NoSubstitute förklarade CACert jättebra för alla, han var en duktig assurer.

Some of the published conference code examples were run on personal computers, and it seemed to work.

To keep our cheer, we made fast-food in the microwave, fetched falafels from across the street, and people had brought snacks to share.

As the day went on, long-standing minutiae got fixed: wall-mounting components cases saved bench-space and allowed more people to work in the room.

phrst decided to make some room in our room. Good plan, but very hard to get done. We moved a few things into cold storage – oh it is so good to have storage!).

omni took care to select and deselect some collected junk.

Artur used the crank-operated FM radio to play some Russian (?) talk radio. Sounds of crying children was the intro to a song. Baffling.

Annika was creating something bike-related. When she left, she carried a small bike-wheel in her bike basket.

We had a social call from one of the organizers of the culture house we reside in, and planned for future collaboration. Some concrete IT plans grew out of this – if you are interested in key fob systems, WordPress theming or otherwise solving greenfield problems there is room for more hands. There is also a need for improving the network at all the addresses.

(Greenfield? That is IT slang for projects where you make the technical decisions others have to live with, not the other way around. Brownfield development is a cute word for maintaining existing systems in a sustainable way.)

During the conversation, it was clear that much of this could be half-way solved by adding some explicit signs around our house. Signs and billboards to post “I need a new hacksaw” or “LDAP debugging needed” notes.

We got to know each other a little more. But the most concrete result was qzio‘s team lead on the “fix the website” project for the culture house organization.

Anders the Carpenter reorganized the furniture in the carpentry room. This was to make room for some new machinery and furniture due on Saturday.

Olle and Markus moved some furniture, and discovered that the textile workgroup seems to have rebooted. Their space is in the back of the place, where there used to be an office. If you want to join that effort, we can perhaps guide to an email address.

When almost everyone had left, Anders found some speakers, set them up and found one of them broken. Immediately, he lugged it over to a workbench, unscrewed the top, and found the broken cable at the back. “You guys have solder,” he said. Together we fixed the connections and put the speaker up.

Also moved: The huge mat that you can dance on. We moved it to the dance room. The huge drum in the carpentry room was moved to storage. To rein in the flood of paint cans, a bookshelf was put up. Besides holding cans of paint, it makes for a nice interior wall, hiding the chaos of the paint can collection.

Stuff that came up during conversation

The building phase will last throughout the winter.

We may get to install a metal floor in the metal workshop area, when the building phase gets that far.

There is an Internet radio station at the culture house’s other address.

The textile group seems rebooted.

Klubb Kristallen have begun using their space a lot more, and are constructing clothes hanging tooling out of pipes.

The Clothes Library is an active group at the house.

Olle came to show off the newly-arrived TI MSP430 Launchpad units. (Promptly, there were stared at, and junk was moved around instead. Order is so useful. We left the room in a better state than we found it in. But still, many things could be stored “for parts” or “for use someday.” I am now up to quite many projects that have been started and are still interesting – but not much time to do them.)

StG did some 3D modelling of the shell for a product. Looked really good, but he kept saying he did not have the eye for it. The rest of us chipped in with style advice, viewing it with fresh eyes. (“Looks good” isn’t much of advice, though.)

virtuald has begun designing a clock, a custom piece, running on batteries. He talked through some issues with parts sourcing and build structure.

phrst soldered a kit: a variable-voltage transformer, priced at a few hundred SEK at the local Electrokit. It ran! No LCD or anything, but with a multimeter you can check voltage. You can make do.

Annika was wood-working. Her tool cabinet has been finished and is highly practical.

Also, we improved the way-finding help on the website. The stills we shot became an animation that moves the viewer all the way from the hubbub of Norra Grängesbergsgatan into the courtyard of number 26, and further on, into the Forsk. We put the animation on the About page.

Personal note from Olle: On the way home, I was invited to a game of the fast-paced competitive card-game Race for the Galaxy. And I won, for the first time ever.

Olle continued work on the model of the Hexayurt, which has been sitting in a pile for while. Lakevalley helped cut paperboard.

phrst and omni showed the rest of us how to weld using the MIG welder. Sparks and safety! Three or four people let sparks fly.

omni took another stab at fixing the Forsk’s WRT router, which supplies Net to the house.

Davey and David were planning and discussing mad, large projects.

Annika kept working on metal projects.

We got leftover cake from Klädoteket (the Clothes Library). They are nice.

Today, a gray and rainy Sunday, there was an extra, freely added, completely optional small Forskningsavdelningen maker gathering at the Norra Grängesbergsgatan 26 premises.

(Q: How do we add gatherings? A: Oh, a process question. Let’s be transparent! It works like this: Key-holders say they are coming to the space, in this case Annika mentioned she was going to craft stuff today, in an email to the mailing list. This can galvanize others to join. Alternatively, a non-key-holder can request access to the place, on the mailing list. If any key-holder can be located, an extra gathering can be added.)

I (Olle) came there just after noon and found Annika carpenting a tool compartment inside a cabinet. The compartment had sliding shelves which ran on re-used rails, scrounged from a previous Annika project; a CD cabinet.

Later, phrst showed up, and metalcrafted on a hand-made copper needle valve. The valve was finished in one session and looked very steampunky.

Myself, I wanted to make a wooden scale model of a Hexayurt H13 microhouse. Here are my pieces, 7 out of the 13 I need. The readily available materials ran out. I plan to use something lighter than building-grade plywood for the roof.

My Hexayurt model needs: More thin plywood for the roof. For next time: bring glue, screws, make and use small wood angled blocks for “hinges”.

On the way back, we met omni (aka “pipe-pipe-underscore-underscore-slash-slash”), who was going to build smart storage rollers for the low-ceiling storage space underneath our raised section of the workshop.

What do you get out of it?
For a workshop you get a space in a corner somewhere with participants. You can have a short and focused workshop, or a longer drop-in time slot. We will be in a new location this year, Kontrapunkt, so there are lots of small rooms to use.

For a talk you get: a time-limited talk slot, and an MC introducing you, and a great eager audience. Perhaps even a projector.
