There is a warmth and domesticity to Formica that I think of in relation to linoleum. It is man-made but seems to have attained an almost natural quality in our lives. </EM></P> <P><EM></EM><BR><B>What was your design rationale for the Anniversary Collection?</B></P> <P><EM>The patterns and colors developed for Formica Group's 100th Anniversary were conceived within the lineage of the brand and its history. </EM></P> <P><EM>Ellipse™ uses the oval that is visible in the famous Formica "F" logo and creates a series of layered strands that ripple across the surface. </EM></P> <P><EM></EM></P> <P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><EM><EM>Ellipse™</EM></EM></P> <P><EM>Endless™ creates a digital grain from bars that alternately layer and punch through the colored base. Both of these patterns innovate with printing technology in that they allow independent layers of the pattern to randomly interact in the course of printing. The pattern appears consistent because of the fluidity of the overlapping elements. </EM></P> <P><EM></EM><EM></EM></P> <P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><EM><EM>Endless™</EM></EM><BR><BR><EM></EM></P> <P style="TEXT-ALIGN: left"><EM>The other two patterns—Dotscreen™ and Halftone™—refer to Formica's basis in printing technology and its history of exuberant color. Photomechanical reproduction creates tonal effects, light and shadow through screens comprised of small dots. The bright and saturated colors of Halftone™ and Dotscreen™ are made more complex by the undercurrent of pattern.</EM></P> <P><EM>In the case of Halftone™, shifting scales of dots in variously scaled boxes create an active second-reading. </EM></P> <P><EM></EM></P> <P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><EM>Halftone™ </EM></P> <P><EM>Dotscreen™ pushes the printing technology by using extremely fine patterns to create a pattern that refers to Islamic design. One is more serious and formal, using grey, red and blue (in relation to Ellipse</EM><EM>™</EM><EM> and Endless</EM><EM>™</EM><EM>). Dotscreen</EM><EM>™</EM><EM> and Halftone</EM><EM>™</EM><EM> are much brighter and exuberant. I think of Dotscreen</EM><EM>™</EM><EM> as coming from a more complex color heritage, natural and almost tropical, whereas Halftone</EM><EM>™</EM><EM>feels more like bright colors that have a bit of milk-white in them – they aren't "hard" or primary, but feel like they've been knocked back into something softer. </EM></P> <P><B>What impression do you hope the Anniversary Collection will make on the design community? </B></P> <P><EM>I hope they remind people that the heart and soul of Formica® laminate is a printed sheet and, therefore, pattern and color are intrinsic to the culture of the company. We wanted to create patterns and colors that would acknowledge Formica Group's past, especially with designers like <A title="Brooks Stevens and Raymond Loewy" href="http://info.formica.com/blog/bid/120283/Who-Created-Iconic-Boomerang" target=_blank>Brooks Stevens and Raymond Loewy</A>, but without feeling retro or nostalgic. A few key takeaways pertaining to kitchens and baths …</P> <P><STRONG>Consumer confidence is on the rise</STRONG> – 53 percent of respondents agreed that now is a good time to renovate a home. </P> <P></P> <P>The motivation behind such renovations? <STRONG>More homeowners cite improving the look, feel, flow or layout for themselves versus increasing home value for future sale</STRONG>.</P> <P> </P> <P>When it comes to renovation, <STRONG>kitchens and baths are top priorities in the next two years</STRONG>, with 28 percent of respondents planning a bathroom remodel or addition and 23 percent planning a<B> </B>kitchen remodel or addition.</P> <P> </P> <P>Kitchens topped the list in budget allocations – <STRONG>nearly four in 10 home improvement dollars were spent on kitchens in the past five years</STRONG>.</P> <P> </P> <P>Bathrooms received the second largest budget allocation.</P> <P></P> <P>Interestingly, <STRONG>time spent in a room did not correlate with budget allocations </STRONG>– as in the case with bathrooms.</P> <P></P> <P><STRONG>The good news for home professionals? We’ve all heard about the kitchen work triangle, though Dirks and Tringali said the latest trend is the <b>“living triangle,”</b> which fully integrates the kitchen into the living space. In addition to the kitchen, the living triangle includes breakfast and dining areas, hearth, family area, technology center, pantry and laundry. Foyers, hallways, walls and task-oriented rooms are replaced by zones and hubs centered around how people live.</p> <p>So how might this look? Dirks and Tringali provide some ideas:</p> <ul> <li> <p>The kitchen has less square footage but more usable space, including flex space.</p> </li> <li> <p>The kitchen island is a central hub and is integrated with the dining areas. It serves as a homework or an office area; a library or a storage area.
