If you've ever had the good fortune of stepping into a VIP area or team enclave at an F1 event, you might well have seen an F1 Blackbook on the coffee table. Sent out to sponsors, teams, and key partners in motorsport, the Blackbook is a business companion to F1, Indycar, NASCAR, WEC, WRC, and more. Inside you'll find a trove of information about the sport - the venues, teams, and suppliers. For 2015, Formula Photographic is included in the mix, with a one-page interview strategically tucked next to the Canadian Grand Prix event preview. Interview after the jump...

I always say that filming rally is all about putting yourself in the right place at the right time...this was a perfect example...

As we ring in a new year, and say goodbye to 2014, one of my favourite personal moments in a season full of memorable moments is highlighted on WRC today! I always say that filming rally is all about putting yourself in the right place at the right time...this was a perfect example...

On our final day of filming for WRC TV at Rally Mexico, we had just exited the penultimate stage on our way back to film the podium, and turned onto "rally route". Suddenly, Latvala is in my mirrors so I pull over to let him pass. As I'm about to pull away, I glanced in the rearview and notice a Hyundai pulling over. "Hmm...lets hang on here a sec."

Sure enough, the hood goes up and I run back to see if everything is okay. Neuville is clearly flustered and in a bit of a panic. I run back to get the camera and start filming. There was some big tension here as Theirry was on speakerphone with the engineers trying to diagnose things. Got a great shot of him kicking and tearing the front bumper away. They used putty sealant to plug the hole in the rad, poured some radiator goo in the tank...then topped it off with Corona!

We chased after them (requiring a speed *cough* slightly over the speed limit!) and they stopped about 10km further on to top it up again (finishing off both Corona bottles...lucky they had saved the bottles instead of spraying them at the power stage!). We lost them at that point but they turned up at the main time control to secure third place!

And that, my friends, is why I love filming rally. Here's the video:

Formula Photographic is very excited to be the official TV and Media Production Partner for the Canadian Rally Championship, starting in 2014 for three years. Here's the full announcement...

The Canadian Association of RallySport is pleased to announce we have confirmed a three-year agreement with Formula Photographic Inc. to serve as the Canadian Rally Championship media production partner. The agreement brings together an expert team including Bowes Media Inc. and Dean Campbell Editorial to the championship, delivering proven experience in television, media, and digital content.

The new partnership promises to enhance the exposure of the Canadian Rally Championship (CRC) both within Canada and abroad. Through an expanded digital media effort, and alliances with established video distribution partners, the program will bring Canadian rally to a larger and more diverse audience.

For 2014, and beyond, the Canadian Rally Championship will feature:

Social Media: An expanded social media program, with activity year-round and integration with videos, event activities and teams.

Web Series: A twelve-episode online video series starting mid summer on a bi-weekly basis. This narrative-driven series will highlight the personalities and stories of perseverance and adventure that make rally so unique.

Online Videos: Short rally videos will be released on alternating weeks to compliment the web series, keeping fans engaged on a regular basis.

Broadcast Series: CARS will continue its long history of showing the CRC on traditional broadcast networks in English and French.

Enhanced Exposure: The Formula Photographic team will be continuing the path set in 2013 by turning their lenses towards a broad range of competitors and event participants. The goal will be to share the true nature of the sport in the promotional work being produced.

“I’m looking forward to working with Formula Photographic Inc. in the coming years,” says CARS Marketing Manager Keith Morison. “Everyone on the team has been a staple of promoting the sport over the last decade and their commitment to the sport will make for great coverage.”

“Our whole team has been eagerly anticipating this opportunity,” says Executive Producer, Warwick Patterson. “We look forward to putting our collective experience in action to bring the CRC to a new level. A three-year agreement gives us the momentum to build a very strong program for the Canadian rally community.”

“These are exciting times,” says CARS President John Hall. ”The board had a tough decision to make as they reviewed the proposals but the vision and talent of the Formula Photographic team was clearly in line with the PR goals of CARS and our partners. I appreciate the interest shown by the other vendors and in particular I would like to express my appreciation for the excellent job done by Muskateer Media in covering the 2013 season

The Formula Photographic Inc. coverage of the Canadian Rally Championship starts with the Rallye Perce Neige Maniwaki on February 8, 2014.

Its the question asked by every aspiring photographer/videographer/creative person: how should they should get started in the business, and what is the key to success? There's no clear answer, but I was fortunate to be invited on-set to a taping of Chase Jarvis LIVE this week, and the discussions with Chryde from La Blogotheque, and hiphop sensation Macklemore reinforced several principles and philosophies I take to heart. These have proven successful for me over the years, so I thought I'd share a few of the ideas. These can apply to every part of your life too, not just your creativity and business.

1. Call yourself a photographer
When I was first starting out my career in photography, I asked snowboard photographer, Dano Pendygrasse for some advice. He wrote me back a great email full of wisdom. I've forgotten (or absorbed) most of what it said, but I'm pretty sure one of the morsels of advice was "call yourself a photographer". Even if you're an aspiring photographer working at 7-11 to make ends meet, when you introduce yourself to someone and they ask what you do, tell them you're a photographer. Whatever it is you want to be, own it!

2. Take advantages of opportunities
This is one of the discussion points from the cjLIVE show yesterday, and it has been a huge key in my life and in the development of Formula Photographic. When a unique opportunity presents itself, grab hold and go along for the ride! The best stories, adventures, and inspiration come from putting yourself in places you wouldn't normally go. Huge personal and business growth can come from taking an opportunity that others have passed over, or considered unobtainable. Sometimes an opportunity will arise that conflicts with current plans, but if your gut is telling you "this opportunity would be amazing", and you have that buzzing feeling about it, GO. And, when you accept those amazing opportunities, take full advantage and produce amazing work.

3. Make your own opportunities
This goes along with point #2. You never know unless you ASK. Want to photograph that band you really love and they're coming to town next week? What's stopping you from emailing or picking up the phone and contacting their management? If you're just starting out the answer is often a "no", but occasionally you'll get a "yes" and suddenly you have an amazing opportunity in front of you. On a similar note, putting yourself in the right place at the right time can also result in many unexpected chances. Captured a great photo of a team's racecar on the track? Head over to the pits and show the team your image. They might just be looking for a great image to use in new posters, and you just made the job easy for them. Make things happen for yourself.

4. Keep going until someone says "No".
This one needs a bit of moral judgement on your part in each different situation, but sometimes if you want something (a better photo location, an interview with someone, etc.) you should just act like you're supposed to be there, and keep walking. As long as you aren't hurting anyone or anything, or making life difficult for others, why not try? Walk backstage like you have an interview arranged, or saunter onto pit lane with all your gear on your shoulder and a look of purpose on your face. Be respectful and professional at all times, and be nice to the powers that be. The worst they will do is stop you, and then you're only back to square one.

5. Live Life.
In his discussion with Chase, Macklemore talked about being a complete person and living life. You can't create great work by sitting on the couch, feeding your body garbage - both physically and mentally. Great things happen when you get out and actively create something. Interacting with other creative people kick-starts your motivation and inspires you, broadens your perspective, and gives you the mental nourishment you need to create something new and different. So, get out from behind the computer and go to that gallery opening or movie premiere, or just go for a walk with your camera and make images!

If nothing else, trying some of the above ideas might give you a few more fun stories to tell the grandkids! What makes you successful as a creative person and/or business owner? Who do you look up to as a role model? I'd love to hear your stories in the comments below. You can watch the full Chase Jarvis LIVE segment for a limited time below:

September is always a busy month at Formula Photo, with Targa Newfoundland being the annual highlight. This year (2011), we had the pleasure to produce daily videos for the Chrysler Group and their DriveSRT team.

Specifically, our main focus was on the Dodge Viper car crewed by SRT CEO, Ralph Gilles, and co-driver, Jen Horsey. Targa Newfoundland is a challenging event to shoot, and even more so to deliver dailies. Covering an event that spans over 2500km of roads in five days requires a good movement plan, plus elements like internet access are marginal in many parts of Newfoundland. We spent several nights in hotel lobbies waiting for videos to upload! Never the less, Targa is a one-of-a-kind event and we wouldn't want to miss it! This was Year 5 for us, and we hope to be back again next year.

This was also our first production shot entirely on Canon DSLR's, and the look of the footage is fantastic. The DSLR's are not as easy to shoot with, but with a few add-ons (rails, audio breakout, etc.) and a good camera operator, they can be just as good in the field.

Part of the challenge and fun of filmmaking is fashioning makeshift solutions to difficult shoot conditions. When travel, logistics, and budgets don't allow you to bring extra gear - such as lights - a little bit of creativity and problem solving can save the day.

Sometimes budgets, logistics, and just plain life on the road will mean that you can't bring along lots of gear. Many of my on-location travel shoots are shot with whatever I can fit in my camera backpack (often a Dakine Reload) and Manfrotto tripod bag. For me, part of the challenge and fun of filmmaking is fashioning makeshift solutions to bring an idea to life. Lighting kits are often an item left behind, because, lets face it they are a pain in the butt to transport safely!

We recently sat the Subaru Rally Team drivers down for some interviews, and finding suitable light in a small-town hotel was a challenge to say the least. At first I considered the option of the dark, poorly lit lounge - there was a pretty sweet stuffed elk head hanging over the couch to provide some atmosphere after all! Then, I spotted a 10'x10' spot at the top of the stairs with a bright coloured wall and enough space to set up some chairs. The overhead fluorescent lighting still wasn't ideal, so I grabbed a lamp from the hotel room, popped the lamp shade off, and set the bare lightbulb on a table to the side. This created even more colour temperature chaos - a nasty mix of flouro and tungsten! But, disregarding colour, the actual light & shadows on the subjects didn't look too bad - and the bare lightbulb acted as a nice highlight in their eyes. So, what was the solution? Some creative license in post-production, of course.

The results are below from a fairly quick Final Cut Pro 3-way colour correction and 'gradient colorize' filter. It was the first time I'd used gradient colorize and I was pretty pleased with the tones and effect it produced. With color correction I was able to "blow out" the background a bit and make it look a bit more like a studio backdrop. Who says you need all the fancy tools...just use your creativity and problem solving skills!
