Hello and welcome to my latest look at what has been passing through the football filter this week….

On the face of it was a sedate Carling Cup league match in South Yorkshire. But try telling that to the Man United fans who, in their wisdom, decided to trash the food stall on the concourse at Barnsley. THE GUARDIAN reports on the potential consequences for those caught.

Swine flu has also been the hot topic as football clubs prove not to be immune to the virus. THE INDEPENDANT report that QPR are the latest club to have players struck down.

What’s going on at Hull? Amid rumours of financial oblivion and a departing chairman boss Phil Brown is still holding onto his job – just. WHEN SATURDAY COMES gives us a good insight into the past few years at Hull and perhaps a case of unrealistic expectations.

Strachan’s back! After a brief sojourn North of the border Gordon Strachan made his return to English Championship football with Middlesbrough. THE NORTHERN ECHO gave him a local welcome and set out his task ahead.

First Celtic and Rangers, now the giants of Faroe Islands football have backed the idea of an Atlantic league according to BACK OF THE NET NEWS Will it happen? It’s doubtful, and if teams from the Faroe Islands are allowed in why not the likes of Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen??

Like your goals scored from distance? Well FLAT BACK FOUR has gathered a handy list of and video clips of the best goals scored from behind the halfway line. And yes, Beckham’s is there.

And finally…

In keeping with the ’spooky’ time of year THE MIRROR have come up with the best Halloween themed footballers – The Nightmare on Elmander Street is my particular favourite.

Hello and welcome to the latest look at what as been passing through the Football Filter this week.

The managerial merry-go-round looks set to get a kick-start as twitchy chairman hover their fingers over the trigger. One of those managers under pressure is Hull’s Phil Brown. But after his heroic Premier League survival last year is Brown the victim of raised expectations? JUST FOOTBALL takes a closer look.

The haves and the have nots have been highlighted this week. First off Arsenal announced pre-tax profits of £45.5m, with match-day revenue exceeding £100m for the first time.

The figures have been digested and assessed over at Soccerlens.
Liverpool could also be in the money with rumours of a Saudi Prince wanting to invest in the club, THE INDEPENDENT has all the details.

And the have nots? Well WHEN SATURDAY COMES reports that the end is nigh for Hyde United as the Cheshire club were wound up following unpaid debts of £122,000. John Terry earns that in about 4 days…..

Lists, lists and more lists were the order of the week in many of the papers. THE TIMES gave us the 50 people who fouled up football. Yes, Ashley Cole is in there.

THE MIRROR meanwhile, brought us the top ten scary managers.

With Didier Drogba netting his 100th goal for Chelsea last weekend THE MIRROR also reminds us of the best of the Ivory Coast International’s Chelsea career over the past four years.
And finally…

With Australia’s A league failing to capture the publics imagination, competition chief Archie Fraser gave us all an example of how NOT to promote your own league. BACK OF THE NET NEWS has all the details.

Having used twitter for quite a while now I thought I would put together a list of all the footballers and ex footballers who I have found that are tweeting. Some of them are very very debatable…..tis very hard to know how legit some of them are. Will mention my skepticism where relevant

Mark Bright – Legit fo sure: http://twitter.com/MarkBrighty

Daniel Sturridge – could be, hasn’t used it in a while: http://twitter.com/Danny_Sturridge

Robert Earhshaw – seems possibly legit, I think the more important question is if it ain’t legit why is someone impersonating old R.Earnshaw of all the possible twitters in the world: http://twitter.com/robertearnshaw

Landon Donavon – legit, as always America sportsmen catch on to the latest online tools quicker than their UK counterparts, but he hasn’t used it of late: http://twitter.com/Landon_Donovan

James Beattie – probably legit but he hasn’t used it in months: http://twitter.com/JSBeattie

Rory Delap – has some banter with Beattie and Shawcross, defo legit and reasonably regular poster: http://twitter.com/DelapSCFC

Ryan Shawcross -continuing the Stoke link, but hasn’t used it in months: http://twitter.com/RShawcross87

Matthew Etherington- also hasnt used it in months: http://twitter.com/Etherington26

Danny Dichio – Toronto F player and regular on the old tweets: http://twitter.com/DannyDichio

Steven Gerrard – very very debatable, although his mundane comments lead me to believe it is him : http://twitter.com/Steven_Gerrard

Harry Redknapp – not sure if this is real but apparently he’s too busy to do it anymore, a posting he made in the last week – lazy: http://twitter.com/harrysblog . He even has a blog http://harryredknappsblog.blogspot.com/ but I am just not sure if it really is him. I hope so as it is on our Tottenham page! – http://www.footballfilter.com/tottenham-hotspur

Giuseppe Rossi – legit twitter playing at Villa Real: http://twitter.com/GiuRo22

Freddy Adu – the highly rated American star, defo a legit account I reckon: http://twitter.com/FreddyAdu11

Stan Collymore – ex footballer, possible dogger, Talk Sport DJ : http://twitter.com/StanCollymore

Rio Ferdinand – not sure its real, could be: http://twitter.com/RedRio

Wayne Rooney – also not sure if it’s real: http://twitter.com/RealWayneRooney

Daniel Gabbidon: seems legit to me, been talking about his injury of late: http://twitter.com/TheRealGabbidon

Darren Bent – we all know about his account. Still very vocal, still dissing the haters. Big up my man DB: http://twitter.com/DBTheTruth . In fact he has just challenged boxer Tony Jeffries to a “war”, or rather a race to get 10,000 followers. Here’s Tony Jeffries account http://twitter.com/Tony_Jeffries .

So that’s our list so far, will add more when I see them. Feel free to email us at contact@footballfilter.com with further suggestions!

Contributions from the comments and our twitter followers and new ones I have found:

Ryan Giggs – looks legit and he’s quite a regular tweeter too. http://twitter.com/Ryan_Giggs . Thanks to vishnurchari for that contribution.

David Beckham – hasn’t posted anything since May, even when Shaq was challenging him to whatever it is Shaq does . http://twitter.com/beckham

Jermaine Defoe – scoring well this season and bigging it up on Twitter, could be real: http://twitter.com/JCDefoe

Carlos Tevez – really not sure if this is him, but his midly stunted English phrasing and the Spanish posts suggest it could well be: http://twitter.com/carlitotevez

A selection found by FootballsUp (thanks) that I missed (follow FootballsUp on twitter http://twitter.com/footballsup):

Brad Guzman: American and Villas number two goalie: http://twitter.com/bguzan

Peter Crouch: hasn’t used it since April: http://twitter.com/OfficialCrouch/

Shay Given – looks like his tweets are taken from his site, but very regular at least: http://twitter.com/Shay_Given

Rohan Ricketts – never heard of him before but he plays for Toronto and he is English: http://twitter.com/rohanricketts

Jozy Altidore – Hull and US player, regular on Twitter: http://twitter.com/JozyAltidore17

More courtesy of Patrycja:

Maurice Edu – Rangers and US player – http://twitter.com/mauriceedu

Carl Robinson – another Toroto FC player – http://twitter.com/CarlRobinson33

Jim Brennan – captain of Toronto FC – http://twitter.com/jimmyBrennan

Dwayne DeRosario – another Toronto FC player! http://twitter.com/DwayneDeRosario

Jonathan DeGuzman – another Torotnto FC player – one of the De Guzman brothers: https://twitter.com/jdeguz

Julian De Guzman – Toronto player: http://twitter.com/JBDEGUZZI

I also spotted Ryan Babel on Twitter this very afternoon – looking G and Kayne esque on the background wallpaper: http://twitter.com/ryanbabel19

Vurnon Anita – Dutch midfielder, plays for Ajax: http://twitter.com/Vurnon

More to come….

THE GUARDIAN reports that a five match ban could be on the way after being hit with a double FA charge for stamping on Van Persie and his now already infamous 90 yard dash.

Everyone has been having their say on the incident including, rather randomly, Ricky Hatton, who gave his opinion on the INDEPENDENT

The usual top ten list was dug out in THE MIRROR listing the top ten moments when Arsene Wenger mysteriously “didn’t see” a controversial incident involving his player.

Speaking of controversial incidents (see what I did there??) the Eduardo, er, incident has again put diving in the spotlight. But what is a dive? Well THE OFFSIDE has produced a handy guide, complete with videos and everything.

In these days of badge kissing and 90 yard celebrations are fans seem to be foaming at the mouth at such inflammatory acts. But are football fans going soft? This blog over at WHEN SATURDAY COMES tries to give us the answer.

And finally…

While England fans were celebrating qualification for next year’s World Cup in South Africa spare a thought for Diego Maradona. Perhaps the ultimate example of “great players don’t make great managers” the Argies are on the brink of doing a ‘McClaren’ and failing to qualify for next year’s showcase tournament. Contrast that with fellow South American Dunga who has seemingly made the transition from player to manager with ease. So why is that? Well TIM VICKERY’S BLOG explains all.

Amongst others THE GUARDIAN , THE BBC and THE SUN all had live minute-by-minute updates, bringing all the stories as they broke.

Can’t remember who went where? THE INDEPENDENT has a handy club-by-club guide.

Elsewhere and the Eduardo ‘diving’ row rumbled on. Ironically Aiden McGeady of chief whingers Celtic was shown second yellow card for diving at the weekend. ANOTHER ARSENAL BLOG compares the two and asks whether Eduardo is being unfairly targeted by UEFA.

Meanwhile FOURFOURTWO wonders whether video technology should be introduced to help referees.

Ouch! This one isn’t for the faint hearted as Axel Witsel inflicts an Eduardo-esque injury on the unlucky Marcin Wasilewski, OFF THE POST has it for your viewing er, pleasure.

More you Tube magic over at WHO ATE ALL THE PIES as we are treated to an alternative look at a Premier League game.

And finally…

As part of the revamp of Football Filter we now have access to feeds from Football Manager websites. Fans of the best football management game on the planet can now access stories through Football Filter from the likes of TRUE FOOTBALL MANAGER, THE WAY I PLAY and FOOTBALL MANAGER PORTAL.

Its back!!

After a long summer the footy is finally back and the has been plenty of previews passing through the Football Filter.

THE TELEGRAPH previews the opening Premier League weekend while JUST FOOTBALL gives us a team-by-team season preview, very handy.

However THE GUARDIAN puts a dampener on the new season excitement by suggesting the new year has a feeling of normality about it already. Spoil sports.

The first managerial casualty has already emerged. Norwich boss Bryan Gunn has been given the boot after just ONE league game! Ok it was a 7-1 defeat at home to Colchester but why give Gunn a whole pre-season and allow him to bring his players in if you won’t even given him a few games to get going?? Anyway an article at WHEN SATURDAY COMES, written the day before Gunn got the boot, picks through the wreckage that was the Canaries disastrous start to the season. As D-ream said: Things can only get better….

Don’t forget the ladies! We may have half an eye on the World Cup next summer but the women’s European Championship takes place in Finland this month and UEFA.COM takes a look at England’s odds.

This one is maybe for the Norwich fans – if you think your team is bad read the article at FOOTBALLSUP where two London based football fans travel halfway around the world to see the world’s worst football team.

Got your fantasy football team yet? Promised yourself you won’t forget about it this time? Well WHO ATE ALL THE PIES offer some tips for picking that troublesome midfield.

And finally..

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes at Match Of The Day? Well Gary Lineker in THE SUN reveals some of the secrets behind the world’s greatest TV programme.

Finally it is here. We have released the new version of footballfilter.com. With new team pages and league pages, new functions and features. Take a look at the main site to check it out yourself. We hope you like it and if you have any suggestions or comments we want to hear them. You may also notice that not all team pages are done, but the ones that are not you can simply sign up and let us know you want it done…. and as long people dont go nuts I should imagine we can make them pretty quickly! Anyway have a read of the following if you want to know about the new features, I reckon having a wander about yourself is always better but in case you are interested……

At the moment we have for leagues – Premiership, Championship, League One, SPL, MLS, Bundesliga (in German), Swiss Super League (in German) and Serie A (in Italian and English).

As for teams – we have the entire premiership and are working on the championship – Nottingham Forest, Derby are done so far, as are Newcastle, Middlesbrough and West Brom as they got relegated while we were working on the database !

Filter the sources

Using the tabs provided you can jump directly to your interested category. Take the homepage for example, at the top you can see we have arranged the categories into tabs, if you click on that tab you will be taken to that row. The tabs are a way of filtering down the news even further, helping you to focus on a certain interest you might have…

We also provide a time filter, so if you start using the site a lot, which we hope you do, you can filter for the latest stories in the last 1, 2, 3 up to 24 hours.

Have a wander about

Or if you want you can simply scroll down the page and wander about.

Once you’ve seen a story you like the look of, scroll your mouse over it. A small drop down box will then appear, showing you further info on the story – and depending on the source, you might see the story’s picture too.

Media – Podcasts

As mentioned before, not only do we feed news sources but also videos, pictures and podcasts. Take the podcasts section for example, we have compiled a collection of the best football related podcasts which can be played via the page or, if you want, can be opened in an player in a new window:

If you opt to open the podcast in a new window you will be taken to our FootballFilter channel – a page we are currently working on and improving. But the idea of the channel page is to give you a nice interface and way of wandering through the different podcats, photos and also, in the future, videos….this page is in development so watch this space:

Media – Pictures and Videos

Similarly with pictures and videos. We feed the best pictures from Flickr and the best videos from Youtube, which you can browse and open via footballfilter. If you like what you see we also link directly to the user/member who uploaded them in the first place. The idea behind footballfilter is to promote the best football related sources out there. There are thousands of people taking photos and making videos, we want to help them get more exposure and also promote the best content on the internet.

Approved – Give us your opinion on the sources

Of course as “source editors” this is all personal opinion and maybe some people won’t agree with us. If that’s the case we have various ways for you to get your opinion across. You can use the “Approved” button beside each source to show if you like the source – (you will need to sign up to approve sources). Not only that but you can also comment on the source, check out the feed so you can add it to your own RSS reader, or just go to the website too:

Our Approved section then gives you an overview of all the top approved sources that all our signed up footballfilter users are liking. Here you can also export our feeds to use for your own reader. But remember each team page and league page has their own approved section – so for example if you check out the approved section for the homepage you can export all the feeds for that page:

As mentioned it is also possible to sign up to footballfilter in order to approve sources. But it also allows you to save stories to read later. The sign up process is very easy and is also a relatively new type of process. We basically allow you to sign up using an existing account you – don’t worry we do not take your password details, just the login name you use. At the moment you can sign up to footballfilter using one of these already existing accounts:

Once you have selected an account (hopefully you use one of these accounts) you will be taken there where you just simply sign in and you are then automatically taken back to footballfilter. From there you just need to do one more thing – sign up to Instapaper to allow you to save and read things later.

Instapaper – save and read articles later

You can also save articles that you like to read later by setting up an Instapaper account. To set up the account is quite easy – you can either do it in your profile section once you have signed up or you can also go to www.instapaper.com and set the account up there. Once its been set up you simply click on the “Read Later” which is beside every link and it will be saved to your instapaper account. You can then download your saved links to your iphone to read later, if you are fancy and have one that is.

Popular

For each team page, the home page and all the different league pages footballfilter also monitors what are the most popular links being clicked – by day, yesterday and by week. It’s a great way to catch up on what everyone else is reading, and also a nice little guide on what you should read. Click on the “Popular” tab and you will shown the top clicked links, scroll over one of the links and you will see how many times it has been clicked:

Live

Everyone is going Twitter crazy at the moment, and to be fair why not? Its a great source of info and can really help you keep up to date. If you go to our “Live” tab we set up a Twitter search page where you can search what’s being said about key words in the world of football. Depending on the trend and what’s going on, there are default key words already entered by us at FootballFilter which we change as time goes by, but if you want to search for something else simply type in another word into one of the four search fields and watch what the Twitter world has got to say about it:

The iPhone Version and Mobile Version

We also provide footballfilter in a format suitable for the iphone, mobile and Blackberry. If you have a mobile or Blackberry simply type www.footballfilter.com/m into your phone and read away. The iphone should work by entering the standard URL. And the look a little like this:

Simply select the category you want and you will then get the various different articles listed by the provider. Take the Broadsheets section, you will see the five latest article from the Guardian, Independent, Times and Telegraph. Like so:

Follow us and Contact Us!

At the bottom of every page you will see links to our profiles on sites such as Twitter, Flickr and Facebook. And if you want to get in touch about submitting a source click on “Submit a Source” or if you want to berate us or (more preferably) shower us with praise click on “Support/Feedback”. You can also email us at contact@footballfilter.com. We are just two guys so please be patient if you don’t hear from us. If you like footballfilter so much that you want to do it for another hobby/genre/interest – get in touch! We would be happy to help.

The Manchester City spending spree continues with Kolo Toure the latest new boy. They have now set their sights on Everton’s Joleon Lescott. But the Toffees are refusing to be bullied into selling their star defender. THE GUARDIAN reports that they have rejected City’s second bid of £18million out of hand. But with City having endless amounts of cash at their disposal, how long will Everton resist? Football betting on that one is likely to be split.

And what now for Arsenal?

They may have £39 million in the bank but Wenger has told THE TELEGRAPH that big money signings are imminent – despite rumours of a dramatic return for a FORMER CAPTAIN.

AFC Wimbledon’s rapid rise up the football pyramid is the most common example of a side being re-born by the fans from the ground up. But this article in WHEN SATURDAY COMES shows that success isn’t always guaranteed.

Wondering what that annoying buzzing sound was during the Confederations Cup? Swarm of giant wasps perhaps? No, they were the vuvuzela horns, the instrument of choice for the South African fans. If you find them annoying count your lucky stars you weren’t at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth this week where a world record vuvuzela was made, as reported in the WORLD CUP BLOG.

What a twit! Darren Bent, whose protracted move to Sunderland continues to stall, vented his frustration at Spurs chairman Daniel Levy via his twitter page, as reported in THE MAIL.

And finally…

Any football fan will be saddened at the news of the death of Bobby Robson. A great player, a great manager but more importantly, a true gentleman. Football is much the poorer for his absence.
