Xbox One And The Importance Of Names

I dislike the naming of Xbox One. First off, ‘One’ is over used (HTC One vs HTC One X vs, HTC One X+, etc.) and can cause quite a confusion when trying to differentiate your product from others over the years. Granted, ‘X’ is over used too in almost every industry in the world.

When trying to show superiority over a prior release, Xbox 720 would have made more sense because it shows evolution. In the case of Wii U, that was a horrible name because up until 2 months ago I thought it meant “Wii University” and that it was an education DLC, or something. Not confusing costumers is as important as creating the product - and it all starts with the name.

When I name my songs I try and use search results to gain traction. In addition, ‘ForOrchestra’ was an available domain name, and for many other reasons it’s been perfect “business name” for me and what I do.

The only rational reason I can think of why Microsoft chose not to name the Xbox One the Xbox 720 is because they didn’t want the layman thinking it only did 720p. It’s predicted that 4K resolution is right around the corner, and this Xbox had to be futureproofed.

In a world of 7 billion people it’s difficult to create a name that 1.) Is short and memorable 2.) unique 3.) can’t be misspelled 4.) has never been used

Names can make or break something. Like, the ASUS Eee PC 1001PXD-EU17-BK, rolls right off the tongue, no?

Everything from the title of a blog post, a tweet for linkbait, a song’s name, person’s name, or even a product’s name has an incredibly heavy outcome. Words matter.

As much as I enjoyed my Homestuck ‘Rex Duodecim Angelus’ For Orchestra, it’s not my favorite. There’s a lot I heard wrong with it - which is partly because my deafness that messed up my balance and panning when mixing it together.

At the time ‘Rex’ stood as my biggest piece, clocking over 7 minutes long with a full choir, full orchestra, piano score, and lots of added sections. However, big doesn’t mean “the best” to me.

I continually say that I grow each week, and as result my Gravity Falls piece, since it’s my most recent, is my favorite for a number of reasons - mainly for the production value in dynamics, velocities, and the balance.

All the criticism of my Homestuck arrangement (and trust me, I got a ton) has been internalized so I knew how to grow for Gravity Falls. As such, my Daft Punk ‘Get Lucky’ arrangement that I’m working on right now is another leap in my growth. Compare the week 1 with week 160 and you’ll be blown away (everything even right down to how I write my blog posts, make my cover art, each weekly songs, and so much more). I’m fighting hard to keep that trajectory and desire to keep pushing myself each week for you.

I feel that if you keep your head buried in the sand then you might as well just put it up your ass. The feedback I receive is my secret, I need to hear it.

I’ll always be a student. It’s the only way to be.

I’m for it. Tumblr only made $12 million last year, which seems that they can use a bigger advertising company to support them and exponentially grow their income streams.

As much as I hate ads, I understand Tumblr needs to make money so that Tumblr (and this amazing community it nurtures) can survive. I thought $5 promoted posts could have worked with some tweaks, which would have created a serious income stream. I also felt Tumblr needed an internal Bandcamp-like store, Etsy-like store, and more. They host they content - why not sell it too?

If Marissa Mayer leaves Tumblr untouched and allows David Karp to run it as promised, then I see it being a win-win for everyone.

I also think our Tumblr pages may see a lot of traffic in the year to come because Yahoo plans to incorporate it with their other sites. This is both good and bad, I’ve repeatedly said that I don’t care about web traffic, I care more about the tight community. So if Tumblr becomes mainstream then it risks losing its niche audience. Only time will tell.

Tumblr and their investors always had an eye on an exit strategy, so this was seemingly inevitable. All things considered, I think Yahoo was the best company that could have bought it. Twitter would have sunset it like they did with Posterous, Facebook would have destroyed it, Google would have acqu-hired the talent and sold the parts, and if Tumblr remained independent then they faced increased competition from Pinterest, Wordpress, Twitter, etc.

I think this is a direct offensive move for Yahoo to incorporate Flickr so they can go against Facebook and Instagram. Gaining a younger demographic while securing mobile users is exactly want Yahoo needed, and that’s what they got - for a fraction of the price, too (Tumblr is worth a lot more than $1B in my opinion). Yahoo’s stock isn’t dependable, so an all cash deal was a good trade-off for a lower price tag.
