RåFILM pres: PIXELARIUM – WORKSHOP: 8-BIT POLITICAL TEXT-MODE GRAPHICS

Are certain kind of aesthetics connected to certain kinds of political issues!? Does it always have to be like that? What if you altered the aestethics connected to the issue? Could you reach new audiences with altered visual styles?
Come and create your own political graphics in 8-bit aesthetics! Learn how to perform visuals using 8-bit pixel graphics and/or text characters (letters, numbers and other symbols). No previous experience is needed.

Bring your own media to convert, it can be stills, interviews, video material and more! Create a theme that connects visual form with your political issue of choice.

Raquel Meyers and RåFILM is holding this unique workshop in Malmö 28-30 of april!

This workshop will cover for example Ascii, Ansi, PETSCII and Teletext (“Text-TV”). The purpose of the workshop is to find new ways of expression in these unique media environments. Although often misunderstood as limiting and difficult, these tools are often quite helpful to develop new procedures, ideas and motivations. New ideas don’t require new technologies. Sometimes it’s even easier to be progressive with old tools.

RAQUEL MEYERS
The workshop will be held by Raquel Meyers who works with low-res graphics and photography for performance, web, video and installations. Since 2004 she has performed at VJ-festivals like Mapping and Cimatics, at 8bit events like Tokyo Blip Festival and the Playlist exhibition, aswell at Transmediale, LABoral and LEV Festival. She currently lives and works in Sweden.

– 28 – 29 April – a two day workshop at Kontrapunkt in Malmö. 1-8PM
– 30 April - screening on a local wall near you! We gather at Möllevångstorget at 8PM. (If it´s raining we´ll come up with a plan B.)

- No previous experience is necessary!
- Bring a computer. We have some extra computers that people can borrow if you ask us in advance. Most of the software works in Windows, but there will be options for Mac & Linux too.
- If you have material you want to use, bring that.

Hackathon 2012!

Nu är det dags för det så många har frågat efter!

För ganska exakt ett år sedan var vi mer än 100 pers som under den kallaste helgen i mannaminnen spenderade 48h i en hangar i Västra Hamnen för att starta Malmös finaste Maker-space. Nu ett år senare har Fabriken levererat otaliga timmar av hackande och skapande.

Nu är det dags igen.

23-25 Mars från kl 17.00 fredag till 17.00 söndag. På lördagskvällen blir det även musik o häng på STPLN.

Lördagsforsk aka Saturday Forsk on February 25

Another Lördagsforsk event will be held this Saturday, Feburary 25.

Theme: GSM and osmocom-bb

Place: Norra Grängesbergsgatan 26, at high noon – 12:00

Entrance fee: Free!

A presentation and workshop about the Open Source GSM baseband software osmocom-bb. With osmocom-bb you can do anything a regular GSM phone can do. The difference is that osmocom-bb is Open Source all the way into the airwaves. Using only a Motorola mobile phone, you can learn everything about GSM.

We have been silent for a while; the winter is quite cold here. But, hey, let’s brag instead! This week’s Tuesday meeting saw diverse activity:

Olleolleolle and Jimmy built two projects: a photo lightbox and a Hexayurt for Barbie.
stg and Terninator opened up some old remote controls, and begun playing music with the trackball in there
an osmocom link to be able to fill old phones with interesting firmware was built by phrst and it begun working at the “hello firmware world” level. jonas assisted with cross-compiling and general trouble-shooting.

When we were done with the photo box and the scale model, we had to store them somewhere. The photo box sits in the ceiling, on top of some well-insulated pipes. The model was dismantled, to be re-built and perhaps even painted, at a later date. Needing a Barbie to stand next to it.

In the near future, we will host a Saturday Forsk – yes, the plan is really to host one once a month. A Saturday Forsk is a prolonged slack event with a theme. The upcoming theme is “Luften är fri”. (Thanks for the name, we will only borrow it, Sparvnästet!)

Sci-rep for past Thursday

The past Thursday looked something like this, in Swedish, reported by Olle:

Dundrande syntar och fabriksoväsen samt en pajad lösenordsfil hindrade lite, men jag fick visat programmet Animata för salkinitzor och linde. S jobbar Max/MSP, och det lirar med Animata, som låter en göra sprattelgubbeanimation.

NoSubstitute förklarade CACert jättebra för alla, han var en duktig assurer.

Quinn byggde en fin pappershållare till sin käresta på lasern. Inspirerade mig till att skära ut en bokstav som kan backlightas.

Terninator routade kretskort.

stg Flashhackade med libraryt Starling.

jonasb androidpratade med RoboCortex.

virtuald kom med en kamrat som jag missade att prata med.

Det kom ännu en person till som stg introducerade stället för. Tack stg för allt sånt.

Annika kom vidare med tillverkningen av sin trehjuliga hoj.

Tantverket fick fart på sin mattvävstol. Den behöver förstärkas med ett stag på något sätt för ökad hastighet.

Sci-Rep about Saturday’s gathering

At the Saturday Forsk this past weekend, our little band of researchers gathered to watch video-taped conference presentations from the annual Berlin conference “Chaos Communications Congress”. Some of the presentations were well done. Some presentations sucked. Since we had pre-screened some of the content, we could steer clear of the more amateur presentation efforts. Most of the time, it’s the presentation, not the content, that sucks.

Some of the published conference code examples were run on personal computers, and it seemed to work.

To keep our cheer, we made fast-food in the microwave, fetched falafels from across the street, and people had brought snacks to share.

As the day went on, long-standing minutiae got fixed: wall-mounting components cases saved bench-space and allowed more people to work in the room.

We have rebooted into 2012, and this year you are most welcome to join us. Tuesdays at Norra Grängesbergsgatan 29, and Thursdays at the “Fabriken” basement at Stapelbäddsparken 3. Seriously, you should come. Bring something to work on, or something you want to learn.

Årets första lördagsforsk 7 januari

Nu på lördag 7/1 har vi årets första lördagsforsk!

Det kommer att knappas på datorer och byggas på projekt och det blir videor från 28c3 och snacks. Kanske kommer det att finnas glass.

Om det fanns ett tema skulle det vara knappar och spakar.

Vi börjar kl 11.30 med lite videor.

Platsen är Norra Grängesbergsgatan 26.

Science Report 2011-09-13 – Just another Tuesday

People showed up, took to their projects, and begun finding their stuff.

phrst decided to make some room in our room. Good plan, but very hard to get done. We moved a few things into cold storage – oh it is so good to have storage!).

omni took care to select and deselect some collected junk.

Artur used the crank-operated FM radio to play some Russian (?) talk radio. Sounds of crying children was the intro to a song. Baffling.

Annika was creating something bike-related. When she left, she carried a small bike-wheel in her bike basket.

We had a social call from one of the organizers of the culture house we reside in, and planned for future collaboration. Some concrete IT plans grew out of this – if you are interested in key fob systems, WordPress theming or otherwise solving greenfield problems there is room for more hands. There is also a need for improving the network at all the addresses.

(Greenfield? That is IT slang for projects where you make the technical decisions others have to live with, not the other way around. Brownfield development is a cute word for maintaining existing systems in a sustainable way.)

During the conversation, it was clear that much of this could be half-way solved by adding some explicit signs around our house. Signs and billboards to post “I need a new hacksaw” or “LDAP debugging needed” notes.

We got to know each other a little more. But the most concrete result was qzio‘s team lead on the “fix the website” project for the culture house organization.

Anders the Carpenter reorganized the furniture in the carpentry room. This was to make room for some new machinery and furniture due on Saturday.

Olle and Markus moved some furniture, and discovered that the textile workgroup seems to have rebooted. Their space is in the back of the place, where there used to be an office. If you want to join that effort, we can perhaps guide to an email address.

When almost everyone had left, Anders found some speakers, set them up and found one of them broken. Immediately, he lugged it over to a workbench, unscrewed the top, and found the broken cable at the back. “You guys have solder,” he said. Together we fixed the connections and put the speaker up.

Also moved: The huge mat that you can dance on. We moved it to the dance room. The huge drum in the carpentry room was moved to storage. To rein in the flood of paint cans, a bookshelf was put up. Besides holding cans of paint, it makes for a nice interior wall, hiding the chaos of the paint can collection.

Also, qzio is planning to make a WordPress theme, and he would enjoy any assistance. He will set up code collaboration on the Forskningsavdelningen GitHub.

lakevalley promised to run a “Get to know the oscilloscope” on next Tuesday.

Stuff that came up during conversation

The building phase will last throughout the winter.

We may get to install a metal floor in the metal workshop area, when the building phase gets that far.

There is an Internet radio station at the culture house’s other address.

The textile group seems rebooted.

Klubb Kristallen have begun using their space a lot more, and are constructing clothes hanging tooling out of pipes.

The Clothes Library is an active group at the house.
