This year, from time to time I will be sharing a business spotlight on the blog, featuring a local business that I love. I am really excited about this spotlight because it is for Essential Birth Consulting, run by the wonderful midwife, Melissa!

Can you tell us a bit more about Essential Birth Consulting and what services you offer?
Essential Birth Consulting is a private midwifery practice that offers several options for care. Women can see me for complete continuity of care, including pregnancy, birth in hospital or at home, and postnatal care for 6 weeks; or women can see me for pregnancy and postnatal care only. Women who see me for pregnancy and postnatal care can receive this care with no cost if they have a Medicare card as my service attracts Medicare benefits. For women who birth their babies with me, there is an out-of-pocket cost, but they are assured continuity of care from very early in pregnancy right the way through to when their new bub is 6 weeks old. In the hospital, I provide a waterbirth service, VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) and we support vaginal breech and twin births. I also attend home births and this is a popular option.

What is your favourite thing about your job?
My favourite thing is walking the journey with a woman from early pregnancy, through to birth and welcoming the new baby into the family – seeing how she is transformed through the process, how she grows as a woman and as a mother, and being able to make a difference to that family’s life. I love working with women who would be considered “high risk” and helping to keep their pregnancy and birth normal. I love the relationships that develop over time, with many women remaining in contact for years to come.

How did you get started?
I completed a midwifery degree and worked in the hospital system for a few years, working in all areas of midwifery. In 2006, I started my private practice and haven’t looked back! Private practice enables me to provide one-on-one, tailored care to women in a way that I feel more thoroughly meets their needs.

How big is your company in terms of employees?
I am the Director of my practice and have no employees at this stage. There are fewer than 25 midwives in NSW who are able to provide private midwifery care with Medicare funding, and as this number increases, I will look to expand my practice.

The best way to find me is through my website: www.essentialbirthconsulting.com.au. There is an online enquiry form there which I can respond to. I consult from rooms in Bexley and Westmead Private Hospital.

Are there any special programs or classes you have that you think the Forever Bliss Photography blog readers might like to know about?
Yes, I offer women pregnancy and postnatal (after baby) care at no cost, provided that the woman has a Medicare card. She may be having her baby at any public hospital, and provided that she can make it to Bexley or Westmead for visits, the care is provided at no cost. This means having your own midwife for continuity of care for pregnancy and/or postnatal care. The feedback from this service has been fantastic so far, so it has recently been expanded to cover all hospitals.

What is your favourite thing about living in The Shire?
I love that it is not too far from anywhere and that it contains all the services that are needed, without all the hassle of traffic!

What’s your favourite ‘indulgence’ that is just for you?
Definitely Raffaello chocolates. They’re my number one weakness!

What is your favourite thing about your job?
Meeting so many new and expectant parents and seeing them at the beginning of their journey, so excited and apprehensive and impatient to meet their babies!

How did you get started?
I established Rock-A-Bye Baby Equipment Hire quite a few years ago now to fill a gap in the market for parents who want to hire beautiful, contemporary nursery equipment for their babies.

How big is your company in terms of employees?
There’s 3 of us internally and a team of external helpers that we couldn’t do without.

Yes, home delivery is free within the Sutherland Shire and all our car capsules and car seats come with free fitting by a trained restraint professional.

What is your favourite thing about living in The Shire?
Easy access to some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches.

What’s your favourite ‘indulgence’ that is just for you?
Swimming in the ocean very early in the morning.
