Songs for charidee... oh and for Euro 2012...

After their poor showing at the last World Cup the public have awakened to the fact that some players are no more than overpaid self-interested prima donnas. This has also affected the England-song-for-a major-tournament ratio. Two years ago (thanks to the sweet F.A. deciding their would be no official anthem) I was inundated with emails from budding amateur artists with their songs for England.

With a month to go until Euro 2012 this time there nowt * And I’m actually glad about that.

* Actually I'm lying there are a few but I'm denying their existence.

You’d think I’d be grumbling because it’s my stock-in-trade. Without these football songs I’d be nothing.
But if you had to sit and listen through what I had two years ago…

The less is the better.
It is quality you should have and not quantity.

Coming up to this tournament though and there’s no sign of either of these. So who to turn to..? Where do we go for our terrible tunes ? And the answer: To the celebrities of course !

And coincidently both “home” countries have gone with the cheezy…

ENGLAND:

Starting with the current king of all footballing catchphrases: Chris Kamara.

He’s teamed up with a band to record a sing with profits going to the Marie Curie Cancer Care:

Chris, an Ambassador for Marie Curie Cancer Care, is donating 100% of his proceeds from his Euro 2012 Single ‘Sing 4 England’ to the charity, in memory of his mum Irene who was looked after by Marie Curie Nurses at home before she passed away.

Late breaking news: The Football Association have chosen it to be the official England/Euro 2012 song .

Yes so… err… because it is for charidee I will hold my tongue. All for a good cause and that…

UPDATE: The video producers very kindly emailed and here is the official video:

+ Thanks to a YouTube user who recorded an interview with Kammy on a local news programme:

» You can preview/pre-order the single via iTunes
» More about the song: <a href="http://www.sing4england.net/"target="_blank">www.sing4england.net
» Facebook: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/KammyKampaign"target="_blank">facebook.com/KammyKampaign
- or if you really can’t stand the song and just want to donate to Marie Curie Cancer Care …

Republic of Ireland:

Until now I never knew how bad Ireland’s debt problem was. I heard about their austerity measures but never realised it went as far as just using the one pop act to cover all major events.

Singing (and of course, for charity) for the Republic of Ireland is… Jedward:

….not content with supporting the Boys In Green our two boys have decided that this track should also support the brilliant work of their favourite charity The ISPCC, so all proceeds from this one are going directly to help the ISPCC continue their fantastic work for Ireland’s children.

Still Not Enough?

Well, how’s this? Ever the inventive pair John & Edward want to get all their fans (and indeed all of Ireland) wearing their special Green Capes in a show of support for Trap’s Green Army as they head to Poland so they’ve arranged that the GreenCapes can be bought at all Elvery Stores nationwide for €5.00 each, again with all the proceeds going to The ISPCC. Oh and in these recessionary times to keep the cost of the capes down they got the gang at BestQuote.ie insurance to sponsor the capes and thus make sure all the money goes directly to The ISPCC.

And There’s More!!!!

Oh yeah, we nearly forgot! Joining the boys in this their first cartoon video are a host of their showbiz pals including Mrs. Brown, Louis Walsh, Miriam O’Callaghan, Kathryn Thomas, Dustin, Judge, Zig & Zag, Bosco, Bill O’Herlihy, Keith Duffy, Jay Duffy, Bernard Dunne, Paul McGrath, Colm Hayes, Rachel Allen, Glenda Gilsen, Martin King, Larry Gogan and PJ Gallagher.

» Buy the song via iTunes (Ireland).
» or donate to the ISPCC (don’t have to be in Ireland to donate).

BUT…

The above single isn’t the official single for the Republic of Ireland squad. The FAI, unlike their English counterparts pulled their finger out and got something sorted in plenty of time:

‘The Rocky Road to Poland’ has been recorded by Damien Dempsey, Danny O’Reilly (Coronas), Bressie and The Dubliners (John Sheehan, Barney McKenna, Eamonn Campbell and Patsy Watchhorn), and was written by the Today FM Show’s listeners. Also, all proceeds are going to the John Giles Foundation and Today FM’s Shave or Dye campaign for the Irish Cancer Society.

The Irish Euro 2012 Squad and Ray D’Arcy Show listeners also feature on the track which was produced by the legendary John Reynolds.

As you will see and hear from the video they have a much more sensible traditional Irish sound and yes… they have the entire squad singing (or more like chanting) on the song.

» Purchase the tune via <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/ie/album/rocky-road-to-poland-single/id521396628"target="_blank">iTunes (Ireland)
» or donate to the Irish Cancer Society
» and the John Giles Foundation

… a last minute thrown together podcast with some of their musical “highlights”

Despite what you think about the team…well to be more precise… certain individuals in that team… you’ve still got to salute the achievement by Chelsea F.C in reaching two cup finals.

Sadly though, after all of this, I still don’t think that Roberto Di Matteo will be given the job full time.

What if they win both cups and manage to finish 4th ? Maybe then Roman might be persuaded.

But I’m not here to speculate on the the club, the players or the future. There are plenty of other websites out there which do a far better job with that. The purpose of this post and of FootieAndMusic is to entertain you. So please maestro – play on…

Tracklistings:

A bit all over the place, a bit like Chelski’s season really. The inclusion of Middlerow’s “Right Proper Charlie” is a crap commentary by me on the whole John Terry thing. There is a link with the song though – the track was on the Mean Machine soundtrack, which starred one time Chelsea player Vinnie Jones.

The 1970′s.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of Clemence, it was the age of Shilton…

…and I’ll stop there before the estate of Charles Dickens launches a lawsuit.

When I was knee high to the proverbial, I had the privilege of watching Ray Clemence up close. I was there in the Kop, right behind those goals. Within touching distance of a man that to me at that age – looked like a giant.

So I obviously had a bias when it came to him and Peter Shilton. I always thought that Ray should have been in goal for England. It’s a pity that the national team was so inept back then, I’m sure that he would have played some blinders in the 1974 & ’78 World Cups…

Ah but there’s the “who’s the better keeper ?” competition. Was it Shilton or Clemence ?
In the end it was Shilts who went on to win those many, many caps – and some say that he could’ve had at least 50 more if it wasn’t for Clem.

But I still think Ray Clemence was the better. A legend for me to this day.

…

Right that’s enough filler. Now let’s look at the the pair’s attempt to destroy their reputations…

This is another one where I have absolutely zero info on the whys and wherefores.

Recorded and released in 1980… ah. Maybe the 1980 European Championships …?

Ah I may have it.

Right at this moment… I know of no other songs recorded for <a href="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/ITV/Europa80.html"target="_blank">Europa 80
<-- click the link good stuff
. So this might have been... a semi-official release.

Both goalkeepers got a runout in the finals (England P3 W1 D1 L1 and went home) and in their match against Spain (which they won - but it was too late, they were already knocked out so it was a dead rubber) Ray Clemence put in a vintage performance.

From UEFA.com:

...Trevor Brooking and Tony Woodcock scored with firm low shots, the first from a knock-down, the other after Luis Arconada had saved from Terry McDermott - but England had certainly been put on the spot: Spain's penalties were the feature of the match.

Clemence save
Both were awarded for fouls, by Ray Clemence on Jesús Zamora and David Watson on Enrique Saura. Dani put away the first soon after coming on, then the second after 53 minutes, only for the referee to order a retake, either because Dani had paused in his run-up or because other players had encroached in the penalty area. Having put his first two kicks to the goalkeeper's left, he went the other way this time, and Clemence made his only penalty save in international football.

That's great. Found some background info, additional filler. But I've gone off track - back to their attempt to shoot themselves in the foot...

Sadly for us Peter and Ray decided to do a cover version. I think this was a commentary on their friendly rivalry and it is painful. (Not the rivalry, the song). The B side unfortunately isn't much better.

Man United killed Rod Hull you know.

Oh you knew.

I bet you didn’t know though that there is another bit of bad luck also associated him and that puppet…

Ah you are not going to get me to do a bio are you ? Everybody knows about Rod Hull and Emu don’t they ? Alright I’ll add something:

Back in the day the kid’s telly presenters regularly assaulted the children on their shows.

(Imagine them doing that now, not even allowed in the same room these days…)

But another children’s entertainer took it one step further and not only attacked the kids with that arm, but his fellow celebs too. I remember he used to goose the females with particular vigour.

Then for no apparent reason in 1974 he got a call from somebody at Bristol Rovers asking him to record a single with their football team.

“Ah” You are thinking. “Must be a version of Goodnight Irene, a song associated with the club.”
Sorry. No. This is far from it and I’m sure that any fan with a long memory will want everyone to forget that they did this.

With some other songs posted here I’ve managed to gleam even a tiny smidgen of info as to why they released a single, but with this one. Nothing.

The only thing I found via their Wikipedia entry was that in 1973-74 season Bristol Rovers were runners up in Division Three and were promoted to the 2nd Division. Let’s go and record a song with Rod Hull and Emu in celebration. No just doesn’t sit right does it.

UPDATE:
Just listened to the song again (things I do for you) and it was that Bristol Rovers were in Division Two.

Cup run ? Nope. But a slightly amusing/farcical thing at the end here:

…The only major cup competition won by Bristol Rovers is the 1972 Watney Cup, when they beat Sheffield United in the final.[15] The club also won the Division Three (South) Cup in 1934–35, as well as winning or sharing the Gloucestershire Cup on 32 occasions. The team has never played in European competition; the closest Rovers came was when they missed out on reaching the international stage of the Anglo-Italian Cup in the 1992–93 season on a coin toss held over the phone with West Ham United.

Anyhoddles… So back in the mists of time, with the real reason lost to the ages now. Rod Hull and Emu went into the studio with the 1974 Bristol Rovers squad and came out with this:

So what have we learnt here today ? I think it’s that Bristol Rovers need to call in a priest or something to get rid of this Emu hex which sits over the club – and you should never climb up on the roof to fix your antenna. Wherever it is…

It’s a question nobody asks and nobody cares for an answer…

He keeps <a href="http://www.footballandmusic.co.uk/venables-is-a-swinger/"target="_blank">singing and <a href="http://www.footballandmusic.co.uk/el-tel-is-singing-for-england/"target="_blank">singing ...

But we here at F&M dare to ask and also dare to not only answer, but give you evidence too.

*ducks flying objects*

It’s been mentioned before on why he sings. Click on the above links to read more. For you lazy arses though to summarise:

“…as a teenager he sang with band leader Joe Loss. At 17 he had to choose between football and singing. “I won the week’s talent contest at Butlins, and was invited back for September. I said to [the manager] Tommy Docherty, ‘Look, I’ve won this competition, I need to go back in September, if that’s all right with you’, and he said, ‘No you can’t do that ’cause you might be in the team’….”

Then finally in 1974 (he was playing for QPR at the time) Venables could hold it no longer and released a single, a cover version of a song made famous by Emile Ford & The Checkmates and Adam Faith amongst others.

So how did this single do in the Top 40 ?

It didn’t.

He must have been furious with Keegan, who actually did bother the lower end of the charts. Once.

But like the original perm this never deterred El Tel and even though nobody listened, he kept on crooning.

So to his 1974 chart attempt… come on play through the pain… run it off now…

Was going to do a mention about them last year when they got promoted, then other things got in the way.
But now I’m back and so are QPR:

Well at the moment they are… but after some recent performances poor old Warnock got the hook and the ambition seeking Mark Hughes is now in his place.

The ex-Man City boss has a decent talent pool now under his command, including ex-City players Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joey Barton. Plus he’s been given a transfer budget and rumour has it he’s looking at the City players Nedum Onuoha and Wayne Bri…

Oh.

But a team of players he signed at his previous clubs will work. Just look at what he did with Roque Sant…

Ah.

Anyways I’m giving a token mention to the events happening now because I’ve little to say about a single released way back when.

- The record label tells me that it was produced by Max Hole and Wayne Bardell, written by Bruce Thomas (later of Elvis Costello and The Attractions), but apart from that there’s no more info.

So the questions are who are/were the Loftus Roadrunners and why should they come to record this in 1977 ?

I looked on Wikipedia to find a summary of that period to see if there was a particular cause of celebration, maybe a cup or a league title or something. But it was more of a nearly something season of just missed out:

…”In 1976-77, QPR failed to recreate their fine form of the previous season in the league, but the cup competitions saw some success. The side reached the semi-finals of the League Cup but lost in a replay to Aston Villa and in their first entry into European football reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup losing to AEK Athens FC on penalties. In 1977 Sexton moved to Manchester United to be succeeded by Frank Sibley and Steve Burtenshaw and two years later QPR slipped into the Second Division.”

Still though, the quarter finals of a european cup. Nothing to be sniffed at there. Sadly they haven’t hit these sort of heights ever since.

But maybe with Hughes it could again. I mean look at what he did in europe with….

I’ll stop there.

Today is October 25th. Today we are #keepingitpeel...

October 25th: We are <a href="http://keepingitpeel.wordpress.com/"target="_blank">#KeepingItPeel

Today is October 25th.

Today is a solemn day, but not for long. Because we don’t mope here. We celebrate.

Celebrate and commemorate a life less ordinary and one that touched hundreds… thousands… dare I say it – millions of people.

But not because of what he did, well yes partly… more because of the music he played.

I’m not going to start listing all the bands/artists he played. Just <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/artists/"target="_blank">pick a letter and see for yourself.

Peelie impacted and influenced my life more than I could say. This is why I started the <a href="http://keepingitpeel.wordpress.com"target="_blank">#KeepingItPeel project. Initially the idea was that we – the people who listened – that we show our appreciation. Then the podcasts came along because once again the BBC, as the did with the John Peel Day</> and with a <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00x22xf"target="_blank">podcast – they abandoned them.

This is why it’s vitally important that all of us continue with #keepingitpeel today and every day. This year and every year.
Not just with the Peel Sessions, but by going out and finding new music. Listening to the new upcoming bands.

Right I’ve prattled on enough. It’s time that I added my contribution to #keepingitpeel today:

As you would expect with a football and music website – plus with John Peel himself being a big football fan, guess what this special edition podcast is about… Yes that’s right. Flower arranging.

My source for this podcast, as it is with all the #KeepingItPeel podcasts is the very excellent <a href="http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/"target="_blank">John Peel Wiki.

As everyone knows John was a huge Liverpool fan, going as far not only getting married <a href="http://i.imgur.com/Tfa5o.jpg"target="_blank">in Liverpool colours, but by giving his children <a href="http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Football#cite_note-3"target="_blank">middle names associated with the club.

The podcast today has items featured on the <a href=http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Football">football section of the John Peel Wiki, as well as material taken from or sent by <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/rossofcourse"target="_blank">ross ofcourse my collaborator on the #KeepingItPeel pods.
Suffice to say if you are a Liverpool fan you will enjoy this. Even if you are not but still a football fan you’ll still like.

Tracklistings (with explanations if needed)
:

Watching along in the studio with Peel at the time was David “Kid” Jensen and Kid asks John about the game and how he feels about it.

The first 14 minutes of his show from <a href="http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/24_June_2004"target="_blank">24th June 2004:

Once again John is watching another crucial match which went the same way at the 1984 game, this time though it was England and unlike Liverpool’s fortunes from the penalty spot, <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/euro_2004/3830451.stm"target="_blank">we all know what happens with England.
Peel has to start his show whilst the game is into extra time. He puts on his favourite song by The Fall at which point Frank Lampard scores, so he then plays the same track again. – Listen to the audio for explanation. Tracks played:
     a) Beny Page – Neck Breaker (12″)
     b) The Fall – Kicker Conspiracy [twice !]

In the clip he mentions Robbie Earl’s goal for Jamaica and plays an excerpt from: Black Congo – Reggae Boyz. *If anyone has the full track please contact me.

Since all those talky podcasts are starting up again this is the last F&M pod for now.

Showing some love to our Gallic cousins across the water with some French football and music…

In 1998 the Gauls were kings on the world. But that was thirteen years ago. Patrick Viera, the last member of that team hung up his boots at the end of last season.

A new generation has emerged but as we witness in the 2010 World Cup, they can’t seem to play as a team. They have great individual talent and many of them are key members of top teams all over Europe, but whether they can achieve the heights they scaled in ’98 and Euro 2000 is uncertain. After their very public meltdown it is going to take some time for Lauren Blanc and co to rebuild confidence – and reputation of their national team.

What about the French football league ? There are many teams we are all familiar with.. Lyon, Marseilles, Paris Saint-Germain… but for some reason this league and those teams don’t get as much attention (in my perception anyway) as the Spanish and Italian leagues get. I’ve checked and neither $ky or ESPN UK have the broadcast rights to Ligue 1. A terrible transgression.

As I’ve mentioned this edition of the F&M podcasts is showing some love to French football with featured music from Ligue 1 teams and excepts from they previous World Cup campaigns too. So sit back and enjoy… FootieAndMusic Podcast – French France:

- There is one more that Fredorarrci recommended a listen but I didn’t manage to include in the above pod. It’s from the former goalkeeper Joël Bats, who is now the goalkeeping coach at Lyon.
In his attempt at singing he didn’t do something about football, nah that’s too obvious. He did it about a snail:

We are jumping on the Premier League season preview bandwagon in our own special way…

Well ok… bit of a lie, we are not really. But this podcast does cover all the teams that are in the Premier League (the toppermost !) this coming season (2011-2012). All the tracks featured are – as far as possible – old tunes. There are a few exceptions which I’ll explain below, but for the most these are songs sung by the teams themselves. Brace yourself.

The songs are in (club) alphabetical order and a few notes about them:

The first track (after the theme) starts with an unknown Arsenal player commenting about the Gunners being branded as boring. Can you name this player ?

Despite their being a large number of Lancashire teams playing in the Premier League there is a severe shortage of music associated with them. And when I say severe I actually mean zero. With the Wigan track I used something previously posted which was more about Wigan Casino rather than the club.
The link was with the song they produced which included a recording of a crowd at a Wigan match.

As mentioned most of these were randomly selected and there are a few FA Cup tracks added which in our opinion, are far worse than the club songs. Once again – you have been warned.
