Thanks, Tara

iPhone: Web Applications for All

This week Apple said that it would let developers make applications for the upcoming iPhone. However, unlike Palm and Pocket PC applications, iPhone application actually run through iPhone's Safari browser. Apple insists on this to keep the iPhone secure and stable (as applications can cause stability issues and crashing--and no one likes their phone to crash).

Safari uses standard web programming (AJAX among others), so the applications for the iPhone can run in any browser that supports the standards. That means that we could have all sorts of really great educational programs that run on any platform--as long as there is a compatible browser.

Here's an example: OneTrip. It's a simple grocery checklist. It's written for Safari, so it may not render correctly in your browser. (Safari is now available for Windows users).

I'm assuming that applications can be written/saved in memory so that an internet connection is not always needed.

This is an exciting development as developers can make applications that can run on so many different devices. Maybe I should learn to program in AJAX...

Creating multiple podcasts

This is an idea I had for future implementation of podcasting projects. I want to create a system that allows students to record at home (if possible) but doesn't become a file management nightmare.

I used ODEO, ODEO Recorder web widget, RSS feeds from ODEO to my aggregater, and PBWIKI.

I set up 6 accounts in ODEO and linked each account to my RSS aggregater. Next I set up a PBWIKI site and embedded 6 ODEO recording widgets each linked to one of the ODEO accounts I created.

So now, either in class or at home, a student can record a podcast segment. The resulting mp3 file is sent to the appropriate ODEO Accounts and I'm notified in my aggregater when new audio is added. I'm trying to come up with systems like this because its somewhat difficult to manage everything that goes on in the whole class while addressing the tech side of groups and individuals recording

Anyways, here is the link to WIKI with the embeds. The embeds are flash and browser preferences may need to be altered to get them to work.

http://grouprecorders.pbwiki.com/

If possible, I'd like some feedback on the idea.

Hi Tony,

Last Fall (I think) you were working on another edition of "Handhelds for Teachers and Administrators", and I was wondering when that was due out.

Karen's Mashup - Mobile Technology Podcasts

Karen at K12 Handhelds has posted Show 15. Here's the description:

This show spotlights podcasts that relate to mobile technologies, including handhelds, cell phones, GPS receivers, MP3 players (including iPods), wireless, and more.

The podcasts in this show aren't really meant for student listening--they are for educators to learn more about mobile technology. Karen plays portions of these podcasts: Engadget, Podcasting Underground, PodCacher, The Cell Phone Junkie, and Soft Reset.

After many technical issues with the old forums hosted at learninginhand.com, the new ones are here, hosted at TonyVincent.net.

Unfortunately, there was not a way for me to import the old messages into the new system. The messages from the old forums are still available here.

You'll need to create a new login for TonyVincent.net to post, but it will be worth it. Your login will allow you to not only post, but to participate in polls, track site changes, and more. You may want to take the time as explore the other forums available on TonyVincent.net.
