Abstract:

For centuries, people continuously increased the rate of biological invasions and there is no sign of slowing down. From the depth of the Ocean to the crest of Himalayas, they are occupying pristine and semi-natural ecosystems at an alarming rate, threatening human, animal, plant as well as ecosystem health. Efforts to avoid or eradicate them are not achievable except for very few cases. Currently, therefore, their management aims at controlling invaders and mitigating their impact rather than eradication.

BISEP-ST's goat-farming program - a blessing for livelihood!

In 2006, Biodiversity Sector Programme for Siwaliks and Terai (BISEP-ST) selected 15 households from marginalised and the poorest-of-the-poor in Shree Pragati Community Forestry User Group, Shaktikhor VDC, Chitwan. BISEP-ST provided training on goat farming and a support of Rs 60,000 in 2006 and Rs 6,000 in 2007 to purchase goats of breeds Lamkanna and Jamunapari, which have a high reproduction rate.

Tree diversity and regeneration of community-managed Bhabar lowland and Hill Sal forests in central region of Nepal

Abstract:

Diversity and regeneration of tree species were studied in two community-managed Sal forests, Bhabar lowland (LEF) and Hill (HEF), in the central region of Nepal. Tree species >30 cm in height were enumerated in 16 systematically laid quadrats. Density, dominance and frequency as well as the Importance Value Index (IVI) of species were computed to characterize the floristic composition. Stand density, basal area, and diversity measures were calculated to examine stand structure and heterogeneity in each forest community.

Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) recently conducted census of some major wildlife species of Nepal - Arna(Bubalus arnee) in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR), Gaur (Bos gaurus) in Parsa Wildlife Reserve (PWR), and Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) in major rivers.

Synopsis:

In 2002, Nepal developed a comprehensive Nepal Biodiversity Strategy (NBS) with the participation of a broad cross-section of Nepali society as well as in consultation with international experts to fulfil its obligations of being a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Nepal signed the CBD on June 12, 1992, which was ratified by the Nepali parliament on November 23, 1993, and has been enforced in Nepal since February 21, 1994.
