic business card. Nobody verifies what I print on my paper cards, so why did the Poken team decide they should?

Anyway… this password thing seriously ruined the whole Poken concept for me. I would have overlooked the quite strong Beta- or even Alpha-feel of the site3) and the kind of irritating hype in some parts of the net regarding that device, but as long as the Poken people don't rethink their design regarding account verification, the Poken is nothing I can recommend to anyone. Too bad I already wasted good money on it.

Update: Andi seems to share my opinion about the Poken and also did a writeup.

	poken,

1)
MacBook Air users are prolly challenged here already … SCNR

2)
somehow that sounds dirty…

3)
the settings dialog hiccuped twice on me while playing around with the non-password-asking parts of my profile

Today I did something I obviously do way too infrequently: I went on a smallish trip around the “neighbourhood” with demod. With all that sunny weather and the blue sky we grabbed our bikes and just started cycling without a real plan on where exactly to go to, besides “somewhere green behind Kranichstein”. And as you can see we actually found green:

It is always surprising how rural and close to nature you can get just after one or two kilometers from our frontdoor – and I nearly had forgotten how much I like the juicy green color of a forest in spring.

We drove 15km1) (including a trip to our favourite Pizzeria to pick up dinner ) in something like 2h (top speed 32.3 km/h), and it was a very enjoyable saturday afternoon, despite the mosquitoes constantly trying to drink my blood. Next time I'll make sure to prepare better against that plague

	trip,

	green

1)

It's been quite some time now since I last presented a favourite of board game of mine. I want continue that – so far short – series of blog posts nevertheless by introducing you to "Kill Doctor Lucky". Like the previously presented games it's been around now for some years, being created in 1996 by James Ernest without me realizing it until last year thanks to ZiB1). In Germany, it is available in a very low-tech edition2) in black and white and no included player tokens3) from Truant, and internationally in a more traditional “Deluxe” edition from Titanic Games4). It can be played by 2 to 8 players with the length of a game usually increasing the more players are playing.

As you might already have guessed by the name, your job is to accomplish what has to be accomplished prior to any Cluedo session: you have to kill Doctor Lucky who's obliviously wandering around his mansion. The problem is that you are not the only person trying to whack the old man and that the other players therefore will do their best to prevent you from accomplishing your goal in order for them to accomplish their's. The game is played on a board representing the Doctor's mansion with rooms and corridors. The rooms carry a number (0 to 19) which dictates the movement of the Doctor – after each player's turn, he will move to the room with the next highest number or the first room if he was previously in the last5).

Besides the board, there is also a stack of cards which contains four types: movement cards, room cards, weapon cards, and failure cards. The first two center on the movement of both the players and the Doctor. Using a movement card, a player can move himself or the Doctor a number of rooms6) indicated on the card in any direction. With a room card, a player can “beam” himself or the Doctor to the room written on the card. Weapon and failure cards are combat related. With weapon cards, one can increase his attack value against the Doctor. Using failure cards, the other players can neutralize this attack value in order to prevent the attack from being successful.

I won't go into detail about the rules here now (you can find the rules of a playable online version at gametable online here though), but rest assured that they provide for damn fun sessions with lots of attempts to murder the old man. Additionally to “Kill Doctor Lucky” there also exists a kind of inverted version with “Save Doctor Lucky” as well as the expansion “Kill Doctor Lucky … and his little dog too” and some new floor plant variants. Also you can find some rule additions/variants online, like "The Ghost of Mrs. Lucky".

I have now played quite a number of sessions with small groups of two to three players as well as large groups with 6 to 8 and have always had fun. Sessions with more players tend to take a significant amount of time though – at least according to my experience – so plan in two hours for a session if you happen to have five or more friends over.

PS: Yes, I am still alive, and I hope I'll get rid of that writer's block soonish as well, at least ideas regarding blog posts are starting to make the rounds in my head again

	boardgame,
	favourite,
	doctor lucky,
	recommendation

1)
good tips like this are what friends are there for, right?

2)
analogous to the first release by Cheapass Games

3)
which leads to some creativity when acquiring this game – I've seen Dragonball figures in use as pawns, personally used the good old classic ones from Mensch ärgere dich nicht and know about at least one person planning to modell her's in polymer clay

4)
with slightly adjusted rules or so I've heard

5)
one could say, he moves through the ring of congruence classes to the module 20

6)
movement of one room is specified as walking through one door, which are painted on the gaming board

Yes, it's become a bit quiet here again, I know. The reason would be that I currently simply have nothing blogworthy to say, thanks to me spending my time mostly either at work working or at home reading or gaming. While I thoroughly enjoy this1) there's not much to talk about2) As I tend to have quite a thirst for technical reading material these days though, my resurrected bookmark list at delicious started to grow again over the course of the last two weeks – maybe there's something interesting to find

Which brings me to uttering an open “whoa!” regarding the current delicious firefox extension. The last time I used delicious (that must have been like 2005 or 2006), bookmarking was kinda tedious and asked for the hacking together of bookmarklets to accomplish the same goal that I can achieve today by a simple press of Ctrl+D3). So: Kudos!

1)
yes, both work and freetime, I seem to have finally found the right job for myself!

2)
or at least nothing I'm allowed to

3)
just having to enter some tags after having selected the descriptional text on the page to bookmark already

So, here are seven facts about the foosel:

I've never been at a disco in my whole life and I don't have the slightest feeling of regret about this.

As a small child I couldn't stand cheese. I've loved it ever since my parents tricked me into actually trying it1).

I have a scar on my right knee from falling up some stairs at the local playground when I was a child.

I always wanted to be a boy. That stupid wish finally vanished when I hit puberty and when I discovered that I could still be me with all my boyish hobbies even without actually being one.

Puppets have scared me for some years now. Before, I just didn't like them. Maybe Chinga is to blame. I've also never owned anything from that Barbie stuff in my whole life and am quite happy about this.

I was offline until 2001. Thus my knowledge about anything networky is still quite new.

One of my incisors is actually glued together as I managed to run against a pillar back in elementary school and break it in half. It has lasted for 18 years now although my dentist back then “promised” me that it would break for good within 10.

As I simply can't think of seven people to tag with this who aren't already included in Andi's identi.ca follower group, I'll just leave it to whoever wants to take part in this to feel tagged now – yes, I'm talking about you.

Memo to self: Ask Andi if it's okay to also start on writing a “100 things about myself” list here…

Update: See my newly created 100 facts list2) for some more stuff. Thanks to Andi for the inspiration

	meme,
	seven,
	tagging

1)
by declaring it as “Urlaubswurst” or “vacation sausage” on our yearly trip to italy when I was hungry and there were simply no sandwhiches left without cheese – that must have been when I was 4 I think

2)
only a bit over 30 items so far, TBC…

Making Windows ready for the Desktop

As you might already have known I recently started on my new job at Capgemini sd&m. I won't write about that now, just rest assured that I simply love it there so far and am completely convinced now that the decision to switch was a very very good one.

However, my new working environment dictates the use of Microsoft Windows as the operating system on my work system1), and making that one usable after coding in a Linux environment for the last couple of years proved to be a bit of work.

The first thing that bugged me was the lack of virtual desktops and some of the keyboard shortcuts I configured and got used to in my XFCE setup. Using the free software VirtuaWin I created my usual amount of 8 virtual desktops on the Windows box. For adding shortcuts of my choice I installed AutoHotkey and created myself a script that provides the following:

changed Capslock into another Win-Key

added <kbd>Win</kbd>+<kbd>T</kbd> for spawning a Cygwin terminal (see below)

added <kbd>Win</kbd>+<kbd>G</kbd> for spawning a Console2 terminal (see below) with a DOS prompt

changed <kbd>Win</kbd>+<kbd>E</kbd> to spawning an xplorer2 window (see below)

navigates through the virtual workspaces added with VirtuaWin using <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>Tab</kbd> and <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>Tab</kbd>

Next I installed Cygwin2) and after some trying out found the PuttyCyg terminal to be the best suited one for using Cygwin3). I also installed the UnxUtils and Console2 to make the DOS prompt usable (for the rare case I don't use Cygwin).

While doing some project work I soon discovered4) that the mouse behaviour of Windows is an annoying bit different from Linux as well, namely scrolling the window with the current input focus when using the mouse wheel instead of the one currently beneath the mouse cursor. For changing this I soon thankfully came across KatMouse, yet another free tool that changes the mouse wheel to exactly the behaviour I expect from it.

Next thing troubling me was the clock in the system tray and the lack of any CPU and RAM monitors there that I'm used to in the shape of the Gnome System Monitor applet. Using Samurize and Samurize Clock Client I created my own clock in the tray area including three small graphs showing me the current CPU, RAM and virtual memory usage. Feels better now being able to see that the machine is actually doing something

As an replacement for the Windows Explorer, I installed myself a copy of xplorer2 for which I had bought a license waaay back when I still used Windows as my primary OS – that came in quite handy now. Of course, I also got myself the Sysinternals Suite to add all those little tools to the system that Microsoft somehow forgot to include by default (
procmon.exe
anyone?). Last but not least, I installed Launchy for launching various applications with a quick hit of <kbd>Alt</kbd>+<kbd>Space</kbd>, XnView as an image viewer and – for all my note taking needs – Tomboy for Windows.

After a week now of working with this setup, I can say that while the Windows box still obviously is no Linux, I at least can feel somewhat home on it now with my usual workflow staying hardwired and thus a very high productivity

	windows,

	productivity,
	software

1)
Lenovo Thinkpad T400

2)
to get a usable command prompt

3)
ANSI color support AND fully maximisable

4)
while jumping around between a browser window with project documentation and my Eclipse workspace

While monitoring the current bunnymeme list set up at delicious, I had the idea to map the current spread of the meme as a directed graph. Using graphviz'
dot
this can be quite easily achieved, and thus below you can find the current map of the bunnyverse1). Enjoy!

Update: I highlighted those nodes already providing the world with a bunny. Idea courtesy of splitbrain.

Update: The graph is now also available in an image-mapped version. Thanks to xtaran for the idea.

Update: And another interactive version of the graph using splitbrain's newly released graphgear plugin. Enjoy! The current dotfile used to generate all this stuff can BTW be found here.

Update: Thanks to some weird behaviour in all tested2) graphviz installations the image-mapped version is currently imagemap-less. I hope it will return to being imagemappy, but right now simply can't find a reason why the generation of the map data by
dot -Tcmapx
that worked like a charm on sunday only produces empty maps everywhere since monday.

Update: And the imagemap is back! Thanks go to splitbrain (again ) for tracking this down

Update: I removed the date of the last update from this blogpost since I think I disrupted the RSS feed of this blog enough as it is with all the bunny updates However, the graph is still being updated once I get to know of new bunnies, and the current image is now embedded and a link to the imagemapped version of the graph.

	meme,
	bunny,
	graph,
	map,
	graphviz,
	dot

1)
I'll try to keep that up to date over the next days, as long as things don't get out of hand

2)
thanks splitbrain for helping out here as well

I took another look at the bunny and it might be that paleontologist in the future will now also have a chance to take part in this meme….

I'll make sure to help the bunny get warm again with some hot chocolate and blankets once the ice melts, I promise.

Captchas fixed

Thanks to an incompatibility between the current PHP suhosin patch and the Dokuwiki captcha plugin, captchas were a bit too effective the last couple of days or weeks. The issue should now be fixed, so commenting should be possible for unregistered/not logged in users again. Thanks to Andi for the heads-up!

The same issue btw also plagued the monsterid script and lead to very random monsters on each refresh. I implemented a fix for this as well, using parts of the hashed seed for calculating the monster part numbers instead of the PHP PRNG. While that approach isn't as random as the PRNG, it certainly should be sufficient for the generation of random user images and does work with suhosin hardened PHP setups.

	blog,
	captcha,
	monsterid,
	srand
